We evaluated the inhibition activity of extracts from two common plants, moringa (Moringa oleifera) and croton (Croton californicus), against Vibrio parahaemolyticus (IPNGS16), which causes acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND). The experiment was developed in three phases. First, extracts were prepared, and phytochemical screening of plants was performed. Second, microbiological tests were applied to calculate the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Finally, two bioassays were performed on juvenile shrimp by administering the extracts (first) in shrimp feed at 24 and 72 h, pre-infection, and the second in feed and directly to the culture water. Based on preliminary results of antimicrobial activity, an extract concentration of 60 mg mL-1 inhibited V. parahaemolyticus (IPNGS16) at a final concentration of approximately 1×106 CFU mL-1. Bioassays were carried out in order to determine the V. parahaemolyticus (IPNGS16) median lethal dose (LC50) for juvenile Penaeus vannamei (0.20 ± 0.05 g); the LC50 was 85×103 CFU mL-1. As a first test, the extracts were added to commercial feed at doses of 20, 40, and 60 mg mL-1. After feeding, the shrimp were infected with V. parahaemolyticus (IPNGS16), and mortality was recorded. For the first infection time (24 h), survival was 46 and 33% with croton and moringa, respectively; for the second infection time (72 h), survival was 16 and 25% with croton and moringa. Application of antibacterial extracts directly to culture water were effective against V. parahaemolyticus (IPNGS16). The best result (94% survival) was obtained with a high dose (3.6 mg mL-1 or 30%) of moringa extracts added directly to culture water. Moringa methanol extracts produce active compounds capable of inhibiting replication of V. parahaemolyticus (IPNGS16) in shrimp aquaculture and reducing shrimp mortality.

The yellowlegs shrimp Penaeus californiensis is an oceanic species that approaches the coastal zone for its reproduction. However, in the southern Gulf of California, this species also enters coastal lagoons to grow and reproduce. To test the hypothesis that the growth of P. californiensis differs between these two environments, monthly samplings of shrimp were made in the interior of the Navachiste coastal lagoon and its adjacent marine area. To determine growth, age groups were identified using the size structures over time. Five cases of the Schnute model were adjusted to the data, and the best case was selected using a multi-model selection approach. A sigmoid-shaped curve best represented the female data (case 2), and the inverted exponential curve (case 5; equivalent to the Von Bertalanffy growth function) was best for males. Average growth differed between sexes () but not between environments ().

Length-frequency data of juveniles and sub-adults of Penaeus californiensis were analyzed, collected from January 2002 to January 2003 in the Agiabampo lagoon system and adjacent marine coastal zone. Six models were parameterized with four criteria, in addition to a mixed criterion (fat-tail and depensatory), to estimate the parameters that best fit the growth curve. The model that best fit was the Johnson model with the mixed criterion in females and males: k = 6.02 (5.93-6.12); L ∞ = 188.8 (186.3-191.8); t 0 = 0.0221 (0.0207-0.0234); and: k = 8.98 (8.85-9.12); L ∞ =153.3 (151.7-155.0); t 0 = 0.0386 (0.0378-0.0394), respectively. The conclusion is that: 1) the mixture approach found in this study as best leads to the application of a very high-performance objective function to analyze individual length-at-age variability, 2) shows that the best model to describe the growth trajectory of P. californiensis in marine and estuarine environments is a sigmoid curve with an inflection point near to cero age (Johnson model).

This study aimed to determine weight-size relationships and to fit the best growth model of the Cortez oyster Crassostrea corteziensis from early juvenile to adult during one single culture cycle. The morphometric data (n = 50 oysters sampled each two weeks during January 2010 to March 2011) of shell height-shell length [SH-SL], shell height-shell width [SH-SW], shell width-shell length [SW-SL], body weight-shell length [BW-SL], body weight-shell height [BW-SH] and body weight-shell-width [BW-SW] (log-transformed) were determined by regression analysis. The SL and SH measurements (R2 = 0.98) were consistently proportional to the BW, being the BW-SL and BW-SH morphometric relationships the more suitable for growth evaluation of C. corteziensis in culture. Four different equations of the Schnute model, as well as Special cases 1 and 2 (equivalent to the Von Bertalanffy growth model, VBGM, and Logistic models, respectively), were evaluated utilizing length-at-age data to estimate individual growth parameters. The parameters were obtained using the maximum likelihood algorithm and the Akaike information criterion was applied to rank the models examined. The growth curve displayed a rapid increase until the size of 41.68 ± 16.18 mm in length. In the present study, the symmetrical sigmoid curve was the best hypothesis that fit the data; however, it is assumed that the age data are sufficiently informative to describe the growth pattern of C. corteziensis, with either Schnute model Special case 2. Results from morphometry and growth model in this study represent useful tools to analyze growth performance of the Cortez oyster in culture better.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light limitation on the water quality, bacterial counts and performance of Litopenaeus vannamei postlarvae reared with biofloc at low salinity (≈9 g L−1). Two treatments were designed: T1 = culture with natural sunlight and T2 = culture in darkness. After 28 days, in both treatments, the final weight of shrimp was over 0.6 g with a specific growth rate over 7.4% d−1, and a survival rate over 70%. In both treatments, Vibrio sp. concentration presented low values (culture with natural sunlight = 0.1 to 9.9 × 102 CFU mL−1, culture in darkness = 0.4 to 11.7 × 102 CFU mL−1) and Bacillus sp. had high values (culture with natural sunlight = 0.7 to 66.0 × 104 CFU mL−1, culture in darkness = 0.7 to 65.8 × 104 CFU mL−1). All water quality parameters remained within the ranges suitable for shrimp culture, except for alkalinity during the first stage of the study. Although in some sampling periods some significant differences were found in bacterial counts and water quality parameters, shrimp productive performance under culture with biofloc at low salinity was not affected significantly by light limitation.

The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that size variation among individuals of one particular age affects the precise assessment of anticipated growth curve trajectories and their parameters for the marine shrimp, Penaeus vannamei Boone, 1931. The data came from shrimp farmed in earthen ponds of an aquaculture farm located in the Gulf of California. Five asymptotic models were applied to averaged length-at-age data: specialized Von Bertalanffy, generalized Von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, Logistic and Johnson. These models were parametrized considering two criteria: (1) variability in length-at-age () decreases with age (growth compensation approach), (2) constant variance (“normal” and “fat tail”). The model parameters were computed with the maximum likelihood criterion. The corrected version of Akaike’s information criterion AICc, selected the Gompertz model and the growth compensation approach as those who fitted the data best. We conclude that the growth compensation approach allows the application of a very high performance objective function to analyse individual length-at-age variability without underestimation of the parameters, and also that the best model to describe the growth trajectory of P. vannamei in a farmed environment is a sigmoid curve with an inflection point at 34% of the life period analysed (the Gompertz model).

In the present study we explored the effect of the tidal hour on the postlarvae abundance of the penaeid white-leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931)) in three Mexican Pacific coastal lagoons. Correlation analysis of tidal hour against the hourly variation of the abundance of postlarvae was conducted in three regions of the Mexican Pacific; the system lagoon Huizache-Caimanero LHC, the region of the “Grandes Lagunas” SGL and the “Mar Muerto” Lagoon LMM. Two peaks were found in L. vannamei abundance in the three locations, at 04:00 and 16:00 of tidal hour in LHC and SGL, and 06:00 and 12:00 of tidal hour in LMM. Significant correlations between postlarvae and the tidal hour for the three regions were found. The tidal hour standardizes the time of ebb and flow. It is concluded that tidal hour can be used as cue for shrimp postlarvae immigration to nurseries.

"The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of organic (molasses) and inorganic (Nutrilake ® ) fertilization on plankton, water quality, and shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei performance reared in zero-discharge tanks and ponds. The findings showed that in tanks, the organic fertilization induced highest survival and production, and low total ammonia-N concentration; however, this effect was not observed in the ponds. In both tanks and ponds, the inorganic fertilization increased nitrogen levels. The phytoplankton abundance increased in both tanks/ponds with the fertilization treatments. Shrimp production in the tanks and ponds fertilized almost doubled compared with unfertilized treatments."

A vital goal of cleaner production involves developing agricultural production systems capable of ensuring sufficient yields of highly necessary foods to meet the increasing needs of the global population while minimizing the associated economic and ecological costs. Integrated agri-aquaculture systems (IAAS) offer a number of advantages for sustainable agriculture, including water reutilization, discharge mitigation, and increased profitability by leveraging the symbiotic relationship between organic waste, bacterial mineralization, and plant filtration. The aim of this study was to assess the production of two food items of global socio-economic importance cultivated at different salinities: Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) and tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) grafted to salinity tolerant wild tomatoes. Pacific white shrimp were cultured at a density of 125 organisms/m3 and tomatoes at a density of 3 plants/m. The shrimp growth test consisted of three salinity levels: 2, 4, and 6 g/L. The corresponding tomato salinity treatments were conducted using shrimp water effluents; Steiner’s universal nutrient solution (SNS) was used for the control treatment. The experimental period lasted 175 days. The highest tomato production (77.46 t/ha) was attained with SNS, with no significant difference from the salinity of 2 g/L. Shrimp final mean weight, survival, and production were higher at the 6 g/L salinity; and all the other zootechnical parameters decreased with lower salinity. When compared with the hydroponic system using a cost-benefit analysis (CBA), the production costs associated with the IAAS were lower primarily because of the reduced (or null) costs of fertilizer, and irrigation water. When grafted plants were used, the salinity tolerance of the commercial hybrid increased and shrimp could be cultured at appropriate salinity to facilitate osmoregulation. Chemical fertilization requirements were reduced and acceptable yields were obtained for the tomato crop by grafting to salinity-tolerant rootstocks.

El chano norteno Micropogonias megalops es capturado en el Alto Golfo de California (AGC) por comunidades de pescadores locales de San Felipe en Baja California, El Golfo de Santa Clara y Puerto Penasco en Sonora, Mexico. Para la administracion sustentable de la pesqueria, es necesario conocer el crecimiento de la especie. Se calculo el crecimiento individual de M. megalops del AGC usando 4 ecuaciones: la ecuacion de crecimiento de von Bertalanffy (ECVB), Logistico, Gompertz y Schnute. Los parametros de cada modelo y los intervalos de confianza (IC) fueron calculados usando el metodo de maxima verosimilitud. El mejor modelo se selecciono con el criterio de informacion de Akaike (CIA). Segun el CIA, la ECVB es la que mejor describe los datos. Los parametros y sus IC fueron: 1) Longitud asintotica promedio (L∞) en machos 429 mm de longitud total LT (IC 426-432 mm LT) y en hembras 461 mm LT (IC 457-464 mm LT); 2) el coeficiente de crecimiento (k) en machos 0,419 (IC 0,412-0,426) y en hembras 0,377 (IC 0,370-0,384). En conclusion, la ECVB describe adecuadamente el crecimiento individual de M. megalops en el AGC.

"The culture of white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei in low salinity waters (1.2 ± 0.5 g L -1 ) presents challenges, the deviation of the ionic composition of water is known that influences the overall condition of the cu ltured organisms. The effect of water of low salinity with different ion content on the growth and survival of shrimp was determined . First, water was extracted from 4 wells with a depth of 5 to 7 m, located in Sinaloa River Basin in Guasave, Mexico at: (T 1 ) 25.43°N, 108.44°W; (T 2 ) 25.48°N, 108.37°W; (T 3 ) 25.60°N, 108.40°W and (T 4 ) 25.64°N, 108.51°W and were selected on base the different ionic water composition. The experimental design was 4 independent treatments with 3 replicate. Shrimp were grown at sea water (T m = 34 ± 1.4 g L -1 ) used as a control. Shrimps grown in T m and T 1 had averaged weight (over 12 ± 0.61 g) and survival rates (78%), with statistical differences to others low salinity water treatments. The condition factor obtained with low-salinity water (T 1 = 0.654) was like that recorded for T m (0.670), where ionic ratios (Na/K and Mg /K) were similar to that of seawater. This observation stro ngly suggests that the ratios of the major ions (Na + , K + , Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ ) play a relevant role for development of organisms under cultivation. Shrimp cultured in water of low salinity with an ionic ratio similar to that of sea water were organisms wi th the best development under cultivation, therefore indicating that the proportion of major ions were important for shrimp."

To identify ways to improve water quality and shrimp production in closed systems, two parallel experiments (one in tanks and one in ponds) were conducted using Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, cultures. In both experiments, the effects of inorganic (Nutrilake®) and organic (molasses) fertilization on physicochemical parameters, bacterial concentrations, and shrimp performance under zero water exchange were evaluated. Fertilization with both molasses and Nutrilake enhanced the feed conversion rate, as well as shrimp survival and production. In tanks, the shrimp survival and production rates were highest in the molasses treatment, but this effect was not observed in ponds. In ponds, fertilization with Nutrilake increased nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations more than did the controls and molasses treatments toward the end of the experiment. In tanks, fertilization with molasses reduced ammonia concentrations toward the end of the experiment, but the same effect was not observed in ponds. In ponds, fertilization reduced the proportion of Vibrio spp. bacteria, which most likely reduced the incidence of disease from these potentially pathogenic organisms. In both culture systems, fertilization increased the proportion of Bacillus spp., which most likely enhanced food availability.

Shrimp aquaculture in Sinaloa is one of the top economic enterprises, generating many jobs and earns significant incomes every year. Shrimp feed is an essential part of maintaining healthy production. In this initial approach of shrimp growth in low salinity water, were tested two formulas of animal protein composed of 40% (APL1) and 20% (APL2) worm protein, a commercial diet, and no supplementary feed. Physicochemical parameters did not have a direct influence in shrimpbehavior. After six weeks of experimentation, shrimp fed with commercial diet had a weight gain 20% higher than those feed with worm protein. There were no significantly differences between sizes with respect to 40% animal protein and 20% animal protein with the commercial diet (P  0.05). However, shrimp fed worm protein had lower mortality. The use of worm protein could be an option to maintain a high quantity of shrimp reared in low salinity waters.

Shrimp farming with a value annually of US$711 million approximately, is one of the most important primary activities in Mexico. However, shrimp farming has had to face various problems that have limited their development, within which the mortality caused by the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is the most important. To have scientific elements to focus on preventive health management actions is necessary to know, among other factors, aspects of the epidemiologyof white spot disease (WSD). Therefore this study focused on delimiting the endemic region for WSD and its temporal regimes of infection and discusses possible risk factors related to outbreaks of the disease in shrimp farms of northwestern Mexico. We analyzed information from the databases of the State Committees of Aquaculture Health of Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit, as well as data of Integrated Program on Shrimp Aquaculture Health (PISA 2007-2008) and the Strategic Alliance Network Aquaculture Industry Innovation (AERI-2008). Data analysis showed that, for the shrimp production cycles of 2007-2008, white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) was endemic to the region of Tuxpan, Nayarit in the south and to Agiabampo, Sonora in the north. Spring outbreaks of WSD in the fishfarms had a spatiotemporal distribution, indicating three infections regimes: (1) March-April in the southern shrimpfarming region (Local Aquaculture Health Boards [LAHBs] of Mazatlan, El Rosario, Escuinapa, Tecuala, and Tuxpan); 2) April-May in the central region (LAHBs of Navolato Norte, Navolato Sur, and El dorado); and (3) May-June in the northern region (LAHBs of Agiabampo-Sonora, Ahome, Guasave Norte and Sur). The WSD were consistent between 2007 and 2008, with slight variations among some LAHBs, with respect to the onset or presence of spring WSD outbreaks. It shows the association of infection regimes throughout the region endemic with the location of Mazatlan,Pescadero and Farallon oceanographic basins according to the increasing differential temperature within them, which may be a determinant factor for the presence of WSD outbreaks.

The reproductive period of the whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) was analysed to determine its relationship to sea surface temperature (SST) in two zones of the Mexican Pacific coast. Mature females from fishing areas in the north (Mazatlan, 23°N 106°W) and south (Gulf of Tehuantepec, 15°N 95°W) and monthly SST values in a 1° geographic rectangular area were examined. Average SST for 1983-2005 increased from Mazatlan (26.2 ± 0.2°C) to Tehuantepec (28.3 ± 0.5°C). Seasonal variation in SST between the coldest and warmest months was 7.8°C in Mazatlan and 3.3°C in Tehuantepec. The reproductive period near Mazatlan is seven months, and it is year-round in Tehuantepec. This study suggests that warm water and low seasonal variability facilitate the reproduction of the white shrimp over a longer period.

The effects of four different ionic composition low salinity water (T1, T2, T3, and T4), on growth and survival of Litopenaeus vannamei marine shrimp juveniles were investigated. Shrimp culture in seawater (Tm) was used as control treatment. The results indicated that there were no significant difference (P < 0.05) in growth, survival, production, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of L. vannamei juveniles reared in the different treatments, but significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed between each of them when compared with seawater (Tm). After 84 days, culture shrimp grew from 0.02 to 7.58 g in T1. The lowest growth rate was attained in T3 (0.57 g/week), in which potassium and calcium ions concentrations were the lowest (0.58 and 28.00 mg/L, respectively). The recorded survival rate (76.35% to 79.55%) is considered well for the 84 days growout period, although it was 7.6% lower than that recorded in the control treatment. Although there were no significant differences (P < 0.05) in growth with respect to the ionic composition of the four treatments, there was a trend of increasing growth in relation with the ionic ratio found in the seawater (Tm). This aspect should be evaluated more closely in future research.

This study describes the relationships of the body length and the population density of the yellowleg shrimp, Farfantepenaeus californiensis (Holmes, 1900) with differences in depth, in two coastal lagoons and on the adjacent continental shelf of the Gulf of California. The Agiabampo and Navachiste lagoon systems are located on the east side of the Gulf of California, bordering the states of Sonora and Sinaloa, Mexico. The environmental conditions of the lagoons are stable, with salinities of 35.5 to 38 psu over an annual cycle. Before sampling, the bathymetry of the lagoons was studied. From December 2001 to January 2003, sampling of shrimp was performed monthly for five consecutive days. The preference of shrimp for a particular depth, according to their size, was examined and the density of shrimp at selected depths was compared. Large differences in body size between the samples at selected depths were found. The density of the shrimp did not correspond with depth, but small shrimp showed greater mean densities. The cues used by species for offshore movement may largely be size-related. Juveniles moved down the estuary and out to sea as they grew. Depth may be involved in the migration of shrimp from lagoons with stable salinity gradients. Migration requires that the shrimp respond to some cue associated with size or to some change in their environment. The conclusion in this study is, that the yellowleg shrimp, F. californiensis responds to differences in depth, depending on its size, which is independent of whether it is inside the lagoon or in an open marine habitat.

To fully understand the reproductive habitat of brown shrimp, Farfantepenaeus californiensis, this study analyzed reproductive dynamics of the stock in a semiarid coastal region of the Gulf of California. Monthly biological samplings were conducted simultaneously in a coastal lagoon and in adjacent marine waters from January through December 2002, during 5-d periods centered on full moon (full moon ±2 d). An Egg Production Index EPI was used to determine the reproductive period. The main reproductive period was from April to August in coastal waters and June to July inside the lagoon. The EPI was 10 times greater in coastal waters than inside the lagoon. We conclude that, contrary to what is generally believed, brown shrimp can mature and possibly reproduce inside the coastal lagoon, although the most important spawning habitat is coastal waters.

Using the percentage of mature females as an index, the reproductive period of the brown shrimp, Farfantepenaeus californiensis, off the coast of Sonora in Mexico, has been shown to occur throughout the year with two peaks of mass spawning. The objective of this study is to determine if a similar reproductive period occurred off Agiabampo, at the Sonora-Sinaloa border. By combining 3 indices of mature females: size structure, abundance and fecundity at size, a single egg production index (EPI) was calculated. Monthly samples from January through December 2002 were collected during 5 continuous days around the full moon (full moon ±2d ays). Trawl net tows were used at depths from 1-9 m, 2k m north and south of the mouth of ac oastal lagoon. Using the EPI, a single reproductive peak, May to August, was found, with May as the most important egg production month. On the other hand, the percentage of mature females showed a two peak reproductive period, one more intensive from May to August and the second one less intensive in November. We concluded that the best determination of the reproductive period of the brown shrimp required the use of three indices. Particularly off Agiabampo, this species has a well-defined reproductive period with just one massive spawning peak.

The length of females ranged from 90 to 150 mm, greater lengths were more common offshore during April and July. In the lagoon, smaller specimens prevailed all year. There were no significant differences between lagoon and offshore in mean length to within 1% of probability. The dynamics of penaeid shrimp in semi-arid climate lagoons differ from the pattern found in more semi-tropical parts of the Mexican Pacific, where lagoons do not have permanent communication with the Gulf of California. Evidence suggests that this species can complete its life cycle in the lagoon system or on the continental shelf. Este estudio analizo el crecimiento y reclutamiento de la poblacion de camaron cafe del Pacifico Farfantepenaeus californiensis (Holmes, 1900) en lagunas costeras y en la plataforma continental de una region subtropical semiarida en el Golfo de California, Mexico. Se realizaron muestreos biologicos mensuales de las poblaciones de camarones en laguna y plataforma, de diciembre del 2001 a noviembre del 2003. La longitud total de las hembras se encontro en el intervalo de 90 a 150 mm, las tallas mas grandes se capturaron en la plataforma en los meses de abril y julio. En la laguna, camarones mas pequenos prevalecieron a lo largo del ano. La comparacion estadistica de la longitud media entre laguna y plataforma mostro que no existen diferencias significativas al 1% de probabilidad. La dinamica de las poblaciones de camarones Peneidos en lagunas de clima semiarido difiere del patron encontrado en zonas con clima mas semitropical del Pacifico mexicano, donde las lagunas no tienen comunicacion permanente con el Golfo de California. La longitud total de las hembras se encontro en el intervalo de 90 a 150 mm, las tallas mas grandes se capturaron en la plataforma en los meses de abril y julio. En la laguna, camarones mas pequenos prevalecieron a lo largo del ano. La comparacion estadistica de la longitud media entre laguna y plataforma mostro que no existen diferencias significativas al 1% de probabilidad. La dinamica de las poblaciones de camarones Peneidos en lagunas de clima semiarido difiere del patron encontrado en zonas con clima mas semitropical del Pacifico mexicano, donde las lagunas no tienen comunicacion permanente con el Golfo de California. We evaluated the interannual variation in the growth of brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus californiensis and the relation of this variation with sea surface temperature in the Gulf of California, Mexico. We used daily samplings of commercial captures at the packing plant at Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico from 1978 to 1994, samplings of commercial captures on board trawlers of the commercial fleet that operated along the coast of Sonora during the fishing seasons 1989–1995, and the monthly average of the sea surface temperature recorded by the oceanographic station of the Institute of Geophysics of the National University of Mexico, in Guaymas, Sonora from 1978 to 1995. "In shrimp farming, one of the most important challenges is to increase shrimp production, which has encouraged increased seeding rates. In this study, the response of metabolites in hemolymph and performance of white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) grown at high densities was evaluated, using total protein, lactate and glucose concentrations as stress indicators. At the beginning of the bioassay, lactate was high, while growth and specific survival were poorer, which is inferred as a response to seeding- time stress. At the end of the bioassay was obtained statistical difference in total protein levels, with an increase of final weight and survival."

Los excesos de agroquímicos disminuyen la productividad de los suelos agrícolas, mientras que los fertilizantes de origen orgánico mejoran sus propiedades físico-químicas. La vermicomposta es una alternativa viable para mejorar la estructura y cantidad de nutrientes del suelo, por lo cual el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar distintas dosis de vermicomposta en el cultivo de tomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.) del norte de Sinaloa. Se probaron: 0, 500, 1 000, 1 600, 2 000 y 4 000 kg ha-1 de vermicomposta y un testigo, en un diseño completamente al azar con tres repeticiones por tratamiento. Las variables estimadas fueron, tamaño, número y peso de fruto. El tomate abonado con más de 4 000 kg ha-1 de vermicomposta incrementó significativamente el número y tamaño del fruto en la planta, de ahí que se considera una opción viable para su utilización en cultivos comerciales de tomates.

El cultivo del camarón en el estado de Sinaloa es una de las principales actividades en la región, ya que genera una gran cantidad de empleos como de divisas cada año. La alimentación del camarón es una parte esencial para tener una producción sana. Como un acercamiento inicial al crecimiento del camarón en agua de baja salinidad se probaron dos fórmulas a base de proteína animal en el alimento del camarón, con un 40% (APL1) y 20% (APL2) de proteína de lombriz, un alimento comercial y otro sin alimento suplementario. Los parámetros físico-químicos del agua no tuvieron una influencia directa en el comportamiento del camarón. Después de seis semanas de experimento, los camarones alimentados con el alimento comercial tuvieron un aumento en peso 20% más alta que aquellos alimentadas con la proteína de lombriz. No hubo diferencias significativas entre tallas entre el alimento con 40% proteína y 20% proteína con respecto al alimento comercial (P ≥ 0.05). Sin embargo, los camarones alimentados con proteína de lombriz tuvieron una mortandad menor. El uso de la proteína de lombriz es una opción para mantener densidades altas de camarón cultivados en agua de baja salinidad.

El cultivo de camarón, con un valor aproximado de 711 millones de dólares anuales, es una de las actividades primarias más importantes en México. Sin embargo, ha tenido que enfrentar diversos problemas que han limitado su desarrollo, dentro de los cuales la mortalidad causada por el virus del síndrome de la mancha blanca (WSSV) es el más importante. Para contar con elementos científicos enfocados a acciones de manejo sanitario preventivo, es preciso conocer, entre otros elementos, aspectos de la epidemiología de la enfermedad de la mancha blanca (WSD). Por esta razón el presente trabajo se enfocó a delimitar la región endémica de la WSD, sus regímenes temporales de infección y la discusión sobre los posibles factores de riesgo que pueden estar relacionados con sus brotes en las granjas camaronícolas del noroeste de México. Se utilizó información de las bases de datos de los Comités Estatales de Sanidad Acuícola de Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa y Nayarit; así como del Programa Integral de Sanidad Acuícola en Camarón (PISA 2007-2008) y de la Alianza Estratégica y Red de Innovación de la Industria Acuícola (AERI-2008). El análisis de la información mostró, para los ciclos de producción de camarón 2007-2008, una región endémica con presencia del virus WSSV, ubicada entre la región de Tuxpan, Nayarit al sur y de Agiabampo, Sonora, al norte. Los brotes de primavera de la WSD en las granjas acuícolas tuvieron un desplazamiento espacio-temporal, indicando tres regímenes de infección: (1) marzo-abril en la región sur del área de cultivo (Juntas Locales de Sanidad Acuícola [JLSA] de Mazatlán, El Rosario, Escuinapa, Tecuala y Tuxpan); (2) abril-mayo al centro (JLSA de Navolato Norte y Sur y El dorado); (3) mayo-junio en la parte norte (JLSA de Agiabampo-Sonora, Ahome, Guasave Norte y Sur). Los registros de la WSD fueron consistentes entre el 2007 y el 2008, con ligeras variaciones en algunas JLSA respecto al inicio o presencia de los brotes en primavera. Se muestra la asociación de los regímenes de infección a lo largo de la región endémica con la ubicación de las cuencas oceanográficas de Mazatlán, Pescadero y Farallón, en función del incremento diferencial de la temperatura dentro de ellas, la cual puede ser un factor condicionante para la presencia de brotes de la WSD

Se analizó el efecto combinado de diferentes temperaturas (20, 25 y 30°C) y salinidades (15, 25, 35 y 45 ups) sobre el consumo específico de oxígeno (CEO) en Litopenaeus vannamei. Se midió el CEO en 248 organismos de distintas tamaños corporales (0,31 a 15,85 g). El CEO disminuyó con el aumento de peso corporal de los organismos en todos los tratamientos, sin observarse un patrón general definido de aumento del CEO conforme se incrementó la salinidad. Aunque no hubo diferencias estadísticas significativas en todas la combinaciones de temperatura-salinidad entre las pendientes de regresión que relacionan el CEO con el peso de los organismos, los valores de pendientes en particular sugieren que en 20°C se da un mayor gasto energético en la menor salinidad (15 ups) y en 25°C en la salinidad más alta (45 ups). Mientras que en 30°C, el menor gasto energético se presentó en la menor salinidad (15 ups). Lo cual puede indicar que la condición isosmótica (punto de menor gasto energético) tiende a modificarse con la temperatura, favoreciendo con ello que los camarones se puedan cultivar en alta temperatura (30°C) y baja salinidad (15 ups) sin que se presente un mayor gasto energético.

"Marine protected areas (MPAs) are increasingly being used as management tools to protect ecosystems around the world, but there is some debate as to whether marine protected areas should be used as a tool to protect and increase biodiversity, as a fisheries management tool or as a tool that serves both purposes. Scientific studies help to demonstrate the effects of these areas on adjacent fishing grounds. The Upper Gulf of California (UGC) is one of the most important fishing regions exploited by artisanal fishermen. There are three neighboring communities in the area: San Felipe in Baja California and Golfo de Santa Clara and Puerto Peñasco in Sonora. These areas are adjacent to two MPAs. We assessed whether the MPAs in the area have promoted the welfare of the fisherman, and we tried to identify the important grounds for artisanal fishing in an effort to improve the designation of MPAs. Capture increased as fishermen incorporated more boats into their fleets, but the total capture per unit, which is about 10 ton boat-1 year-1, decreased. A Geographical Information System survey indicated that 62% of all artisanal fishing was occurring within the MPAs of the UGC. This fishing generated gross profits of approximately US$ 5,897 million per year, with return rates of 68%. Even with an increased fishing effort, gross profit margins have been sustained. The fishermen's exploitation of the MPAs needs to undergo a complex interdisciplinary evaluation because of the presence of endangered species in the region. Appropriate management practices are needed to enhance marine conservation efforts without compromising the interests of local fishermen."

La pesquería de camarón de altamar del Pacífico mexicano se sustenta, principalmente, en la explotación de cuatro especies de camarones peneidos denominados comúnmente como café (Penaeus californiensis), azul (P. stylirostris), blanco (P. vannamei) y rojo o cristal (P. brevirostris), Se analizaron las variaciones en las capturas de camarón; espaciales (latitudinal y por profundidades), temporales y específicas. Se utilizó el índice de CPUE (kg/h) como una medida del rendimiento de las capturas. Se encontró un patrón general para todas las temporadas, donde los valores más altos de CPUE se obtienen durante los dos primeros meses de cada temporada (1989-1995). Cuando se analizó el rendimiento por especies, los valores de CPUE siguieron este mismo patrón. Con respecto a la profundidad, los índices variaron según la especies, donde el camarón azul es capturado a profundidades someras, el blanco y café a mayores profundidades, y el rojo a grandes profundidades (mayores a 45 m). El modelo lineal generalizado fue usado para obtener la estandarización del poder de pesca y explicar los factores que contribuyen a la variación en las capturas de camarón. Este es el procedimiento más común usado en situaciones donde puedan faltar los datos en algunos estratos o el número de observaciones es diferente en los niveles de los factores. La contribución de cada variable a la CPUE total para cada temporada se estimó tomando como referencia la CPUE de la temporada 1989-90. Se encontró que para las temporadas 1992-93 y 1993-94 la razón de captura fue un 66 y 63 por ciento más alto que la temporada 1989- 90, respectivamente. The vaquita (Phocoena sinus) is considered the world’s most endangered marine mammal. It is the smallest member of the porpoise family endemic to the upper part of the Gulf of California. The current population is estimated at less than 30 individuals. The primary reasons for the species decline includes limited habitat and incidental mortalities associated with illegal gillnet fishing activities. Since 2008, the Mexican government has taken environmental and economic actions to protect the vaquita’s focusing in reducing by-catch deaths to zero. In 2015, a federal Agreement decreed by the Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentación (SAGARPA in Spanish) prohibited the use of any fishing gillnets for two years, affecting severely the local human communities because in the region the coastal fisheries represent 40% of the regional PIB, besides that 50% of the local inhabitants are devoted to this activity. Recently, an economical compensation is giving to the fishing permits owners if they do not continue with their fishing activities. However none of this actions and agreements have considered social and economic solutions for the local inhabitants of this region, which includes three communities: San Felipe, Golfo de Santa Clara and Puerto Peñasco. If there is not enacted a change of paradigm of the conservation programs, focusing in the wellbeing of the local fishing communities then the vaquita could be the second marine mammal species to disappear due to human activities.

Una de las alternativas para la producción de alimentos agroacuícolas, es la acuaponia, la cual mediante la recirculación de efluentes entre sistemas acuícolas e hidropónicos genera cultivos sustentables y eficientes, puesto que disminuye la producción de efluentes contaminantes al hacer un uso biorracional de los recursos básicos que se utilizan en las técnicas agrícolas y acuícolas tradicionales. En este estudio se evaluó el rendimiento de dos materiales de tomate: Saladette (Solanum lycopersicum Mill) y cherry (Solanum lycopersicum. var. cerasiforme) y la producción de tilapia nilótica (Oreochromis niloticus) en un cultivo acuapónico a partir del manejo de diferentes concentraciones de nitratos en los efluentes del sistema, con el objetivo de encontrar una concentración que proporcionara las mejores condiciones de supervivencia y desarrollo saludable de ambas especies. En el cultivo acuícola se evaluaron 4 tratamientos; TI (35 mg L-1 de NO3-), TII (50 mg L-1 de NO3-), TIII (75 mg L-1 de NO3-) y TIV (100 mg L-1 de NO3-), con una densidad de cultivo de 45 peces por m3. Adicionalmente se realizó un estudio para determinar la metahemoglobina en la sangre de las tilapias en concentraciones más elevadas de nitratos, las cuales consistieron en; TI (35 mg L-1 de NO3-), TII (100 mg L-1 de NO3-), TIII (500 mg L-1 de NO3-) y TIV (1000 mg L-1 de NO3-), con una densidad de cultivo de 8 peces por m3. En ambos estudios se evaluó la tasa de crecimiento específico (TCE), factor de conversión alimenticia (FCA) y supervivencia. En el cultivo agrícola se evaluaron 6 tratamientos; TI (Saladette de 744 a 350 mg L-1 de NO3-), TII (Cherry de 744 a 350 mg L-1 de NO3-), TIII (Saladette de 744 a 150 mg L-1 de NO3-), TIV (Cherry de 744 a 150 mg L-1 de NO3-), TV (Saladette a 744 mg L-1 de NO3-) y TVI (Cherry a 744 mg L-1 de NO3-). Se cultivaron 3.6 plantas m-1, y se evaluaron variables fisiológicas (peso del fruto, altura y grosor de tallo) y rendimiento total. Se evaluaron variables fisicoquímicas y calidad del agua en los efluentes de todo el sistema acuapónico como temperatura, oxígeno disuelto, pH, conductividad eléctrica, nitratos y composición iónica. Los resultados obtenidos fueron analizados en los paquetes estadísticos SAS 9.0 y Minitab 17 (P = 0.05). No se presentó diferencia significativa entre los tratamientos en ninguna de las variables del cultivo acuícola (P>0.05). Durante el estudio acuapónico, en el cultivo acuícola, la tasa de crecimiento específico más elevada se presentó en el TI (35 mg L-1 de NO3-) con un valor de 0.7 g día-1. El factor de conversión alimenticia fue igual en todos los tratamientos (1.2). Por último, se obtuvo una supervivencia de 100 % en los tratamientos TI (35 mg L-1 de NO3-) y TII (50 mg L-1 de NO3-). En el estudio para la determinación de metahemoglobina las variables anteriores se comportaron de la siguiente manera: los mejores valores de la tasa de crecimiento específico y del factor de conversión alimenticia se obtuvieron en el TI (35 mg L-1 de NO3) con los valores de 0.7 (g día-1) y 1.2 respectivamente. Por último, los mejores porcentajes de supervivencia se obtuvieron en los TI (35 mg L-1 de NO3-) y TII (50 mg L-1 de NO3-) con valores del 100% en ambos casos. En el mismo estudio el mayor porcentaje de metahemoglobina (3.33%) se observó en el tratamiento con mayor concentración de nitratos TIV:1000 mg L-1 de NO3-. Los parámetros fisicoquímicos y composición iónica registraron valores dentro de los límites apropiados para el cultivo de O. niloticus. En rendimiento de tomate se observaron diferencias significativas en ambos efectos principales. En el cultivo agrícola la mejor producción en materiales de tomate se presentó en saladette con un valor de 65.53 t ha-1, y en niveles de recambio de nitratos se obtuvo en el nivel de 744 a 350 mg L-1 de NO3 con un rendimiento de 57.73 t ha-1. El tomate de frutos más pequeños (Cherry) tiene un comportamiento similar al tomate de frutos más grandes (saladette) respecto a la demanda de nitratos mientras que la tilapia es una especie apta para los cultivos de recirculación acuícola intensivos que manejen concentraciones menores a 500 mg L-1 de NO3-.

Los sistemas integrados de recirculación para la producción acuícola se han desarrollado debido a la necesidad que se tiene por evitar la contaminación del agua y, para prevenir la entrada de patógenos que puedan desarrollar un brote epidémico. La producción de flóculos en suspensión (biofloc) en sistemas de cultivo, donde la manipulación de la comunidad microbiana se lleva a cabo bajo el control de la relación C:N, puede ser uno de los factores que posibiliten una optimización de la producción en sistemas de recirculación. Con sistemas de biofloc es posible reducir la alimentación o aminorar la adición de proteína en el alimento, debido a que este puede complementar los requerimientos de los organismos bajo cultivo. En este trabajo se evaluó la condición fisiológica, nutricional y crecimiento del camarón blanco cultivado en sistema de producción sin recambio de agua y aprovechamiento de los desechos de producción para generar biomasa bacteriana en forma de flóculos utilizando diferente proteína en la alimentación (Purina ® Camaronina 35% y 25% de proteína). El diseño experimental para el cultivo conto con 2 tratamientos heterótrofos (H35% y H25%) y 2 autótrofos (A35%, A25%), con tres repeticiones. Se determinó la concentración de nitrito (NO2-), nitrato (NO3-) y amonio (NH4+). Un total de 480 organismos se cultivaron. La concentración media (±EE) de oxígeno disuelto fue 7.16 ± 0.14 mg L-1. La temperatura media global fue de 29.95 ± 0.29 ° C. La concentración inicial de nitrito (N02-) y nitrato fue 0.368 ± 0.066 mg L-1 y 0.041 ± 0.015 mg L-1, respectivamente. La concentración total de bacterias alcanzó valores hasta de 100.000 UFC mL-1 en los tratamientos heterótrofos. Los microorganismos en los flóculos en suspensión (fitoplancton, zooplancton y bacterias) fueron dominantes en los tratamientos heterótrofos. El cultivo heterótrofo fue superior en la captación de componentes nitrogenados, en el desempeño y en la condición fisiológica (factor de condición) del camarón superando al cultivo autótrofo.

Se estudió la densidad y abundancia poblacional de Chione californiensis (Broderip, 1835) en Bahía Altata (Navolato, Sinaloa, México), durante el período enero del 2010 a enero del 2011. El periodo de estudio se caracterizó por una amplia variación en temperatura del agua, fluctuando de 21 °C a 35°C (en invierno y en verano), y una productividad primaria relativamente alta. Las variables poblaciones de densidad que se presentaron en el banco La Barrita (LB) fueron de 30.63±3.95 ind/m2 , La Islita (LI) 9.38±0.63 ind/m2 y el banco La Palmita (LP) de 28.84±2.17 ind/m2 . También se observó una tendencia descendente de estos valores de abundancia obtenidos debidos a la explotación del recurso en el sistema lagunar. El intervalo de tallas del banco LB fue de 26 a 36 mm, LI de 38 a 60 mm y LP de 44 a 50 mm, este último fue en más grande en el ciclo anual. La distribución de tallas fue unimodal para el banco de LB y bimodal para LI y LP, con la incorporación de juveniles (tallas pequeñas) a la población en 24 mm de longitud total en los tres bancos. La relaciones longitud-peso fueron de tipo potencial y con alometria positiva (>3.0). El análisis de la tasa de crecimiento (mm/mes) para LB fue de 0.89 mm/mes, en LI fue de 1.63 mm/mes y en LP fue de 2.23 mm/mes. Los análisis de la dinámica poblacional mostraron una tasa de crecimiento relativamente alta con un K de 0.34 año-1 y una L∞ de 71.44 mm. Las tasas de mortalidad natural y por pesca de Z equivalente a 0.38 año-1 equivalente entre el 50 al 60% de explotación, evidenciando que es una especie levemente explotada. Respecto al índice de condición fisiológico en el banco de LB fue diferente a los bancos LI y LP, presentando en los últimos los mayores porcentajes entre 25 y 30% de la relación tejido seco. EL tipo de grano el análisis no mostró diferencias en los tres bancos con un tipo de grano fino de 125 µm. Sin embargo, la cantidad de materia orgánica fue mayor en LI de 0.29 a 1.42%, mientras que en LP fue de 0.23 a 1.33% y LB presentó el menor porcentaje de materia orgánica con 0.25 a 0.67%. La longitud media (Lm) de la talla de primera madurez fue de 32.7 mm. Se encontró que el banco La Palmita es el único que se puede explotar todo el año comparado con los bancos La Barrita y La Islita. El tipo de sedimento no infiere de manera directa en la distribución de la almeja comparada con la materia orgánica que es fundamental para obtener tallas más grandes. Este estudio brinda un conocimiento biológico y pesquero importante para el desarrollo de un plan de manejo pesquero de largo plazo y sustentable.

El caracol burro negro o chino Hexaplex (Muricanthus) nigritus (Philipi, 1845), es una de las especies del género Hexaplex que más se captura en el Golfo de California. Los gasterópodos Murícidos carecen de dimorfismo sexual, su reproducción se efectúa entre los meses abril a octubre, que es la época en la que se presentan las mayores temperaturas del año. Este gasterópodo desarrolla un cigoto denominado larva trocófora y eclosiona como larva velígera, posteriormente ocurre la fijación y la metamorfosis, este trabajo se realizó debido a que actualmente es escasa la información con relación a aspectos básicos de la biología de esta especie. El objetivo general del presente estudio fue determinar el desarrollo embrionario hasta la fase de metamorfosis del caracol chino H. nigritus, a nivel de laboratorio. Para realizar el presente estudio, primeramente se desinfectó el material de plástico y de vidrio, se colectaron los organismos progenitores, se colocaron en acuarios donde fueron alimentados, se esperó a que la hembra ovopositara para obtener masas ovígeras, estas fueron lavadas. Posteriormente, con el fin de determinar el desarrollo embrionario en cada una de sus etapas, las masas ovígeras se depositaron en acuarios de 3 L a diferentes temperaturas (30, 32 y 34°C), manejando tres réplicas por tratamiento. En cada réplica se registraron los parámetros físico-químicos diariamente. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron 216 masas ovígeras, con 24, 537 cápsulas y un promedio de 1,609 larvas por cápsula. Se describieron las etapas morfológicas del desarrollo embrionario tales como: huevo fertilizado (longitud: 192 ± 15.51 μm), macrómeros y micrómeros en división, inicio del movimiento de la larva trocófora temprana, gástrula, larva véliger temprana con concha, larva preveliger y véliger eclosionando (longitud: 334.5 ± 19.92 μm). El tiempo de eclosión fue de 10 días para el tratamiento de 32°C y 11 días para el de 30°C. Mientras que el tratamiento a 34°C en el día 7 las cápsulas tomaron un color purpuráceo (muertos). Durante el desarrollo larval se observó la aparición de estructuras tales como el pie, el opérculo, con una longitud larval de 367.75 ± 11.27 μm; así como la formación del canal sifonal, la aparición del corazón larval, el desarrollo de la primera boluta por efecto del proceso de torsión de la concha y finalmente el velum bilobulado, junto con el asentamiento de la larva (longitud final: 617.5 ± 6.45 μm). Se obtuvo un porcentaje de asentamiento larval del 40 al 65 % para los tratamientos de 32 y 30 °C, respectivamente. Palabras clave: H. nigritus, cápsulas, larvas.

La búsqueda de especies nativas de bivalvos con potencial para la acuicultura constituye un reto a nivel mundial, una de las especies alternativas de cultivo es la ostra de placer Crassostrea corteziensis (Hertlein 1951), la cual tiene un alto potencial acuícola para el Pacífico tropical de México y Centroamérica, razón por la cual es importante establecer la densidad de siembra para optimizar los cultivos, permitiendo un mejor manejo y control en el crecimiento del organismo hasta su talla comercial. Se realizó un cultivo experimental en el estero La Pitahaya, Guasave, Sinaloa, la siembra se realizó en el mes de enero de 2010, a partir de semillas producidas en laboratorio. Se avaluaron densidades de 14, 28 y 42 organismos por canasta ostrícola, tomando como indicadores el crecimiento en altura, supervivencia de los organismos, el índice de condición fisiológica y su relación con la disponibilidad de alimento y los factores físico-químicos del agua. En el sitio de cultivo la temperatura del mar presentó una variación estacional con valores mínimos en invierno y máximos en verano, (18.5 a 32.5 °C), salinidad de 25 a 39.5 mg L-1 , concentraciones de oxigeno disuelto de 5.3 a 8.63 mg L-1 . El cultivo tuvo una duración de trece meses, para la densidad de 14 organismos por canasta Nestier se obtuvieron ostiones de 77.38 ± 1.08 mm (media y error estándar), la de 28 una talla de 85.55 ± 1.29 mm y la de 42 fue de 82.10 ± 1.41 mm, el crecimiento de los organismos cultivados en la densidad de 14 por canasta fue significativamente menor (P

La camaronicultura es una de las industrias de mayor crecimiento tanto a nivel mundial como nacional, pero en la última década el desarrollo de ésta se ha visto limitado por la aparición de enfermedades infecciosas provocadas principalmente por virus. Existen condiciones físico-químicas y biológicas dentro de los sistemas de cultivo que pueden provocar estrés y aumentar la susceptibilidad de los camarones a enfermedades infecciosas. Dentro de las variables físico-químicas, la salinidad es una de las más importantes, ya que además de influir en las tasas de crecimiento y supervivencia de los camarones, cambios bruscos pueden ser condicionantes de estrés. Por lo cual, se requiere ampliar el conocimiento del efecto de la salinidad sobre la fisiología del organismo a través del estudio de algunas variables bioquímicas (glucosa y proteína), inmunológicas (conteo total de hemocitos, proFenoloxidasa y Fenoloxidasa), fisiológicas (índice de condición K de Fulton y índice hepatopancreático) y productivas (tasa de crecimiento y supervivencia) del camarón Litopenaeus vannamei. Durante 63 días se cultivó experimentalmente el camarón en diferentes concentraciones de salinidad (1, 10, 15, 25, 35 gL-1 ). En cada salinidad se manejaron tres réplicas y en cada réplica se sembraron 15 camarones con un peso promedio de 3.5-4.5 g. Para evaluar el comportamiento de las variables mencionadas, se tomaron muestras de hemolinfa al inicio (día 1), mediados (día 30) y al finalizar el experimento (día 63). En los resultados obtenidos no se observaron diferencias significativas en las variables bioquímicas, inmunológicas, fisiológicas y productivas entre los tratamientos de salinidad. Aunque, cuando se analizó entre tiempos de muestreo si se presentó un efecto negativo en la glucosa, ya que se incrementó al finalizar el experimento. De igual manera, se observó un efecto negativo en el conteo total de hemocitos, debido a que éstos tendieron a disminuir conforme se desarrollo el experimento.
