Wind environment is important in architectural sustainable design, as existing studies show that it can be considerably influenced by building morphologies. This study aimed to develop a data-mining framework to quantitatively evaluate and compare influences on Low-Wind-Velocity Area (LWVA) of common cuboid-form buildings with typical morphological parameters. The data-mining framework was originally developed by integrating multiple computational methods for rapid in-depth iterative analyses, including the generation of building models using parametric modelling, the big data generation based on hybrid model, and the statistical metric analysis method. The hybrid model was created by combining the CFD model and machine learning model. The accuracy and efficiency of the framework were fully demonstrated through the comprehensive validation and analyses of different models. The data of more than fifty thousand building cases with different morphological parameters and relevant wind conditions were generated and analyzed. Influences on LWVA of morphological parameters of cuboid-form building was comprehensively evaluated, including the visualization of multiple parameters, calculation and comparison of several correlation coefficients. It suggested that the reduction of height and width on the windward side would significantly decrease the LWVA and promote the outdoor ventilation. The change of depth would have relatively limited influence on the LWVA. Multivariate regression model-fit and variance analyses were further implemented, and it was found that there was a relatively significant linear correlation between the LWVA and morphological parameters. The equation of multivariate regression model was provided for extra rapid prediction. The study outcome could contribute to efficient evaluation of LWVA and provide useful information for sustainable design.

Building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) façades are a promising technique for improving building energy performance. This study develops energy simulation models of different photovoltaic-integrated shading devices (PVSDs) in single-story and multi-story office buildings. A cross-region study in China is carried out to explore the energy performance of PVSDs in five climate zones. The shading effect of the upper PVSDs is taken into account. The results show that (1) PVSDs can be applicable in hot and cold climates; shading effects lead to a notable difference in the optimal PVSDs style. The average comprehensive energy saving ratios of different PVSDs ranged from 16.12% (fixed PV louvres in the vertical plane) to 51.95% (lower single panel). The most rewarding PVSDs are for single-story buildings in Kunming and the least suitable are for multi-story buildings in Guangzhou. (2) In climate zones with little air-conditioning energy consumption, avoiding considerably increased lighting consumption by PVSDs is vital. (3) To reduce shading effects, solar panels with smaller widths or vertical placements can be adopted. In addition, the distance of the PV modules from the top edge of the windows is also critical. Building performance evaluation in the early design stage enables maximum benefits for the same input (total area of PV panels). The research methodology and data analysis presented can guide parameters design and the geographical applicability of PVSDs, providing a reference for optimal building energy performance.

Evapotranspiration is a vital component of the land surface process, thus, a more accurate estimate of evapotranspiration is of great significance to agricultural production, research on climate change, and other activities. In order to explore the spatiotemporal variation of evapotranspiration under global climate change in the Pearl River Basin (PRB), in China, this study conducted a simulation of actual evapotranspiration (ETa) during 1960−2014 based on the variable infiltration capacity (VIC) model with a high spatial resolution of 0.05°. The nonparametric Mann−Kendall (M−K) test and partial correlation analysis were used to examine the trends of ETa. The dominant climatic factors impacting on ETa were also examined. The results reveal that the annual ETa across the whole basin exhibited a slight but not significant increasing trend during the 1960−2014 period, whereas a significant decreasing trend was found during the 1960−1992 period. At the seasonal scale, the ETa showed a significant upward trend in summer and a significant downward trend in autumn. At the spatial scale, the ETa generally showed a decreasing, but not significant, trend in the middle and upper stream of the PRB, while in the downstream areas, especially in the Pearl River Delta and Dongjiang River Basin, it exhibited a significant increasing trend. The variation of the ETa was mainly associated with sunshine hours and average air pressure. The negative trend of the ETa in the PRB before 1992 may be due to the significant decrease in sunshine hours, while the increasing trend of the ETa after 1992 may be due to the recovery of sunshine hours and the significant decrease of air pressure. Additionally, we found that the “paradox” phenomenon detected by ETa mainly existed in the middle-upper area of the PRB during the period of 1960−1992.
