Abstract The PI3K/Akt pathway is overexpressed in nearly 50% of hepatocellular carcinomas and inhibits apoptosis by promoting the expression of antiapoptotic genes. Serine protease inhibitors have been shown to induce apoptosis in hepatoma cells by downregulating SPINK13 in the PI3K/Akt pathway. In this study, SPINK13 was expressed in lentiviral vectors. Changes in signaling pathway adapter proteins, apoptosis regulatory proteins, cell cycle regulatory proteins, and the biological behavior of hepatocellular carcinoma were observed in cell and nude mouse xenograft models. The underlying mechanism of endogenous SPINK13-induced apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma cells was explored via transcriptomics. As a result, endogenous SPINK13 might inhibit the activity of Furin protease, downregulate the Notch1/Hes1 pathway in a binding manner, activate the direct effector PTEN, inhibit Akt phosphorylation, inactivate the downstream PI3K/Akt pathway, and ultimately lead to mitochondrial apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in hepatoma cells. Therefore, the Notch1/Hes1/PTEN pathway may act upstream of SPINK13 to downregulate the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Our study helps elucidate the underlying mechanism of SPINK13 in anti-hepatocellular carcinoma and lays a theoretical foundation for the development of novel therapeutic serine protease inhibitors.

Abstract Delay-bandwidth product (DBP) is a key metric in slow light waveguides, requiring a balance between a large group index and broad bandwidth—two parameters that often involve a trade-off. Here, we propose and demonstrate a slow light waveguide with large DBP using a pseudospin-polarized transverse electromagnetic mode. This waveguide features a folded edge configuration that supports a 200% relative bandwidth from quasistatic limit (zero frequency) and an arbitrarily large group index. Owing to the pseudospin-polarized design, the dense folding would not introduce backscattering and the associated group velocity dispersion (GVD). The resulting gapless linear dispersion and pulse transmission behavior in folded edge waveguide are observed in microwave experiments. Our scheme provides a way to overcome the trade-off between group index and working bandwidth in slow light waveguide, which has potential applications in broadband optical buffering, light-matter interaction enhancement, terahertz radiation source and time domain processing.

Abstract The Mississippi Valley–type (MVT) deposits reached their maximum abundance during the final assembly of Pangea. The intense orogenic activity during this assembly in relatively low latitudes created abundant opportunities for the migration of sedimentary brines into the interior carbonate platforms landward of the orogenic belts, leading to the formation of MVT deposits. Thus, dating the MVT deposits can potentially aid in the reconstruction of the plate tectonic evolution during the assembly of Pangea. The Yangtze Craton hosts significant carbonate-hosted Zn–Pb deposits (> 60 Mt Pb + Zn metals), accounting for 30% of China’s Zn–Pb resources. However, determining the timing of zinc and lead mineralization in these reservoirs is challenging. This study employs LA-ICP-MS U–Pb geochronology on calcites to date Zn–Pb deposits hosted in Lower Cambrian limestone in the Huayuan orefield. Three generations of calcite formation were dated: the first recorded the pre-ore deposition of Lower Cambrian limestone at 517 ± 10 Ma, the second marked a hydrothermal event linked to stratiform sphalerite ore formation at 501.4 ± 8.4 Ma, and the third was associated with discordant breccia-hosted Zn–Pb mineralization at 397.5 ± 9.6 Ma. Our results indicate that Paleozoic carbonate-hosted Pb–Zn mineralization in the Yangtze Craton is linked to (1) the final assembly of Gondwana in the late Cambrian-early Ordovician (520–480 Ma); and (2) the intracontinental orogeny response to Jiangnan Uplift (420–400 Ma). This study highlights the temporal relationship between low temperature carbonate-hosted mineralization and orogenic events that are consistent with classic MVT models worldwide. It also contributes geochronological data for the reconstruction of plate-tectonic evolution during Pangea assembly. Furthermore, it demonstrates the potential of in situ U–Pb calcite geochronology to date ore deposits lacking syn-ore minerals suitable for traditional dating methods.

BackgroundWearable devices have attracted much attention from the market in recent years for their fitness monitoring and other health-related metrics; however, the accuracy of fitness tracking results still plays a major role in health promotion. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a host of latest wearable devices in measuring fitness-related indicators under various seminatural activities. MethodsA total of 44 healthy subjects were recruited, and each subject was asked to simultaneously wear 6 devices (Apple Watch 2, Samsung Gear S3, Jawbone Up3, Fitbit Surge, Huawei Talk Band B3, and Xiaomi Mi Band 2) and 2 smartphone apps (Dongdong and Ledongli) to measure five major health indicators (heart rate, number of steps, distance, energy consumption, and sleep duration) under various activity states (resting, walking, running, cycling, and sleeping), which were then compared with the gold standard (manual measurements of the heart rate, number of steps, distance, and sleep, and energy consumption through oxygen consumption) and calculated to determine their respective mean absolute percentage errors (MAPEs). ResultsWearable devices had a rather high measurement accuracy with respect to heart rate, number of steps, distance, and sleep duration, with a MAPE of approximately 0.10, whereas poor measurement accuracy was observed for energy consumption (calories), indicated by a MAPE of up to 0.44. The measurements varied for the same indicator measured by different fitness trackers. The variation in measurement of the number of steps was the highest (Apple Watch 2: 0.42; Dongdong: 0.01), whereas it was the lowest for heart rate (Samsung Gear S3: 0.34; Xiaomi Mi Band 2: 0.12). Measurements differed insignificantly for the same indicator measured under different states of activity; the MAPE of distance and energy measurements were in the range of 0.08 to 0.17 and 0.41 to 0.48, respectively. Overall, the Samsung Gear S3 performed the best for the measurement of heart rate under the resting state (MAPE of 0.04), whereas Dongdong performed the best for the measurement of the number of steps under the walking state (MAPE of 0.01). Fitbit Surge performed the best for distance measurement under the cycling state (MAPE of 0.04), and Huawei Talk Band B3 performed the best for energy consumption measurement under the walking state (MAPE of 0.17). ConclusionsAt present, mainstream devices are able to reliably measure heart rate, number of steps, distance, and sleep duration, which can be used as effective health evaluation indicators, but the measurement accuracy of energy consumption is still inadequate. Fitness trackers of different brands vary with regard to measurement of indicators and are all affected by the activity state, which indicates that manufacturers of fitness trackers need to improve their algorithms for different activity states.

In this study, the two Oxycarenidae species, O. gossypii Horváth, 1926 and Oxycarenus bicolor heraldus Distant, 1904, are redescribed, and their complete mitogenomes are sequenced and analyzed. The phylogeny of Lygaeoidea is examined using 45 complete mitogenomes of lygaeoid species and four outgroup species. The gene orientation and arrangement of the two mitogenomes are found to be consistent with typical Lygaeoidea mitochondrial features, comprising 37 genes, including 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs, and a control region. Nucleotide composition of the species was biased towards A and T, with the gene order identical to the putative ancestral arrangement of insects. Start codons, stop codons, RNAs, relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU), and nucleotide diversity (Pi) of Oxycarenidae exhibited characteristics similar to other families in Lygaeoidea. Bayesian-inference (BI) and maximum-likelihood (ML) methods were employed to investigate phylogenetic relationships using PCG datasets from selected species. Phylogenetic analyses reveal slightly different topologies between BI and ML methods, with variation primarily concentrated in Colobathristidae and Rhyparochromidae. Our study confirms that the two sequenced Oxycarenidae species formed a single clade, and the position of Oxycarenidae remains stable in both ML and BI phylogenetic trees. These findings expand the mitochondrial genome databases of Lygaeoidea and provide valuable insights into the phylogenetic relationships within Lygaeoidea or Pentatomomorpha.

Abstract Creativity is one defining characteristic of human species. There have been mixed findings on how creativity relates to well-being, and little is known about its relationship with career success. We conduct a large-scale genome-wide association study to examine the genetic architecture of occupational creativity, and its genetic correlations with well-being and career success. The SNP-h 2 estimates range from 0.08 (for managerial creativity) to 0.22 (for artistic creativity). We record positive genetic correlations between occupational creativity with autism, and positive traits and well-being variables (e.g., physical height, and low levels of neuroticism, BMI, and non-cancer illness). While creativity share positive genetic overlaps with indicators of high career success (i.e., income, occupational status, and job satisfaction), it also has a positive genetic correlation with age at first birth and a negative genetic correlation with number of children, indicating creativity-related genes may reduce reproductive success.

Abstract 3-dB couplers, which are commonly used in photonic integrated circuits for on-chip information processing, precision measurement, and quantum computing, face challenges in achieving robust performance due to their limited 3-dB bandwidths and sensitivity to fabrication errors. To address this, we introduce topological physics to nanophotonics, developing a framework for topological 3-dB couplers. These couplers exhibit broad working wavelength range and robustness against fabrication dimensional errors. By leveraging valley-Hall topology and mirror symmetry, the photonic-crystal-slab couplers achieve ideal 3-dB splitting characterized by a wavelength-insensitive scattering matrix. Tolerance analysis confirms the superiority on broad bandwidth of 48 nm and robust splitting against dimensional errors of 20 nm. We further propose a topological interferometer for on-chip distance measurement, which also exhibits robustness against dimensional errors. This extension of topological principles to the fields of interferometers, may open up new possibilities for constructing robust wavelength division multiplexing, temperature-drift-insensitive sensing, and optical coherence tomography applications.

Abstract Mitigating pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) and post-harvest food loss (PHFL) is essential for enhancing food securrity. To reduce food loss, the use of plant derived specialized metabolites can represent a good approach to develop a more eco-friendly agriculture. Here, we have discovered that soybean seeds hidden underground during winter by Tscherskia triton and Apodemus agrarius during winter possess a higher concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) compared to those remaining exposed in fields. This selection by rodents suggests that among the identified volatiles, 3-FurAldehyde (Fur) and (E)-2-Heptenal (eHep) effectively inhibit the growth of plant pathogens such as Aspergillus flavus, Alternaria alternata, Fusarium solani and Pseudomonas syringae. Additionally, compounds such as Camphene (Cam), 3-FurAldehyde, and (E)-2-Heptenal, suppress the germination of seeds in crops including soybean, rice, maize, and wheat. Importantly, some of these VOCs also prevent rice seeds from pre-harvest sprouting. Consequently, our findings offer straightforward and practical approaches to seed protection and the reduction of PHS and PHFL, indicating potential new pathways for breeding, and reducing both PHS and pesticide usage in agriculture.

Gaining insight into the underlying mechanisms driving nanoindentation-induced behavior in tungsten is essential for comprehending its mechanical properties. Although the plasticity of conventional pure tungsten under nanocontact conditions is well understood, these theoretical constructs may become inadequate when applied to irradiated tungsten due to the interplay between helium bubbles and dislocations. Here, we employed an integrated approach, combining crystal defect theories, molecular dynamics simulations, and machine learning, to explore the initiation and progression of dislocations in tungsten containing helium bubbles during nanoindentation, focusing on elucidating the impact of helium bubbles. In contrast to the typical dislocation nucleation in pure tungsten, the presence of helium bubbles mitigates local shear strain, thereby hindering dislocation nucleation and propagation, leading to a reduction of indentation force. Additionally, we conducted a comparative analysis between samples with and without helium bubbles, examining factors such as atomic displacement, strain localization parameters, dislocation line length, and stress component distribution. More importantly, a significant outcome of our study is the establishment of a relationship between the consistent alteration in the shape of helium bubbles and their size during micro-scale nanoindentation, achieved through machine learning techniques. Our findings reveal that the area occupied by helium bubbles post-nanoindentation is inversely correlated with indentation depth and directly linked to helium bubble size. These discoveries represent a notable advancement in understanding the effects of irradiation to a certain degree.

The interaction between irradiation defects and dislocations could lead to macroscopic hardening and embrittlement. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) and machine learning were conducted to study three-dimensional void- and Cu-cluster-induced kinetics models under interaction with dislocations in body-centered cubic Fe-based alloys. MD Results show that dislocation climb and shear are two types of interaction mechanism based on the defect size. Combined MD results and machine learning, it was found that the dislocation length increased linearly with an increase in the size of the defects after the interaction. In addition, the number of atoms in the Cu-rich cluster and the reduced number of vacancies in the voids had a square relationship with the defect size where 0.85D2 is for Cu-rich cluster and 0.50D2 is for void. Furthermore, atomic-scale three-dimensional irradiation-induced defect kinetics models were developed and incorporated into the crystal plasticity finite element model (CPFEM). We also analyzed the contributions of various defects to the increase in the yield stress during CPFEM simulation. Compared with DBH model, the prediction of MD data-driven CPFEM matches better with the experimental data. Cluster contributed the most to hardening with low obstacle strength due to the higher number density compared with dislocation loops and voids. The loops also contributed to hardening; however, their contribution was smaller than that of the clusters. Although the number density and size of voids were minimized, they may have contributed because of the high obstacle strengths. This work can indeed deepen the understanding of irradiation effect in Fe-based alloys.

Although the phylum Chloroflexota is ubiquitous, its biology and evolution are poorly understood due to limited cultivability. Here, we isolated two motile, thermophilic bacteria from hot spring sediments belonging to the genus Tepidiforma and class Dehalococcoidia within the phylum Chloroflexota. A combination of cryo-electron tomography, exometabolomics, and cultivation experiments using stable isotopes of carbon revealed three unusual traits: flagellar motility, a peptidoglycan-containing cell envelope, and heterotrophic activity on aromatics and plant-associated compounds. Outside of this genus, flagellar motility has not been observed in Chloroflexota, and peptidoglycan-containing cell envelopes have not been described in Dehalococcoidia. Although these traits are unusual among cultivated Chloroflexota and Dehalococcoidia, ancestral character state reconstructions showed flagellar motility and peptidoglycan-containing cell envelopes were ancestral within the Dehalococcoidia, and subsequently lost prior to a major adaptive radiation of Dehalococcoidia into marine environments. However, despite the predominantly vertical evolutionary histories of flagellar motility and peptidoglycan biosynthesis, the evolution of enzymes for degradation of aromatics and plant-associated compounds was predominantly horizontal and complex. Together, the presence of these unusual traits in Dehalococcoidia and their evolutionary histories raise new questions about the timing and selective forces driving their successful niche expansion into global oceans.

Accurate crop mapping is critical for agricultural decisions and food security. Despite the widespread use of machine learning and deep learning in remote sensing for crop classification, mapping crops in mountainous smallholder farming systems remains challenging. In particular, cloudy and rainy weather limits high-quality satellite imagery, potentially limiting the availability of reliable data for classification. Additionally, the substantial intraclass variability among multiple crops further impedes classification accuracy. In this context, this study sought to resolve these two issues by applying a hybrid approach that combines multisource remote sensing data and deep metric learning. For the first challenge, multisource remote sensing data, including Landsat-8, Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-1 data from the Google Earth Engine, were integrated to provide more comprehensive information on crop growth and differences. To address the second challenge, we proposed a 2D-CNN network enhanced by CBAM attention and an online hard example mining strategy. The network focuses on the channel-spatial information of crop samples and their surrounding pixels while promoting the convergence of similar crop samples within the latent feature space and enhancing the separation among different samples. This process is exemplified through a case study of crop mapping in Jiangjin District, Chongqing city, an area representing the typical mountain smallholder farming systems in Southwest China. Compared to six state-of-the-art methods, RF, SVM, XGBoost, ResNet18, and DMLOHM, our approach achieves the highest performance, with 93.99% overall accuracy, a kappa coefficient of 0.9253, and excellent F1 scores across numerous crop categories. The results of this study provide an effective solution for crop classification in complex mountainous regions and have promising potential for mapping under challenging natural conditions.

BackgroundExtensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) has a dismal prognosis owing to its high aggressiveness, rapid drug resistance, and early metastasis. ES-SCLC responds well to first-line chemotherapy, and chemotherapy coupled with immunotherapy can further improve overall survival. However, the long-term survival of patients remains unsatisfactory because of its high recurrence rate and the poor efficacy of second-line treatment. Although local radiotherapy is an important component of the overall treatment for ES-SCLC, its value in the age of immunotherapy remains controversial.Case descriptionA 54-year-old male with ES-SCLC achieved a complete response (CR), as determined using enhanced computed tomography (CT) after four cycles of immunochemotherapy (serplulimab, carboplatin, and etoposide). Whole-body positron emission tomography-CT was performed during maintenance treatment with serplulimab, which showed primary lung, liver, and bone metastatic lesions with CR. However, several mediastinal lymph nodes exhibited glucose metabolism uptake, and new lesions appeared on the head. The patient underwent palliative radiotherapy of the head and consolidative thoracic radiotherapy of the chest and continued maintenance treatment with serplulimab. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging of the head suggested good control of metastatic lesions (CR). The patient received first-line immunotherapy for approximately 20 months.ConclusionsThis report presents a patient with ES-SCLC who underwent local radiotherapy in addition to serplulimab as maintenance therapy. Although the programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression level was negative and a PD-1 inhibitor instead of a PD-L1 inhibitor was used, the patient did not experience significant pneumonia during treatment, and the efficacy of the current treatment was evident. This treatment model warrants further clinical investigation.

The integrable substrate for THz modulation directly influences both the quality of films and THz absorption. Currently, the available THz substrate candidate library is still not clear. Here, we have carried out a systematic investigation of commonly used commercial substrates, including Si, quartz SiO2, MgO, Al2O3, GdScO3 and TbScO3 in the range of 0.4–1.6[Formula: see text]THz. It is found that low resistance Si, TSO and GSO are certainly not appropriate for THz light modulation due to their relatively higher absorption and dielectric constant, while the rest show better THz transmittance, low refractive index and loss. However, the dielectric constant and refractive index of high resistance Si are generally two times larger than quartz SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO. Compared with Al2O3 and MgO, quartz SiO2 shows at least 50% lower dielectric constant, refractive index and absorption, making it the best candidate. Our research is believed to build the rich substrate candidate library for THz range light modulation.

In this work we study the effects of different factors of dislocation loop on its obstacle strength when interacting with an edge dislocation. At first, the interaction model for dislocation and dislocation loop is established and the full and partial absorption mechanism is obtained. Then, the effect of temperature, size and burgers vector of dislocation loop are investigated. The relation between the obstacle strength and irradiation dose has been established, which bridges the irradiation source and microscale properties. Except that, the obstacle strength of C, Cr, Ni, Mn, Mo and P decorated dislocation loop is studied. Results show that the obstacle strength for dislocation loop decorated by alloy element decreases in the sequence of Cr, Ni, Mn, C, P and Mo, which could be used to help parameterize and validate crystal plasticity finite element model and therein integrated constitutive laws to enable accounting for irradiation-induced chemical segregation effects.

Abstract Surface acoustic wave (SAW) gas sensors based on the acoustoelectric effect exhibit wide application prospects for in situ gas detection. However, establishing accurate models for calculating the scattering parameters of SAW gas sensors remains a challenge. Here, we present a coupling of modes (COM) model that includes the acoustoelectric effect and specifically explains the nonmonotonic variation in the center frequency with respect to the sensing film’s sheet conductivity. Several sensing parameters of the gas sensors, including the center frequency, insertion loss, and phase, were experimentally compared for accuracy and practicality. Finally, the frequency of the phase extremum (FPE) shift was determined to vary monotonically, and the range of selectable test points was wide, making the FPE an appropriate response parameter for leveraging in SAW gas sensors. The simulation results of the COM model were highly consistent with the experimental results. Our study is proposed to provide theoretical guidance for the future development of gas SAW sensors.

Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a significant global health issue with high incidence and mortality. Yin Yang 1 (YY1) is a powerful transcription factor that acts dual roles in gene activation and repression. High expression level of YY1 has been reported in CRC, indicating the existence of stable factors of YY1 in CRC cells. We aimed to identify the key molecules and underlying mechanisms responsible for stabilizing YY1 expression in CRC. Mass spectrometry analysis was utilized to identify USP7 as a potential molecule that interacted with YY1. Mechanically, USP7 stabilizes YY1 expression at the protein level by interfering its K63 linkage ubiquitination. YY1 exerts its oncogenic function through transcriptionally activating TRIAP1 but suppressing LC3B. In addition, at the pathological level, there is a positive correlation between the expression of YY1 and the budding of CRC. This study has revealed the intricate interplay between YY1 and USP7 in CRC, suggesting that they could serve as novel therapeutic targets or predictive biomarkers for CRC patients.

Irradiation defects are known to impede the dislocation motion in irradiated reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels. However, consistent experimental studies of the respective irradiation defects and relevant theoretical studies of the interaction mechanism and hardening model are still lacking. In this study, the microstructure and irradiation-induced hardening of RPV steels are investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM)/energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In A508-Ⅲ steel, 9R, twinned fcc, and other typical Cu-rich cluster structures are observed using TEM after the irradiation experiment. Based on the experimental results, MD simulations are performed to study the interactions between the dislocations and Cu clusters or voids. A mechanism diagram of the interaction mechanism coupling the effects of temperature and defect size is shown for both the Cu clusters and voids. A relevant hardening model is proposed based on the MD data, which is further discussed in relation to the macroscopic mechanical properties. Furthermore, the irradiation-induced hardening of the RPV steel is successfully predicted, which further demonstrates the reliability of the proposed unified hardening model.

The poor temperature stability of the BaTiO3 ceramic has always been the main problem limiting their application. This situation has been improved but sacrifices the intrinsic polarization, which significantly reduces the dielectric constant. In this work, the mechanism of multiple polarization was creatively introduced, and the temperature stability and dielectric properties of BaTiO3-based ceramics are simultaneously enhanced. In particular, the Ba0.9925Bi0.005Ti0.995Ca0.005O2.995 (BBTC0.5) ceramic sample achieved excellent temperature stability (−14.8% to 8.85%) over an ultra-wide temperature range (−47 to 400 °C) and exhibited colossal permittivity (27,125, 25 °C, 1 kHz) and low dielectric loss (0.07, 25 °C, 1 kHz). The dielectric properties, complex impedance spectra combined with XPS results indicate that the defective dipole clusters (Ti3+-VO..-Ti3+, BiBa. and CaTi″-VO..) along with surface effects lead to colossal permittivity effect. More importantly, SEM images show the presence of the second phase at grain boundaries, which prevent the carriers within the grains from accumulating at the grain boundaries. As a result, the dielectric loss was reduced and the temperature stability was further extended. This strategy breaks the traditional limitation of single/noncomprehensive enhancement by single-polarization mechanism, and is of great theoretical and practical significance to promote the research and application of high-performance BaTiO3-based ceramic materials.

BackgroundThe efficacy of the angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI) sacubitril/valsartan (SV) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been established. Two meta-analyses have demonstrated its significant role in enhancing ventricular remodeling. However, the effectiveness and safety of its use in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) remain unclear.Methods and resultsUp to October 2023, we searched the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases for studies involving ESRD patients treated with ARNI. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Effect sizes were reported as mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We included 10 studies, encompassing 649 patients. ARNI was associated with improvements in blood pressure and left ventricular (LV) function in ESRD patients, including systolic blood pressure (SBP) (MD −12.76 mmHg; 95% CI, −18.03 to −7.5 mmHg), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (MD −6.41 mmHg; 95% CI, −8.10 to −4.72 mmHg), and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (MD, 4.61%; 95% CI, 1.78%−7.44%). Hemoglobin levels improved, but there were no significant statistical differences in other biomarkers for dialysis. Sacubitril/valsartan was generally well tolerated in ESRD patients. Improved indices of left ventricular function were noted at 6 months and were more pronounced at 12 months. A linear relationship between LVEF and left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) was observed, as indicated by a high correlation coefficient (r-value).ConclusionARNI effectively reduces blood pressure and enhances left ventricular function in dialysis patients, with early treatment associated with greater benefits. ARNI also demonstrates a favorable safety profile in this population. Further prospective studies are required to fully understand the long-term efficacy and safety of sacubitril/valsartan in dialysis patients.

BackgroundDespite increasing awareness, silica dust–induced silicosis still contributes to the huge disease burden in China. Worryingly, recent silica dust exposure levels and silicosis risk in Chinese noncoal mines remain unclear. ObjectiveWe aimed to determine recent silica dust exposure levels and assess the risk of silicosis in Chinese noncoal mines. MethodsBetween May and December 2020, we conducted a retrospective cohort study on 3 noncoal mines and 1 public hospital to establish, using multivariable Cox regression analyses, prediction formulas of the silicosis cumulative hazard ratio (H) and incidence (I) and a cross-sectional study on 155 noncoal mines in 10 Chinese provinces to determine the prevalence of silica dust exposure (PDE), free silica content, and total dust and respirable dust concentrations. The qualitative risk of silicosis was assessed using the International Mining and Metals Commission’s risk-rating table and the occupational hazard risk index; the quantitative risk was assessed using prediction formulas. ResultsKaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed significant differences in the silicosis probability between silica dust–exposed male and female miners (log-rank test χ21=7.52, P=.01). A total of 126 noncoal mines, with 29,835 miners and 4623 dust samples, were included; 13,037 (43.7%) miners were exposed to silica dust, of which 12,952 (99.3%) were male. The median PDE, free silica content, total dust concentration, and respirable dust concentration were 61.6%, 27.6%, 1.30 mg/m3, and 0.58 mg/m3, respectively, indicating that miners in nonmetal, nonferrous metal, small, and open-pit mines suffer high-level exposure to silica dust. Comprehensive qualitative risk assessment showed noncoal miners had a medium risk of silicosis, and the risks caused by total silica dust and respirable silica dust exposure were high and medium, respectively. When predicting H and I over the next 10, 20, and 30 years, we assumed that the miner gender was male. Under exposure to current total silica dust concentrations, median I10, I20, and I30 would be 6.8%, 25.1%, and 49.9%, respectively. Under exposure to current respirable silica dust concentrations, median I10, I20, and I30 would be 6.8%, 27.7%, and 57.4%, respectively. These findings showed that miners in nonmetal, nonferrous metal, small, and open-pit mines have a higher I and higher qualitative silicosis risk. ConclusionsChinese noncoal miners, especially those in nonmetal, nonferrous metal, small, and open-pit mines, still suffer high-level exposure to silica dust and a medium-level risk of silicosis. Data of both total silica dust and respirable silica dust are vital for occupational health risk assessment in order to devise effective control measures to reduce noncoal mine silica dust levels, improve miners’ working environment, and reduce the risk of silicosis.

Topological boundary modes, which are localized at the edge of topological materials, have received significant attention for their various applications in robust waveguides, optical cavities, and topological lasers. To envision their further applications in tunable devices, we propose and demonstrate a scheme to dynamically manipulate topological boundary modes by exploiting the two translation parameters of photonic crystals. We find that the translation not only transports the Wannier state similar to conventional Thouless pumping but also induces a nonzero Chern number in the two-dimensional synthetic space while preserving the time-reversal symmetry in the real space. Through changing the translation, gapless and tunable topological boundary modes are demonstrated. As a specific application, we show a dynamic bandpass filter with real-time tuning over 100% bandgap, a capability that cannot be achieved with only one translation parameter. Our design opens a venue for the development of tunable topological devices based on synthetic parameter dimension and can be generalized to other bosonic systems.
