Highlights Polysaccharide-based microneedles are novel and emerging tools for ocular drug delivery and the research on the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases is advancing at a fast pace. Microneedle devices constructed from polysaccharide molecules derived from ocular tissue have the potential to significantly enhance the efficiency of clinical treatments and improve patient compliance with therapeutic regimens. Guided by our vast clinical experience, this is the first review collates the cutting-edge scientific findings from the interdisciplinary field combining natural macromolecules and ophthalmology.

In this study, the 16 mm thick aluminum alloy was successfully welded using variable polarity plasma arc (VPPA) keyhole welding. The microstructure and microhardness distributions of the weld were systematically measured along its thickness and width. To evaluate tensile strengths along the weld thickness, tensile specimens were divided into upper, middle, and lower sections. The surface temperature distribution of the weld pool, along with the temperature profile through its thickness, was measured using thermometers and thermocouples. Numerical simulations were employed to calculate the pressure oscillations along the keyhole boundary and to analyze the temperature and flow field distributions of the VPPA. The findings initially revealed a homogeneous and refined microstructure distribution within the weld seam. The weld zone exhibited higher microhardness compared to the base metal (BM). The weld demonstrated a tensile strength of 187.86 MPa and an elongation of 24.76%, corresponding to 95.57% and 78.65% of the BM, respectively. The tensile strengths and elongations of the upper, middle, and lower sections displayed a similar distribution to that of the entire weld. The mechanism underlying the microstructure distribution of the weld was significantly influenced by the temperature distribution of the weld pool, dynamic pressure oscillations in the mushy zone, and fluid flow of the weld pool. Specifically, the mechanism whereby pressure oscillations fracture existing nuclei and generate multiple new nuclei has been proposed to explain the refined microstructure distribution. These findings provide crucial insights for optimizing VPPA keyhole welding technology, ensuring stable and high-quality welding of thick aluminum alloys.

Objective RNA epigenetic modifications play an important role in regulating immune response of mammals. Bovine mastitis induced by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a threat to the health of dairy cattle. There are numerous RNA modifications, and how these modification-associated enzymes systematically coordinate their immunomodulatory effects during bovine mastitis is not well reported. Therefore, the role of common RNA modification-related genes (RMRGs) in bovine S. aureus mastitis was investigated in this study. Methods In total, 80 RMRGs were selected for this study. Four public RNA-seq data sets about bovine S. aureus mastitis were collected and one additional RNA-seq data set was generated by this study. Firstly, quantitative trait locus (QTL) database, transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS) database and differential expression analyses were employed to characterize the potential functions of selected enzyme genes in bovine S. aureus mastitis. Correlation analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) were used to further investigate the relationships of RMRGs from different types at the mRNA expression level. Interference experiments targeting the m6A demethylase FTO and utilizing public MeRIP-seq dataset from bovine Mac-T cells were used to investigate the potential interaction mechanisms among various RNA modifications. Results Bovine QTL and TWAS database in cattle revealed associations between RMRGs and immune-related complex traits. S. aureus challenged and control groups were effectively distinguished by principal component analysis based on the expression of selected RMRGs. WGCNA and correlation analysis identified modules grouping different RMRGs, with highly correlated mRNA expression. The m6A modification gene FTO showed significant effects on the expression of m6A and other RMRGs (such as NSUN2, CPSF2, and METTLE), indicating complex co-expression relationships among different RNA modifications in the regulation of bovine S. aureus mastitis. Conclusion RNA epigenetic modification genes play important immunoregulatory roles in bovine S. aureus mastitis, and there are extensive interactions of mRNA expression among different RMRGs. It is necessary to investigate the interactions between RNA modification genes regulating complex traits in the future.

Abstract Background Characterization of regulatory variants (e.g., gene expression quantitative trait loci, eQTL; gene splicing QTL, sQTL) is crucial for biologically interpreting molecular mechanisms underlying loci associated with complex traits. However, regulatory variants in dairy cattle, particularly in specific biological contexts (e.g., distinct lactation stages), remain largely unknown. In this study, we explored regulatory variants in whole blood samples collected during early to mid-lactation (22–150 days after calving) of 101 Holstein cows and analyzed them to decipher the regulatory mechanisms underlying complex traits in dairy cattle. Results We identified 14,303 genes and 227,705 intron clusters expressed in the white blood cells of 101 cattle. The average heritability of gene expression and intron excision ratio explained by cis-SNPs is 0.28 ± 0.13 and 0.25 ± 0.13, respectively. We identified 23,485 SNP-gene expression pairs and 18,166 SNP-intron cluster pairs in dairy cattle during early to mid-lactation. Compared with the 2,380,457 cis-eQTLs reported to be present in blood in the Cattle Genotype-Tissue Expression atlas (CattleGTEx), only 6,114 cis-eQTLs (P 0.6). In order to further improve the utility of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote-sensing for quickly and accurately monitoring the growth of winter wheat under film mulching, this study examined the treatments of ridge mulching, ridge–furrow full mulching, and flat cropping full mulching in winter wheat. Based on the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) method, four agronomic parameters (leaf area index, above-ground biomass, plant height, and leaf chlorophyll content) were used to calculate the comprehensive growth evaluation index (CGEI) of the winter wheat, and 14 visible and near-infrared spectral indices were calculated using spectral purification technology to process the remote-sensing image data of winter wheat obtained by multispectral UAV. Four machine learning algorithms, partial least squares, support vector machines, random forests, and artificial neural network networks (ANN), were used to build the winter wheat growth monitoring model under film mulching, and accuracy evaluation and mapping of the spatial and temporal distribution of winter wheat growth status were carried out. The results showed that the CGEI of winter wheat under film mulching constructed using the FCE method could objectively and comprehensively evaluate the crop growth status. The accuracy of remote-sensing inversion of the CGEI based on the ANN model was higher than for the individual agronomic parameters, with a coefficient of determination of 0.75, a root mean square error of 8.40, and a mean absolute value error of 6.53. Spectral purification could eliminate the interference of background effects caused by mulching and soil, effectively improving the accuracy of the remote-sensing inversion of winter wheat under film mulching, with the best inversion effect achieved on the ridge–furrow full mulching area after spectral purification. The results of this study provide a theoretical reference for the use of UAV remote-sensing to monitor the growth status of winter wheat with film mulching.

Objective Abnormally increased somatic cell counts (SCCs) in milk is usually a sign of bovine subclinical mastitis. Mutual interaction between the host and its associated microbiota plays an important role in developing such diseases. The main objective of this study was to explore the difference between cows with elevated SCCs and healthy cattle from the perspective of host-microbe interplay. Methods A total of 31 milk samples and 23 bovine peripheral blood samples were collected from Holstein dairy cattle to conduct an integrated analysis of transcriptomic and metagenomics. Results The results showed that Ralstonia and Sphingomonas were enriched in cows with subclinical mastitis. The relative abundance of the two bacteria was positively correlated with the expression level of bovine transcobalamin 1 and uridine phosphorylase 1 encoding gene. Moreover, functional analysis revealed a distinct alternation in some important microbial biological processes. Conclusion These results reveal the relative abundance of Ralstonia and Sphingomonas other than common mastitis-causing pathogens varied from healthy cows to those with subclinical mastitis and might be associated with elevated SCCs. Potential association was observed between bovine milk microbiota composition and the transcriptional pattern of some genes, thus providing new insights to understand homeostasis of bovine udder.

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) speed control systems with conventional linear active disturbance rejection control (CLADRC) strategy encounter issues regarding the coupling between dynamic response and disturbance suppression and have poor performance in suppressing complex nonlinear disturbances. In order to address these issues, this paper proposes an improved two-degree-of-freedom LADRC (TDOF-LADRC) strategy, which can enhance the disturbance rejection performance of the system while decoupling entirely the system's dynamic and anti-disturbance performance to boost the system robustness and simplify controller parameter tuning. PMSM models that consider total disturbances are developed to design the TDOF-LADRC speed controller accurately. Moreover, to evaluate the control performance of the TDOF-LADRC strategy, its stability is proven, and the influence of each controller parameter on the system control performance is analyzed. Based on it, a comparison is made between the disturbance observation ability and anti-disturbance performance of TDOF-LADRC and CLADRC to prove the superiority of TDOF-LADRC in rejecting disturbances. Finally, experiments are performed on a 750 W PMSM experimental platform, and the results demonstrate that the proposed TDOF-LADRC exhibits the properties of two degrees of freedom and improves the disturbance rejection performance of the PMSM system.

The photogenerated charge carrier separation and transportation of inside photocathodes can greatly influence the performance of photoelectrochemical (PEC) H2 production devices. Coupling TiO2 with p-type semiconductors to construct heterojunction structures is one of the most widely used strategies to facilitate charge separation and transportation. However, the band position of TiO2 could not perfectly match with all p-type semiconductors. Here, taking antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) as an example, a rational strategy was developed by introducing a viologen electron transfer mediator (ETM) containing polymeric film (poly-1,1′-dially-[4,4′-bipyridine]-1,1′-diium, denoted as PV2+) at the interface between Sb2Se3 and TiO2 to regulate the energy band alignment, which could inhibit the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers of interfaces. With Pt as a catalyst, the constructed Sb2Se3/PV2+/TiO2/Pt photocathode showed a superior PEC hydrogen generation activity with a photocurrent density of −18.6 mA cm−2 vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a half-cell solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (HC-STH) of 1.54% at 0.17 V vs. RHE, which was much better than that of the related Sb2Se3/TiO2/Pt photocathode without PV2+ (−9.8 mA cm−2, 0.51% at 0.10 V vs. RHE).

As a comprehensive and systematic approach to innovation, green innovation has become an important tool for reducing haze and carbon intensity. Based on balanced panel data at the city level in China, we use the two-way fixed-effects model to explore the impact of urban green innovation on haze pollution and carbon emission intensity. The conclusions are as follows: 1) The influence of green innovation on carbon emissions intensity and haze pollution exhibits a significant inverted U-shaped relationship. 2) We explore the mediating channels through which green innovation affects carbon emissions intensity and haze pollution. Specifically, the inverted U-shaped impacts of green innovation on energy intensity and resource dependence. 3) The inverted U-shaped relationship between green innovation and carbon emissions intensity holds for both resource-based and non-resource-based cities. 4) The U-shaped relationships, whether regarding carbon emissions intensity or haze pollution, are only applicable to non-environmental priority cities. This paper offers valuable insights for the formulation of more effective environmental management measures by governments.

Background: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood infectious disease caused by a variety of enteroviruses (EVs). To explore the epidemiological characteristics and etiology of HFMD in Zhengzhou, China, we conducted a systematic analysis of HFMD surveillance data from Zhengzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention from January 2009 to December 2021 (https://wjw.zhengzhou.gov.cn/). Methods: Surveillance data were collected from Zhengzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention from January 2009 to December 2021 (https://wjw.zhengzhou.gov.cn/). Cases were analyzed according to the time of onset, type of diagnosis, characteristics, viral serotype, and epidemiological trends. Results: We found that the primary causative agent responsible for the HFMD outbreaks in Zhengzhou was Enterovirus A71 (EVA-71) (48.56%) before 2014. After 2015, other EVs gradually became the dominant strains (57.68%). The data revealed that the HFMD epidemics in Zhengzhou displayed marked seasonality, with major peaks occurring from April to June, followed by secondary peaks from October to November, except in 2020. Both the severity and case-fatality ratio of HFMD decreased following the COVID-19 pandemic (severity ‰: 13.46 vs. 0.17; case-fatality ‰: 0.21 vs. 0, respectively). Most severe cases were observed in patients aged 1 year and below, accounting for 45.81%. Conclusions: Overall, the incidence rate of HFMD decreased in Zhengzhou following the introduction of the EVA-71 vaccine in 2016. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that HFMD prevalence continues to exhibit a distinct seasonal pattern and periodicity, and the occurrence of other EV infections poses a new challenge for children's health.

Transmembrane drug transporters can be important determinants of the pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety profiles of drugs. To investigate the potential cooperative and/or counteracting interplay of OATP1A/1B/2B1 uptake transporters and ABCB1 and ABCG2 efflux transporters in physiology and pharmacology, we generated a new mouse model (Bab12), deficient for Slco1a/1b, Slco2b1, Abcb1a/1b and Abcg2. Bab12 mice were viable and fertile. We compared wild-type, Slco1a/1b/2b1-/-, Abcb1a/1b;Abcg2-/- and Bab12 strains. Endogenous plasma conjugated bilirubin levels ranked as follows: wild-type = Abcb1a/1b;Abcg2-/- << Slco1a/1b/2b1-/- < Bab12 mice. Plasma levels of rosuvastatin and fexofenadine were elevated in Slco1a/1b/2b1-/- and Abcb1a/1b;Abcg2-/- mice compared to wild-type, and dramatically increased in Bab12 mice. Although systemic exposure of larotrectinib and repotrectinib was substantially increased in the separate multidrug transporter knockout strains, no additive effects were observed in the combination Bab12 mice. Significantly higher plasma exposure of fluvastatin and pravastatin was only found in Slco1a/1b/2b1-deficient mice. However, noticeable transport by Slco1a/1b/2b1 and Abcb1a/1b and Abcg2 across the BBB was observed for fluvastatin and pravastatin, respectively, by comparing Bab12 mice with Abcb1a/1b;Abcg2-/- or Slco1a/1b/2b1-/- mice. Quite varying behavior in plasma exposure of erlotinib and its metabolites was observed among these strains. Bab12 mice revealed that Abcb1a/1b and/or Abcg2 can contribute to conjugated bilirubin elimination when Slco1a/1b/2b1 are absent. Our results suggest that the interplay of Slco1a/1b/2b1, Abcb1a/1b, and Abcg2 could markedly affect the pharmacokinetics of some, but not all drugs and metabolites. The Bab12 mouse model will represent a useful tool for optimizing drug development and clinical application, including efficacy and safety.

The flexible job scheduling problem with automated guided vehicles (FJSP-AGVs) is a simplified model of some real manufacturing industries. It contains three strongly coupled subproblems: operation sequences assignment, machine selection, and automatic guided vehicle selection, leading to a huge solution space. Its several unresolved challenges, i.e., problem model and algorithmic designing, persist. Therefore, we first adopt the sequence-based modeling method to establish a mixed-integer linear programming model with makespan, and its correctness is verified by using the Gurobi solver. Subsequently, a multi-strategy-driven genetic algorithm (Mult_stra_GA) is proposed based on the implicit features of FJSP-AGVs. In Mult_stra_GA, for the operation sequence (OS) and the machine assignment (MS) subproblems, we design three targeted strategies, i.e., two layer-based encoding and decoding strategy, a multiple heuristics-based initialization strategy, double crossover, and dual mutation operators. Meanwhile, the problem-specific diversity checking and restart strategies are introduced to avoid Mult_stra_GA falling into local optima. Finally, we conduct experiments on four well-known benchmarks. Through the statistical analysis, the outcomes demonstrate that the Mult_stra_GA algorithm exhibits efficacy when contrasted with other advanced algorithms.

Abstract The realization of compact and efficient broadband mid-infrared (MIR) lasers has enormous impacts in promoting MIR spectroscopy for various important applications. A number of well-designed waveguide platforms have been demonstrated for MIR supercontinuum and frequency comb generations based on cubic nonlinearities, but unfortunately third-order nonlinear response is inherently weak. Here, we propose and demonstrate for the first time a χ (2) micrometer waveguide platform based on birefringence phase matching for long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) laser generation with a high quantum efficiency. In a ZnGeP2-based waveguide platform, an octave-spanning spectrum covering 5–11 μm is generated through optical parametric generation (OPG). A quantum conversion efficiency of 74% as a new record in LWIR single-pass parametric processes is achieved. The threshold energy is measured as ~616 pJ, reduced by more than 1-order of magnitude as compared to those of MIR OPGs in bulk media. Our prototype micro-waveguide platform could be extended to other χ (2) birefringence crystals and trigger new frontiers of MIR integrated nonlinear photonics.

To reveal the influence mechanism of mining speed on roof fracture-type rockburst, the Brazilian split technique combined with acoustic emission monitoring technology was employed to study the effects of loading rates on the tensile failure characteristics and acoustic emission parameters of coal series sandstone. The linear relationship between the tensile strength of the samples and the change rate of tensile stress was determined. The mining speed was introduced into the mechanical model of initial and cyclic fracture of the hard roof, and the quantitative relationship between the maximum rate of change of tensile stress within the hard roof and the mining speed was derived. Based on this, a computational model for the bending elastic energy of the hard roof during initial and cyclic fractures, considering the mining speed, was established. The main findings are as follows: As the loading rate increases, the distribution range of acoustic emission energy in sandstone Brazilian split samples before failure widens, with a significant rise in acoustic emission ring-down counts and energy at failure. At lower loading rates, acoustic emission events primarily occur near sample failure, whereas at higher rates, they mostly happen in the early loading stage. The higher the mining speed, the less opportunity there is for internal micro-fractures to develop and expand before the hard roof fractures, which macroscopically results in increased tensile strength and a larger amount of energy released at the moment of fracture. Bending elastic energy rises approximately linearly with mining speed, and the thicker the hard roof, the more sensitive the bending elastic energy is to changes in mining speed. This effect is even more pronounced during cyclic fractures. Optimizing mining speed is crucial for preventing roof fracture-type rockbursts, especially in mining workfaces with thick and hard roofs.

Centrifugal pumps are important equipment in industrial production, and their safe and reliable operation is of great significance to water supply and industrial safety. During the use of centrifugal pumps, faults such as bearing damage, blade wear, shaft imbalance, shaft misalignment and water hammer often occur. Among them, although water hammer faults occur at a low frequency, they are difficult to monitor and pose significant risks to valve and pipeline interfaces. This article analyzes the causes, mechanisms and phenomena of water hammer faults in centrifugal pumps, designs a monitoring method to effectively monitor the vibration signal of the centrifugal pumps, extracts vibration characteristics to determine and record water hammer events, designs monitoring and diagnostic models for the edge layer and server side, and establishes an experimental verification testing system. The test results show that, under the conditions of simulating water hammer faults, after high-pass filtering of the collected vibration data, the kurtosis index, pulse index and margin index all exceed twice the threshold, and both sensors emit water hammer alarms. The designed data acquisition method can capture water hammer signals in a timely manner, and the analysis model can automatically identify water hammer faults based on existing fault knowledge and rules. This fully demonstrates the scientific and effective nature of the proposed centrifugal pump fault monitoring method and system, which is of great significance for ensuring the safe operation and improving the design of centrifugal pumps.

The "Three Rural Issues", encompass challenges related to agriculture, farmer, and rural area, which hold significant importance in driving comprehensive rural revitalization efforts in China. Farmer entrepreneurship, as a crucial means to enhance productivity, create job opportunities, and increase residents' income, has gradually become a key driving force in promoting rural revitalization in the new stage of development in China. With the rapid development of rural e-commerce, farmer entrepreneurship has encountered new opportunities. This study utilizes the 2020 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) data and employs a structural equation model (SEM) to analyze the direct impact of rural e-commerce participation on farmer entrepreneurial behavior, considering factors such as human capital, social capital, and network infrastructure. This study further explores the indirect effects and mechanisms of e-commerce participation as a mediating variable and analyzes the impact and mechanisms on agricultural entrepreneurship behavior. The findings are as follows: (1) E-commerce participation significantly promotes farmer entrepreneurial behavior; (2) E-commerce participation as a mediating variable has a positive indirect effect on the relationship between social trust, network infrastructure, human capital, and farmer entrepreneurial behavior; (3) E-commerce participation has a significant positive influence on farmer entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector, and farmers with higher levels of network infrastructure and human capital have a higher probability of choosing agricultural entrepreneurship under the influence of e-commerce participation. Finally, this study provides policy recommendations in terms of infrastructure construction, entrepreneurial policy environment, and education level, aiming to optimize the situation of farmer entrepreneurship and contribute to the comprehensive promotion of rural revitalization.Overall, the research in this paper effectively combines theory and empirical evidence to outline the direct and indirect impact mechanisms of rural e-commerce participation on farmers' entrepreneurial behavior and agriculture-related entrepreneurial behavior and to test the effects of their impacts. First, most of the existing literature deals with farmers in individual sample areas, while the sample selected in this paper is farmers in the whole country, which is relatively more generalizable; second, most of the previous studies explore the level of e-commerce in the inter-provincial or county areas, while this paper expands the empirical study of rural e-commerce on the entrepreneurial behavior of farmers and the micro-period of agricultural entrepreneurial behavior, and focuses on the impacts of the e-commerce activities of farmers on their entrepreneurial behavior.

Ecological security is a critical guarantor of human security and indeed human survival and is closely associated with sustainable development. Yet exploration of ecological security assessment in alpine pastoral regions is lacking, and many studies have failed to perform validation analyses on ecological security assessment results, weakening the reliability of their assessment results. In this study, an ecosystem health-risk-services framework is developed to assess the ecological security of the Gannan alpine pastoral region (GAPR) on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau from 2000 to 2020. Then, the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) and high-resolution images are then introduced to verify and compare the results’ reliability. This study aims to explore the modernization level, dynamic distribution, and regional disparities of China from 2006 to 2020. Based on the concept of sustainable development and the concept of modernization in China, an evaluation index system for modernization is constructed. The improved CRITIC method is employed to calculate the weights of each index, and a modernization index model is used to characterize the level of modernization. The kernel density estimation method and the Dagum Gini coefficient are then applied to analyse the dynamic distribution and regional disparities of modernization across provinces in China. The research findings indicate that the modernization level has significantly improved at the national and regional levels during the observed period. However, different regions and provinces have experienced varying growth rates in modernization, highlighting significant spatial disparities. China's modernization level exhibits a pattern where provinces along the southeastern coastal line serve as the starting point and extend towards the inland regions, with the level of modernization decreasing as the distance from the coastline increases. Moreover, polarization phenomena are observed in the central and eastern regions.

Abstract Plant wearable sensors facilitate the real‐time monitoring of plant physiological status. In situ monitoring of the plant chlorophyll content over days can provide valuable information on the photosynthetic capacity, nitrogen content, and general plant health. However, it cannot be achieved by current chlorophyll measuring methods. Here, a miniaturized and plant‐wearable chlorophyll meter for rapid, non‐destructive, in situ, and long‐term chlorophyll monitoring is developed. The reflectance‐based chlorophyll sensor with 1.5 mm thickness and 0.2 g weight (1000 times lighter than the commercial chlorophyll meter), includes a light emitting diode (LED) and two symmetric photodetectors (PDs) on a flexible substrate, and is patched onto the leaf upper epidermis with a conformal light guiding layer. A chlorophyll content index (CCI) calculated based on the sensor shows a better linear relationship with the leaf chlorophyll content (r2 > 0.9) than the traditional chlorophyll meter. This meter can wirelessly communicate with a smartphone to monitor the leaf chlorophyll change under various stresses and indicate the unhealthy status of plants for long‐term application of plants under various stresses earlier than chlorophyll meter and naked‐eye observation. This wearable chlorophyll sensing patch is promising in smart and precision agriculture.

Taxanes are natural compounds for the treatment of lung cancer, but the molecular mechanism behind the effects is unclear. In the present study, through network pharmacology and molecular docking, the mechanism of the target and pathway of taxanes in the treatment of lung cancer was studied. The taxanes targets were determined by PubChem database, and an effective compounds-targets network was constructed. The GeneCards database was used to determine the disease targets of lung cancer, and the intersection of compound targets and disease targets was obtained. The Protein–Protein Interaction (PPI) network of the intersection targets was analyzed, and the PPI network was constructed by Cytoscape 3.6.0 software. The hub targets were screened according to the degree value, and the binding activity between taxanes and hub targets was verified by molecular docking. The results showed that eight taxane-active compounds and 444 corresponding targets were screened out, and 131 intersection targets were obtained after mapping with lung cancer disease targets. The hub targets obtained by PPI analysis were TP53, EGFR, and AKT1. Gene Ontology (GO) biological function enrichment analysis obtained 1795 biological process (BP) terms, 101 cellular component (CC) terms, and 164 molecular function (MF) terms. There were 179 signaling pathways obtained by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis. Twenty signaling pathways were screened out, mainly pathways in cancer, proteoglycans in cancer pathway, microRNAs in cancer pathway, and so on. Molecular docking shows that the binding energies of eight taxanes with TP53, EGFR, and AKT1 targets were less than −8.8 kcal/mol, taxanes acts on TP53, EGFR, and AKT1 targets through pathways in cancer, proteoglycans in cancer pathway and microRNAs in cancer pathway, and plays a role in treating lung cancer in biological functions such as protein binding, enzyme binding, and identical protein binding.

Abstract Background Folic acid is a water-soluble B vitamin (B9), which is closely related to the body’s immune and other metabolic pathways. The folic acid synthesized by rumen microbes has been unable to meet the needs of high-yielding dairy cows. The incidence rate of subclinical mastitis in dairy herds worldwide ranged between 25%~65% with no obvious symptoms, but it significantly causes a decrease in lactation and milk quality. Therefore, this study aims at exploring the effects of folic acid supplementation on the expression profile of lncRNAs, exploring the molecular mechanism by which lncRNAs regulate immunity in subclinical mastitic dairy cows. Results The analysis identified a total of 4384 lncRNA transcripts. Subsequently, differentially expressed lncRNAs in the comparison of two groups (SF vs. SC, HF vs. HC) were identified to be 84 and 55 respectively. Furthermore, the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and the KEGG enrichment analysis result showed that folic acid supplementation affects inflammation and immune response-related pathways. The two groups have few pathways in common. One important lncRNA MSTRG.11108.1 and its target genes (ICAM1, CCL3, CCL4, etc.) were involved in immune-related pathways. Finally, through integrated analysis of lncRNAs with GWAS data and animal QTL database, we found that differential lncRNA and its target genes could be significantly enriched in SNPs and QTLs related to somatic cell count (SCC) and mastitis, such as MSTRG.11108.1 and its target gene ICAM1, CXCL3, GRO1. Conclusions For subclinical mastitic cows, folic acid supplementation can significantly affect the expression of immune-related pathway genes such as ICAM1 by regulating lncRNAs MSTRG.11108.1, thereby affecting related immune phenotypes. Our findings laid a ground foundation for theoretical and practical application for feeding folic acid supplementation in subclinical mastitic cows.

Abstract Quantitative and multiparametric blood analysis is of great clinical importance in cardiovascular disease diagnosis. Although there are various methods to extract blood information, they often require invasive procedures, lack continuity, involve bulky instruments, or have complicated testing procedures. Flexible sensors can realize on-skin assessment of several vital signals, but generally exhibit limited function to monitor blood characteristics. Here, we report a flexible optoacoustic blood ‘stethoscope’ for noninvasive, multiparametric, and continuous cardiovascular monitoring, without requiring complicated procedures. The optoacoustic blood ‘stethoscope’ features the light delivery elements to illuminate blood and the piezoelectric acoustic elements to capture light-induced acoustic waves. We show that the optoacoustic blood ‘stethoscope’ can adhere to the skin for continuous and non-invasive in-situ monitoring of multiple cardiovascular biomarkers, including hypoxia, intravascular exogenous agent concentration decay, and hemodynamics, which can be further visualized with a tailored 3D algorithm. Demonstrations on both in-vivo animal trials and human subjects highlight the optoacoustic blood ‘stethoscope’‘s potential for cardiovascular disease diagnosis and prediction.

Abstract Electrocatalytic urea synthesis is an emerging alternative technology to the traditional energy-intensive industrial urea synthesis protocol. Novel strategies are urgently needed to promote the electrocatalytic C–N coupling process and inhibit the side reactions. Here, we report a CuWO4 catalyst with native bimetallic sites that achieves a high urea production rate (98.5 ± 3.2 μg h−1 mg−1 cat) for the co-reduction of CO2 and NO3 − with a high Faradaic efficiency (70.1 ± 2.4%) at −0.2 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the combination of stable intermediates of *NO2 and *CO increases the probability of C–N coupling and reduces the potential barrier, resulting in high Faradaic efficiency and low overpotential. This study provides a new perspective on achieving efficient urea electrosynthesis by stabilizing the key reaction intermediates, which may guide the design of other electrochemical systems for high-value C–N bond-containing chemicals.

A new method of Ultrasonic-Magnetic field coaxial hybrid GTAW (U-M-GTAW) was proposed in this paper to improve the joints properties by coaxially coupling ultrasonic vibration and magnetic field to the welding arc. The microstructure and mechanical properties of 304 stainless steel in the welded joints of GTAW, Ultrasonic-GTAW (U-GTAW), Magnetic field-GTAW (M-GTAW), and U-M-GTAW were compared and analyzed to clarify the mechanism of microstructure evolution and mechanical properties changes under the combined action of the ultrasonic and magnetic field. The results showed that the U-GTAW arc energy was increased and the grain size in the joint center was reduced by 25.7% compared to GTAW. The heat affected zone (HAZ) of the M-GTAW joint almost disappeared and the columnar crystals gradually transformed into equiaxed crystals, exhibiting the lowest texture strength. When ultrasonic and magnetic field were applied to GTAW together, the grain size of the U-M-GTAW joint center was reduced by 12.4% compared to GTAW, and the joint center was almost completely transformed into equiaxed crystals. The external energy fields all improved the mechanical properties of the joints, with the most significant improvement in U-M-GTAW.

Abstract Sperm is essential for successful artificial insemination in dairy cattle, and its quality can be influenced by both epigenetic modification and epigenetic inheritance. The bovine germline differentiation is characterized by epigenetic reprogramming, while intergenerational and transgenerational epigenetic inheritance can influence the offspring’s development through the transmission of epigenetic features to the offspring via the germline. Therefore, the selection of bulls with superior sperm quality for the production and fertility traits requires a better understanding of the epigenetic mechanism and more accurate identifications of epigenetic biomarkers. We have comprehensively reviewed the current progress in the studies of bovine sperm epigenome in terms of both resources and biological discovery in order to provide perspectives on how to harness this valuable information for genetic improvement in the cattle breeding industry.

This study was conducted to investigate the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) associated with forage plants in the native grassland of western Inner Mongolia and to evaluate their effects on alfalfa silage fermentation. Forage plants and their spontaneous fermentation silages were analysed using culture-based techniques for LAB isolation; the phenotypic properties and 16S rDNA and pheS or rpoA gene sequences of the isolates were evaluated; alfalfa was ensiled with four additive combinations: Lactiplantibacillus plantarum subsp. plantarum (GI19), Lact. plantarum subsp. plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus (GI19+GI51), GI19 and 20 g/kg fresh matter of sucrose (GI19+S), and GI19+GI51+S, for 60 d. A total of 73 strains belonging to 16 species were isolated. All isolates grew at 5–45 °C and in 3.0% NaCl, and most of them grew in 6.5% NaCl. Enterococcus faecalis and Lact. plantarum were 26.03% and 17.81% of the total isolates, respectively. All additives improved the silage quality, while GI19+S was more effective for alfalfa ensiling with a higher lactic acid content and lower pH, undesirable microorganism counts, and acetic acid and NH3-N contents than remnant additives. In conclusion, the LAB species were diverse, and most of them possessed good cryotolerance and osmotolerance; GI19+S was the optimal inoculant for alfalfa fermentation improvement.

Face recognition has been well studied under visible light and infrared (IR) in both intra-spectral and cross-spectral cases. However, how to fuse different light bands for face recognition, i.e., hyperspectral face recognition, is still an open research problem, which has the advantages of richer information retention and all-weather functionality over single-band face recognition. Thus, in this research, we revisit the hyperspectral recognition problem and provide a deep learning-based approach. A new fusion model (named HyperFace) is proposed to address this problem. The proposed model features a pre-fusion scheme, a Siamese encoder with bi-scope residual dense learning, a feedback-style decoder, and a recognition-oriented composite loss function. Experiments demonstrate that our method yields a much higher recognition rate than face recognition using only visible light or IR data. Moreover, our fusion model is shown to be superior to other general-purpose image fusion methods that are either traditional or deep learning-based, including state-of-the-art methods, in terms of both image quality and recognition performance.

This article provides a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art techniques for detecting and diagnosing stator winding inter-turn short faults (ITSFs) in permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) for electric vehicles (EVs). The review focuses on the following three main categories of diagnostic approaches: motor model-based, signal processing-based, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based fault detection and diagnosis methods. Motor model-based methods utilize motor state estimation and motor parameter estimation as the primary strategies for ITSF diagnosis. Signal processing-based techniques extract fault signatures from motor measured data across time, frequency, or time-frequency domains. In contrast, AI-based methods automatically extract higher-order fault signatures from large volumes of preprocessed data, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of fault diagnosis. The strengths and limitations of each approach are thoroughly examined, providing valuable insights into the advancements in ITSF detection and diagnosis techniques for PMSMs in EV applications. The emphasis is placed on the application of signal processing methods and deep learning techniques in the diagnosis of ITSF in PMSMs in EV applications.

In order to explore the influence of dip angles on the deformation and failure of a coal–rock combination, uniaxial compression experiments were carried out on a coal–rock combination with different dip angles, and the acoustic emissions (hereinafter referred to as AE) responses during loading were collected. Based on the damage mechanics theory and fractal theory, the fractal dimensions of different damage degrees were calculated. The results show that, with the increase in the inclination angle, the compressive strength and elastic modulus of the coal–rock combination gradually decreased, while the AE ringing count gradually increased first and then decreased. At the initial loading stage of the specimen, the greater the damage degree of the coal–rock combination under the same strain condition, the larger the value of its overall fractal dimension. The AE fractal dimension of the coal–rock combination increases gradually between 10% and 20% of the damage degree. It suddenly decreased between 50% and 60%, then increased slightly before gradually decreasing to the minimum between 80% and 100%. The sudden decrease in fractal dimension, a slight increase, and then a continuous decrease can be used as the precursor information for the instability and failure of the coal–rock combination.

Legume crops establish symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia for biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), a process that provides a prominent natural nitrogen source in agroecosystems; and efficient nodulation and nitrogen fixation processes require a large amount of phosphorus (P). Here, a role of GmPAP4, a nodule-localized purple acid phosphatase, in BNF and seed yield was functionally characterized in whole transgenic soybean (Glycine max) plants under a P-limited condition. GmPAP4 was specifically expressed in the infection zones of soybean nodules and its expression was greatly induced in low P stress. Altered expression of GmPAP4 significantly affected soybean nodulation, BNF, and yield under the P-deficient condition. Nodule number, nodule fresh weight, nodule nitrogenase, APase activities, and nodule total P content were significantly increased in GmPAP4 overexpression (OE) lines. Structural characteristics revealed by toluidine blue staining showed that overexpression of GmPAP4 resulted in a larger infection area than wild-type (WT) control. Moreover, the plant biomass and N and P content of shoot and root in GmPAP4 OE lines were also greatly improved, resulting in increased soybean yield in the P-deficient condition. Taken together, our results demonstrated that GmPAP4, a purple acid phosphatase, increased P utilization efficiency in nodules under a P-deficient condition and, subsequently, enhanced symbiotic BNF and seed yield of soybean.

Abstract Background To evaluate anterior segment structural alterations after implantable collamer lens (ICL) implantation in myopic patients using swept-source quantitative optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Methods This prospective study included 47 eyes in 24 patients with preoperative spherical equivalent ≥ -3.00 D. Patients underwent ICL implantation at Department of Ophthalmology, Peking University Third Hospital, from May 2021 to December 2022. SS-OCT was used to measure anterior chamber width (ACW), angle opening distance (AOD), angle recess area (ARA), trabecular-iris area (TISA), trabecular-iris angle (TIA), iridotrabecular contact (ITC) area, and ITC Index before ICL implantation surgery and at 1 month follow-up. The correlations among the ITC index, vault, and angle parameters were analysed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to explore the ability of the vault to identify eyes with suspected angle-closure. Results At one month following ICL implantation, the ITC area was 0.396 ± 0.37 mm2, and the ITC index is 8.143 ± 5.439%. All angle parameters, except ACW, showed a statistically significant reduction on SS-OCT (P 0.659 mm was found to be optimal for angle-closure suspect with a sensitivity of 85.2% and a specificity of 53.9%. Conclusions Anterior chamber angle parameters decreased one month after ICL implantation, and their percentage changes and ITC index correlated with the vault. When the vault is larger than 0.659 mm, it is necessary to be alert to possible closed angle suspicion.

Abstract Aiming at the problems of high power density and difficult heat dissipation of high‐speed train traction motors, this study takes a 600 kW asynchronous traction motor as a research object and optimises the motor cooling structure through the fluid‐structure coupled heat transfer analysis and genetic algorithm. Based on the principles of fluid dynamics and heat transfer, the motor's fluid flow and heat transfer laws are calculated and analysed, and the calculation accuracy is verified by the experimental data. Based on exploring the influence of the stator ventilation aperture and the number on motor fluid and temperature, aiming to reduce the maximum temperature of each motor component, a bivariate multi‐objective mathematical model of stator ventilation aperture and number is established, and the optimal solution is found with the help of the genetic algorithm. Finally, the optimisation effect is verified by comparing the motor temperature before and after optimisation.

Objective At present, there is no consensus or guidance on indications for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) patients to receive hip arthroplasty (THA) treatment. This study aims to explore the factors that influence the decision‐making for THA in patients with ONFH, and to provide references for clinical decision for ONFH patients to be indicated for THA or hip preservation. Methods This retrospective case–control study involved data for ONFH patients from July 2016 to October 2021 from the China Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head Database (CONFHD). The patients with ONFH, and unilateral hip affected at the first visit were divided into THA group and non‐THA group according to if they had undergone THA treatment. The differences between the two groups of patients in terms of gender, age at the time of consultation, body mass index (BMI), etiology, onset side, association research circulation osseous (ARCO) stage, hip joint function, visual analog scale (VAS), etc. were analyzed. Multivariate binomial logistic regression analysis was then applied to evaluate the risk factors of ONFH patients who underwent THA during the first visit. Results A total of 640 patients were recruited for analysis, including 209 cases from the THA group and 431 cases from the non‐THA group. Although the development of graphene broadband terahertz (THz) absorbers is relatively mature, studies focusing on modulating the absorption window remain limited. Existing research has mainly concentrated on achieving absorption window switching via the phase transition of materials like vanadium dioxide (VO2). However, this method typically allows for switching within two specific windows, lacking the capacity for arbitrary and flexible regulation. This study introduces a novel approach involving a bilayer graphene metasurface absorber (BGMA) to address this limitation, which allows arbitrary manipulation of the absorption windows. To facilitate rapid and accurate selection of the structural parameters, an artificial neural network (ANN)-based inverse design method is employed, which achieves a tunable absorption bandwidth of 6.70 THz with an error amount to 0.59%. Through in-depth mechanistic analyses, it is demonstrated that the BGMA can achieve tunable absorption between a low-frequency broadband absorption (L-FBA) mode and a high-frequency broadband absorption (H-FBA) mode. This tunability arises from the transition between graphene localized surface plasmon resonance and graphene surface plasmon resonance. Overall, the outcomes of this study underscore the remarkable tunable performance of the BGMA achieved through ANN-based inverse design. This innovation holds significant promise for applications in security detection, and object stealth.

In semi-arid regions of northwest China, the planting pattern of double ridge-furrow with full film mulching (DRFM) is widely used to improve maize productivity. However, little is known about reasonable application amounts of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) fertilizers for maize under this planting pattern, and local farmers applying unreasonably large fertilizer amounts results in wasted resources and environmental pollution. Therefore, the effects of N, P, and K fertilizer application amounts on the leaf area index (LAI), aboveground dry matter accumulation and translocation, grain yield and water productivity (WP), and nutrient uptake and utilization by maize under DRFM were studied in 2018 and 2019. A field experiment was conducted with five fertilization levels under DRFM, and the treatments of which were: M1: 60 kg N ha–1, 60 kg P2O5 ha–1, 45 kg K2O ha–1; M2–5 each increased N, P2O5, and K2O by 60 kg ha–1, 30 kg ha–1 and 45 kg ha–1, respectively, compared to the previous treatment. No fertilizer under flat planting with non-film mulching was included as the control. The results showed that the logistic model better described the dynamic accumulation process for aboveground dry matter. The LAI, maximum aboveground dry matter accumulation rate, average accumulation rate for aboveground dry matter, and N, P, and K uptake initially increased, but then declined as fertilizer applications increased, and all factors reached their maximum values under M3. Dry matter translocation and accumulation after silking were positively correlated with grain yield. Grain yield and WP were greatest under M3 with an average of 10.77 t ha–1 and 29.12 kg m–3 across the two years, which were 4.46–138.19% and 1.29–153.15% greater than the other treatments, respectively. Although N, P, and K fertilizer use efficiency was lower under M3 than M1 and M2, it produced a much higher yield and WP. In summary, 180 kg N ha–1, 120 kg P2O5 ha–1, and 135 kg K2O ha–1 is recommended as the optimal N, P, and K fertilizer application scheme for maize under DRFM to achieve the great yield, and water and fertilizer use efficiencies in northwest China.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is the primary environmental stressor and a significant threat to public health. However, the effect of PM2.5 exposure on human nasal microbiota and its pathophysiological implication remain less understood. This study aimed to explore the associations of PM2.5 exposure with indices of nasal microbiota and biomarkers of nasal inflammation and oxidative stress. We conducted a panel study with 75 students in Xinxiang, Henan Province, China, from September to December 2017. Biomarkers of nasal inflammation and oxidative stress including interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), 8-epi-prostaglandin F2 alpha (8-epi-PGF2α) and indices of nasal microbiota diversity and phenotypes were measured. Linear mixed-effect models and bioinformatic analyses were performed to assess the association of PM2.5 concentrations with the abovementioned biomarkers and indices. It was found that per 1 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 was associated with increments of 13.15% (95 % CI: 5.53–20.76 %) and 78.98 % (95 % CI: 21.61–136.36 %) in TNF-α on lag2 and lag02. Indices of microbial diversity and phenotypes including equitability, Shannon index, biofilm forming, and oxidative stress tolerant decreased to different extent with the increment in PM2.5. Notably, thirteen differential microbes in Clostridia, Bacilli, and Gammaproteobacteria classes were recognized as keystone taxa and eight of them were associated with TNF-α, IL-6, or 8-epi-PGF2α. Moreover, environmental adaptation was the most critical functional pathway of nasal microbiota associated with PM2.5 exposure. In summary, short-term exposure to PM2.5 is associated with nasal inflammation, microbiota diversity reduction, and the microbiota phenotype alterations.

In order to clarify the nutrients and stoichiometric changes of soil aggregates in different forest types, reveal the soil nutrient retention and limitation characteristics of coal mining subsidence land, and then screen out the best reclaimed-forest types. In this study, three types of reclaimed forests, namely Amygdalus sylvestris, Prunus sylvestris, and Xanthomonas serrata, were set up on the Shenfu-Dongsheng mining area in the coal mining subsidence area. At the same time, the nearby unsettled and unplanted abandoned farmland was used as a control, based on the dry sieve method to explore the soil mechanical stability aggregate composition, soil SOC (organic carbon), TN (total nitrogen), TP (total phosphorus) content and its stoichiometric characteristics in response to long-term vegetation reclamation in 0-40 cm soil law. The results showed that the content of soil micro-aggregates of different reclaimed-forest types decreased while the content of large aggregates increased, and the total amount of large aggregates >0.25 mm in each forest type exceeded 70%. The content of SOC, TN and TP in soils of different forest types 0.25 mm large aggregates to soil SOC, TN and TP were 72%-83%,66%-74%, 65%-82% respectively. The C/N, C/P and N/P of soil aggregates of different forest types were all lower than the average of national and global. Abstract Background Insights into the genetic basis of complex traits and disease in both human and livestock species have been achieved over the past decade through detection of genetic variants in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). A majority of such variants were found located in noncoding genomic regions, and though the involvement of numerous regulatory elements (REs) has been predicted across multiple tissues in domesticated animals, their evolutionary conservation and effects on complex traits have not been fully elucidated, particularly in ruminants. Here, we systematically analyzed 137 epigenomic and transcriptomic datasets of six mammals, including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, mice, and humans, and then integrated them with large-scale GWAS of complex traits. Results Using 40 ChIP-seq datasets of H3K4me3 and H3K27ac, we detected 68,479, 58,562, 63,273, 97,244, 111,881, and 87,049 REs in the liver of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, humans and mice, respectively. We then systematically characterized the dynamic functional landscapes of these REs by integrating multi-omics datasets, including gene expression, chromatin accessibility, and DNA methylation. We identified a core set (n = 6359) of ruminant-specific REs that are involved in liver development, metabolism, and immune processes. Genes with more complex cis-REs exhibited higher gene expression levels and stronger conservation across species. Furthermore, we integrated expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) and GWAS from 44 and 52 complex traits/diseases in cattle and humans, respectively. These results demonstrated that REs with different degrees of evolutionary conservation across species exhibited distinct enrichments for GWAS signals of complex traits. Conclusions We systematically annotated genome-wide functional REs in liver across six mammals and demonstrated the evolution of REs and their associations with transcriptional output and conservation. Detecting lineage-specific REs allows us to decipher the evolutionary and genetic basis of complex phenotypes in livestock and humans, which may benefit the discovery of potential biomedical models for functional variants and genes of specific human diseases.

The action of freeze–thaw (F–T) cycles of claystone exerts a profound impact on the slope stability of open-pit mines in water-rich regions. Microstructural changes are observed as a crucial factor in determining the hydraulic characteristics and mechanical behaviors of claystone. The present work integrates a micro-X-ray computed tomography (Micro-CT) scanner, equipped with image processing and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction capabilities, employed to observe the microstructure of claystone under varying numbers of F–T cycles (0, 10, 20, 30, and 50). Furthermore, seepage numerical simulations based on Micro-CT measurements are conducted to evaluate the hydraulic characteristics. Through meticulous microscopic observation and mechanical analysis, the damage mechanism induced by F–T cycles is revealed and the evolutionary characteristics are analyzed. The two-dimensional (2D) images of 3D reconstructed models unveil the gradual initiation propagation and coalescence of an intricate fissuring network in claystone during the F–T cycles. As the number of F–T cycles increases from 0 to 50, the 3D porosity exhibits exponential growth. Additionally, the influence of F–T cycles substantially enhances the connectivity of fissures. The seepage numerical simulations demonstrate that the evolutionary progression of fissures substantially augments the number of flow paths and enhances permeability. The increase in permeability follows an exponential trend, reflecting the distribution and evolution of fissures under F–T cycles. The impact on permeability arises from a combination of micromechanical properties and the microstructure of claystones. The present research tries to elucidate the microscopic evolution of fissures and their corresponding hydraulic properties in water-saturated claystone, offering significant insights for investigating the slope stability of open-pit mines in regions.

Background: Colocasia esculenta L. Schott is a main traditional root crop in China, serving as an important vegetable and staple food. Drought stress plays vital role on the growth and development of taro corm. Methods: Two different varieties of taro in Jiangsu were selected: Xiangsha taro and Longxiang taro. The accumulation characteristics, morphological structure, and physicochemical properties of taro corm starch were studied by microscopic observation, particle size analysis, and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) analysis. Transcriptome analyses were used to identify the related genes of taro corm under drought stress. Results: During the growth of taro, the number of amyloplasts showed an obvious increasing trend and shifted from being dispersed throughout the cells to being gathered on one side of the cells, and morphological observations showed that smaller granular distribution gradually changed to a larger lumpy distribution. The particle size of Longxiang taro is smaller than that of Xiangsha taro. Under drought stress conditions, the occurrence of starch grains and corm size were inhibited in Xiangsha taro. Transcriptome sequencing of drought-stressed taro corms showed that the enzymes related to starch synthesis were differentially expressed. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis of drought-stressed taro corms showed that drought affected hormone signal transduction, material metabolism, drought stress tolerance, plant growth and development, and stress resistance, which triggered the plant drought adaptive response. Conclusions: Drought stress inhibits starch accumulation in taro.

Mercury (Hg) pollution not only poses a threat to the environment but also adversely affects the growth and development of plants, with potential repercussions for animals and humans through bioaccumulation in the food chain. Maize, a crucial source of food, industrial materials, and livestock feed, requires special attention in understanding the genetic factors influencing mercury accumulation. Developing maize varieties with low mercury accumulation is vital for both maize production and human health. In this study, a comprehensive genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using an enlarged SNP panel comprising 1.25 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 230 maize inbred lines across three environments. The analysis identified 111 significant SNPs within 78 quantitative trait loci (QTL), involving 169 candidate genes under the Q model. Compared to the previous study, the increased marker density and optimized statistical model led to the discovery of 74 additional QTL, demonstrating improved statistical power. Gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis revealed that most genes participate in arsenate reduction and stress responses. Notably, GRMZM2G440968, which has been reported in previous studies, is associated with the significant SNP chr6.S_155668107 in axis tissue. It encodes a cysteine proteinase inhibitor, implying its potential role in mitigating mercury toxicity by inhibiting cysteine. Haplotype analyses provided further insights, indicating that lines carrying hap3 exhibited the lowest mercury content compared to other haplotypes. In summary, our study significantly enhances the statistical power of GWAS, identifying additional genes related to mercury accumulation and metabolism. These findings offer valuable insights into unraveling the genetic basis of mercury content in maize and contribute to the development of maize varieties with low mercury accumulation.

Objectives: The study aims to explore the ocular biometry of a myopic population in Northern China, focusing specifically on anterior and posterior segment lengths. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The medical records of 3458 myopic patients who underwent refractive surgery were evaluated. Axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT) and other biometric parameters were measured using the IOL Master 700. The study determined the anterior segment length (ASL = ACD + LT), the posterior segment length (PSL = AL − ASL) and the ratio of ASL to PSL (ASL/PSL). Results: This study included 3458 eyes from 3458 myopic patients (1171 men and 2287 women). The mean age was 27.38 ± 6.88, ranging from 16 to 48 years old. The mean ASL was 7.35 ± 0.27 mm, and the mean PSL was 18.39 ± 1.18 mm. The ASL and PSL trends demonstrate an age-related increase for both genders, with notable gender-specific variations. Across most age groups, males typically exhibited higher ASLs and PSLs than females, with the exception of the 35–40 and 40–45 age groups. The ASL and PSL consistently increased with a rising AL. The AL strongly correlates with the PSL and negatively correlates with the ASL/PSL ratio. The ACD and LT moderately correlate with the ASL, but an increased LT does not imply a longer posterior segment. The CCT and SE show little correlation with axial eye parameters. Conclusions: Among Chinese myopic patients, a longer ASL and PSL were correlated with older age and the male gender. The AL strongly correlates positively with the PSL and negatively correlates with the ASL/PSL ratio. An elongation of the posterior segment may primarily account for an eyeball’s lengthening.

Accurate assessment of dough kneading is pivotal in pasta processing, where both under-kneading and over-kneading can detrimentally impact dough quality. This study proposes an innovative approach utilizing a cost-effective current sensor to ascertain the optimal kneading time for dough. Throughout the kneading process, the dough’s tensile resistance gradually increases, reflecting the evolution of properties such as the gluten network. This leads to a discernible ascending phase in dough quality, evident through an increase in the load current of the mixing machine, succeeded by a subsequent decline beyond a certain threshold. The identification of this peak point enables the achievement of optimal dough consistency, thereby enhancing the overall quality of both the dough and subsequent pasta products. After the final product quality assessment, this novel method promises to be a valuable tool in optimizing pasta processing and ensuring consistent product quality.

As a traditional Chinese dish cutting technology process, Gaidao artificially create cuts embedded in the food surface by cutting through it with knife, a process that currently plays an important role in the beef marinating process. And different Gaidao processes directly affect the beef marination flavour and marination efficiency. This study is the first to propose the use of Hyperspectral imaging technology (HSI) combined with finite element analysis to investigate the effect of Gaidao process on the quality of marinated beef. The study was carried out by collecting spectral information of beef marinated with different sucrose concentrations and combining various pre-processing methods and algorithms such as PLS, BiPLS, iPLS, and SiPLS to establish a quantitative model of sucrose concentration in beef, and finally optimizing parameters such as the length, position and number of Gaidao by Finite Element Analysis (FEA), which showed that when marinated with 1.0 mol/m³ sucrose solution, the concentration of sucrose in all tissues in the Gaidao steak reached 0.8 mol/m³ and above, which greatly improved the diffusion effect of the marinade. This work provides new ideas and methods to optimize the beef marinade Gaidao process, which has important practical value and research significance.

In recent years, multi-bucket foundations have been studied and gradually adopted in engineering practices as a novel foundation for offshore wind turbines within a range of water depth of 30 to 50 m. This study investigated the motion characteristics of air-floating tripod bucket foundation (AFTBF) through a series of experiments during free air-floating. The experimental results show that the surge force appears to be the most important factor influencing pitch moment and motion, whether it is a change in water depth or a draft for AFTBF. The maximum amplitudes of surge acceleration and pitch angle show a trend of increasing with narrower spacing and decreasing with wider spacing, while the heave acceleration shows an opposite trend. The added mass and damping of heave motion for AFTBF increase with shallower water due to the increasing pressure difference between the inside and bottom of bucket foundation. The shallower the water depth and the larger the draft, the longer the resonance period of heave.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR), retinal vein occlusion (RVO), and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) pose significant global health challenges, often resulting in vision impairment and blindness. Automatic detection of these conditions is crucial, particularly in underserved rural areas with limited access to ophthalmic services. Despite remarkable advancements in artificial intelligence, especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs), their complexity can make interpretation difficult. In this study, we curated a dataset consisting of 15,089 color fundus photographs (CFPs) obtained from 8110 patients who underwent fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) examination. The primary objective was to construct integrated models that merge CNNs with an attention mechanism. These models were designed for a hierarchical multilabel classification task, focusing on the detection of DR, RVO, AMD, and other fundus conditions. Furthermore, our approach extended to the detailed classification of DR, RVO, and AMD according to their respective subclasses. We employed a methodology that entails the translation of diagnostic information obtained from FFA results into CFPs. Our investigation focused on evaluating the models’ ability to achieve precise diagnoses solely based on CFPs. Remarkably, our models showcased improvements across diverse fundus conditions, with the ConvNeXt-base + attention model standing out for its exceptional performance. The ConvNeXt-base + attention model achieved remarkable metrics, including an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.943, a referable F1 score of 0.870, and a Cohen’s kappa of 0.778 for DR detection. For RVO, it attained an AUC of 0.960, a referable F1 score of 0.854, and a Cohen’s kappa of 0.819. Furthermore, in AMD detection, the model achieved an AUC of 0.959, an F1 score of 0.727, and a Cohen’s kappa of 0.686. Impressively, the model demonstrated proficiency in subclassifying RVO and AMD, showcasing commendable sensitivity and specificity. Moreover, our models enhanced interpretability by visualizing attention weights on fundus images, aiding in the identification of disease findings. These outcomes underscore the substantial impact of our models in advancing the detection of DR, RVO, and AMD, offering the potential for improved patient outcomes and positively influencing the healthcare landscape.

As the largest green macroalgal bloom in the Yellow Sea of China, the overgrowth and degradation of Ulva prolifera (U. prolifera) have a harmful effect on marine organisms and the aquaculture industry. However, the regulation mechanism of U. prolifera stress on the antioxidant capacity and inflammatory response of marine fish is still not completely understood. A 15-day exposure experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of U. prolifera stress on the antioxidant capacity and inflammatory response of the Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) (283.11 ± 6.45 g). The results showed that U. prolifera stress significantly decreased their survival rate. Serum total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and non-specific immune-related enzyme activities were significantly impacted under U. prolifera conditions. Moreover, U. prolifera stress significantly decreased T-AOC, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and catalase (CAT) activities in the liver, while malondialdehyde (MDA) contents were significantly increased. Similarly, antioxidant-related gene (cat, nrf2, and keap1) expressions were synchronously downregulated in the liver under U. prolifera stress. Furthermore, U. prolifera stress significantly upregulated pro-inflammatory gene (tnf-α, il-1β, ifn-γ, and p65) expressions and the phosphorylation levels of the p38 and JNK MAPK pathways in the head kidney. In addition, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related gene and protein expressions were also upregulated in the head kidney. Overall, these results revealed that U. prolifera stress suppressed the antioxidant capacity and induced an inflammatory response in the Japanese flounder. This study could advance the understanding of the adverse effects of U. prolifera stress on marine benthic fish and promote the sustainable development of aquaculture.

Massive macroalgae blooms, primarily caused by the overgrowth of Ulva prolifera (U. prolifera) in the Yellow Sea of China, pose a severe risk to both marine organisms and the aquaculture industry. This study’s aim was to evaluate the impact of U. prolifera degradation on the growth performance and antioxidant capacity of Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) and select some potential Japanese flounder families (labeled 2101–2108, established by crossbreeding) tolerating U. prolifera degradation conditions. Thus, a 60-day U. prolifera exposure experiment was conducted. The results showed that the contents of Na, K, Mg, and Fe elements in the U. prolifera degradation water were significantly increased. The specific growth rate and survival rate of flounder were significantly decreased under the U. prolifera degradation condition, while the 2101 and 2103 flounder families showed a better growth performance compared with the positive control (PC) group. Moreover, the results showed that activities of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), transaminases, and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) in serum were significantly decreased, while the 2103 flounder family showed higher activities. Furthermore, U. prolifera degradation significantly increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and glutathione (GSH) content while decreasing catalase (CAT) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in the liver. Specifically, SOD and CAT activities of the 2103 flounder family were higher than the 2101 flounder family and PC group. In addition, the gill SOD and CAT activities of the 2103 flounder family were significantly higher than the PC group. Similarly, the antioxidant-related gene (sod and cat) expressions were synchronously upregulated or downregulated in the liver and gills in response to U. prolifera degradation. These results revealed that U. prolifera degradation decreased the growth performance and influenced the antioxidant capacity of Japanese flounder, while the 2103 flounder family had better advantages in the U. prolifera degradation condition. Therefore, the 2103 flounder family could be regarded as the potential flounder family tolerating U. prolifera degradation. The increased Fe content in the U. prolifera degradation water may be one of the main causes of the physiological alterations observed in Japanese flounder.

The photovoltaic industry is developing rapidly because of its renewable energy and other advantages. However, the installation of this infrastructure may affect soil, vegetation, and carbon dynamics, making it is necessary to carry out vegetation restoration work at a plant’s location in the later stages of its construction. For this reason, three types of artificial vegetation were selected (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica, Astragalus membra-naceus var. mongholicus and Medicago sativa) as research objects in an ecological photovoltaic power plant in Northern China, to study the changes in soil organic carbon storage (SOCS), carbon:nitrogen ratios (C:N) and C:phosphorus ratios (C:P) at different soil depths and for different vegetation types. Natural vegetation plots undisturbed by the construction of the power plant were used as a control. Seven years after revegetation, we found that the storage and content of soil organic carbon in all three artificial vegetation plots were notably lower compared to the control. Nevertheless, the soil’s organic carbon content for Medicago sativa plots increased was significantly higher by 1.2 g·kg−1 compared to Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica and A. membranaceus var. mongholicus plots, while organic carbon storage increased significantly by 3.55 t·ha and 7.15 t·ha. SOCS, C:N, and C:P concentrations in the 0–20 cm soil layer exhibited a significantly higher value in comparison to those of the 20–40 cm soil layer. As the soil depth increased, all the concentrations declined gradually. Vegetation type and soil depth, as well as their interaction, had a significant impact on soil carbon storage, C:N, and C:P. The study area was restricted by the availability of P. In general, vegetation restoration is a beneficial ecological practice for soil restoration at photovoltaic power stations. It is believed that planting alfalfa can accelerate the improvement of soil carbon with an extension of vegetation recovery time. In order to restore the balance of nutrients for plants, it is necessary to avoid human interference at the later stage, and to supplement phosphorus as soon as possible to minimize phosphorus limitation at the later stage of vegetation growth, which is of great importance to increasing the likelihood of success in reclaiming disturbed land.
