Incense burning is an important topic facing many countries in Asia. As a highly urbanized area, the overlapping of urban functional blocks in Hong Kong has resulted in many temples being located near residential and commercial areas. Therefore, the pollutants emitted by temples’ incense burning could cause severe health problems to the population. This study identified 366 Hong Kong temples and classified them into four categories: open, semi-closed, closed, and non-active, according to their incense burning characteristics. Among them, open temples have the largest average area and least quantity. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that building density, greenery density, water density, and temple weight are the most highly influencing factors. The temple weight is the only loading factor with a contributing factor from PC2, especially in 2006 and 2011. Furthermore, the linear regression model has been applied to analyze the correlation between variables. Although this study did not reach conclusive results about the actual impact of each temple type, the model results confirm that the temple is a sub-factor to respiratory mortality. This provides the theoretical foundation for government policy establishment of temple construction planning and community optimization in Asian cities.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disease in the elderly, the exact pathogenesis of which remains incompletely understood, and effective preventive and therapeutic drugs are currently lacking. Cholesterol plays a vital role in cell membrane formation and neurotransmitter synthesis, and its abnormal metabolism is associated with the onset of AD. With the continuous advancement of imaging techniques and molecular biology methods, researchers can more accurately explore the relationship between cholesterol metabolism and AD. Elevated cholesterol levels may lead to vascular dysfunction, thereby affecting neuronal function. Additionally, abnormal cholesterol metabolism may affect the metabolism of β-amyloid protein, thereby promoting the onset of AD. Brain cholesterol levels are regulated by multiple factors. This review aims to deepen the understanding of the subtle relationship between cholesterol homeostasis and AD, and to introduce the latest advances in cholesterol-regulating AD treatment strategies, thereby inspiring readers to contemplate deeply on this complex relationship. Although there are still many unresolved important issues regarding the risk of brain cholesterol and AD, and some studies may have opposite conclusions, further research is needed to enrich our understanding. However, these findings are expected to deepen our understanding of the pathogenesis of AD and provide important insights for the future development of AD treatment strategies targeting brain cholesterol homeostasis.

The mechanisms underlying astrocyte heterogeneity in the developing mouse brain are poorly understood. The bHLH transcription factor Olig2 is essential for motoneuron and oligodendrocyte formation; however, its role in astrocyte development remains obscure. During cortical development, Olig2 is transiently expressed in immature developing astrocytes at neonatal stages and is progressively downregulated in astrocytes at late postnatal stages. To assess the function of Olig2 in astrocyte formation, we conditionally ablated Olig2 in a spatiotemporally controlled manner. In the Olig2-ablated cortex and spinal cord, the formation of astrocytes in the white matter is severely compromised. Temporally controlled mutagenesis revealed that postnatal Olig2 function is required for astrocyte differentiation in the cerebral white matter. By contrast, astrocytes in the cortical gray matter are formed, but with sustained GFAP upregulation in the superficial layers. Cell type-specific mutagenesis and fate-mapping analyses indicate that abnormal astrocyte formation is at least in part attributable to the loss of Olig2 in developing astrocytes and their precursors. Thus, our studies uncover a crucial role for Olig2 in white matter astrocyte development and reveal divergent transcriptional requirements for, and developmental sources of, morphologically and spatially distinct astrocyte subpopulations. CD133 has been identified as a putative neoplastic stem cell marker in esophageal carcinoma. However, the prognostic value of CD133 overexpression in patients with esophageal carcinoma remains controversial. A meta-analysis of previous studies was performed, in order to assess the association of CD133 overexpression with the clinicopathological characteristics of esophageal carcinoma patients. A total of 7 studies, including 538 patients, were subjected to the final analysis. Our results indicated that a positive CD133 expression was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis [odds ratio (OR)=3.09, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.93-4.95; P<0.00001], clinical stage (OR=4.26, 95% CI: 1.55-11.73; P=0.005) and histopathological grade (OR=2.40, 95% CI: 1.16-4.94; P=0.02). There was no statistically significant association of CD133 with depth of invasion (OR=1.89, 95% CI: 0.42-8.43; P=0.41). Based on the results of this study, we concluded that CD133 is an efficient prognostic factor in esophageal carcinoma. Higher CD133 expression is significantly associated with lymph node metastasis, clinical stage and histopathological grade.

Lapatinib, an inhibitor of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) phosphorylation, has been reported to inhibit several types of tumors such as HER2-overexpressing breast cancer. However, the effect of lapatinib on the malignant phenotype of human osteosarcoma (OS) cells and the potential molecular mechanisms remain unclear. To elucidate the effect of lapatinib on OS, two OS cell lines, U2-OS and MG-63, were utilized in the present study. Various concentrations of lapatinib were used to treat OS cells for different time durations. Cell proliferation was evaluated by MTT and colony formation assays. Flow cytometry (FCM) was used to evaluate cell apoptosis. Wound healing and Transwell invasion assays were performed to examine the migratory and invasive abilities of the cells. To investigate the possible molecular mechanisms involved, the expression of p-HER2, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), p-AKT, AKT and fatty acid synthase (FASN) protein was detected by western blotting. MTT assays showed that lapatinib inhibited the proliferation of U2-OS and MG-63 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner, and the rate of colony formation of the lapatinib-treated cells was significantly lower when compared to those cells not treated with lapatinib in both cell lines. FCM assay revealed a significantly higher apoptotic rate in the lapatinib-treated OS cells. Wound healing and Transwell invasion assays revealed that the migratory and invasive abilities of OS cells were significantly inhibited by lapatinib (P<0.05). Western blotting showed that lapatinib suppressed the activity of HER2-PI3K/AKT-FASN in U2-OS and MG-63 cells in vitro. These results suggest that lapatinib may alter the malignant phenotype of OS cells via downregulation of the activity of the HER2-PI3K/AKT-FASN signaling pathway in vitro. Thus, lapatinib may be an effective chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of osteosarcoma.
