Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are key precursors of ozone and particulate matter, which are the two dominant air pollutants in urban environments. However, compositions and sources of VOCs in urban air aloft have rarely been reported so far. To address this matter, highly time-resolved measurements of VOCs were made by a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) at a 450 m platform on the Canton Tower in Guangzhou, China. A combination of in situ measurements and modeling techniques was used to characterize variations in and sources of VOCs. Five sources were identified from positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis, namely daytime mixed (e.g., biogenic emissions and secondary formation), visitor-related (e.g., human breath, cooking, and volatilization of ethanol-containing products), vehicular–industrial, regional transport, and volatile chemical product (VCP) (i.e., volatilization of personal care products), contributing on average to 21 %, 30 %, 28 %, 10 %, and 11 % of total VOC (TVOC) mixing ratios, respectively. We observe that contributions of the visitor-related source, mainly composed of ethanol, followed with the variation in visitor numbers on the tower well. The VCP-dominated source only had an average contribution of ∼5.7 ppb during the campaign, accounting for a small fraction (11 %) of TVOC mixing ratios but a large fraction (22 %) of the total OH reactivity. However, large fractions of reactive VOC species, e.g., monoterpenes (49 %), were attributed to the VCP-dominated source, indicating important contributions of VCPs to ambient concentrations of these species in urban environments. Vertical profiles of air pollutants (namely NOx, ozone, Ox, and PM2.5), measured at 5, 118, 168, and 488 m, exhibited more evident gradients at night than in the daytime owing to the stronger stability of the nocturnal boundary layer. Mixing ratios of VOC species during the nighttime generally decreased with time when the 450 m platform was located in the nocturnal residual layer and markedly increased when impacted by emissions at ground level. The results in this study demonstrated composition characteristics and sources of VOCs in urban air aloft, which could provide valuable implications in making strategies for control of VOCs and secondary air pollutants.

High concentrations of nitrous acid (HONO) have been observed in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of China in recent years, contributing to an elevated atmospheric oxidation capacity due to the production of OH through HONO photolysis. We investigated the budget of HONO at an urban site in Guangzhou from 27 September to 9 November 2018 using data from a comprehensive atmospheric observation campaign. During this period, measured concentrations of HONO were 0.02 to 4.43 ppbv, with an average of 0.74 ± 0.70 ppbv. An emission ratio (HONO/NOx) of 0.9 ± 0.4 % was derived from 11 fresh plumes. The primary emission rate of HONO at night was calculated to be between 0.04 ± 0.02 and 0.30 ± 0.15 ppbv h−1 based on a high-resolution NOx emission inventory. Heterogeneous conversion of NO2 on the ground surface (0.27 ± 0.13 ppbv h−1), primary emissions from vehicle exhaust (between 0.04 ± 0.02 and 0.30 ± 0.15 ppbv h−1, with a middle value of 0.16 ± 0.07 ppbv h−1), and the homogeneous reaction of NO + OH (0.14 ± 0.30 ppbv h−1) were found to be the three largest sources of HONO at night. Heterogeneous NO2 conversion on aerosol surfaces (0.03 ± 0.02 ppbv h−1) and soil emission (0.019 ± 0.009 ppbv h−1) were two other minor sources. Correlation analysis shows that NH3 and the relative humidity (RH) may have participated in the heterogeneous transformation of NO2 to HONO at night. Dry deposition (0.41 ± 0.31 ppbv h−1) was the main removal process of HONO at night, followed by dilution (0.18 ± 0.16 ppbv h−1), while HONO loss at aerosol surfaces was much slower (0.008 ± 0.006 ppbv h−1). In the daytime, the average primary emission Pemis was 0.12 ± 0.02 ppbv h−1, and the homogeneous reaction POH+NO was 0.79 ± 0.61 ppbv h−1, larger than the unknown source PUnknown (0.65 ± 0.46 ppbv h−1). Similar to previous studies, PUnknown appeared to be related to the photo-enhanced conversion of NO2. Our results show that primary emissions and the reaction of NO + OH can significantly affect HONO at a site with intensive emissions during both the daytime and nighttime. Uncertainty in parameter values assumed in the calculation of HONO sources can have a strong impact on the relative importance of HONO sources at night, and could be reduced by improving knowledge of key parameters such as the NO2 uptake coefficient. The uncertainty in the estimated direct emission can be reduced by using emission data with higher resolution and quality. Our study highlights the importance of better constraining both conventional and novel HONO sources by reducing uncertainties in their key parameters for advancing our knowledge of this important source of atmospheric OH.

Recently, there is a surge of research interest in configurable ferroelectric conductive domain walls which have been considered as possible fundamental building blocks for future electronic devices. In this work, by using piezoresponse force microscopy and conductive atomic force microscopy, we demonstrated the controlled manipulation of various conductive domain walls in epitaxial BiFeO3 thin films, e.g. neutral domain walls (NDW) and charged domain walls (CDWs). More interestingly, a specific type of nanoscale domains was also identified, which are surrounded by highly conductive circular CWDs. Similar nanoscale domains can also be controlled created and erasured by applying local field via conductive probe, which allow nondestructive current readout of different domain states with a large on/off resistance ratio up to 102. The results indicate the potential to design and develop high-density non-volatile ferroelectric memories by utilizing these programable conductive nanoscale domain walls.

The pristine g-C3N4 (BCN) with a low conversion efficiency of CO2 exits with small specific surface area, weak CO2 adsorption and severe recombination of photo-generated charges. The stripping of few-layer g-C3N4 represents excellent photocatalytic performance, which attracts extensive attention in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. In the present study, the ultra-thin porous g-C3N4 (THCN) with high specific surface area and high position of conduction band was prepared using step-by-step synergistic exfoliation. Further, we treated it with HCl-assisted hydrothermal stripping and successive thermal stripping/etching in air. Our results showed that the THCN exhibited the best CO2 conversion efficiency from CO2 to CH4 and CO fuels, compared with g-C3N4 (HCN) prepared by HCl-assisted hydrothermal stripping and g-C3N4 (TCN) prepared by thermal stripping/etching in air. Further, the excellent photocatalytic performance for CO2 reduction was mainly attributed to its high specific surface area and rich pores, excellent separation and utilization efficiency of photo-generated carriers, and upper position of conduction band. Due to its wide band gap and high specific surface area, the THCN also showed significantly better degradation for Rhodamine B than BCN, HCN and TCN. Nonetheless, using a simple two-step stripping strategy, we prepared and obtained an ultra-thin porous g-C3N4 nanosheets with a high specific surface area for CO2 conversion to CH4 and CO fuels. This ultimately provided a reference for preparation of other two-dimensional ultra-thin materials for CO2 reduction.

Ferroelectric topological objects (e.g. vortices, skyrmions) provide a fertile ground for exploring emerging physical properties that could potentially be utilized in future configurable nanoelectronic devices. Here, we demonstrate quasi-one-dimensional metallic high conduction channels along two types of exotic topological defects, i.e. the topological cores of (i) a quadrant vortex domain structure and (ii) a center domain (monopole-like) structure confined in high quality BiFeO3 nanoisland array, abbreviated as the vortex core and the center core. We unveil via phase-field simulations that the superfine (< 3 nm) metallic conduction channels along center cores arise from the screening charge carriers confined at the core whereas the high conductance of vortex cores results from a field-induced twisted state. These conducting channels can be repeatedly and reversibly created and deleted by manipulating the two topological states via an electric field, leading to an apparent electroresistance effect with an on/off ratio higher than 103. These results open up the possibility of utilizing these functional one-dimensional topological objects in high-density nanoelectronic devices such as ultrahigh density nonvolatile memory., manuscript (21 pages, 4 figures) plus supplementary information

This cross-sectional study aimed to describe the characteristics of physical activity-related injury (PARI) and to explore its associated factors among university students in Chaoshan district. Selected from the baseline survey in March and April, 434 students graded 1–3 from two universities were interviewed face-to-face in April and May 2017. Socio-demographics, physical activity (PA) participation, risk-taking behaviors, and PARI occurrences in the past 12 months were collected. Group Lasso logistic regression was applied to identify the risk factors of PARI. Totally, 317 PARI episodes were reported by 184 subjects with an overall injury risk of 0.73 injuries/student/year (males: 1.00, females: 0.63) and an injury incidence density of 0.81 injuries per 1000 PA exposure hours (males: 1.13, females: 0.69). Most injuries involved the lower extremities and were sprains and strains. Males, sports team members, and those with high-risk rebellious and anti-social behaviors were more likely to sustain PARI compared to their counterparts. Those who participated in vigorous-intensity PA with longer duration (particularly ≥ 150 min/week) were at a higher risk for PARI. This study indicates that PARI is a health concern among university students and great efforts should be taken to prevent them from PARI when promoting a physically active lifestyle.

The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an intervention program based on Health-Related Behavior Theory (HRBT) in reducing physical activity-related injuries (PARIs) occurrence and individual risk-taking behaviors, as well as improving PA-related behaviors. A total of 1044 students from six junior middle schools in Shantou city were included and divided randomly into an intervention group (n = 550) and a control group (n = 494), respectively. The intervention group followed a prescribed PARIs intervention program based on HRBT, and the control group performed a common health education program, consisting of seven sessions and lasting seven months from May to November 2018. After the intervention, both groups showed a significantly lower prevalence of PARIs (intervention group: from 25.45% to 10.91%, control group: from 29.76% to 11.74%, both p < 0.05), but no significant between-group differences could be observed in the post-intervention PARIs prevalence (p > 0.05). Compared with the control group, students in the intervention group had a higher improvement in PA-related behaviors and a lower score of risk-taking behaviors (both p < 0.05). Thus, it could be concluded that the HRBT intervention program had a positive effect on PA-related and risk-taking behaviors in junior middle school students, though its effectiveness in reducing the occurrence of PARIs was not significant.

Exotic topological domains in BiFeO3 nanoislands have attracted much attention regarding their potential applications in advanced electronic devices. Here, different from the earlier reported disordered distributed BiFeO3 nanoislands formed by a self-assembly method, we fabricated an ordered BiFeO3 nanoisland array by mask-assisted pulsed laser deposition on a SrTiO3 substrate, which exhibits a center-converged in-plane polarization component and a monodomain pattern along the vertical direction. Such center-type quad-domain structures exhibit high stability, maintaining their topological structures after heating to 250 °C and subsequently cooling to room temperature. Moreover, they can be switched by applying a scanning electric field and recovered by applying a heating and cooling process. Observing this topological structure in BiFeO3 nanoislands might provide a suitable platform for further exploration of its topological phase transition properties, new functions, and potential applications.

The discovery and precise manipulation of atomic-size conductive ferroelectric domain walls offers new opportunities for a wide range of prospective electronic devices, and the emerging field of walltronics. Herein, a highly stable and fatigue-resistant nonvolatile memory device is demonstrated, which is based on deterministic creation and erasure of conductive domain walls that are geometrically confined in a topological domain structure. The time for drones to complete their missions is limited. When sensors detect targets or perform multiple tasks, the pressure of insufficient resources can be quite high, and even task overload may lead to task failure. This paper focuses on a multi-UAV target assignment method. Compared with the classical model-solving method, which can find the satisfactory solution in a short time. Finally, through MATLAB simulation and verification, we find that the method in this paper has better dynamic adaptability to the complex and changeable environments.

Although recent laboratory simulations have demonstrated that organic matter prevents the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), their role in the long-range transport of PAHs in the real atmosphere remains poorly understood. In this study, we measured the chemical composition and mixing state of PAHs-containing individual particles in aerosols from three sources, one urban area and one remote area. PAHs-containing particles were classified into five types: organic carbon (OC), potassium mixed with organic carbon (KOC), potassium mixed with sodium (KNa), Krich and PAH-rich. The PAH-rich and KOC particles were the main types of particles produced by vehicle exhaust/coal burning and biomass burning, respectively, accounting for50% of the PAHs-containing particles. It was found that organic matter enhancement of PAHs-containing particles occurs in the ambient atmosphere, with organic-rich (OC and KOC) particles accounting for90%. Further analysis revealed that the increase in the fractions of PAHs was related to the mixing state with organic compounds due to the protection of organics against PAHs and/or the aging of PAHs-containing particles. The results of this study improve our understanding of the chemical composition and mixing state of PAHs particles in atmospheric aerosols from emission sources and urban and remote areas, and provide field observation evidence to support the promotion of the study of long-range transport of PAHs by organics.

The catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is a candidate gene to provide promising evidence of psychiatric disorders, but there is a knowledge gap between the genetic factor and multiple physical activity-related injuries (PARIs). The aim of this study was to explore the contribution of COMT to the risk of PARIs among university students in the Chinese Han population. We can further search for the intrinsic risk factors for the occurrence of multiple physical activity injuries and provide a scientific basis for early screening and precise intervention for the high-risk group of college students with multiple PARIs. A 1:1 matched case-control study of 61 PARIs cases and 61 healthy controls were carried out. DNA samples of the participants were isolated from saliva and genotyped on eight SNPs of the COMT gene (rs9265, rs4680, rs6269, rs4818, rs4633, rs165655, rs165656, and rs165722) using the MALDI-TOF MS method. We found that rs6269 and rs4818 were significantly associated with PARIs, and rs6269-GG and rs4818-GG contributed to the reduced risk of PARIs. Further haplotype analysis showed a four-marker C-G-C-G haplotype (rs165722-rs6269-rs4633-rs4818) acted with a protective role in the development of PARIs (p = 0.037, OR: 0.474, 95% CI: 0.269 to 0.834). However, the interactions between club membership and rs6269 or rs4818 would significantly increase the risk of PARIs (both p &lt, 0.001, OR: 5.121 and 4.977, respectively). This is the first study to find the contribution of COMT to PARIs occurrence, suggesting that the COMT polymorphisms and the gene–environment interactions may alter the risk of PARIs.

The hygroscopicity of organic aerosol (OA) is important for investigation of its climatic and environmental impacts. However, the hygroscopicity parameter κOA remains poorly characterized, especially in the relatively polluted environment on the North China Plain (NCP). Here we conducted simultaneous wintertime measurements of bulk aerosol chemical compositions of PM2.5 and PM1 and bulk aerosol hygroscopicity of PM10 and PM1 on the NCP using a capture-vaporizer time-of-flight aerosol chemical speciation monitor (CV-ToF-ACSM) and a humidified nephelometer system which measures the aerosol light-scattering enhancement factor f(RH). A method for calculating κOA based on f(RH) and bulk aerosol chemical-composition measurements was developed. We found that κOA varied in a wide range with significant diurnal variations. The derived κOA ranged from almost 0.0 to 0.25, with an average (±1σ) of 0.08 (±0.06) for the entire study. The derived κOA was highly correlated with f44 (fraction of m∕z 44 in OA measured by CV-ToF-ACSM), an indicator of the oxidation degree of OA (R=0.79), and the relationship can be parameterized as κOA=1.04×f44-0.02 (κOA=0.3×O:C-0.02, based on the relationship between the f44 and O∕C ratio for CV-ToF-ACSM). On average, κOA reached the minimum (0.02) in the morning near 07:30 local time (LT) and then increased rapidly, reaching the peak value of 0.16 near 14:30 LT. The diurnal variations in κOA were highly and positively correlated with those of mass fractions of oxygenated OA (R=0.95), indicating that photochemical processing played a dominant role in the increase in κOA in winter on the NCP. Results in this study demonstrate the potential wide applications of a humidified nephelometer system together with aerosol composition measurements for investigating the hygroscopicity of OA in various environments and highlight that the parameterization of κOA as a function of OA aging processes needs to be considered in chemical transport models for better evaluating the impacts of OA on cloud formation, atmospheric chemistry, and radiative forcing.

In this work, chlorine doped Bi–BiO2−x (Cl–Bi–BiO2−x) was prepared by a one-step solvothermal method using sodium bismuthate (NaBiO3·2H2O) as a Bi source without the addition of a surfactant. Both time and temperature of solvothermal reaction may regulate the amount of Bi0 deposition in the photocatalyst, causing surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and oxygen vacancy defects (OVDs). The synergistic effect of SRP and OVD promotes the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, shortens the bandgap, and enhances the optical absorptivity. Imidacloprid, a widely used insecticide, was selected to explore such photocatalysts with controlled OVD and SPR for potential application in pesticide photo-degradation in aqueous solution. Cl–Bi–BiO2−x with a rationally coordinating OVD and SPR shows a narrower band gap, wider light absorption, higher separation efficiency of photo-generated charges and faster pollutant degradation, supporting a green method to synthesize bismuth-based photocatalysts and facilitating the study on the synergistic effect of SPR and OVD on photocatalysts.

Multiferroic nanostructures have been attracting tremendous attention over the past decade, due to their rich cross-coupling effects and prospective electronic applications. In particular, the emergence of some exotic phenomena in size-confined multiferroic systems, including topological domain states such as vortices, center domains, and skyrmion bubble domains, has opened a new avenue to a number of intriguing physical properties and functionalities, and thus underpins a wide range of applications in future nanoelectronic devices. It is also highly appreciated that nano-domain engineering provides a pathway to control the magnetoelectric properties, which is promising for future energy-efficient spintronic devices. In recent years, this field, still in its infancy, has witnessed a rapid development and a number of challenges too. In this article, we shall review the recent advances in the emergent domain-related exotic phenomena in multiferroic nanostructures. Specific attention is paid to the topological domain structures and related novel physical behaviors as well as the electric-field-driven magnetic switching via domain engineering. This review will end with a discussion of future challenges and potential directions.

Knowledge gaps of the physical activity-related injury (PARI) problem among general undergraduates exist. We conducted a study in four universities, where 1421 students graded 1-3 were interviewed face-to-face during April and May after their completion of the baseline survey in March and April 2017, aiming to describe the incidence and characteristics of PARI. PARI experience and physical activity (PA) participation in the past 12 months were collected. Injury incidence density (IID) and risk, and injury characteristics were evaluated for the overall sample and by gender. Pearson chi-square or Fisher's exact tests and independent-sample t tests were used to test between-group differences. We found that 486 PARIs were reported totally by 289 participants, with an overall IID of 0.57 per 1000 hours of exposure (males: 1.07, females: 0.45) and an injury risk of 0.34 injuries/student/y (males: 0.52; females: 0.28). Higher IIDs were found in roller skating, football, and basketball. The majority of injuries occurred outdoors and involved the lower extremities, with sprain and strain being the primary injury types. Moreover, most injuries were new, acute, and happened in non-contact situations. Of all injuries, 52.1% required medical attention and 64.6% resulted in inactivity of one or more days. Some significant differences were observed between males and females. Our study indicates that PARI is a public health concern among Chinese university students, which can provide direction for targeted prophylactic interventions to underpin the sex-specific injury mechanism to reduce PARI.

Assuming dry deposition as the dominant removal process of HONO at night, and a deposition velocity of at least ~2.5 cm s−1 is required to balance the direct emissions and OH + NO reaction. Correlation analysis shows that NH3 and relative humidity (RH) may participate in the heterogeneous transformation from NO2 to HONO at night. In the daytime, the average primary emission Pemis was 0.12 ± 0.01 ppbv h−1, and the homogeneous reaction POH + NO was 0.79 ± 0.61 ppbv h−1, larger than the unknown sources PUnknown (0.65 ± 0.46 ppbv h−1). These results suggest primary emissions as a key factor affecting HONO at our site, both during daytime and nighttime. Similar to previous studies, the daytime unknown source of HONO, PUnknown, appeared to be related to the photo-enhanced conversion of NO2. The daytime average OH production rates by photolysis of HONO was 3.7 × 106 cm−3 s−1, lower than that from O1D + H2O at 4.9 × 106 cm−3 s−1. Simulations of OH and O3 with the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) box model suggested strong enhancement effect of HONO on OH and O3 by 59 % and 68.8 %, respectively, showing a remarkable contribution of HONO to the atmospheric oxidation in the fall season of Guangzhou.

Deposition was the dominant removal process of HONO during night, and a deposition rate of at least 2.5 cm/s is required to balance the direct emissions and OH+NO reaction. In the daytime, the average primary emission Pemis was 0.12±0.01 ppbv/h, and the homogeneous reaction POH+NO was 0.79±0.61 ppbv/h, which was even larger than the unknown sources PUnknown (0.65±0.46 ppbv/h). The results showed that the direct and indirect contributions of primary emission to HONO are great at the site, both during daytime and nighttime. Similar to previous studies, PUnknown was suggested to be related to the photo-enhanced reaction of NO2. The mean OH production rates by photolysis of HONO and O3 were 3.7×106 cm-3·s-1 and 4.9×106 cm-3·s-1, respectively. We further studied the impact of HONO on the atmospheric oxidation by a Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) box model. When constraining observed HONO in the model, OH and O3 increased 59% and 68.8% respectively, showing a remarkable contribution of HONO to the atmospheric oxidation of Guangzhou.

Laboratory studies indicated that soil could produce considerable nitrous acid (HONO) emissions, which is the main primary source of hydroxyl radical (OH) in the troposphere. However, very few field observations of HONO emission from soil were reported. In order to relate laboratory results and field measurements, we measured HONO emissions from 7 representative agricultural soils (rice, vegetables, orchards, peanuts, potatoes, sugarcane and maize) in Guangdong under controlled laboratory conditions, and took flux measurements on 2 of them (rice and vegetables) by dynamic chambers in the field. Generally, release rates of HONO from the seven soils increased with temperature and varied with soil moisture, and the optimum release rates can be reached under specific values of water-filled pore space (WFPS), which is considered to be beneficial to nitrification. The seven soils' optimum release rates ranged from 1.24 to 43.19 ng kg-1 s-1, and the Q10 (It is defined as the multiple of the increase of soil gas emission rate when the temperature increases by 10℃) ranged from 1.03 to 2.25. Formulas were deduced from the lab results to express HONO emissions for every soil. Flux measurements on two soils varied around -1 to 4 ng N m-2 s-1, and both showed similar diurnal variations with peaks around noontime and very low even negative values during nighttime. There were good correlations between HONO fluxes and soil temperature (R2=0.5). Furthermore, irrigation enhanced the HONO emission substantially. However, a large discrepancy existed between soil HONO emissions measured in lab and low HONO fluxes in field. More investigations are needed to explain the paradox.

Photocatalysis with universality and feasibility has been widely applied to degrade pollutants that mainly exist in gas and liquid systems. However, the photocatalytic degradation of contaminants on solid surfaces is rarely reported. The investigation of the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of pesticide on a solid surface will provide a vital reference for removing pesticide residues on fruit surfaces. Here, we discovered that in situ photocatalytic degradation on solid surface (PDSS) is a moisture dependent process regulated by the interaction between TiO2 and H2O. The interaction mechanism between TiO2 and moisture was revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ FT-IR. Meanwhile, we investigated a water layer formed between TiO2 and water on the surface by density functional theory. The photocatalytic degradation process of imidacloprid on the solid surface is proposed. This work explores the H2O impact on photocatalysis in solid surfaces and provides a significant reference for removing pesticide residues in realistic environmental conditions.

ObjectivesData on the problem of physical activity-related injury (PARI) in university students and the risk factors for PARI among different genders are rare. We conducted a multicentre population-based study to investigate the occurrence of PARI and to explore the gender-specific risk factors for PARI among Chinese university students.DesignCross-sectional study.ParticipantsA total of 5341 students in grades 1–3 at eight universities in four Chinese cities were selected to complete the online questionnaires during March and April 2017. The questionnaires assessed sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity PA) involvement, sleep duration, sedentary behaviour and PARI experiences in the past 12 months.Main outcome measuresPARI during the past 12 months.ResultsAmong the 5341 participants, 1293 suffered from at least one PARI in the past 12 months, with an overall incidence rate of 24.2% (males: 26.2%, females: 23.2%) and an injury risk of 0.38 injuries/student/year (males: 0.48, females: 0.32). Over half of the injured (57.3%) experienced a withdrawal time of PA and nearly two-fifths (39.6%) required medical attention. Irrespective of gender, Shantou and Xi’an students, sports team members and those who engaged in sports and leisure-time vigorous-intensity PA (VPA) at a higher frequency were more likely to suffer from PARI. Male students who participated in sports and leisure-time VPA for long durations had a greater likelihood of sustaining PARI, while having a chronic condition and being involved in sports and leisure-time moderate-intensity PA at a higher frequency and longer duration were potential contributors to PARI among females.ConclusionsThe occurrence of PARI and its risk factors differed by gender, which provides a direction towards developing targeted and effective gender-specific preventative programmes to protect Chinese university students from PARI.

Introduction: To report about the successful outbreak containment of COVID-19 in Shantou, one of the prefectural cities of Guangdong province in the mainland China. Methodology: All patients confirmed as having COVID-19 between 23 January and 25 March 2020 by RT-PCR assay in the clinical lab of Shantou CDC were included and divided into three groups based on the source of identification: hospital diagnosis, contact tracing, and community screening. Collected data was analyzed and compared among these three groups. Results: A total of 25 COVID-19 cases were identified in Shantou. The first case was identified on 14 January 2020 at one of two COVID-19 dedicated hospitals in Shantou. The majority of the cases were either imported from Wuhan or linked to Wuhan/Hubei. The median lag time for diagnosis (i.e., the time between symptom onset and case confirmation) was 2 days (IQR, 2.0-4.0) for all cases, 9 days (IQR, 7.0-10.0) for the cases diagnosed in hospitals, 2 days (IQR, 1.5-2.0) for the cases in contact tracing, and 4 days (IQR, 2.5-4.5) for cases in community screening, with a significantly longer diagnosis lag time in hospitals (p = 0.003). Multivariate linear regression models showed larger family size and severe cases as the significant predictor for increasing number of close contacts. Conclusions: The current pandemic appears to exist for an uncertain period. The early containment measures applied in Shantou, a city with insufficient healthcare resources for COVID-19, seems to be appropriate for cities or areas with similar profiles.

We propose a novel method to drive phase transitions by etching strained BiFeO3 thin films to nanoislands. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements reveal that the amount of rhombohedral-like (R) phase increases as the BiFeO3 thin films with tetragonal-like (T) matrix are etched to nanoislands and larger fraction of R phase can be obtained with the size reduction from 1 μm to 200 nm, indicating the T to R phase transitions induced by partial release of substrate clamping. Using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), it is demonstrated that rhombohedral-like (R) to tetragonal-like (T) phase transitions can be reversibly achieved under DC electric field in BFO nanoislands. Large electromechanical response has been observed in BFO nanoislands as well. This approach can be extended to other strained oxide films and provide guidance for the development of high-performance electromechanical lead-free materials.

The wettability of the coating used in controlled release fertilizers (CRFs) is a crucial parameter for the release behavior of nutrients. However, how to control the wettability of coating to tune nutrient release is a big challenge. Herein, the alkylamine-poly (tannic acid) (APTA) building blocks coatings with controlled wettability were prepared as coating materials for CRFs. Alkylamine (octadecylamine (ODA), hexadecylamine (HDA), dodecylamine (DDA), and hexylamine (HEA)) were applied for the modification of poly (tannic acid) (PTA) coating on the silicon wafer and urea surface. The wettability of coatings on silicon wafers were studied and nutrient release of APTA coated fertilizers were characterized in water and soil. The nitrogen nutrient and water vapor permeability coefficient of coatings were characterisized and the mathematical model for predicting the release of nutrients in soil. The alkyl chain length of alkylamine is demonstrated to play a crucial part in controlling the wettability. The rate of nutrient release increases in the order of ODA-PTA

Halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) is a promising candidate material for future high efficiency solar cells, while suffering from low stability that hinders their commercial applications. Here, we investigated the microscopic mechanisms underlying the photovoltaic degradation behaviors in MAPbI3 based solar cells, by using a time sequence photoconductive atomic force microscope spectroscopic (pcAFMs) in a moist environment. From the evolution of pcAFM maps, one can see two distinguished different evolution stages, the initial inter-diffusion stage that increases the overall photocurrent at the first few hours, which is followed by a decomposition stage that leads to the continuous decline of photocurrents with elongated durations. Moreover, an estimated lifetime map was also derived, which offers an overview insight into the different microscopic degradation mechanisms. In particular, some major decomposition mechanisms have been revealed, including an overall slow decomposition in all the grains, fast spreading of initial failure region, as well as newly formed failure regions occurring at grain junctions. The unveiling of these mechanisms might help improve the performance of halide perovskite solar cells, and provides a paradigmatic example for probing the microscopic photovoltaic mechanisms by using the powerful pcAFM technique.
