This study examined the potential health risks posed by the operation of 96 waste-to-energy (WtE) plants in 30 cities in the Bohai Rim of China. Utilizing a sophisticated simulation approach, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with the California Puff (CALPUFF) model, we obtained the spatial distribution of pollutants emitted by WtE plants in the atmosphere. Hazard indices (HI) and cancer risks (CR) were calculated for each plant using the United States Environmental Protection Agency's recommended methodologies. The results indicated that both HIs and CRs were generally low, with values below the accepted threshold of 1.0 and 1.0 × 10−6, respectively. Specifically, the average HI and CR values for the entire study area were 2.95 × 10−3 and 3.43 × 10−7, respectively. However, some variability in these values was observed depending on the location and type of WtE plant. A thorough analysis of various parameters, such as waste composition, moisture content, and operating conditions, was conducted to identify the factors that influence the health risks associated with incineration. The findings suggest that proper waste sorting and categorization, increased cost of construction, and elevated height of chimneys are effective strategies for reducing the health risks associated with incineration. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the potential health risks associated with WtE plants in the Bohai Rim region of China. The findings can serve as useful guidelines for law enforcement wings and industry professionals seeking to minimize the risks associated with municipal solid waste (MSW) management and promote sustainable development.

Item response theory (IRT) is a modern psychometric framework for estimating respondents’ latent traits (e.g., ability, attitude, and personality) based on their responses to a set of questions in psychological tests. The current study adopted an item response tree (IRTree) method, which combines the tree model with IRT models for handling the sequential process of responding to a test item, to score individual moral inclination for the CNI test—a broadly adopted model for examining humans’ moral decision-making with three parameters generated: sensitivity to moral norms, sensitivity to consequences, and inaction preference. Compared to previous models for the CNI test, the resulting EIRTree-CNI Model is able to generate individual scores without increasing the number of items (thus, less subject fatigue or compromised response quality) or employing a post hoc approach that is deemed statistically suboptimal. The model fits the data well, and the subsequent test also supported the concurrent validity and the predictive validity of the model. Limitations are discussed further.

Abstract Determining the distribution and dynamics of water on land at any given moment poses a significant challenge due to the constraints of observation. Consequently, as advancements in land surface models (LSMs) have been made, numerical simulation has emerged as an increasingly accurate and effective method for hydrological research. Nonetheless, systems that represent multiple land surface parameters in a near‐real‐time manner are scarce. In this study, we present an innovative land surface and river simulation system, termed Today's Earth (TE), which generates state and flux values for the near‐surface environment with multiple outputs in near‐real‐time. There are currently three versions of TE, distinguished by the forcing data utilized: JRA‐55 version, employing the Japanese 55‐year Reanalysis (JRA‐55, from 1958 to the present); GSMaP version, utilizing, the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP, from 2001 to the present), and MODIS version, utilizing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS, from 2003 to the present). These long‐term forcing data set allow for outputs of the JRA‐55 version from 1958, the GSMaP version from 2001, and the MODIS version from 2003. Aiming to provide water and energy values on a global scale in real‐time, the TE system utilizes the LSM Minimal Advanced Treatments of Surface Interaction and Runoff (MATSIRO) (Takata et al., 2003, https://doi.org/10.1016/s0921‐8181(03)00030‐4; Yamazaki et al., 2011, https://doi.org/10.1029/2010wr009726) at a horizontal resolution of 0.5°, along with the river routing model CaMa‐Flood (Yamazaki et al., 2011, https://doi.org/10.1029/2010wr009726) at a horizontal resolution of 0.25°. Both land surface and river products are available in 3‐hourly, daily, and monthly intervals across all three versions. A notable feature of TE is its ability to release both state and flux parameters in near‐real‐time, offering convenience for various aspects of hydrological research. In addition to presenting the general features of TE‐Global, this study examines the performance of snow depth, soil moisture, and river discharge data in daily intervals from 2003 to 2021, with validation spanning 2003 to 2016. When comparing snow depth results, the correlation coefficient ranged between 0.644 and 0.658, while for soil moisture it ranged between 0.471 and 0.494. These findings suggest that the LSM yields comparable results when utilizing JRA‐55, MODIS, or GSMaP. Interestingly, river output from the three products exhibited distinct characteristics varying from GSMaP to JRA‐55 and MODIS. For river discharge, the correlation coefficient ranged from 0.494 to 0.519, the root mean square error ranged from 3,730 m3/s to 6,330 m3/s, and the mean absolute error ranged from 3,000 m3/s to 5,160 m3/s among the different forcing versions. The overall bias in river discharge from GSMaP was 1,570 m3/s, in contrast to −589 m3/s for JRA‐55 and −200 m3/s for MODIS. These metrics demonstrate that the TE system is capable of generating practical land surface and river products, highlighting differences arising from the use of various types of forcing data. This comprehensive system would be valuable for monitoring water‐related movements, predicting disasters, and contributing to sophisticated water resource management. Regarding its application, the TE system has been included in the World Meteorological Organization as a Global Hydrological Modelling System. All TE‐Global products can be freely accessed through File Transfer Protocol.

Background and purposeThe systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is a novel immune inflammatory marker which has been proven to have excellent predictive value for many diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of SII at different time points after admission for functional outcome at discharge in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).MethodsThe clinical data of patients with ICH who were treated at a medical center for neurological diseases in China between October 2012 and April 2022 were analyzed in this retrospective study. The SII was calculated based on neutrophil×platelet/lymphocyte counts and collected within the first 14 days after admission to analyze the dynamic changes. Adverse outcome was defined as a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 4–6 at discharge. The correlation between the SII and the outcome was assessed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. The ability of SII to predict outcome was evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC).ResultsA total of 1,569 patients with ICH were included, of whom 790 had adverse outcome (50.35%). The Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that SII at any time point within 14 days after admission was significantly associated with adverse outcome. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the SII within 7 days after admission was found to be an independent predictor of adverse functional outcome in ICH patients at discharge. The ROC curve demonstrated that compared to other time points, the SII on day 2 after admission exhibited stronger predictive power for the functional outcome of patients with ICH at discharge (AUC:0.733, 95%CI = 0.679–0.787) (sensitivity 47.09%, specificity 87.02%) (OR 1.074, 95%CI = 1.033–1.126, p = 0.001).ConclusionSII within 7 days after admission, especially on day 2, is independently associated with adverse functional outcome in ICH patients at discharge. This association could be utilized in clinical practice and warrants further investigation.

Abstract The ever-growing quantities of persistent Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) wastes, along with consequential ecological and human health concerns, stimulate the need for alternative PTFE disposal method. The central research challenge lies in elucidating the decomposition mechanism of PTFE during high-temperature waste treatment. Here, we propose the PTFE microscopic thermal decomposition pathways by integrating plasma gasification experiments with multi-scale simulations strategies. Molecular dynamic simulations reveal a pyrolysis—oxidation & chain-shortening—deep defluorination (POCD) degradation pathway in an oxygen atmosphere, and an F abstraction—hydrolysis—deep defluorination (FHD) pathway in a steam atmosphere. Density functional theory computations demonstrate the vital roles of 1O2 and ·H radicals in the scission of PTFE carbon skeleton, validating the proposed pathways. Experimental results confirm the simulation results and show that up to 80.12% of gaseous fluorine can be recovered through plasma gasification within 5 min, under the optimized operating conditions determined through response surface methodology.

This study designed a novel high-temperature corrosion-resistant alloy through thermodynamic equilibrium computations. The strength was determined by the integration of precipitation-strengthening species of nickel boride and tungsten solid solution strengthening, while high-temperature corrosion-resistant property was realized through optimized compositional design. Phase stability was enabled by the presence of a face-centered cubic structure. The alloy was fabricated and its corrosion-resistance performance was experimentally compared with other commercially available nickel- and iron-based alloys under simulated municipal solid waste combustion. The designed alloy with a composition of Ni-5B-6W-28Cr-13Al showed a low corrosion rate of ∼72 % Inconel 625. Economic analysis showed that Ni-5B-6W-28Cr-13Al has a cost-effectiveness ratio of 1:1.57 with respect to Inconel 625 and 1:0.09 with respect to 13CrMo4-5TS. Corrosion-resistance mechanism was explored using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray diffractometer, and DFT computations. The corrosion resistance occurred through the formation of a uniform tungsten-chromium-oxide film which inhibits inward diffusion of corrosive chlorine species. These findings provide insights into the development of alloys for high-temperature technologies.

Summary: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play crucial biological functions in various tumors, including bladder cancer (BCa). However, the roles and underlying molecular mechanisms of circRNAs in the malignant proliferation of BCa are yet unknown. CircKDM1A was observed to be downregulated in BCa tissues and cells. Knockdown of circKDM1A promoted the proliferation of BCa cells and bladder xenograft growth, while the overexpression of circKDM1A exerts the opposite effect. The dual-luciferase reporter assay revealed that circKDM1A was directly bound to miR-889-3p, acting as its molecular sponge to downregulate CPEB3. In turn, the CPEB3 was bound to the CPE signal in p53 mRNA 3′UTR to stabilize its expression. Thus, circKDM1A-mediated CPEB3 downregulation inhibits the stability of p53 mRNA and promotes BCa malignant progression. In conclusion, circKDM1A functions as a tumor suppressor in the malignant proliferation of BCa via the miR-889-3p/CPEB3/p53 axis. CircKDM1A may be a potential prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target of BCa.

As the dominant waste disposal process, incineration is regarded as the main incentive for the “not-in-my-backyard” syndrome, and faces an inescapable pressures of ultra-low emissions (ULE). Establishing precise response relationships between emission factors (EFs) and full-process influencing factors can provide guidance for the synergistic mitigation of flue gas pollutants (FGPs). In this work, the multi-dimensional EFs of FGPs were identified by initially integrating FGPs concentration monitoring data of existing 1,226 processing lines in China, technologies applied and operational experience (OE), local economic and political characteristics. Significant regional imbalance performance was observed, which EFs in the coastal regions were 3.55–92.39 % lower than those of the inland areas. NOx, SO2, HCl were identified as critical components requiring further reduction under the ULE standards, with exceedance rates recorded at 73.07 %, 38.90 %, and 56.69 %, respectively. An indicative value of 20 mg/m3 for PM is recommended for the control of heavy metals of Cd + Tl and Sb + As + Pb + Cr + Co + Cu + Mn + Ni based on the correlation coefficients of r = 0.28 (p

This study reports the optimum hydrogen (H2) production from municipal solid waste (MSW) via waste eggshell derived-CaO catalyst through gasification technology. The response surface model was applied to design the experiments and the data validation. Results showed that CaO catalyst had a better performance that enhanced 15 mol% more H2 production than non-catalytic gasification by mainly involving reaction temperature and catalyst loading as the critical parameters. Tar content was efficiently declined from 11.34 wt. % to 4.7 , wt. %, which ultimately elevated the H2 and syngas from 33.95 mol% to 51.27 mol% and 74.05 to 83.4674.05–83.46 wt. %, respectively. The model showed a strong interaction among the statistical parameters verified through the regression values; R2 = 0.990, P-value = 0.000005, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller techniques investigated the catalyst's structure hence; presented comparable results. From tar analysis, the aromatics were found as the dominant family followed by polycyclic aromatic, phenyls, aliphatic, aromatic heterocyclic, polycyclic, and aromatic ketones. Optimum H2 production of 51.27 mol% (with H2/CO ratio 2.82, LHV 9.47 MJ/Nm3, and H2 yield 22.74 mol kg-MSW−1) was produced which can be a better alternative to depleting fossil fuels and utilized for liquid fuel manufacturing and power generation.

In this study, the corrosion behavior of a newly designed alloy (Ni–5W–6B–28Cr–13Al) in simulated municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration atmosphere in the presence of HCl, NaCl, and SO2 under an oxidizing humidity condition at 600 °C was conducted. The combined effects of these aggressive species on corrosion mechanism were elucidated by means of XRD, SEM, EDS, and thermodynamic calculations. The results showed that the contribution to the corrosion rate was in the order of NaCl + HCl > NaCl > HCl. The alloy was rarely corroded without NaCl coating, while the alloy experienced enhanced corrosion attack of 12.183 mg/cm2 under NaCl exposure. In the presence of HCl and NaCl, the accelerated corrosion of the tested alloy reached a maximum mass gain of 75.592 mg/cm2. Both experimental and theoretical results suggested that the corrosion occurred via an active oxidation reaction where the NaCl coating was converted to molten phase which degraded the alloy forming a massive unprotective oxide scales. Nonetheless, the synergistic effect of NaCl and HCl was significantly suppressed by the sulfation after SO2 application of nearly 50% less than the mass change before SO2 application.

Abstract ECD is considered to have rapid progression and poor prognosis. Studies have shown that vemurafenib is effective for ECD patients with orbital involvement, but not for ECD with multiple organs. The refinement of treatment approaches and the increased awareness of ECD have led to a dramatic improvement in prognosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive disease with unknown etiology and limited therapeutic options. Activation of fibroblasts is a prominent feature of pulmonary fibrosis. Here we report that lncRNA DACH1 (dachshund homolog 1) is downregulated in the lungs of IPF patients and in an experimental mouse model of lung fibrosis. LncDACH1 knockout mice develop spontaneous pulmonary fibrosis, whereas overexpression of LncDACH1 attenuated TGF-β1-induced aberrant activation, collagen deposition and differentiation of mouse lung fibroblasts. Similarly, forced expression of LncDACH1 not only prevented bleomycin (BLM)-induced lung fibrosis, but also reversed established lung fibrosis in a BLM model. Mechanistically, LncDACH1 binding to the serine/arginine-rich splicing factor 1 (SRSF1) protein decreases its activity and inhibits the accumulation of Ctnnb1. Enhanced expression of SRSF1 blocked the anti-fibrotic effect of LncDACH1 in lung fibroblasts. Furthermore, loss of LncDACH1 promoted proliferation, differentiation, and extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition in mouse lung fibroblasts, whereas such effects were abolished by silencing of Ctnnb1. In addition, a conserved fragment of LncDACH1 alleviated hyperproliferation, ECM deposition and differentiation of MRC-5 cells driven by TGF-β1. Collectively, LncDACH1 inhibits lung fibrosis by interacting with SRSF1 to suppress CTNNB1 accumulation, suggesting that LncDACH1 might be a potential therapeutic target for pulmonary fibrosis.

Cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs) have increasingly been applied in education and other fields. This article provides an overview of a widely used CDM, namely, the G-DINA model, and demonstrates a hands-on example of using multiple R packages for a series of CDM analyses. This overview involves a step-by-step illustration and explanation of performing Q-matrix evaluation, CDM calibration, model fit evaluation, item diagnosticity investigation, classification reliability examination, and the result presentation and visualization. Some limitations of conducting CDM analysis in R are also discussed.

Abstract Background Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been shown to play vital biological functions in various tumors, including prostate cancer (PCa). However, the roles of circRNAs in the metastasis of PCa remain unclear. In the present study, differentially expressed circRNAs associated with PCa metastasis were screened using high-throughput RNA sequencing, from which hsa_circ_0004296 was identified. Methods Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was used to detect the expression of circ_0004296 in PCa tissues and adjacent normal tissues as well as in blood and urine. Gain and loss of function experiments were performed to investigate the function of circ_0004296 in PCa. Bioinformatics analyses, RNA pull-down assay, and mass spectrometry were conducted to identify RNA-binding proteins. RNA immunoprecipitation and RNA and protein nuclear-cytoplasmic fractionation were performed to investigate the underlying mechanism. A xenograft mouse model was used to analyze the effect of circ_0004296 on PCa growth and metastasis in vivo. Results The expression of circ_0004296 was decreased in PCa tissues, blood, and urine, which was negatively associated with metastasis. Furthermore, gain and loss of function experiments in vitro and in vivo showed that circ_0004296 inhibited the proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition of PCa cells. Mechanistically, circ_0004296 regulated host gene ETS1 expression at the post-transcriptional level. EIF4A3 was identified and confirmed as the downstream binding protein of circ_0004296. EIF4A3 expression was significantly upregulated in PCa tissues and associated with PCa metastasis. Silencing EIF4A3 suppressed PCa cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and EMT. Conclusions Circ_0004296 overexpression efficiently inhibited ETS1 mRNA nuclear export by promoting EIF4A3 retention in the nucleus, leading to the downregulation of ETS1 expression and suppression of PCa metastasis; thus, circ_0004296 might be a potential biomarker and therapeutic target for patients with PCa.

Abstract Quantum coherence is the most fundamental of all quantum quantifiers, underlying other well-known quantities such as entanglement. It can be distributed in a multipartite system in various ways—for example, in a bipartite system it can exist within subsystems (local coherence) or collectively between the subsystems (global coherence), and exhibits a trade-off relation. In this paper, we experimentally verify these coherence trade-off relations in adiabatically evolved nuclear spin systems using an NMR spectrometer. We study the full set of coherence trade-off relations between the original state, the bipartite product state, the tripartite product state, and the decohered product state. We also experimentally verify the monogamy inequality and show that both the quantum systems are polygamous during the evolution. We find that the properties of the state in terms of coherence and monogamy are equivalent. This illustrates the utility of using coherence as a characterization tool for quantum states.

Lalin River is a first-level tributary of the right bank of Songhua River. High-quality corn production bases irrigated by the Lalin River are famous throughout the country. However, in the last few decades, the hydrological regimes changed severely due to expansion of the irrigation area, leading to more water used for irrigation. To investigate the variation of the hydrological situation, we analyzed the daily runoff data at the Caijiagou Hydrological Station from 1954 to 2015 by using the Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) and the range of variability approach (RVA). The results showed a severe decreasing trend of the average monthly flow during the water level with regular and high periods, with a negative slope of −2.924 in August and −2.518 in September. The increasing trend of low pulse and fall rate of flow and the decreasing trend of the rising rate of flow demonstrate that water resources are drying up. Regarding the flow rate, the annual maximum value decreased significantly in slopes of −7.9, −7.6, −6.09, −5.28, and −2.98 on the 1-day, 3-day, 7-day, 30-day, and 90-day, respectively. The flow reversals’ average value is 65 to 50 times/year from 1954 to 2015. From RVA analysis, the hydrological alteration of the basin decreased 50% after 1978. To investigate the influencing factors for the hydrological alteration, we analyzed the variation in land cover and land use between 1978 and 2015. The results showed that the area of paddy fields in 2015 was 1.5 times that of 1978, and the water consumption in paddy fields accounts for 80.8% of the total water resources. Consequently, the wetland area of the basin in 2015 was only 53% of 1978, and the wetland area of the two wetland nature reserves at the mouth of the Lalin River in 2015 was about 53% of 1978. Furthermore, the meteorological condition in the LRB shows a warming and drying tendency. The air temperature has shown an intensively increased tendency, and precipitation decreased in the last 50 years. This indicates that the hydrological situation in the Lalin River Basin has changed considerably under the dual influence of human activities and global warming.

Abstract Floods can be devastating in densely populated regions along rivers, so attaining a longer forecast lead time with high accuracy is essential for protecting people and property. Although many techniques are used to forecast floods, sufficient validation of the use of a forecast system for operational alert purposes is lacking. In this study, we validated the flooding locations and times of dike breaking that had occurred during Typhoon Hagibis, which caused severe flooding in Japan in 2019. To achieve the goal of the study, we combined a hydrodynamic model with statistical analysis under forcing by a 39-h prediction of the Japan Meteorological Agency's Meso-scale model Grid Point Value (MSM-GPV) and obtained dike-break times for all flooded locations for validation. The results showed that this method was accurate in predicting floods at 130 locations, approximately 91.6% of the total of 142 flooded locations, with a lead time of approximately 32.75 h. In terms of precision, these successfully predicted locations accounted for 24.0% of the total of 542 locations under a flood warning, and on average, the predicted flood time was approximately 8.53 h earlier than a given dike-break time. More warnings were issued for major rivers with severe flooding, indicating that the system is sensitive to extreme flood events and can issue warnings for rivers subject to high risk of flooding.

Cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs) have attracted increasing attention in educational measurement because of their potential to provide diagnostic feedback about students' strengths and weaknesses. This article introduces the feature-rich R package GDINA for conducting a variety of CDM analyses. Built upon a general model framework, a number of CDMs can be calibrated using the GDINA package. Functions are also available for evaluating model-data fit, detecting differential item functioning, validating the item and attribute association, and examining classification accuracy. A grapical user interface is also provided for researchers who are less familar with R. This paper contains both technical details about model estimation and illustrations about how to use the package for data analysis. The GDINA package is also used to replicate published results, showing that it could provide comparable model parameter estimation.

Objective: A high rate of unnecessary thymectomies has been reported. This study aimed to distinguish primary mediastinal lymphomas (PMLs) from thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) by evaluating volumetric and metabolic parameters with 18F-FDG PET/CT. Methods: A total of 136 patients who were pathologically diagnosed with TETs or PMLs were enrolled, and 18F-FDG PET/CT was performed before therapy. Volumetric parameters, including the mean SUV (SUVmean), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG), and SUVmax, were determined and compared between the 2 subtypes. The diagnostic performance of these parameters was evaluated with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: All parameters significantly differed between patients with PMLs and TETs. Patients with lymphomas were younger and had higher SUVmean, SUVmax, TLG, and MTV values than patients with TETs. The MTV and TLG values had similar diagnostic performance. ROC analysis indicated that the areas under the curves of the SUVmean and SUVmax values performed similarly (approximately 0.76) in differentiating patients with PMLs from TETs, and both values were better than the MTV and TLG values. When age was included with the SUVmax in differentiating TETs from PMLs, the AUC was 0.91, and the sensitivity and specificity increased to 80% and 93%, respectively. Conclusions: The SUVmax and volumetric parameters of 18F-FDG PET/CT can be used to distinguish patients with PMLs versus TETs, and thus may aid in preventing unnecessary thymectomies or other invasive operations.

BackgroundClear cell adenocarcinoma (CCA) is considered a relatively rare tumor with a glycogen-rich phenotype. The prognosis of CCA patients is unclear. In this study, recent trends in the epidemiological and prognostic factors of CCA were comprehensively investigated.MethodsPatients with CCA from years 2000 to 2016 were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiological, and End Results (SEER) database. Relevant population data were used to analyze the rates age-adjusted incidence, age-standardized 3-year and 5-year relative survivals, and overall survival (OS).ResultsThe age-adjusted incidence of CCA increased 2.7-fold from the year 2000 (3.3/100,000) to 2016 (8.8/100,000). This increase occurred across all ages, races, stages, and grades. Of all these subgroups, the increase was largest in the grade IV group. The age-standardized 3-year and 5-year relative survivals increased during this study period, rising by 9.1% and 9.5% from 2000 to 2011, respectively. Among all the stages and grades, the relative survival increase was greatest in the grade IV group. According to multivariate analysis of all CCA patients, predictors of OS were: age, gender, year of diagnosis, marital status, race, grade, stage, and primary tumor site (P < 0.001). The OS of all CCA patients during the period 2008 to 2016 was significantly higher than that from 2000 to 2007 (P < 0.001).ConclusionsThe incidence of CCA and survival of these patients improved over time. In particular, the highest increases were reported for grade IV CCA, which may be due to an earlier diagnosis and improved treatment.

Introduction: The benefit of cytoreductive nephrectomy (CN) for metastatic kidney cancer has been challenged recently. The study aimed to evaluate the prognostic roles of surgical resection of primary tumor site for metastatic kidney cancer under a real-world setting.Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2010–2015) and the overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were evaluated using the Cox proportional hazards regression model. One-to-one matching using the propensity score was used to estimate and compare the survival rates.Results: The SEER data contain records of 8,932 patients from 2010 to 2015. The data showed that 61.7% of the patients underwent CN while 38.2% did not receive any surgery. The median survival month for a patient without surgery was 4 months and for a patient with surgery was 19 months. The multivariate analysis showed that surgical resection of the primary tumor site was an independent favorable predictor for both OS and CSS (all p < 0.001) in the original and the matching cohort.Conclusions: In the era of target therapy, CN might still be a vital method to treat metastatic kidney cancer.

CO2 conversion to liquid fuels provides an appealing means to remove the greenhouse gas, although it is challenging to find materials that are both active and selective. Here, authors show sulfur-doped indium to be a highly active and selective electrocatalyst that transforms CO2 into formate.

The transportation sector is a major source of greenhouse gases and air pollutants, and it has a crucial effect on the synergistic reduction of NOx and carbon. In order to find the energy-efficient vehicle technologies with the highest net reduction potential and lowest net reduction cost over the life cycle, this study traced the CO2 and NOx emission streams of 33 energy-efficient technologies, hidden in the supply chain during the production phase, through structural path analysis, and measured the emission reductions during the use phase using the emission factor method. Moreover, we applied structural decomposition analysis to quantify the three main drivers, including emission intensity, industrial structure, and final demand, of changes in CO2 and NOx emissions from 11 transport subsectors during 2012–2018. Results indicate that CO2 emissions of the transport sector more than doubled from 2012 to 2018; however, the influence of NOx was less significant. The final demand of the road subsector was the most significant driver contributing to CO2 emission changes, with an increase of 109.27 Mt. The emission intensity of road transportation caused the greatest mitigation effect on NOx emission changes, with a decrease of 1902 Kt. The findings of the scenario analysis demonstrate that the most efficient action of the pure electric technology for passenger cars reduces 20.92 Mt NOx emissions, and the parallel hybrid technology for heavy trucks offers the greatest cost effectiveness with a net abatement of 2577 Mt CO2 over its life cycle. Consequently, the aggressive development of new energy technology has become a prerequisite strategy to synergistically reduce CO2 and NOx emissions.

Background Xingnaojing injections (XNJI) are widely used in Chinese medicine to mitigate brain injuries. An increasing number of studies have shown that XNJI may improve neurological function. However, XNJI’s active ingredients and molecular mechanisms when treating traumatic brain injury (TBI) are unknown. Methods XNJI’s chemical composition was acquisited from literature and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology (TCMSP) database. We used the “absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion” (ADME) parameter-based virtual algorithm to further identify the bioactive components. We then screened data and obtained target information regarding TBI and treatment compounds from public databases. Using a Venn diagram, we intersected the information to determine the hub targets. Cytoscape was used to construct and visualize the network. In accordance with the hub proteins, we then created a protein–protein interaction (PPI) network using STRING 11.0. Gene Ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways were analyzed according to the DAVID bioinformatics resource database (ver. 6.8). We validated the predicted compound’s efficacy using the experimental rat chronic constriction injury (CCI) model. The neuronal apoptosis was located using the TUNEL assay and the related pathways’ hub proteins were determined by PCR, Western blot, and immunohistochemical staining. Results We identified 173 targets and 35 potential compounds belonging to XNJI. STRING analysis was used to illustrate the protein–protein interactions and show that muscone played a fundamental role in XNJI’s efficacy. Enrichment analysis revealed critical signaling pathways in these components’ potential protein targets, including PI3K/AKT1, NF-kB, and p53. Moreover, the hub proteins CASP3, BCL2L1, and CASP8 were also involved in apoptosis and were associated with PI3K/AKT, NF-kB, and p53 signaling pathways. We showed that muscone and XNJI were similarly effective 168 h after CCI, demonstrating that the muscone in XNJI significantly attenuated neuronal apoptosis through the PI3K/Akt1/NF-kB/P53 pathway. Conclusion We verified the neuroprotective mechanism in muscone for the first time in TBI. Network pharmacology offers a new approach for identifying the potential active ingredients in XNJI.

BackgroundTobacco smoking is a carcinogen for many cancers including bladder cancer. The microbiota is involved in the occurrence, development, and treatment of tumors. We explored the composition of male urinary microbiome and the correlation between tobacco smoking and microbiome in this study.MethodsAlpha diversity, principal component analysis (PCA) and Adonis analysis, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) coupled with effect size measurement, and PICRUSt function predictive analysis were used to compare different microbiome between smokers and non-smokers in men.ResultsThere were 26 qualified samples included in the study. Eleven of them are healthy controls, and the others are from men with bladder cancer. Simpson index and the result of PCA analysis between smokers and non-smokers were not different (P > 0.05) in healthy men. However, the abundance of Bacteroidaceae, Erysipelotrichales, Lachnospiraceae, Bacteroides, and so on in the urinary tract of smokers is much higher than that of non-smokers. Compared to non-smokers, the alpha diversity in smokers was elevated in patients with bladder cancer (P < 0.05). PCA analysis showed a significant difference between smokers and non-smokers (P < 0.001), indicating that tobacco smoking plays a vital role in urinary tract microbial composition.ConclusionThe composition of microbiome in the urinary tract is closely related to tobacco smoking. This phenomenon is more significant in patients with bladder cancer. This indicates tobacco smoking may promote the occurrence and development of bladder cancer by changing urinary tract microbiome.

This study investigated the physiological and ecological processes of Taxodium distichum in the water-level-fluctuating zone (WLFZ) of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). We determined the contents of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), N and P in the aboveground parts and root systems of T. distichum individuals that had experienced 3 yearly flooding cycles. These flooding cycles were driven by the operation of the reservoir in the Zhong County vegetation restoration demonstration area. This flooding inhibited the growth of T. distichum. The plant heights and canopy diameters of the flooded groups were significantly smaller than those of the control group. The flooding facilitated the synthesis of NSCs, and the soluble sugar content in the NSCs increased. The flooding inhibited the uptake of N and P, but the N/P ratios remained stable. The ratios of NSCs to N or P increased. T. distichum adapts well to submergence because of its regulation of NSC synthesis and storage, its balancing of the inputs of photosynthetic products to growth and storage, and its storage of material during exposure to maintain physiological activities during winter submergence and the energy sources required for growth during exposure. This study may provide a useful reference for use in vegetation reconstructions in areas with hydrological characteristics similar to those of the TGR.

Bell’s inequality provides a remarkable way to test the consistency between quantum mechanics and classic local realistic theory. However, experimental demonstrations of the loophole-free Bell test are challenging and only recently have been demonstrated with bipartite systems. A central obstacle for the photonic system is that the sampling efficiency, including the collection and detection efficiencies, must be above a certain threshold. We here generalize two-particle Eberhard’s inequality to the n-particle systems and derive a Bell-type inequality for multi-particle systems, which significantly relaxes this threshold. Furthermore, an experimental proposal to achieve a multi-partite Bell test without the fair sampling assumption is presented for the case of three particles. For any given value of the sampling efficiency, we give the optimal configurations for actual implementation, the optimal state, the maximum background noise that the system can tolerate, and the lowest fidelity of the quantum state. We believe our work can serve as a recipe for experimentalists planning to violate local realism using a multi-partite quantum state without the sampling loophole.

Most existing diagnostic models are developed to detect whether students have mastered a set of skills of interest, but few have focused on identifying what scientific misconceptions students possess. This article developed a general dual-purpose model for simultaneously estimating students' overall ability and the presence and absence of misconceptions. The expectation-maximization algorithm was developed to estimate the model parameters. A simulation study was conducted to evaluate to what extent the parameters can be accurately recovered under varied conditions. A set of real data in science education was also analyzed to examine the viability of the proposed model in practice.

Constellations of small satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) payloads can realize observations in short time intervals independently from daylight and weather conditions and this technology is now in the early stages of development. This tool would greatly contribute to rapid flood monitoring, which is usually one of the main missions in upcoming plans, but few studies have focused on this potential application and a required observation performance for flood disaster monitoring has been unclear. In this study, we propose an unprecedented method for investigating how flood extents would be temporally and spatially observed with a SAR small-satellite constellation and for evaluating that observation performance via an original index. The virtual experiments of flood monitoring with designed constellations were conducted using two case studies of flood events in Japan. Experimental results showed that a SAR small-satellite constellation with sun-synchronous orbit at 570 km altitude, 30-km swath, 15–30° incidence angle, and 20 satellites can achieve 87% acquisition of cumulative flood extent in total observations. There is a difference between the results of observation performance in two cases because of each flood’s characteristics and a SAR satellite’s observation system, which implies the necessity of individual assessments for various types of rivers.

A log-linear cognitive diagnostic model (LCDM) is estimated via a global optimization approach- differential evolution optimization (DEoptim), which can be used when the traditional expectation maximization (EM) fails. The application of the DEoptim to LCDM estimation is introduced, explicated, and evaluated via a Monte Carlo simulation study in this article. The aim of this study is to fill the gap between the field of psychometric modeling and modern machine learning estimation techniques and provide an alternative solution in the model estimation.

Organic carbon (C) and oxygen (O) contained in sewage sludge strongly impact its thermal behavior during pyrolysis treatment. This study was aimed at getting an insight into the decomposition mechanism of organic compounds containing C and O during sludge pyrolysis using thermo-gravimetric Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) and pyrolysis-gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and helpfully improving energy conversion of sewage sludge. The temperature domains of transformation were determined and indications of the main compounds produced during each stage were obtained. Results showed that the volatile compounds that evolved after sludge pyrolysis were mainly distributed into six groups: alkenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, phenols and carboxylic acids.
