We present spectroscopic confirmation of nine M5 or later Serpens Core candidate members, identified using a combination of CFHT WIRCam photometry and IRTF SpeX spectroscopy. Through spectral fitting, we find that the latest of these nine candidate members is best fit by an L0 spectral standard (in the range of M8–L2), implying a mass of ∼0.01–0.035M⊙. If confirmed as a cluster member, this would be one of the lowest mass Serpens Core objects ever discovered. We present analysis of the physical properties of the sample, as well as the likely membership of the candidate Serpens Core members.

We present photometric light curves of the stellar occultation event of the star UCAC4 341-187633 on 2018 August 15 by the minor planet (134340) Pluto. Photometric observations were carried out using the 2.1-m telescope at the San Pedro Mártir Observatory and the 1.3-m telescopes at Sites 2 and 3 of the Trans-Neptunian Automated Occultation Survey (TAOS II) project, and using a portable 0.4-m telescope from Bahía Asunción, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Different filters were used with the 2.1-m telescope and the TAOS II telescopes, whilst observations with the portable system were performed with no filter. The resulting light curves from the San Pedro Mártir Observatory show clear structures, with at least two bright spikes observed on ingress and one more observed on egress as the star traverses the atmosphere of the dwarf planet. The light curve from the portable telescope (440 km away) measured a longer duration for the occultation event, because the shadow of Pluto was observed at a lower latitude. Normalized light curves were created for the 2.1-m telescope, the Site 3 telescope of the TAOS II and the portable telescope. These normalized light curves show a difference in amplitude.

Beta-amyloid (Aβ1-42) triggers the phosphorylation of tau protein in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the relationship between phosphorylated tau (p-tau) and Aβ1-42 in the blood is not elucidated. We investigated the association in individuals with AD (n = 62, including amnesic mild cognitive impairment and dementia), Parkinson's disease (n = 30), frontotemporal dementia (n = 25), and cognitively unimpaired controls (n = 41) using immunomagnetic reduction assays to measure plasma Aβ1-42 and p-tau181 concentrations. Correlation and regression analyses were performed to examine the relation between plasma levels, demographic factors, and clinical severity. Both plasma Aβ1-42 and p-tau concentrations were significantly higher in AD and frontotemporal dementia than in the controls and Parkinson's disease. A significant positive association was found between plasma p-tau and Aβ1-42 in controls (r = 0.579, P < 0.001) and AD (r = 0.699, P < 0.001) but not in frontotemporal dementia or Parkinson's disease. Plasma p-tau was significantly associated with clinical severity in the AD in terms of scores of clinical dementia rating (r = 0.288, P = 0.025) and mini-mental state examination (r = -0.253, P = 0.049). Regression analysis showed that plasma Aβ1-42 levels explain approximately 47.7% of the plasma p-tau levels in the AD after controlling age, gender, and clinical severity. While in non-AD participants, the clinical dementia rating explained about 47.5% of the plasma p-tau levels. The disease-specific association between plasma Aβ1-42 and p-tau levels in AD implies a possible synergic effect in mechanisms involving these two pathological proteins' genesis.

Electrical power is essential in human life. Thus, the security and reliability of its supply are of critical importance in a country’s industrial and economic development. The leakage and improper use of electricity may cause serious problems such as fire and electrocution. To prevent such incidents and minimize the loss of life and property, a leakage current detector and warning system are developed in this study. With a high-precision current transformer and high-gain linear converter, the detector effectively detects leakage current over 1 mA, which is validated in different methods. The detector can be integrated into widely used electric meters (Taipower Datong’s sub-meter model D4S) easily, and information on detected leakage current is transmitted to the cloud server through narrowband IoT wireless communication (NB-IoT) to warn users and management personnel of the electrical power line. The proposed detector and system are expected to prevent the fire caused by leakage current which was the main cause of the fire at homes and buildings and can be an effective means to manage the electrical powerline system and metering facilities.

In this work, we present the general procedure for the robotic observations of the Transneptunian Automated Occultation Survey (TAOS II). The project aims to detect small TNOs (Transneptunian Objects) by serendipitous stellar occultations. To do so TAOS II will operate three 1.3 m telescopes equipped with CMOS cameras which are able to read about 10,000 stars in multiple subapertures at a 20 Hz cadence. At such rates, it will be possible to identify diffraction features in the lightcurves, helping us to estimate a distance and object size to each occultation event. TAOS II is installed in the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional in San Pedro Mártir, Ensenada, México (OAN-SPM). The site has good observing conditions, typically with around 260 useful nights per year. Here, we describe the different process to be performed in a typical observing night: system start up and shut down, monitoring observing conditions, acquisition of calibration images, field selection, pointing, camera synchronization, determination of aperture sizes and positions, and high speed image acquisition.

Although the concentrations of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) biomarkers Aβ1–40, Aβ1–42 and tau protein are very low in human plasma, ultrasensitive assays such as immunomagnetic reduction (IMR) are able to precisely quantify them. Review articles have described the detailed working mechanism of IMR and revealed the feasibility of detecting early-stage AD by assaying these plasma biomarkers with IMR. In this review, we aimed to compare the significance of these plasma biomarkers in predicting cognitive decline in patients with Down syndrome, stroke, or amnestic mild cognitive impairment based on findings in the literature. We found that plasma Aβ1–42 might play the predominant role in predicting cognitive decline in these patients.

Background: The stability of proteins in the collecting tubes after blood draw is critical to the measured concentrations of the proteins. Although the guidelines issued by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) suggest centrifugation should take place within 2 h of drawing blood, it is very difficult to follow these guidelines in hospitals or clinics. It is necessary to study the effect of times to blood processing on the stability of the proteins of interest. Methods: In this work, the plasma proteins of interest were those relevant to dementia, such as amyloid β 1–40 (Aβ1–40), Aβ1–42, Tau protein (Tau), and α-synuclein. The times to blood processing after blood draw ranged from 0.5 to 8 h. The storage temperatures of blood were room temperature (approx. 25°C) and 30°C. After storage, blood samples were centrifuged at room temperature to obtain plasma samples. Ultrasensitive immunomagnetic reduction was applied to assay these proteins in the plasma. Results: The levels of plasma Aβ1–40, Tau, and α-synuclein did not significantly change until 8 h after blood draw when stored at room temperature. Plasma Aβ1–42 levels did not change significantly after 8 h of storage at room temperature before blood processing. Higher storage temperatures, such as 30°C, for blood samples accelerated the significant variations in the measured concentrations of Aβ1–40, Tau, and α-synuclein in plasma. Conclusion: According to these results, for clinical practice, it is suggested that blood samples be stored at room temperature for no longer than 4.5 h after blood draw until centrifugation for the assay of dementia biomarkers in plasma.

We present 850 $��$m polarimetric observations toward the Serpens Main molecular cloud obtained using the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations probe the magnetic field morphology of the Serpens Main molecular cloud on about 6000 au scales, which consists of cores and six filaments with different physical properties such as density and star formation activity. Using the histogram of relative orientation (HRO) technique, we find that magnetic fields are parallel to filaments in less dense filamentary structures where $N_{H_2} < 0.93\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ (magnetic fields perpendicular to density gradients), while being perpendicular to filaments (magnetic fields parallel to density gradients) in dense filamentary structures with star formation activity. Moreover, applying the HRO technique to denser core regions, we find that magnetic field orientations change to become perpendicular to density gradients again at $N_{H_2} \approx 4.6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. This can be interpreted as a signature of core formation. At $N_{H_2} \approx 16 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ magnetic fields change back to being parallel to density gradients once again, which can be understood to be due to magnetic fields being dragged in by infalling material. In addition, we estimate the magnetic field strengths of the filaments ($B_{POS} = 60-300~��$G)) using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and discuss whether the filaments are gravitationally unstable based on magnetic field and turbulence energy densities., 18 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Tao-Chung Ching et al., We present 850 μm dust polarization observations of the massive DR21 filament from the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and the SCUBA-2 camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We detect ordered magnetic fields perpendicular to the parsec-scale ridge of the DR21 main filament. In the subfilaments, the magnetic fields are mainly parallel to the filamentary structures and smoothly connect to the magnetic fields of the main filament. We compare the POL-2 and Planck dust polarization observations to study the magnetic field structures of the DR21 filament on 0.1–10 pc scales. The magnetic fields revealed in the Planck data are well-aligned with those of the POL-2 data, indicating a smooth variation of magnetic fields from large to small scales. The plane-of-sky magnetic field strengths derived from angular dispersion functions of dust polarization are 0.6–1.0 mG in the DR21 filament and ∼0.1 mG in the surrounding ambient gas. The mass-to-flux ratios are found to be magnetically supercritical in the filament and slightly subcritical to nearly critical in the ambient gas. The alignment between column density structures and magnetic fields changes from random alignment in the low-density ambient gas probed by Planck to mostly perpendicular in the high-density main filament probed by James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Dust polarization observations at optical wavelengths help to understand the dust grain properties and trace the plane-of-the-sky component of the magnetic field. In this study, we make use of the $I$-band polarization data acquired from AIMPOL along with the distances ($d$) and extinction ($A_{V}$) data to study the variation of polarization fraction ($P$) as a function of $A_{V}$ and $d$ towards the star-forming region, NGC 1893. We employ a broken power-law fit and Bayesian analysis on extinction ($A_{V}$) versus polarization efficiency ($P$/$A_{V}$) and distance ($d$) versus rate of polarization ($P$/$d$). We find that $P$/$A_{V}$ shows a break at an extinction of $\sim$0.9 mag, whereas $P/d$ exhibits a break at a distance of $\sim$1.5 kpc. Based on these, we categorize the dust towards NGC 1893 into two populations: (i) foreground dust confined to $A_{V}$ $$ $\sim$1 mag and distance beyond $\sim$2 kpc. Foreground dust exhibits higher polarization efficiency but a lower polarization rate, whereas Perseus dust shows a lower polarization efficiency but a slightly higher polarization rate. Hence, we suggest that while polarization efficiency reveals the dust grain alignment, the rate of polarization infers about the distribution of dust grains towards NGC 1893. Hwang et al., We present and analyze observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μm toward the central 1 × 1 pc hub-filament structure of Monoceros R2 (Mon R2). The data are obtained with SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields in Star-forming Region Observations survey. The orientations of the magnetic field follow the spiral structure of Mon R2, which are well described by an axisymmetric magnetic field model. We estimate the turbulent component of the magnetic field using the angle difference between our observations and the best-fit model of the underlying large-scale mean magnetic field. This estimate is used to calculate the magnetic field strength using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, for which we also obtain the distribution of volume density and velocity dispersion using a column density map derived from Herschel data and the C18O (J = 3 − 2) data taken with HARP on the JCMT, respectively. We make maps of magnetic field strengths and mass-to-flux ratios, finding that magnetic field strengths vary from 0.02 to 3.64 mG with a mean value of 1.0 ± 0.06 mG, and the mean critical mass-to-flux ratio is 0.47 ± 0.02. Additionally, the mean Alfvén Mach number is 0.35 ± 0.01. This suggests that, in Mon R2, the magnetic fields provide resistance against large-scale gravitational collapse, and the magnetic pressure exceeds the turbulent pressure. We also investigate the properties of each filament in Mon R2. We report the discovery of substellar objects in the young star cluster IC 348 and the neighboring Barnard 5 dark cloud, both at the eastern end of the Perseus star-forming complex. The substellar candidates are selected using narrowband imaging, i.e., on and off photometric technique with a filter centered around the water absorption feature at 1.45 microns, a technique proven to be efficient in detecting water-bearing substellar objects. Our spectroscopic observations confirm three brown dwarfs in IC 348. In addition, the source WBIS 03492858+3258064, reported in this work, is the first confirmed brown dwarf discovered toward Barnard 5. Together with the young stellar population selected via near- and mid-infrared colors using the Two Micron All Sky Survey and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, we diagnose the relation between stellar versus substellar objects with the associated molecular clouds. Analyzed by Gaia EDR3 parallaxes and kinematics of the cloud members across the Perseus region, we propose the star formation scenario of the complex under influence of the nearby OB association., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 24 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables

We present detections of stellar flares of Wolf\,359, an M6.5 dwarf in the solar neighborhood (2.41~pc) known to be prone to flares due to surface magnetic activity. The observations were carried out from 2020 April 23 to 29 with a 1-m and a 0.5-m telescope separated by nearly 300~km in Xinjiang, China. In 27~hr of photometric monitoring, a total of 13 optical flares were detected, each with a total energy of $\gtrsim 5 \times 10^{29}$~erg. The measured event rate of about once every two hours is consistent with those reported previously in radio, X-ray and optical wavelengths for this star. One such flare, detected by both telescopes on 26 April, was an energetic event with a released energy of nearly $10^{33}$~erg. The two-telescope lightcurves of this major event sampled at different cadences and exposure timings enabled us to better estimate the intrinsic flare profile, which reached a peak of up to 1.6 times the stellar quiescent brightness, that otherwise would have been underestimated in the observed flare amplitudes of about $0.4$ and $0.8$, respectively, with single telescopes alone. The compromise between fast sampling so as to resolve a flare profile versus a longer integration time for higher photometric signal-to-noise provides a useful guidance in the experimental design of future flare observations., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

We present a detailed characterisation and theoretical interpretation of the broadband emission of the paradigmatic TeV blazar Mrk 421, with a special focus on the multi-band flux correlations. Methods. The dataset has been collected through an extensive multi-wavelength campaign organised between 2016 December and 2017 June. The instruments involved are MAGIC, FACT, Fermi-LAT, Swift, GASP-WEBT, OVRO, Medicina, and Metsahovi. Additionally, four deep exposures (several hours long) with simultaneous MAGIC and NuSTAR observations allowed a precise measurement of the falling segments of the two spectral components. Results. The very-high-energy (VHE; E 100 GeV) gamma rays and X-rays are positively correlated at zero time lag, but the strength and characteristics of the correlation change substantially across the various energy bands probed. The VHE versus X-ray fluxes follow dierent patterns, partly due to substantial changes in the Compton dominance for a few days without a simultaneous increase in the X-ray flux (i.e., orphan gamma-ray activity). Studying the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) during the days including NuSTAR observations, we show that these changes can be explained within a one-zone leptonic model with a blob that increases its size over time. The peak frequency of the synchrotron bump varies by two orders of magnitude throughout the campaign. Our multi-band correlation study also hints at an anti-correlation between UV-optical and X-ray at a significance higher than 3. A VHE flare observed on MJD 57788 (2017 February 4) shows gamma-ray variability on multi-hour timescales, with a factor ten increase in the TeV flux but only a moderate increase in the keV flux. The related broadband SED is better described by a two-zone leptonic scenario rather than by a one-zone scenario.We find that the flare can be produced by the appearance of a compact second blob populated by high energetic electrons spanning a narrow range of Lorentz factors, from 0 min = 2104 to 0 max = 6105. © 2021 Georg Thieme Verlag. We present the four-year survey results of monthly submillimeter monitoring of eight nearby ($< 500 $pc) star-forming regions by the JCMT Transient Survey. We apply the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram technique to search for and characterize variability on 295 submillimeter peaks brighter than 0.14 Jy beam$^{-1}$, including 22 disk sources (Class II), 83 protostars (Class 0/I), and 190 starless sources. We uncover 18 secular variables, all of them protostars. No single-epoch burst or drop events and no inherently stochastic sources are observed. We classify the secular variables by their timescales into three groups: Periodic, Curved, and Linear. For the Curved and Periodic cases, the detectable fractional amplitude, with respect to mean peak brightness, is $\sim4$ % for sources brighter than $\sim$ 0.5 Jy beam$^{-1}$. Limiting our sample to only these bright sources, the observed variable fraction is 37 % (16 out of 43). Considering source evolution, we find a similar fraction of bright variables for both Class 0 and Class I. Using an empirically motivated conversion from submillimeter variability to variation in mass accretion rate, six sources (7 % of our full sample) are predicted to have years-long accretion events during which the excess mass accreted reaches more than 40 % above the total quiescently accreted mass: two previously known eruptive Class I sources, V1647 Ori and EC 53 (V371 Ser), and four Class 0 sources, HOPS 356, HOPS 373, HOPS 383, and West 40. Considering the full protostellar ensemble, the importance of episodic accretion on few years timescale is negligible, only a few percent of the assembled mass. However, given that this accretion is dominated by events of order the observing time-window, it remains uncertain as to whether the importance of episodic events will continue to rise with decades-long monitoring., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present the results of simultaneous 450 $\mu$m and 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the massive star forming region NGC 2071IR, a target of the BISTRO (B-fields in Star-Forming Region Observations) Survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and SCUBA-2 camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find a pinched magnetic field morphology in the central dense core region, which could be due to a rotating toroidal disk-like structure and a bipolar outflow originating from the central young stellar object, IRS 3. Using the modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we obtain a plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of 563$\pm$421 $\mu$G in the central $\sim$0.12 pc region from 850 $\mu$m polarization data. The corresponding magnetic energy density of 2.04$\times$10$^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-3}$ is comparable to the turbulent and gravitational energy densities in the region. We find that the magnetic field direction is very well aligned with the whole of the IRS 3 bipolar outflow structure. We find that the median value of polarization fractions, 3.0 \%, at 450 $\mu$m in the central 3 arcminute region, which is larger than the median value of 1.2 \% at 850 $\mu$m. The trend could be due to the better alignment of warmer dust in the strong radiation environment. We also find that polarization fractions decrease with intensity at both wavelengths, with slopes, determined by fitting a Rician noise model, of $0.59 \pm 0.03$ at 450 $\mu$m and $0.36 \pm 0.04$ at 850 $\mu$m, respectively. We think that the shallow slope at 850 $\mu$m is due to grain alignment at the center being assisted by strong radiation from the central young stellar objects., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

We present the star formation activity around the emission nebula Sh2-112. At a distance of $\sim2.1$~kpc, this \ion{H}{2} complex, itself 3~pc in radius, is illuminated by the massive star (O8\,V) BD$+$45\,3216. The associated molecular cloud extends in angular scales of $2\fdg0\times0\fdg83$, corresponding to linear sizes of 73~pc by 30~pc, along the Galactic longitude. The high-resolution ($30\arcsec$) extinction map reveals a chain of dust clumps aligned with the filament-like structure with an average extinction of $A_{V} \sim 2.78$~mag, varying up to a maximum of $\sim17$~mag. Our analysis led to identification of a rich population ($\sim 500$) of young (average age of $\sim 1$~Myr) stars, plus a numerous number ($\sim 350$) of H$\alpha$ emitters, spatially correlated with the filamentary clouds. Located near the edge of the cloud, the luminous star BD$+$45\,3216 has created an arc-like pattern as the ionizing radiation encounters the dense gas, forming a blister-shaped morphology. We found three distinct young stellar groups, all coincident with relatively dense parts of the cloud complex, signifying ongoing star formation. Moreover, the cloud filament (excitation temperature $\sim 10$~K) traced by the CO isotopologues and extending nearly $\sim 80$~pc is devoid of ionized gas except at the dense cores (excitation temperature $\sim$ 28--32~K) wherein significant ionized emission excited by OB stars (dynamical age $\sim$ 0.18--1.0~Myr) pertains. The radial velocity is dynamic (median $\sim -3.65$~km~s$^{-1}$) along the main filament, increasing from Galactic east to west, features mass flow to form the massive stars/clusters at the central hubs., Comment: 29 pages, 16 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

In recent years, rapid development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has caused many problems in security. In order to prevent UAVs from random intrusion of no-fly zones and famous buildings, various anti-UAV defence systems (AUDS) have been developed in the world, including UAV radars, high energy laser guns, and other anti-UAV defence systems. However, these systems are expensive, making them difficult to be accepted by the general public. This paper develops a dual-axis rotary tracking platform for the anti-UAV defence system. It performs a scanning mission for aerial reconnaissance with full-color camera and thermal imager. When UAV enters the scope of visual detection, visual recognition function of this system immediately performs UAV dynamic coordinate tracking. By controlling the two-axis step motor with a dual-axis rotary platform, the dynamic coordinate of the UAV is tracked. The coordinate is then locked and the UAV image is aligned into frame center. In the meantime, Google Map is used for recording UAV flying trajectory. In the end, this article uses DJI MAVIC UAV to perform tracking test in the air. This research successfully performed the tracking task using methods of thermal and full color image at 30 m and 100 m. This tracking system also smoothly let Google Map perform dynamic path tracking of the UAV. This paper successfully completed the design and testing of a UAV tracking device, a key technology of anti-UAV defence systems.

Fire detector central controls installed in present buildings of Taiwan belong to the P-type. All fire alarm sensors in the same zone are connected to the same circuit. On-site inspectors cannot confirm the source of the fire as a fire occurs and the circuit is disconnected. There is also no way of distinguishing which detector is out of service in the event of a fire alarm as the disconnected circuit causes detectors to be disabled. The on-site inspector does not respond in time. That is the main cause of increased fire damage. In practice, the detection of circuit disconnection must be carried out by fire practitioners using ladders or scaffolds to measure the circuit voltage of all detectors on the circuit. In addition to increasing maintenance costs with high floors, it also increases the risk of inspectors falling from heights. Therefore, this study provides a fire alarm disconnection detector of a P-type fire detector control. We designed an extension rod equipped with a 1 kHz, 10 V p-p AC signal audio transmitter/receiver for preventing the fire alarm the disconnected circuit, connecting to the audio transmitter, and using the extension rod to detect all detectors that are disconnected on the circuit to reduce the danger of fire practitioners during the detection and improve the detection efficiency.

We have obtained sensitive dust continuum polarization observations at 850 μm in the B213 region of Taurus using POL-2 on SCUBA-2 at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the B-fields in STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations allow us to probe magnetic field (B-field) at high spatial resolution (∼2000 au or ∼0.01 pc at 140 pc) in two protostellar cores (K04166 and K04169) and one prestellar core (Miz-8b) that lie within the B213 filament. Using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, we estimate the B-field strengths in K04166, K04169, and Miz-8b to be 38 ± 14, 44 ± 16, and 12 ± 5 μG, respectively. These cores show distinct mean B-field orientations. The B-field in K04166 is well ordered and aligned parallel to the orientations of the core minor axis, outflows, core rotation axis, and large-scale uniform B-field, in accordance with magnetically regulated star formation via ambipolar diffusion taking place in K04166. The B-field in K04169 is found to be ordered but oriented nearly perpendicular to the core minor axis and large-scale B-field and not well correlated with other axes. In contrast, Miz-8b exhibits a disordered B-field that shows no preferred alignment with the core minor axis or large-scale field. We found that only one core, K04166, retains a memory of the large-scale uniform B-field. The other two cores, K04169 and Miz-8b, are decoupled from the large-scale field. Such a complex B-field configuration could be caused by gas inflow onto the filament, even in the presence of a substantial magnetic flux.
