This paper examines the dynamic impact of world pandemic uncertainty on the crash risk of international stock markets. The results show world pandemic uncertainty has a positive impact on the crash risk. The effect is largest in the first quarter and significantly fades away in the following three quarters after the shock. Our results are robust for developed and emerging markets and for alternative measures of crash risk and world pandemic uncertainty.

PurposeThis paper investigates the relationship between institutional ownership and idiosyncratic volatility in Chinese and the USA stock markets and explores the potential explanations.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, the authors use the panel data regressions and the dynamic tests of two-way Granger causality in the panel VAR model to examine the relationship between institutional ownership and idiosyncratic volatility in Chinese and the USA stock markets.FindingsThe authors find that the institutional ownership in the Chinese (the USA) stock market is significantly and positively (negatively) related to idiosyncratic volatility through various tests. This paper indicates that institutional investors in the USA are more prudent and risk-averse, while the Chinese institutional investors are not because of high risk-bearing capacity.Originality/valueThis paper deepens the authors’ understanding on the relationship between institutional ownership and idiosyncratic volatility and in the USA and the Chinese stock markets. Objective: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Loquat Qingfei Yin (LQFY) in the treatment of acne. Methods: Using computer retrieval, comprehensive collection of the full text database of Chinese journals till December 2020 (CNKI), Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform (Wanfang), Viper Database (VIP), PubMed, Cochrane Library, Medline were included in the LQFY addition or subtraction treatment of acne randomized controlled trial (RCT). Screening of the literatures included in the Note Express 3.2.0. Assessment of the risk of bias in trials using Cochrane collaboration tools, and used Rev Man 5.3 to evaluate the curative effect. Results: 25 RCT, all in Chinese, there were 2257 cases. Of the 1216 cases who were treated, control group was 1041 cases. A random effect model was used for Meta analysis. Background and Purpose: Whether imaging parameters would independently predict stroke recurrence in low-risk minor ischemic stroke (MIS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA) according to traditional score system (such as ABCD 2 score, which was termed on the basis of the initials of the five factors: age, blood pressure, clinical features, duration, diabetes) remains unclear. We sought to evaluate the association between imaging parameters and 1-year stroke recurrence in patients with TIA or MIS in different risk stratum stratified by ABCD 2 score. Methods: We included patients with TIA and MIS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score ≤3) with complete baseline vessel and brain imaging data from the Third China National Stroke Registry III. Patients were categorized into different risk groups based on ABCD 2 score (low risk, 0–3; moderate risk, 4–5; and high risk, 6–7). The primary outcome was stroke recurrence within 1 year. Multivariable Cox proportional-hazards regression models were used to assess whether imaging parameters (large artery stenosis, infarction number) were independently associated with stroke recurrence. Results: Of the 7140 patients included, 584 patients experienced stroke recurrence within 1 year. According to the ABCD 2 score, large artery stenosis was associated with higher stroke recurrence in both low-risk (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.746 [95% CI, 1.200–2.540]) and moderate-risk group (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.326 [95% CI, 1.042–1.687]) but not in the high-risk group ( P >0.05). Patients with multiple acute infarctions or single acute infarction had a higher risk of recurrent stroke than those with no infarction in both low- and moderate-risk groups, but not in the high-risk group. Conclusions: Large artery stenosis and infarction number were independent predictors of 1-year stroke recurrence in low-moderate risk but not in high-risk patients with TIA or MIS stratified by ABCD 2 score. This finding emphasizes the importance of early brain and vascular imaging evaluation for risk stratification in patients with TIA or MIS.

The study aimed to investigate potential mechanisms for the anti-hypertensive effects of RVPSL on spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) using a non-targeted metabonomic approach. In this study, UPLC/MS-based non-targeted metabolomics was performed to discover metabolite variation of serum in SHRs with RVPSL treatment. As a result, the serum metabolites of SHRs that were administered RVPSL for four weeks exhibited distinct alterations. Nine potential biomarkers, i.e., choline, adenosine, adrenic acid, L-tryptophan, niacinamide, glycocholic acid, propiolic acid, D-glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, and phosphoglycolic acid, were significantly altered, which were mainly involved in lipid metabolism, vitamin and amino acid metabolism, purine metabolism, the MAPK signaling pathway, and the renin-angiotensin system. This study suggested that RVPSL potentially exerted potent effects of alleviating hypertension in the SHRs mainly via integrated regulations of metabolism and production of choline, L-tryptophan, nicotinamide, and adenosine.

In this paper, I investigate the effect of financial sector development on the growth volatility by using the data of 50 countries. The empirical results show that the aggregate growth volatility declines from 1997 to 2014 in the global perspective while the advanced countries have much smaller growth volatility than the developing countries. Using the dynamic panel threshold model, I find that financial sector development significantly reduces growth volatility, especially in its lower regime. Besides, financial sector development magnifies the shock of inflation volatility towards growth volatility in its higher regime. My results reveal the importance to keep the financial sector development in one optimal level, which is beneficial to reduce aggregate fluctuations and dampen the inflation shocks.

This paper investigates the impact of institutional quality on trade costs across 133 countries during 1995–2014. The results show that good institutional quality significantly reduces the three types of trade costs, that is, total trade costs, trade costs of agricultural goods, and trade costs of manufactured goods. Furthermore, the effect of institutional quality is significant in reducing trade costs with regard to the different trading country pairs, the different subperiods, the components of institutional quality, and the endogeneity issue. This paper contributes to the literature by confirming a significant and negative relationship between institutional quality and trade costs from a global perspective.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an important long-term development plan in China. The initiative aims at expanding international markets and resolving the domestic steel overcapacity. This paper applies the dynamic model averaging and dynamic model selection estimation techniques to investigate the determinants for steel consumption, forecast steel consumption, and explore whether the BRI can resolve the steel overcapacity in China. In terms of the in-sample regression analysis, the results show that the demand of countries along the BRI is significantly and positively related to the steel consumption in China. In the out-of-sample predictability after 2014, the BRI would gradually resolve the steel overcapacity in China. It is predicted that by the end of 2020, China will be left with between only 32.1 and 58 million tons of crude steel.

Previous work has shown that egg white-derived peptide QIGLF has significant in vivo antihypertensive activity. This study aimed to clarify the antihypertensive mechanisms of QIGLF on spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) by a serum proteomic approach. Here, the tandem mass tag (TMT) quantitative proteomic was performed to discover serum protein changes in SHRs with QIGLF. As a result, SHRs with 4 weeks of QIGLF treatment have distinct serum protein expression profiles by principal component and Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis. Based on Gene Ontology (GO) annotation, oxygen transport and organelle fusion were found to be a regulated major biological process. The angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptide QIGLF derived from egg white was shown to have significant in vivo antihypertensive effects in our previous study, but the intervention mechanisms at the metabolic level are still unclear. The UPLC-QTOF/MS-based untargeted metabolomics approach was used to clarify the potential antihypertensive mechanisms of QIGLF in the serum of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Multivariate statistical analysis showed a clear difference in the metabolite profiles between the QIGLF and model groups. The results suggested that eight potential biomarkers were identified, that is, adrenic acid, ursodeoxycholic acid, glycocholic acid, taurocholic acid, tryptophan, acetylindoxyl, tyrosine, and 2-phenylethanol, which were mainly involved in aromatic amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism, biosynthesis of bile acid, and biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids. QIGLF might exert antihypertensive effects by improving endothelial dysfunction. This study provides a theoretical basis for future research and application of ACE inhibitory peptides in the prevention and improvement of hypertension.

This study aimed to evaluate prognostic parameters associated with favorable clinical prognosis and assess the feasibility and safety of three different treatment strategies in patients with acute intracranial vertebrobasilar artery occlusion (VBAO). A total of 159 patients with acute VBAO at 3 stroke centers between September 2015 and October 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Eighty-nine patients underwent mechanical thrombectomy (MT) alone, 43 underwent MT with additional rescue angioplasty, and 27 underwent primary balloon angioplasty (without or with stenting). In patients treated with primary or rescue balloon angioplasty (without or with stenting), a low-dose intra-arterial tirofiban injection was used. The reperfusion status was assessed after the procedure, and the functional outcome was assessed at 90-day follow-up. The baseline characteristics and 90-day prognosis of three different treatment subgroups were comparatively analyzed. Overall, successful reperfusion and a favorable outcome were achieved in 96.86% (154/159) and 46.54% (74/159) patients, respectively. The onset to puncture time (461.96 min vs 603.59 min, P = 0.000), procedure time (64.12 min vs 70.47 min, P = 0.007), and onset to reperfusion time (526.08 min vs 674.47 min, P = 0.000) were significantly shorter in patients with favorable outcomes than in those with poor outcomes. Among different endovascular treatment subgroups, no significant differences were found in successful reperfusion and 90-day outcome. Low-dose tirofiban did not increase the risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and the 90-day mortality in patients with acute VBAO. Individualized endovascular treatment strategy for selected patients with acute VBAO could achieve satisfactory reperfusion rate and favorable prognosis.

Background Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is one of the leading causes of mortality and long-term disability worldwide. Our study aims to clarify the role of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) subclasses in the occurrence of AIS and develop a risk xprediction model based on these characteristics to identify high-risk people. Methods Five hundred and sixty-six patients with AIS and 197 non-AIS controls were included in this study. Serum lipids and other baseline characteristics including fasting blood glucose (GLU), serum creatinine (Scr), and blood pressure were investigated in relation to occurrence of AIS. The LDL subfractions were classified and measured with the Lipoprint System by a polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis technique. Results Levels of LDL-3, LDL-4 and LDL-5 subclasses were significantly higher in the AIS group compared to the non-AIS group and lower level of LDL-1 was prevalent in the AIS patients. Consistently, Spearman correlation coefficient demonstrated that sd-demonevels, especially LDL-3 and LDL-4 levels, were significantly positively correlated with AIS. Furthermore, there is a significant positive correlation between small dense LDL (sd-LDL, that is LDL-3 to 7) levels and serum lipids including total cholesterol (TC), Low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and Triglyceride (TG). Increased LDL-3 and LDL-4 as well as decreased LDL-1 and LDL-2 were correlated to the occurrence of AIS, even in the people with normal LDL-C levels. A new prediction model including 12 variables can accurately predict the AIS risk in Chinese patients (AUC = 0.82 ± 0.04). Conclusions Levels of LDL subclasses should be considered in addition to serum LDL-C in assessment and management of AIS. A new prediction model based on clinical variables including LDL subtractions can help clinicians identify high of AIS, even in the people with norm.

While it is widely accepted that monetary factors play an integral role in macroeconomic outcomes, Bernanke's () seminal paper highlights the significant role that non‐monetary financial factors played in the downturn and recovery (or lack thereof) from the Great Depression of the 1930s in the USA. This paper explores whether Bernanke's findings can be applied to the recovery from the East Asian financial crisis of 1997–98. We show that non‐monetary financial factors played an important role in how quickly East Asian nations recovered in the years following 1998. Unlike the US experience during the Great Depression, East Asian nations generally implemented positive non‐monetary financial reforms that helped speed recovery. We find that factors correlated with a healthy banking system had a significant, positive effect upon economic growth from 1999 to 2006 and that bank system health was particularly important in those East Asian countries that had traditionally weaker banking systems. Our findings suggest that the reform of financial institutions—such as strengthening financial sector supervision and implementing prudent regulations—should be given more attention when policies are devised to help economies recover from financial crises.

PurposeWith this paper, the authors aim to investigate the drivers behind three of the most important aspects of the Chinese real estate market, housing prices, housing rent and new construction. At the same time, the authors perform a comprehensive empirical test of the popular 4-quadrant model by Wheaton and DiPasquale.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, the authors utilize panel cointegration estimation methods and data from 35 Chinese metropolitan areas.FindingsThe results indicate that the 4-quadrant model is well suited to explain the determinants of housing prices. However, the same is not true regarding housing rent and new construction suggesting a more complex theoretical framework may be required for a well-rounded explanation of real estate markets.Originality/valueIt is the first time that panel data are used to estimate rent and new construction for China. Also, it is the first time a comprehensive test of the Wheaton and DiPasquale 4-quadrant model is performed using data from China.

We estimate global return autocorrelation by using the quantile autocorrelation model and investigate its determinants across 43 stock markets from 1980 to 2013. Although our results document a decline in autocorrelation across the entire sample period for all countries, return autocorrelation is significantly larger in emerging markets than in developed markets. The results further document that larger and liquid stock markets have lower return autocorrelation. We also find that price limits in most emerging markets result in higher return autocorrelation. We show that the disclosure requirement, public enforcement, investor psychology, and market characteristics significantly affect return autocorrelation. Our results document that investors from different cultural backgrounds and regulation regimes react differently to corporate disclosers, which affects return autocorrelation.

This paper explores the role mutual fund herding plays on the return comovement in Chinese equities. The results show that mutual fund herding significantly reduces the return comovement among Chinese stocks, providing evidence for the existence of a rational herding behavior by mutual funds. We find that the negative effect of mutual fund herding on return comovement is larger for stocks with low volatility and high mutual fund ownership. We also observe that mutual fund herding has a stronger impact on return comovement after the full-implementation of the Split-Share Structure Reform in China in 2012 which allowed all shares to be traded freely among all market participants.

Background Trisodium phosphate (TSP), generally recognized as safe (GRAS), could control postharvest diseases and maintain fruit quality. However, changes of fruit quality and sucrose metabolism in harvested jujube after TSP treatment remain largely unknown. In the current study, jujube fruit (cv. sanxing) was used to study the effects of TSP on storage quality and sucrose metabolism during storage at 20 ± 2 °C with 40-50% relative humidity (RH). Results The results showed that 0.5 g L-1 TSP treatment reduced weight loss and reduced sugar content, suppressed the reduction of fruit firmness, maintained ascorbic acid (AsA) content and inhibited respiratory rate of jujube fruit. In addition, TSP treatment also reduced acid invertase (AI) and neutral invertase (NI) activities in sucrose metabolism in jujube fruit. Sucrose synthase-cleavage (SS-c), sucrose synthase-synthesis (SS-s) and sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) activities were also suppressed by TSP treatment. Conclusion Treatment with TSP could effectively reduce enzymes activities in sucrose metabolism and maintain storage quality of jujube fruit during storage. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Using country-level data on 47 global markets, this paper examines the stabilizing effects of pension funds vs. mutual funds on country-specific market risk. We find that mutual funds have a significantly negative effect on idiosyncratic volatility in developed markets, but this role becomes insignificant in emerging markets. In contrast, pension funds significantly reduce country-specific market risk in both developed and emerging markets, with a much stronger stabilizing effect. The prudence of pension funds subsumes the macrofactor effects on market risk and drives away the effects of mutual funds in emerging markets. Our results suggest that the steady growth of pension funds can be a viable strategy to improve a country’s financial health, especially for emerging markets.

This paper applies the threshold quantile autoregressive model to study stock return autocorrelations and predictability in the Chinese stock market from 2005 to 2014. The results show that the Shanghai A-share stock index has significant negative autocorrelations in the lower regime and has significant positive autocorrelations in the higher regime. It attributes that Chinese investors overreact and underreact in two different states. These results are similar when we employ individual stocks. Besides, we investigate stock return autocorrelations by different stock characteristics, including liquidity, volatility, market to book ratio and investor sentiment. The results show autocorrelations are significantly large in the middle and higher regimes of market to book ratio and volatility. Psychological biases can result into return autocorrelations by using investor sentiment proxy since autocorrelations are significantly larger in the middle and higher regime of investor sentiment. The empirical results show that predictability exists in the Chinese stock market.

This paper uses a panel smoothed quantile regression model to examine the asymmetric effects of monetary policy on the business cycle by using data for 40 countries from 2005 to 2016. The empirical results show that monetary policy is pro-cyclical and amplifies the business cycle. The positive effects of monetary policy are larger in the emerging countries and are larger during economic expansions than recessions. The findings are robust to alternative panel quantile regression methods. This paper contributes to the exploration of distinct roles of monetary policy can play in the different phases of the business cycle.

This paper investigates the effects of Chinese financial and fiscal policies designed to counter the worldwide Great Recession of 2008. We examine how policies designed to increase bank credit and health (i.e., asset liquidity, capital adequacy ratio, profitability, and bad loan ratio) influenced firm-level output, employment and investment. We also explore the impact of China’s expansionary fiscal policy with regard to these firm-level variables. We find that the policy effects varied based on firm-level characteristics such as size, liability ratio, profitability, ownership and the industry in which the firm operates. With respect to the dynamic effects, our results suggest that Chinese financial and fiscal policies were generally effective in the short run, but their positive impacts ceased within two years.
