Abstract

The first samples collected by the Mars 2020 mission represent units exposed on the Jezero Crater floor, from the potentially oldest Séítah formation outcrops to the potentially youngest rocks of the heavily cratered Máaz formation. Surface investigations reveal landscape-to-microscopic textural, mineralogical, and geochemical evidence for igneous lithologies, some possibly emplaced as lava flows. The samples contain major rock-forming minerals such as pyroxene, olivine, and feldspar, accessory minerals including oxides and phosphates, and evidence for various degrees of aqueous activity in the form of water-soluble salt, carbonate, sulfate, iron oxide, and iron silicate minerals. Following sample return, the compositions and ages of these variably altered igneous rocks are expected to reveal the geophysical and geochemical nature of the planet’s interior at the time of emplacement, characterize martian magmatism, and place timing constraints on geologic processes, both in Jezero Crater and more widely on Mars. Petrographic observations and geochemical analyses, coupled with geochronology of secondary minerals, can also reveal the timing of aqueous activity as well as constrain the chemical and physical conditions of the environments in which these minerals precipitated, and the nature and composition of organic compounds preserved in association with these phases. Returned samples from these units will help constrain the crater chronology of Mars and the global evolution of the planet’s interior, for understanding the processes that formed Jezero Crater floor units, and for constraining the style and duration of aqueous activity in Jezero Crater, past habitability, and cycling of organic elements in Jezero Crater.

Abstract

A potential record of Earth’s magnetic field going back 4.2 billion years (Ga) ago is carried by magnetite inclusions in zircon grains from the Jack Hills. This magnetite may be secondary in nature, however, meaning that the magnetic record is much younger than the zircon crystallization age. Here, we use atom probe tomography to show that Pb-bearing nanoclusters in magnetite-bearing Jack Hills zircons formed during two discrete events at 3.4 and <2 Ga. The older population of clusters contains no detectable Fe, whereas roughly half of the younger population of clusters is Fe bearing. This result shows that the Fe required to form secondary magnetite entered the zircon sometime after 3.4 Ga and that remobilization of Pb and Fe during an annealing event occurred more than 1 Ga after deposition of the Jack Hills sediment at 3 Ga. The ability to date Fe mobility linked to secondary magnetite formation provides new possibilities to improve our knowledge of the Archean geodynamo.

Abstract

In this paper we describe the derivation of these requirements, test and analyses methods, and more generally the processes and procedures that govern the magnetics program for Psyche. The paper concludes with a discussion of the challenges and work to go and a comparison with the magnetic control processes of other missions with similar magnetic cleanliness constraints.

Abstract

The recently recovered Antarctic achondrites Graves Nunatak 06128 and 06129 are unique meteorites that represent high-temperature asteroidal processes in the early solar system never before identified in any other meteorite. They represent products of early planetesimal melting (4564.25 [+ or -] 0.21 Ma) and subsequent metamorphism of an unsampled geochemical reservoir from an asteroid that has characteristics similar to the brachinite parent body. This melting event is unlike those predicted by previous experimental or geochemical studies, and indicates either disequilibrium melting of chondritic material or melting of chondritic material under volatile-rich conditions. Abstract

We present new reconstructions of images of main belt Asteroids 9 Metis, 18 Melpomene, 19 Fortuna, 216 Kleopatra, and 624 Hektor, made with the uncorrected Wide-Field/Planetary Camera (WF/PC) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Deconvolution with the MISTRAL algorithm demonstrates that these asteroids are clearly resolved. We determine diameters, albedos, and lower limits to axial ratios for these bodies. We also review the process used to restore the aberrated images. No surface features or companions are found, but the rotation of 216 Kleopatra is clearly seen. Abstract

Στις Μεσο-Μειοκαινικές λιμναίες αποθέσεις και τα δακιτικά ηφαιστειακά πετρώματα της λεκάνης Κύμης-Αλιβερίου έχουν παρατηρηθεί σταθερά μικρές εγκλίσεις σε παλαιομαγνητικές μετρήσεις οι οποίες έχουν αναφερθεί ως αποδεικτικό στοιχείο είτε για τοπική γεωμαγνητική ανωμαλία είτε για μετατόπιση προς βορρά της περιοχής του Αιγαίου. Παρουσιάζονται νέα δεδομένα μετρήσεων παλαιομαγνητισμού σε λιμναία στρώματα τα οποία δεν παρουσιάζουν μικρές εγκλίσεις και είναι συμβατά με απόθεση κοντά στο σημερινό γεωγραφικό πλάτος τους. Οι ιδιαίτερα μικρές εγκλίσεις και αποκλίσεις προς τα ανατολικά που έχουν αναφερθεί στις ηφαιστειακές διεισδύσεις του Οξύλιθου είναι αποτελέσματα ακατάλληλης διόρθωσης ως προς οριζόντιο άξονα. Οι υπερβολικά μικρές παλαιομαγνητικές εγκλίσεις που έχουν αναφερθεί στα πλουτώνια σώματα της Μυκόνου και τη Νάξου, Μέσο-Μειοκαινικής ηλικίας παραμόρφωσης, είναι συμβατές με επαναπροσανατολισμό μιας αρχικής θερμο-παραμένουσας μαγνήτισης που προέκυψε κατά την ψύξη τους κάτω από 580°C την οποία ακολούθησε ιξωδοελαστική παραμόρφωση σε θερμοκρασίες 400-500°C. Δευτερεύουσες μαγνητίσεις που παρατηρήθηκαν στα πετρώματα αυτά αντικατοπτρίζουν, πιθανότατα, τη διαδικασία μίας σταθερής -χημικής προέλευσης- παραμένουσας μαγνήτισης, παράλληλα με την προϋπάρχουσα μαγνήτιση υψηλής θερμοκρασίας, ως αποτέλεσμα της δημιουργίας μαγκεμίτη σε χαμηλή θερμοκρασία (, Consistently shallow paleomagnetic inclinations measured in Early to Middle Miocene lacustrine and dacitic volcanic rocks of the Kymi-Aliveri basin have been cited as evidence for an anomalous geomagnetic field geometry or northward drift of the Aegean Sea region. We present new paleomagnetic data from the lacustrine beds that are instead not anomalously shallow and consistent with deposition near their present-day latitude as predicted by global apparent polar wander paths. Anomalously shallow inclinations and easterly declinations reported from the Oxylithos volcanics are an artifact of an inappropriate tilt correction. The excessively shallow paleomagnetic inclinations reported from the deformed Middle Miocene plutons on Mykonos and Naxos are consistent with reorientation of an original thermoremanent magnetization acquired during cooling below 580°C by subsequent ductile strain at temperatures of 400-500°C. 19. Segmentation of the Hellenides recorded by Pliocene initiation of clockwise block rotation in Central Greece

Abstract

New paleomagnetic data from Early Miocene to Pliocene terrestrial sedimentary and volcanic rocks in Central Greece constrain the history of vertical-axis rotation along the central part of the western limb of the Aegean arc. The present-day pattern of rapid block rotation within a broad zone of distributed deformation linking the right-lateral North Anatolian and Kephalonia continental transform faults initiated after Early Pliocene time, resulting in a uniform clockwise rotation of 24.3±6.5° over a region >250. km long and >150. km wide encompassing Central Greece and the western Cycladic archipelago. Because the published paleomagnetic dataset requires clockwise rotations of >50° in Western Greece after ~17. Ma, while our measurements resolve no vertical-axis rotation of Central Greece between ~15. Ma and post-Early Pliocene time, a large part of the clockwise rotation of Western Greece must have occurred during the main period of contraction within the external thrust belt of the Ionian Zone between ~17 and ~15. Ma. Pliocene initiation of rapid clockwise rotation in Central and Western Greece reflects the development of the North Anatolia-Kephalonia Fault system within the previously extended Aegean Sea region, possibly in response to entry of dense oceanic lithosphere of the Ionian Sea into the Hellenic subduction zone and consequent accelerated slab rollback. The development of the Aegean geometric arc therefore occurred in two short-duration pulses characterized by rapid rotation and strong regional deformation. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
