Abstract

We investigate the influence of X-ray and gamma-ray irradiation on the photophysical properties of sub-monolayer CdTe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) immobilized in porous silica (PSiO2) scaffolds. The highly luminescent QD-PSiO2 thin films allow for straightforward monitoring of the optical properties of the QDs through continuous wave and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. The PSiO2 host matrix itself does not modify the QD properties. X-ray irradiation of the QD-PSiO2 films in air leads to an exponential decrease in QD emission intensity, an exponential blue-shift in peak emission energy, and substantially faster exciton decay rates with increasing exposure doses from 2.2 Mrad(SiO2) to 6.6 Mrad(SiO2). Gamma-ray irradiation of a QD-PSiO2 thin film at a total exposure dose of 700 krad(SiO2) in a nitrogen environment results in over 80% QD photodarkening but no concurrent blue-shift in peak emission energy due to a lack of photo-oxidative effects. Near-complete and partial reversal of irradiation-induced photodarkening was demonstrated on X-ray and gamma-ray irradiated samples, respectively, through the use of a surface re-passivating solution, suggesting that there are different contributing mechanisms responsible for photodarkening under different irradiation energies. This work contributes to improving the reliability and robustness of QD based heterogeneous devices that are exposed to high risk, high energy environments with the possibility of also developing QD-based large area, low-cost, re-useable, and flexible optical dosimeters.

Abstract

Using a combination of continuous wave and time-resolved spectroscopy, we study the effects of interfacial conditions on the radiative lifetimes and photoluminescence intensities of colloidal CdTe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a three-dimensional nanostructured silicon (NSi) matrix. The NSi matrix was thermally oxidized under different conditions to change the interfacial oxide thickness. QDs embedded in a NSi matrix with ~0.5 nm of interfacial oxide exhibited reduced photoluminescence intensity and nearly five times shorter radiative lifetimes (~16 ns) compared to QDs immobilized within completely oxidized, nanostructured silica (NSiO2) frameworks (~78 ns). Optical absorption by the sub-nm oxidized NSi matrix partially lowers QD emission intensities while non-radiative carrier recombination and phonon assisted transitions influenced by defect sites within the oxide and NSi are believed to be the primary factors limiting the QD exciton lifetimes in the heterostructures.

Abstract

Cyclones tracking northward across the Bay of Bengal represent a significant threat to life and safety when they make landfall. Surface moorings of the Ocean Moored Network for the Northern Indian Ocean in the Bay of Bengal have been deployed to provide real-time observations in support of improved alerts and predictions of cyclones. Engineering goals are both to develop robust surface moorings that survive and to field meteorological and oceanographic instruments that reliably provide data in real time. While the mooring design and reliability were previously reported, the focus here is on the motivations for installing the instrumentation, and on experience gained during the passage of cyclone Amphan in May 2020, examining the sensor as well as mooring performance. The paper presents reasons for fielding the chosen sensors, merits, and shortcomings during the effort to observe Amphan, and recommendations for how to better address the challenges of providing real-time observations of cyclones in the Bay of Bengal. David Martin's work has always bridged many worlds: the sacred and the secular, the world of power politics and of religious visions, of individual and society, and of poetry and rational analysis. His trenchant and uncompromising analyses of human social formations and their ideational concomitants have nevertheless provided many with a vision of that hope which must sustain scholarly analysis if it is not to become tedious and moribund. His sensitivity to tradition, to ritual, to received knowledge and the debt we owe to the past - even while appreciating the frisson of the radically new (as in his studies of Pentacostalism) - have made him one of only a small handful of scholars who could address the broad range of human religious expression and its implications for life in the world. Abstract

In Monte Carlo particle transport codes, it is often important to adjust reaction cross sections to reduce the variance of calculations of relatively rare events, in a technique known as non-analogous Monte Carlo. We present the theory and sample code for a Geant4 process which allows the cross section of a G4VDiscreteProcess to be scaled, while adjusting track weights so as to mitigate the effects of altered primary beam depletion induced by the cross section change. This makes it possible to increase the cross section of nuclear reactions by factors exceeding 10^4 (in appropriate cases), without distorting the results of energy deposition calculations or coincidence rates. The procedure is also valid for bias factors less than unity, which is useful, for example, in problems that involve computation of particle penetration deep into a target, such as occurs in atmospheric showers or in shielding.

Abstract

An algorithm has been developed for the Geant4 Monte-Carlo package for the efficient computation of screened Coulomb interatomic scattering. It explicitly integrates the classical equations of motion for scattering events, resulting in precise tracking of both the projectile and the recoil target nucleus. The algorithm permits the user to plug in an arbitrary screening function, such as Lens-Jensen screening, which is good for backscattering calculations, or Ziegler-Biersack-Littmark screening, which is good for nuclear straggling and implantation problems. 50. Evaluating residual anti-Xa levels following discontinuation of treatment-dose enoxaparin in patients presenting for elective surgery: a prospective observational trial.

Abstract

Introduction Prior studies have demonstrated that patients presenting for elective surgery may have higher-than-expected residual anti-Xa level activity at or beyond 24 hours following their last treatment dose of enoxaparin. Given that 24 hours of abstinence is currently recommended by both European and American societies before the performance of neuraxial or deep anesthetic/analgesic procedures, determining the actual timeframe at which residual anti-Xa level activity reliably falls below 0.2 IU/mL, the lower limit of the target range for thromboprophylaxis, is critical. Methods This was a prospective observational trial. Consenting patients on treatment-dose enoxaparin were randomized to either a 24-hour group (last dose at 07:00 the day prior to surgery) or a 36-hour group (last dose at 19:00 2 days prior to surgery). On arrival for surgery, blood samples were obtained to assess residual anti-Xa level activity and renal function. The primary outcome was residual anti-Xa level activity following the last treatment dose of enoxaparin. Incorporating all patients, linear regression modeling was performed to predict the timepoint at which the level of anti-Xa activity reliably fell below 0.2 IU/mL. Results 103 patients were analyzed. Time from the last dose at which residual anti-Xa activity fell below 0.2 IU/mL, based on the upper bound of the 95% CI, was 31.5 hours. No correlation overall between age, renal function, or sex was found. Conclusion Residual levels of anti-Xa activity do not reliably fall below 0.2 IU/mL 24 hours following discontinuation of treatment-dose enoxaparin. Therefore, current time-based guidelines are not conservative enough. Routine anti-Xa testing should be strongly considered, or current time-based guidelines should be reassessed.
