2. Fano Resonances in Majorana Bound States - Quantum Dot Hybrid Systems

Abstract

We consider a quantum wire, containing two Majorana bound states (MBS) at its ends that are coupled to a current lead on one side and to a quantum dot (QD) on the other side. Using the method of full counting statistics we calculate the conductance and the zero-frequency noise. Using an effective low-energy model, we analyze in detail the Andreev reflection probability as a function of the various system parameters and show that it exhibits a Fano resonance (FR) line shape in the case of a weakly coupled QD as a function of the QD energy level when the two MBS overlap. The asymmetry parameter changes sign as the bias voltage is tuned through the MBS overlap energy. The FR is mirrored as a function of the QD level energy as long as tunneling to the more distant MBS is negligible. However, if both MBS are coupled to the lead and the QD, the height as well as the asymmetry of the line shapes cease to respect this symmetry. These two exclusive cases uniquely distinguish the coupling to a MBS from the coupling to a fermionic bound state that is shared between the two MBS. We complement the analysis by employing a discretized one-dimensional p-wave superconductor (Kitaev chain) for the quantum wire and show that the features of the effective low-energy model are robust towards a more complete Hamiltonian and also persist at finite temperature., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures; minor changes, references updated

3. Electron transport in multiterminal networks of Majorana bound states

Abstract

We investigate electron transport through multiterminal networks hosting Majorana bound states (MBS) in the framework of full counting statistics (FCS). In particular, we apply our general results to T-shaped junctions of two Majorana nanowires. When the wires are in the topologically nontrivial regime, three MBS are localized near the outer ends of the wires, while one MBS is localized near the crossing point, and when the lengths of the wires are finite adjacent MBS can overlap. We propose a combination of current and cross-correlation measurements to reveal the predicted coupling of four Majoranas in a topological T~junction. Interestingly, we show that the elementary transport processes at the central lead are different compared to the outer leads, giving rise to characteristic non-local signatures in electronic transport. We find quantitative agreement between our analytical model and numerical simulations of a tight-binding model. 4. Chiral Majorana edge states in HgTe quantum wells

Abstract

HgTe-based quantum wells (QWs) recently attracted a lot of attention for the realization of a two-dimensional topological insulator with protected helical edge states. Another class of topological systems are topological superconductors (TSCs) with Majorana edge states. In this paper, we show how proximity induced s-wave superconductivity in the bulk of HgTe-QWs and in the presence of a Zeeman field can exhibit a TSC with chiral Majorana edge states. We calculate the topological invariants and the corresponding Majorana edge states explicitly within a four-band model accounting for inversion symmetry breaking terms due to Rashba spin-orbit coupling and bulk inversion asymmetry present in these QWs., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, submitted to New Journal of Physics, "Focus on Majorana Fermions in Condensed Matter"

7. A Short Discussion of Stephen Houlgate's Hegel on Being

Abstract

It is a heroic enterprise to develop a systematic reading of Hegel's Doctrine of Being, the first of three books in the Science of Logic. The basic idea of Houlgate's grand interpretation of Hegel's three parts of this Doctrine, which I call the Logic of Quality, Quantity and Measure, is that Hegel demands a ‘presuppositionless derivation of categories’ (II: ix). Hegel on Being(in short: HoB) presents a thoroughgoing and rigorous interpretation in a kind of dialogue(as I would characterize what HoBmarks as ‘Excursus’) with Kant (I: 19–46, 307–73; II: 171–79) and especially Frege's formal logic and his attempts of a predicative definition of numbers (II: 25–138). In any case, HoBmakes us aware of the really problematic presuppositions in post-Fregean Analytic Philosophy.

Abstract

Analytical philosophy after Frege’s logicism and Russell’s logical atomism presupposes sortal domains of individual “entities” for which we already have defined their identities and elementary predicates. Such “things” exist only in ideal “possible world” which are nothing but structured sets of purely mathematical sets. In contrast to such purely abstract models, Hegel analyses the role of conceptual differentiations and corresponding default inferences in the real world. Here, all objects are spatially and temporally finite. Even if real things move according to certain forms, they are only moments in holistic processes. Moreover, the forms are no objects of immediate empirical observation but presuppose successfully reproducible actions and speech acts. As a result, no semantics of world-related reference can do without Hegel’s categories, which go far beyond the means of merely relational mathematical logic

Abstract

Parece útil distinguirmos, de um lado, normas que implicitamente governam nossas ações e determinam a correção em termos de formas de cooperação (linguísticas e não-linguísticas) e, de outro lado, regras explícitas que nos dizem o que podemos ou que devemos fazer sob algumas condições. Consequentemente, regras são feitas explícitas em um sistema de sentenças (hipotéticas e com premissas) e sentenças que expressam regras. Sob esta perspectiva, os conectivos lógicos e quantificadores podem ser vistos como meios para expressar regras admissíveis complexas, i.e., casos ideais. No caso não-puro ou empírico de palavras relacionadas ao mundo, admissibilidade se torna a condição da harmonia geral da relação entre diferenciação e padrão anexado de inferências dos correspondentes conceitos “inferencialmente densos”. No Tractatus, Wittgenstein não enxerga ainda a diferença entre sentenças estruturantes que expressam inferências paradigmáticas para casos prototípicos e suas aplicações empíricas. Uma vez que o tratamento de casos excepcionais deve ser externalizado para bons julgamentos em aplicações singulares e particulares, nós precisamos enxergar o contraste entre um “e” sempre monotônico em sentenças estruturantes ou teorias puras e o não-monotônico “mas”, que não é apenas um “e” com algumas conotações irrelevantes, como Frege disse: as formas dialógicas do seu uso não podem nem mesmo ser expressas por uma lista de regras ou sentenças.

Abstract

none 24 si In a 24-month, multicenter, open-label, randomized trial, 715 de novo kidney transplant recipients were randomized at 10-14 weeks to convert to everolimus (n = 359) or remain on standard calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) therapy (n = 356; 231 tacrolimus; 125 cyclosporine), all with mycophenolic acid and steroids. The primary endpoint, change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from randomization to month 12, was similar for everolimus versus CNI: mean (standard error) 0.3(1.5) mL/min/1.732 versus -1.5(1.5) mL/min/1.732 (p = 0.116). Biopsy-proven acute rejection (BPAR) at month 12 was more frequent under everolimus versus CNI overall (9.7% vs. 4.8%, p = 0.014) and versus tacrolimus-treated patients (2.6%, p < 0.001) but similar to cyclosporine-treated patients (8.8%, p = 0.755). Reporting on de novo donor-specific antibodies (DSA) was limited but suggested more frequent anti-HLA Class I DSA under everolimus. Change in left ventricular mass index was similar. Discontinuation due to adverse events was more frequent with everolimus (23.6%) versus CNI (8.4%). In conclusion, conversion to everolimus at 10-14 weeks posttransplant was associated with renal function similar to that with standard therapy overall. AbstractIn order to understand Hegel's gnomic oracle according to which the ‘I’ is a ‘We’, the notion of a personalsubject is explained by its competence to perform personal roles in a pre-given partition of roles. Explicit divisions of labour by contractual promises are special cases that presuppose the general case of an already established social practice. On the other hand, methodological individualism is right to stress that we actualize joint intentions only via corresponding instantiations. In performing our parts, we form a plural subject, a we-group. The result of what each of us does is what we do, and the generic ‘We’ turns into the generic ‘I’.

Abstract

HERAKLESwas a 1‐year randomized, multicenter trial. Patients were randomized at 3 months after kidney transplantation to remain on cyclosporine‐based therapy, switch to everolimus without a calcineurin inhibitor (CNI), or switch to everolimus with low‐exposure cyclosporine. Overall, 417 of 497 (83.9%) patients from the core study entered a 4‐year extension study. The randomized regimen was continued to year 5 in 75.9%, 41.9% and 24.6% of patients in the standard‐CNI,CNI‐free and low‐CNIgroups, respectively. Adjusted estimated GFRat year 5 was significantly higher in the CNI‐free group versus standard CNI(difference 7.2 mL/min/1.73 m2, P< .001) or low CNI(difference 7.6 mL/min/1.73 m2, P< .001). For patients who continued randomized therapy for 5 years, differences were 14.4 mL/min/1.73 m2and 10.1 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively. Biopsy‐proven acute rejection occurred during the 4‐year extension study in 7.6%, 8.6%, and 9.0% of patients in the standard‐CNI,CNI‐free and low‐CNIgroups, respectively (P= .927). In conclusion, conversion to a CNI‐free everolimus regimen 3 months after kidney transplantation improved long‐term graft function, particularly in patients who continued the CNI‐free regimen. Low CNIwith everolimus did not improve renal function. Efficacy was comparable between groups but frequent immunosuppression changes should be taken into account. Five‐year follow‐up data from patients randomized at three months after kidney transplantation to receive standard calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) therapy, everolimus‐based CNI‐free therapy, or everolimus with low‐exposure CNI show that early CNI withdrawal maintains better long‐term renal function without an increase in biopsy‐proven acute rejection, with a similar rate of infections and a low rate of discontinuations due to adverse events in all three treatment groups.

Abstract

In a 24‐month, multicenter, open‐label, randomized trial, 715 de novokidney transplant recipients were randomized at 10–14 weeks to convert to everolimus (n = 359) or remain on standard calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) therapy (n = 356; 231 tacrolimus; 125 cyclosporine), all with mycophenolic acid and steroids. The primary endpoint, change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from randomization to month 12, was similar for everolimus versus CNI: mean (standard error) 0.3(1.5) mL/min/1.732versus −1.5(1.5) mL/min/1.732(p = 0.116). Biopsy‐proven acute rejection (BPAR) at month 12 was more frequent under everolimus versus CNIoverall (9.7% vs. 4.8%, p = 0.014) and versus tacrolimus‐treated patients (2.6%, p < 0.001) but similar to cyclosporine‐treated patients (8.8%, p = 0.755). Reporting on de novodonor‐specific antibodies (DSA) was limited but suggested more frequent anti‐HLAClass I DSAunder everolimus. Change in left ventricular mass index was similar. Discontinuation due to adverse events was more frequent with everolimus (23.6%) versus CNI(8.4%). In conclusion, conversion to everolimus at 10–14 weeks posttransplant was associated with renal function similar to that with standard therapy overall. Rates of BPARwere low in all groups, but lower with tacrolimus than everolimus. In a multicenter, open‐label, randomized trial of de novokidney transplant recipients, conversion to everolimus at 10–14 weeks posttransplant is associated with similar renal function as in patients who continue to standard tacrolimus or cyclosporine therapy, with low rates of biopsy‐proven acute rejection in all groups, but lower rates with tacrolimus than everolimus.

Abstract

AbstractThe problem of evaluating philosophical texts is not only an institutional problem for philosophers. It transcends our own discipline. In a globalized word, English seems to be the lingua franca of all the sciences, much more than Latin ever was. But if we do not appreciate the systematic differences between articulating the ‚results‘ in the ‚natural‘ sciences (which focus on facts and technical know-how) on the one hand and normative and philosophical disputes about reasonable developments of forms of articulation and understanding in the ‚Geisteswissenschaften‘ on the other, there is a great danger of transnational regionalism — especially if we limit philosophical thinking and research to one language. Instead, we should treasure the diverse traditions and experiences as they are manifested in different languages. In consequence, the policy of evaluating international visibility of philosophic journals, as proposed by the European Science Foundation (ESF), must be changed.
