Abstract

We report new GALLEX solar neutrino results from 15 runs covering 406 days (live time) within the exposure period 19 August 1992–13 October 1993 (“GALLEX II”). With counting data considered until 4 January 1994, the new result is [78±13 (stat.) ±5 (stat.)] SNU (1σ). It confirms our previous result for the 15 initial runs (“GALLEX I”) of [81±17( stat .)±9( syst .)] SNU. After two years of recording the solar neutrino flux with the GALLEX detector the combined result from 30 solar runs (GALLEX I + GALLEX II) is [79±10( stat .)±6( syst .)] SNU (1 σ ). In addition, 19 “blank” runs gave the expected null result. GALLEX neutrino experiments are continuing.

8. First Results of the Bioliq ® Fast Pyrolysis Pilot Plant

Abstract

Fast pyrolysis is the first step of the bioliq® concept, which is developed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology for synthetic fuels production from biomass. In the bioliq® fast pyrolysis plant shredded straw or other types of dry biomass are mixed with a hot heat carrier (sand) in a twin screw mixer reactor with two rotating screws. At a temperature of 500 °C and in the absence of oxygen the biomass particles are rapidly decomposed within seconds and char, pyrolysis gas and liquid condensates are produced. Results of the obtained products of the pyrolysis test campaign in November 2014 are presented. The products were analyzed in detail in regard to their use in the subsequently following gasification step. As product distribution, the liquid products were found to be 61 wt.%, the solids fraction to 21 wt.% and the un-condensable pyrolysis gas to 18 wt.%. The obtained products were analyzed by elemental analysis, Karl Fischer titration, 1HNRM, etc.). From that, a mass balance could be set up. During the last test campaign representative products were obtained. It was found that the water content in the aqueous phase is significantly high which causes a low higher heating value (~ 4 MJ/kg). The used method for the particle size measurement gives a good idea of the particle size distribution but has to be improved. Abstract

Background: Biofuels may play a significant role in regard to carbon emission reduction in the transportation sector. Therefore, a thermochemical process for biomass conversion into synthetic chemicals and fuels is being developed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) by producing process energy to achieve a desirable high carbon dioxide reduction potential. Methods: In the bioliq process, lignocellulosic biomass is first liquefied by fast pyrolysis in distributed regional plants to produce an energy-dense intermediate suitable for economic transport over long distances. Slurries of pyrolysis condensates and char, also referred to as biosyncrude, are transported to a large central gasification and synthesis plant. The bioslurry is preheated and pumped into a pressurized entrained flow gasifier, atomized with technical oxygen, and converted at > 1,200°C to an almost tar-free, low-methane syngas. Results: Syngas - a mixture of CO and H2 - is a well-known versatile intermediate for the selectively catalyzed production of various base chemicals or synthetic fuels. At KIT, a pilot plant has been constructed together with industrial partners to demonstrate the process chain in representative scale. The process data obtained will allow for process scale-up and reliable cost estimates. In addition, practical experience is gained. Conclusions: The paper describes the background, principal technical concepts, and actual development status of the bioliq process. It is considered to have the potential for worldwide application in large scale since any kind of dry biomass can be used as feedstock. Thus, a significant contribution to a sustainable future energy supply could be achieved.

Abstract

All materials present in the core of a nuclear reactor are activated by neutron irradiation. The activity so generated produces a dose around the material. This dose is a potential risk for workers in the surrounding area when materials are withdrawn from the reactor. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the activity generated and the dose produced. In previous works, neutron activation of control rods and doses around the storage pool where they are placed have been calculated for a Boiling Water Reactor using the MCNP5 code based on the Monte Carlo method. Most of the activation is produced indeed in stainless steel components of the nuclear reactor core not only control rods. In this work, a stainless steel sample is irradiated in the Training Reactor AKR-2 of the Technical University Dresden. Dose measurements around the sample have been performed for different times after the irradiation. Experimental dosimetric values are compared with results of Monte Carlo simulation of the irradiation. Comparison shows a good agreement. Hence, the activation Monte Carlo model can be considered as validated.

Abstract

Intrinsically disordered proteins dynamically sample a wide conformational space and therefore do not adopt a stable and defined three-dimensional conformation. The structural heterogeneity is related to their proper functioning in physiological processes. Knowledge of the conformational ensemble is crucial for a complete comprehension of this kind of proteins. We here present an approach that utilizes dynamic nuclear polarization-enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy of sparsely isotope-labeled proteins in frozen solution to take snapshots of the complete structural ensembles by exploiting the inhomogeneously broadened line-shapes. We investigated the intrinsically disordered protein α-synuclein (α-syn), which plays a key role in the etiology of Parkinson's disease, in three different physiologically relevant states. For the free monomer in frozen solution we could see that the so-called "random coil conformation" consists of α-helical and β-sheet-like conformations, and that secondary chemical shifts of neighboring amino acids tend to be correlated, indicative of frequent formation of secondary structure elements. Based on these results, we could estimate the number of disordered regions in fibrillar α-syn as well as in α-syn bound to membranes in different protein-to-lipid ratios. Our approach thus provides quantitative information on the propensity to sample transient secondary structures in different functional states. Abstract

Amyloid deposits formed from islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) are a hallmark of type 2 diabetes mellitus and are known to be cytotoxic to pancreatic β-cells. The molecular structure of the fibrillar form of IAPP is subject of intense research, and to date, different models exist. We present results of solid-state NMR experiments on fibrils of recombinantly expressed and uniformly 13C, 15N-labeled human IAPP in the non-amidated, free acid form. Complete sequential resonance assignments and resulting constraints on secondary structure are shown. A single set of chemical shifts is found for most residues, which is indicative of a high degree of homogeneity. The core region comprises three to four β-sheets. We find that the central 23-FGAILS-28 segment, which is of critical importance for amyloid formation, is part of the core region and forms a β-strand in our sample preparation. The eight N-terminal amino acid residues of IAPP, forming a ring-like structure due to a disulfide bridge between residues C2 and C7, appear to be well defined but with an increased degree of flexibility. Abstract

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe has developed a concept for the utilization of cereal straw and other thin-walled biomass with high ash content. The concept consists of a regional step (drying, chopping, flash-pyrolysis, and mixing) and a central one (pressurized entrained-flow gasification, gas cleaning, synthesis of fuel, and production of byproducts). The purpose of the regional plant is to prepare the biomass by minimizing its volume and producing a stable and safe storage and transport form. In the central gasifier, the pyrolysis products are converted into syngas. The syngas is tar-free and can be used for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis after gas cleaning.

43. Turbidity currents: monitoring their occurrence and movement with a three-dimensional sensor network.

Abstract

Detailed field data on the occurrence, flow pattern, and internal dynamics of both surge and continuous turbidity currents have been obtained with a three-dimensional array of optical and thermal sensors. The array, operated in a glacial lake in southeastern British Columbia, collected detailed information on the character of surge events with velocities reaching 110 centimeters per second and continuous underflows exceeding 90 centimeters per second. Thefindings (i) indicate that such currents are frequent events, occurring with density differences between the incoming stream water and the lake water as low as 0.19 kilogram per cubic meter of water; (ii) document the differences in the initiation and internal characteristics of the continuous and surge events; and (iii) support the concept of erosion by turbidity currents.
