Refereed/Peer-reviewed This article has two objectives. Firstly, it examines the heterogeneous effects of the immigrant share on entrepreneurial activities. Secondly, it analyzes how national culture moderates the relationship between immigration and entrepreneurship activities. Using data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), we form a cross-sectional data set of 630,139 observations from 69 nations covering the period of 2012–2015, and use a grouped logit modeling approach. Building on the knowledge spillover and mixed embeddedness theories, our results reveal that the immigrant share is strongly associated with the likelihood for individuals to engage in entrepreneurship of different types—opportunity-driven, necessity-driven, export-oriented, and growth-oriented. Further analysis indicates that, although the immigrant share has a significant association with total entrepreneurial activities; there is no consistency across countries. Specifically, a one-standard deviation increment in the migrant share decreases the likelihood of total entrepreneurial activities (TEA) by 0.7 and 7.3 percentage points in the full sample and in middle-income countries, respectively. However, TEA benefits from immigration in high-income countries. Although national culture moderates the nexus between immigration and entrepreneurship, we find that cultural dimensions have a greater impact on middle-income countries entrepreneurial activities than on those of high-income countries.

This paper examines the effects of audit quality and firm growth on the relationship between corporate cash holdings and firm performance by using a sample of about 2500 unique non-financial Indian firms from 2000 to 2017, consisting of 51,388 firm-year observations. The results obtained by controlling for potential endogeneity using the dynamic panel generalised method of moment (GMM) approach show that cash holdings have an inverse U-shaped (concave) relationship with firm performance, which is stronger for firms with higher audit quality than firms with lower audit quality. Our findings also show that firm growth affects the cash holdings and firm performance relationship and the moderating effect of audit quality. Our study highlights the need for corporate managers to consider firm performance, audit quality and firm growth levels in policy decisions on cash holdings.

Refereed/Peer-reviewed Growing public concerns about sustainability and adopting environmentally responsible practices increase risks as well as opportunities for firms and banks. It is unclear whether being environmentally responsible matters for unlisted firms, which are significant contributors to the degradation of the environment but which are not under strict scrutiny like public listed firms. Using a sample of 3915 firms from developing economies, we investigate whether the superior environmental performance of unlisted firms leads them to better loan conditions. After controlling for endogeneity and sample selection bias, we find that firms with better environmental performance received approximately 6.4% higher loans (as a ratio of total sales) and that this effect is more prominent in small and medium firms. This finding supports an information asymmetry view of agency costs. Our results, however, show that environmental performance does not affect loan duration and collateral requirement, indicating no spillover economic effect of corporate environmental performance on loan conditions. This partially supports a new perspective of legitimacy theory in relation to the ‘greenwash strategy’. Overall, our study shows that strategically engaged environmental activities that are integrated with core business objectives represent an important business strategy for firms to enhance credit access.

Refereed/Peer-reviewed We investigate the formal credit effect on firm level innovations of small and medium enterprises in developing economies. Using the instrumental regression method, we control for potential endogeneity in innovation and credit relationships. Results indicate that formal credit availability boosts all four types of innovations. However, this impact is more significant for soft innovations compared to hard innovations. The results also point to the importance of informal finance as a source of external finance for firms where capital markets suffer from imperfections. Our study encourages the development of policy around financing for various types of innovation, which is especially suited for developing economies.

Refereed/Peer-reviewed Using gender as a theoretical framework, we analyse the dynamics of debt and equity financing during the COVID-19 pandemic for a cross-country sample of 8,921 private firms. We provide evidence of a slight gender bias in debt financing, with creditors favouring female entrepreneurs when dealing with cash flow problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. We find no evidence of gender bias in equity financing. The results are robust after controlling for a larger number of firm-specific characteristics and selection bias. We challenge the assumption of “gender-based discrimination” in the debt market, speculating that in the context of high uncertainty, prototypical forms of femininity may be advantageous as financial institutions seek to hedge their risk by favouring more conservative borrowers.

Refereed/Peer-reviewed This study investigates how firm-level political connections (PCs) play a role in their access to bank credit. We decompose the bank loan application process into the self-selection process of firms and the selection process of banks. Using 17,249 firms from 2018 to 2020, World Bank Enterprise surveys, we find that PCs are positively associated with the willingness of firms to apply for bank credit, the probability of credit approval, and favourable credit terms. Moreover, being a family firm raises the probability of securing credit approval by 21% and, when the firm is politically connected, the probability of obtaining secure loans without collateral is 11% greater than firms without political connections. In line with institutional theory, we argue that PCs promote efficiency by allowing private sector agents to circumvent cumbersome regulations in developing and transitional economies.

This study investigates the roles of different measures of environmental performance in firms’ financing choices. Environmental performance is measured through energy-efficiency investments, energy intensity, and energy consumption disclosures, which correspond to input-based, output-based, and disclosing perspectives, respectively. We further distinguish between debt financing and equity financing since environmental information asymmetry varies across investors, affecting the pecking order of financial sources. We use Eastern European and Central Asian firm-level data from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys conducted in 2019/2020. The study sample consists of above 3000 private firms from 42 countries. The logit model shows that alternative measures of environmental performance have varying impacts on financing. For a particular measure, it affects bank and equity financing in different ways. We also find that there is a direct joint impact of environmental investments and disclosures on equity financing. Overall, our study indicates that investors prefer to invest in eco-friendly firms rather than supporting conventional firms in reducing their environmental impacts. Hence, it is required to promote government support programs and loan guarantee programs to initiate firm-level environmental practices. Further, the complementary relationship indicates that firms may choose different environmental practices to reduce environmental information uncertainty, which improves the credibility of environmental information from the investors’ perspective. Refereed/Peer-reviewed This paper investigates the impact on remittances on financial inclusion of refugee migrants. While financial inclusion is gaining traction in the humanitarian and development literature, the linkage with the potential to improve the wellbeing of refugees, who are part of an upward spiral in numbers, has not been tackled. We examine World Bank survey data of 1041 Syrian refugees, using the inverse probability of treatment weighting propensity score analysis (IPTW). The method minimises the influence of outliers and addresses unobservable and missing data biases, which can plague survey based data. We observe that common indicators of financial inclusion when applied to refugees, given their limited access to formal financial services, may introduce a bias as the informal financial sector and excluded formal financial sector services do contribute to inclusiveness. We adopt a broader protocol for our data, measuring financial inclusion through six metrics stemming from G20 proposals. Overall, there is an opportunity to deepen financial inclusion for refugees who receive or send remittances. The possibility of expanding the financial inclusion options, and for this to percolate through to greater social inclusion, proffers practical commercial steps and policy enabling actions.
