Antarctic sea ice plays a critical role in the Earth system, influencing energy, heat and freshwater fluxes, air–sea gas exchange, ice shelf dynamics, ocean circulation, nutrient cycling, marine productivity and global carbon cycling. However, accurate simulation of recent sea-ice changes remains challenging and, therefore, projecting future sea-ice changes and their influence on the global climate system is uncertain. Reconstructing past changes in sea-ice cover can provide additional insights into climate feedbacks within the Earth system at different timescales. This paper is the first of two review papers from the Cycles of Sea Ice Dynamics in the Earth system (C-SIDE) working group. In this first paper, we review marine- and ice core-based sea-ice proxies and reconstructions of sea-ice changes throughout the last glacial–interglacial cycle. Antarctic sea-ice reconstructions rely mainly on diatom fossil assemblages and highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) alkenes in marine sediments, supported by chemical proxies in Antarctic ice cores. Most reconstructions for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) suggest that winter sea ice expanded all around Antarctica and covered almost twice its modern surface extent. In contrast, LGM summer sea ice expanded mainly in the regions off the Weddell and Ross seas. The difference between winter and summer sea ice during the LGM led to a larger seasonal cycle than today. More recent efforts have focused on reconstructing Antarctic sea ice during warm periods, such as the Holocene and the Last Interglacial (LIG), which may serve as an analogue for the future. Notwithstanding regional heterogeneities, existing reconstructions suggest that sea-ice cover increased from the warm mid-Holocene to the colder Late Holocene with pervasive decadal- to millennial-scale variability throughout the Holocene. Studies, supported by proxy modelling experiments, suggest that sea-ice cover was halved during the warmer LIG when global average temperatures were ∼2 ∘C above the pre-industrial (PI). There are limited marine (14) and ice core (4) sea-ice proxy records covering the complete 130 000 year (130 ka) last glacial cycle. The glacial–interglacial pattern of sea-ice advance and retreat appears relatively similar in each basin of the Southern Ocean. Rapid retreat of sea ice occurred during Terminations II and I while the expansion of sea ice during the last glaciation appears more gradual especially in ice core data sets. Marine records suggest that the first prominent expansion occurred during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 4 and that sea ice reached maximum extent during MIS 2. We, however, note that additional sea-ice records and transient model simulations are required to better identify the underlying drivers and feedbacks of Antarctic sea-ice changes over the last 130 ka. This understanding is critical to improve future predictions.

Distribution and composition of coarse particles (>250 μm) were investigated in 13 sediment cores from the Chukchi margin, western Arctic Ocean. Petrographic clast identification is supplemented by XRF core scanning, EDS analysis of coal fragments, and AMS 14C dating of planktic foraminifera for age control. Coal debris distribution is also investigated in surface sediments of the study region for provenance interpretation. The sediment-core study focuses on the interval between the Last Glacial Maximum and the Holocene for constraining provenance and timing of the deglacial discharge. We find that this interval is characterized by a distinct enrichment in sedimentary rock fragments, including coal. Comparison with longer stratigraphic records indicates that this composition is unique for the time interval since at least Maine Isotope Stage 5. Based on the timing, interpreted provenance, and geographic distribution of the coal enrichment, we conclude that the most likely primary source was the deglacial discharge from the Mackenzie drainage basin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS). The identified coal-bearing layer, also expressed in the XRF sulfur record, can be thus used as a stratigraphic marker for the LIS discharge to the Arctic Ocean during the last deglaciation.

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) plays a crucial role in global ocean circulation by fostering deep-water upwelling and formation of new water masses. On geological time-scales, ACC variations are poorly constrained beyond the last glacial. Here, we reconstruct changes in ACC strength in the central Drake Passage in vicinity of the modern Polar Front over a complete glacial-interglacial cycle (i.e., the past 140,000 years), based on sediment grain-size and geochemical characteristics. We found significant glacial-interglacial changes of ACC flow speed, with weakened current strength during glacials and a stronger circulation in interglacials. Superimposed on these orbital-scale changes are high-amplitude millennial-scale fluctuations, with ACC strength maxima correlating with diatom-based Antarctic winter sea-ice minima, particularly during full glacial conditions. We infer that the ACC is closely linked to Southern Hemisphere millennial-scale climate oscillations, amplified through Antarctic sea ice extent changes. These strong ACC variations modulated Pacific-Atlantic water exchange via the “cold water route” and potentially affected the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and marine carbon storage., How the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) changed on glacial-interglacial time scales is not well known. We use sediment cores collected by the Chinese National Arctic Research Expeditions from the Alpha Ridge to advance Quaternary stratigraphy and paleoceanographic reconstructions for the Arctic Ocean. Our cores show a good litho/biostratigraphic correlation to sedimentary records developed earlier for the central Arctic Ocean, suggesting a recovered stratigraphic range of ca. 0.6 Ma, suitable for paleoclimatic studies on orbital time scales. This stratigraphy was tested by correlating the stacked Alpha Ridge record of bulk XRF manganese, calcium and zirconium (Mn, Ca, Zr), to global stable-isotope (LR04-δ18O) and sea-level stacks and tuning to orbital parameters. Correlation results corroborate the applicability of presumed climate/sea-level controlled Mn variations in the Arctic Ocean for orbital tuning. This approach enables better understanding of the global and orbital controls on the Arctic climate. Orbital tuning experiments for our records indicate strong eccentricity (100-kyr) and precession (∼20-kyr) controls on the Arctic Ocean, probably implemented via glaciations and sea ice. Provenance proxies like Ca and Zr are shown to be unsuitable as orbital tuning tools, but useful as indicators of glacial/deglacial processes and circulation patterns in the Arctic Ocean. Their variations suggest an overall long-term persistence of the Beaufort Gyre circulation in the Alpha Ridge region. Some glacial intervals, e.g., MIS 6 and 4/3, are predominated by material presumably transported by the Transpolar Drift. These circulation shifts likely indicate major changes in the Arctic climatic regime, which yet need to be investigated. Overall, our results demonstrate applicability of XRF data to paleoclimatic studies of the Arctic Ocean.

Diatom composition has been studied in two cores retrieved from the Cosmonaut Sea, East Antarctica, during the 36th Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition. The resulting diatom data are compared to other records from the Southern Ocean and the deglaciation history of the Antarctic ice sheet to reveal the climatic response of the ice-proximal environment to the melting of the ice sheet from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to Holocene. The LGM is marked by low productivity and extensive sea ice cover that resulted in poor preservation of diatom frustules. The last deglacial warming process is facilitated by the “bipolar seesaw” effect. The environment in the Cosmonaut Sea is primarily influenced by the melting of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) during the last deglaciation, while the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) remained relatively stable. Maximum sea ice retreat and southward intrusion of the warm Circumpolar Deep Water facilitate the melting of the EAIS during the early Holocene. The developing cavity under the WAIS is suggested to be responsible for the mid-late Holocene cooling in the Cosmonaut Sea. This indicates that the deglaciation of the WAIS is a primary control of environmental changes in the Cosmonaut Sea, despite its ice proximal location adjacent to the EAIS.

Sediment core ARC5-ICE6 from the Makarov Basin was used to reconstruct circum-Arctic glaciation and surface-ocean circulation history for the Middle to Late Pleistocene, ∼0.5–0.7 Ma. Sedimentary proxies include elemental composition, coarse grain content, clay mineralogy, and radiogenic isotopes (Sr-Nd-Pb). Earlier studied records from the central Arctic Ocean were compared with ICE6 for a broader paleoceanographic context. Results indicate predominant sediment delivery from the Eurasian shelves and glaciated mainland with intermittent glacial inputs from North America. Low proxy variability prior to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6 (∼0.2 Ma) suggests persistent sediment transport by sea ice via the Transpolar Drift and limited glaciation at the Eurasian margin. Since MIS 6, sediment inputs and provenance exhibit large shifts between glacial- and interglacial-type environments. The overall northern Eurasian Ice Sheet (EAIS) expansion was possibly related to climatic cooling and growth of a perennial sea ice in the Arctic Ocean. Provenance indicators from MIS 6, 5b and 4/3 reflect EAIS expansions followed by deglacial meltwater discharge from west Siberia. This provenance indicates a strong cyclonic circulation in the Arctic Ocean characterized by a significantly eastward-extended Transpolar Drift. Different glaciogenic sourcing and attendant circulation are proposed for several events within MIS 5 and 3, where proxies indicate increased sediment inputs from North America rather than Eurasian ice sheets. Overall limited glacial influence inferred for MIS 3 is consistent with relatively high sea level reconstructed for this interstadial. The Last Glacial Maximum is barely identifiable in the ICE6 record due to low glacial inputs and/or depositional hiatus.

We investigated the petrographic composition of coarse-grained clasts (>250 μm) in 117 core-top sediment samples from the western Arctic Ocean (the Amerasian Basin, Chukchi Sea, Alaskan/Beaufort margin and East Siberian Sea). Combined with analyses of bulk sediment mineralogy and grain size, we use the results to elucidate the terrigenous clastic sediment distribution patterns and transport modes in four different regions: (1) In the Chukchi Sea, the Bering Strait Inflow (BSI) contributes most of the sediments, with an additional terrigenous clastic contribution from Northern Alaska and Eastern Siberia. The highest coarse clastic content and a northward-fining of the grain-size distributions are attributed to the winnowing by the BSI. (2) In the Alaskan margin, terrigenous clasts are enriched in sea ice/anchor ice-transported quartz-rich sediments from Northern Alaska, and in addition the Alaska Coastal Current (ACC) contributes sediments originating from the Yukon River. Coarse-grained sediments accumulate near offshore Alaska with the finer fractions being transported further into the Chukchi Sea Shelf. (3) In the East Siberian Sea, coarse clasts are sparse and even absent in most study sites. Combined with the results of previous studies, we conclude that the terrigenous components are derived from the Laptev Sea and the adjacent Siberian Platform. They are transported by the Siberian Coastal Current and sea ice. (4) In the Canada Basin, terrigenous clasts are characterized by carbonate and quartz-rich sediments derived from the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA). Sediments incorporated in sea ice/anchor ice drift from the CAA to the Beaufort Sea, where they combine with sediments from the Mackenzie River and are then transported into the Canada Basin by the Beaufort Gyre. Sediments and grain size in northern and southern Canada Basin also involve the early Holocene iceberg-entrained IRD from CAA and winnowing/nepheloid transported mica from marginal areas, respectively.

The records of high-resolution terrestrial biological markers (biomarkers) from Core B2-9 from the northern Bering Sea Slope over the last 9.6 ka BP were presented in the study. Variations in input of terrestrial long-chain nalkanes (referred to as n-alkanes) and vegetation structure in their source regions were investigated. The results show that the nC27 is the main carbon peak and has the greatest contribution rate of the total n-alkane content; this might be related to the abundance of woody plants and their spatial distribution in the source region. nC23 is another n-alkane having a relatively high content; this was mainly derived from submerged plants widespread along the coastal areas in the northern hemisphere. Total n-alkane content dropped quickly at ca. 7.8 ka BP, ca. 6.7 ka BP and ca. 5.4 ka BP, and was followed by four relatively stable stages mostly controlled by sea-level rise, climate change and vegetation distribution in the source region. Variation in carbon preference index (CPI) indicates that the n-alkanes primarily originated from higher land plants, and the average chain length (ACL) and nC31/nC27 ratio reveal the relatively stable presence of woody/herbaceous plants during the Holocene, and dominate woody plants in most of the time. Simultaneous variation in total n-alkane content, nC27 content and its contribution, CPI, ACL and nC31/nC27 ratio over several short periods suggest that the growth rate of the woody plant n-alkane contribution was lower than that of herbaceous plants and fossil n-alkanes under the particular climatic conditions of the source region.

Changes in water circulation in the Bering Sea have profoundly impacted biological productivity, carbon cycle and global ocean circulation, especially from the last deglaciation to the Holocene. Grain size and clay mineral composition were investigated in core ARC6-B10, collected from the northern Bering slope, in order to reveal changes in circulation and sediment provenance since the late deglaciation (~13.7 ka). The results highlight changes in sea level and atmospheric circulation as the primary controls on the variations in grain size and clay mineralogy. Deglacial sea level rise deepened the water passages along the Aleutian Arc, enhanced the inflow of North Pacific water that strengthened the circulation of the Bering Sea, and receded the coastline. These changes increased the supply of smectite-enriched sediments from the Aleutian Islands to the core site. A temporary reduction in smectite and an increase in the illite and chlorite contents during the Preboreal period correspond to the opening of the Bering Strait; this is attributed to rapid sea level rise which resulted in increased sediment resuspension from the shelf. During the mid- to late Holocene, when the sea level stabilized, changes in the Aleutian Low (AL) were a major factor modulating changes in ocean circulation. A weakened AL in the mid-Holocene intensified the northward Bering Slope Current and the increased the flow through the Bering Strait, while an intensified AL, along with an expanded sea ice cover during the late Holocene may have weakened the northward flow.

Fossil ostracode assemblages were investigated in three sediment cores from the Chukchi Plateau, in the western Arctic Ocean, in order to reconstruct its late Quaternary paleoceanographic history. The cores were obtained from water depths of 435–741 m, within the range of modern Atlantic Water (AW). The ostracode abundance shows distinct glacial/interglacial fluctuations, suggesting the suppression of benthic bioproductivity during glacial periods, probably associated with the development of perennial sea ice. Based on the modern ostracode distribution in the Arctic Ocean, 11 common ostracode taxa out of a total of 33 are related to specific water mass or sea ice conditions. Analyses of key ostracode species and a benthic foraminifera species, Cassidulina teretis, reveal a pronounced faunal turnover between MIS 3 and MIS 1. A distinct assemblage dominated by Polycope spp. and accompanied by other species preferring Arctic Intermediate Water (AIW) (Microcythere medistriatum, Pseudocythere caudata, Cytheropteron sedovi, C. scoresbyi, and Pedicythere spp.) characterizes the period between late MIS 5 and MIS 3, whereas MIS 1 is characterized by a rise in Krithe spp. and two species associated with AW (Cytheropteron perlaria and Cassidulina teretis). The faunal turnover indicates an upward shift of AIW and a decline of the influence of warm AW during the period between late MIS 5 and MIS 3, presumably caused by a weakening or cessation of the westward dispersion of AW. The distributions of two sea-ice related species, Acetabulastoma arcticum and Rabilimis mirabilis, indicate minimal perennial sea-ice cover and probably summer sea-ice-free conditions throughout MIS 1 and the development of a summer sea-ice margin environment during interglacial/interstadial periods.

The Southern Ocean plays a major role in the glacial/interglacial global carbon cycle. However, there is a substantial lack of information from its Antarctic Zone south of the Polar Front (PF) to understand key climate processes (e.g., sea ice variability, productivity changes, CO2 source region, shifts of the Southern Westerly Wind) active in this region during the glacial/interglacial transition, due to the limited high-resolution sediment records from this area. To close this gap, we investigated high resolution diatom records from a series of sediment cores from the Atlantic and Western Indian sectors of the Southern Ocean between the modern PF and the Winter Sea Ice (WSI) edge. Summer Sea Surface Temperature (SSST) and sea ice information spanning the past 30 thousand years were derived from diatom transfer functions and indicators, which augment comprehensive information on past surface ocean conditions and related ocean and atmospheric circulation, as well as opal deposition. These complementary lines of evidences also provide important environmental boundary conditions for climate simulations understanding the past climate development in the high latitudes Southern Ocean. Our reconstructions show that the Last Glacial (LG) SSSTs south of the modern PF are 1–3 °C colder than modern conditions, WSI expanded to the modern PF. Our data suggests effective carbon export in the Antarctic Zone during the LG. Deglacial two steps of warming support the bipolar seesaw mechanism. Antarctic Zone is an important source region for the CO2 deglacial increase. The warming was more suppressed towards south, due to continuous ice discharge from Antarctica. The SSSTs exceeded modern values during the early Holocene optimum, when WSI extent probably retreated south of its modern position. The southern boundary of maximum opal deposition zone may have shifted to south of 55°S in the Bouvet Island area at this time. The mid-late Holocene cooling with WSI re-expanding to the Bouvet Island area, probably related to enhanced cold-water export by the Weddell Gyre from the developing cavity under the West Antarctic Ice Shelf. The cooling also suggests a northward shift of the Southern Westerly Wind, at least its southern boundary.

In Southern Ocean sediments south of the Antarctic Polar Front, the scarcity of calcareous microfossils hampers the development of sediment chronologies based on radiocarbon dating and oxygen isotope stratigraphy established from carbonate. In this study, radiometric dating, magnetic susceptibility (MS), biogenic opal content, diatom abundance fluctuation, and paleomagnetic information were investigated on a north–south transect of central Scotia Sea sediment cores to verify their reliability as stratigraphic tools in the study area. Radiocarbon dating on organic carbon humic acid fraction can be used to establish the stratigraphy of upper core sections, but regional comparison and correlation are needed to verify a possible bias by fossil carbon contamination. For the long-term stratigraphy, MS, which can be correlated to the Antarctic ice core dust/climate signal, represents the most valuable parameter. Fine-grained single domain magnetite, probably of biogenic origin, makes a significant contribution to the interglacial MS signal, while major contributions from detrital material affect the glacial MS record. The core from the southern Scotia Sea contains significant proportions of biogenic magnetite also in glacial sediments, suggesting depositional environments different from those of the northern Scotia Sea. Our data suggest low contributions of high-coercive minerals to the overall magnetic intensity of glacial and interglacial Scotia Sea sediments, which excludes dust as a main source of the magnetic signal. Opal content can be used to distinguish between cold and warm intervals for the past 300 thousand years. Abundance fluctuation patterns of diatom species Fragilariopsis kerguelensis and Eucampia antarctica are useful stratigraphic tools for periods back to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6. The Mono Lake geomagnetic excursion is identified in Scotia Sea sediments for the first time. Possible correlations of ash layers are suggested between Scotia Sea sediments and East Antarctic ice cores. They have potential to serve as additional age markers for further studies in this area.

Three sediment cores from the Makarov Basin and Mendeleev Ridge off the Siberian margin were analyzed for a number of litho-, bio- and magnetostratigraphic proxies. Correlation to previously studied Arctic records from Mendeleev to Lomonosov ridges enables paleoceanographic reconstructions for the Middle to Late Pleistocene (estimated ∼0.8 Ma) on orbital time scales. Cyclic changes in lithology corroborated by multiple stratigraphic constraints were tuned to global climate variations based on the manganese content that increases during interglacials, while calcium and zircon were used as proxies for the Laurentide and Eurasian ice sheet inputs. The combined evaluation of glacial and interglacial proxy variabilities provides a coherent picture of the western Arctic Ocean development in the Pleistocene. We suggest that major cyclic changes were driven by summer processes, such as sea-ice retreat and enhanced biological production vs. suppressed ice melt in warmer and colder summers, respectively. A potential link to low latitudes via atmospheric moisture and heat transport is indicated by similarities in the western Arctic Ocean and East Asian monsoon records. Long-term cooling is signified by biogenic proxies related to sea-ice expansion over the western Arctic Ocean with step changes at MIS 11 and 7 (∼0.4 and 0.2–0.3 Ma). This transition also features better fossil preservation indicating less corrosive/oxidative bottom waters, probably resulting from a decrease in organic export production and/or weakening of bottom water ventilation under perennial sea ice. The latter was possibly enhanced by atmospheric cooling and increased meltwater fluxes with the growth of circum-Arctic ice sheets.

The marine-based West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) is currently retreating due to shifting wind-driven oceanic currents that transport warm waters toward the ice margin, resulting in ice shelf thinning and accelerated mass loss of the WAIS. Previous results from geologic drilling on Antarctica's continental margins show significant variability in marine-based ice sheet extent during the late Neogene and Quaternary. Numerical models indicate a fundamental role for oceanic heat in controlling this variability over at least the past 20 My. Although evidence for past ice sheet variability has been collected in marginal settings, sedimentologic sequences from the outer continental shelf are required to evaluate the extent of past ice sheet variability and the associated oceanic forcings and feedbacks. International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 374 drilled a latitudinal and depth transect of five drill sites from the outer continental shelf to rise in the eastern Ross Sea to resolve the relationship between climatic and oceanic change and WAIS evolution through the Neogene and Quaternary. This location was selected because numerical ice sheet models indicate that this sector of Antarctica is highly sensitive to changes in ocean heat flux. The expedition was designed for optimal data-model integration and will enable an improved understanding of the sensitivity of Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) mass balance during warmer-than-present climates (e.g., the Pleistocene "super interglacials," the mid-Pliocene, and the late early to middle Miocene). The principal goals of Expedition 374 were to • Evaluate the contribution of West Antarctica to far-field ice volume and sea level estimates; • Reconstruct ice-proximal atmospheric and oceanic temperatures to identify past polar amplification and assess its forcings and feedbacks; • Assess the role of oceanic forcing (e.g., sea level and temperature) on AIS stability/instability; • Identify the sensitivity of the AIS to Earth's orbital configuration under a variety of climate boundary conditions; and • Reconstruct eastern Ross Sea paleobathymetry to examine relationships between seafloor geometry, ice sheet stability/instability, and global climate. To achieve these objectives, we will • Use data and models to reconcile intervals of maximum Neogene and Quaternary Antarctic ice advance with far-field records of eustatic sea level change; • Reconstruct past changes in oceanic and atmospheric temperatures using a multiproxy approach; • Reconstruct Neogene and Quaternary sea ice margin fluctuations in datable marine continental slope and rise records and correlate these records to existing inner continental shelf records; • Examine relationships among WAIS stability/instability, Earth's orbital configuration, oceanic temperature and circulation, and atmospheric pCO2; and • Constrain the timing of Ross Sea continental shelf overdeepening and assess its impact on Neogene and Quaternary ice dynamics. Expedition 374 was carried out from January to March 2018, departing from Lyttelton, New Zealand. We recovered 1292.70 m of high-quality cores from five sites spanning the early Miocene to late Quaternary. Three sites were cored on the continental shelf (Sites U1521, U1522, and U1523). At Site U1521, we cored a 650 m thick sequence of interbedded diamictite, mudstone, and diatomite, penetrating the Ross Sea seismic Unconformity RSU4. The depositional reconstructions of past glacial and open-marine conditions at this site will provide unprecedented insight into environmental change on the Antarctic continental shelf during the early and middle Miocene. At Site U1522, we cored a discontinuous upper Miocene to Pleistocene sequence of glacial and glaciomarine strata from the outer shelf, with the primary objective to penetrate and date seismic Unconformity RSU3, which is interpreted to represent the first major continental shelf-wide expansion and coalescing of marine-based ice streams from both East and West Antarctica. At Site U1523, we cored a sediment drift located beneath the westerly flowing Antarctic Slope Current (ASC). Cores from this site will provide a record of the changing vigor of the ASC through time. Such a reconstruction will enable testing of the hypothesis that changes in the vigor of the ASC represent a key control on regulating heat flux onto the continental shelf, resulting in the ASC playing a fundamental role in ice sheet mass balance. We also cored two sites on the continental slope and rise. At Sit e U1524, we cored a Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary sequence on the continental rise on the levee of the Hillary Canyon, which is one of the largest conduits of Antarctic Bottom Water delivery from the Antarctic continental shelf into the abyssal ocean. Drilling at Site U1524 was intended to penetrate into middle Miocene and older strata but was initially interrupted by drifting sea ice that forced us to abandon coring in Hole U1524A at 399.5 m drilling depth below seafloor (DSF). We moved to a nearby alternate site on the continental slope (U1525) to core a single hole with a record complementary to the upper part of the section recovered at Site U1524. We returned to Site U1524 3 days later, after the sea ice cleared. W e then cored Hole U1524C with the rotary core barrel with the intention of reaching the target depth of 1000 m DSF. However, we were forced to terminate Hole U1524C at 441.9 m DSF due to a mechanical failure with the vessel that resulted in termination of all drilling operations and a return to Lyttelton 16 days earlier than scheduled. The loss of 39% of our operational days significantly impacted our ability to achieve all Expedition 374 objectives as originally planned. In particular, we were not able to obtain the deeper time record of the middle Miocene on the continental rise or abyssal sequences that would have provided a continuous and contemporaneous archive to the high-quality (but discontinuous) record from Site U1521 on the continental shelf. The mechanical failure also meant we could not recover sediment cores from proposed Site RSCR-19A, which was targeted to obtain a high-fidelity, continuous record of upper Neogene and Quaternary pelagic/hemipelagic sedimentation. Despite our failure to recover a shelf-to-rise transect for the Miocene, a continental shelf-to-rise transect for the Pliocene to Pleistocene interval is possible through comparison of the high-quality records from Site U1522 with those from Site U1525 an d legacy cores from the Antarctic Geological Drilling Project (ANDRILL).

Multiproxy investigations have been performed on Core 08P23 collected from the Chukchi Plateau, the western Arctic Ocean, during the Third Chinese National Arctic Expedition. The core was dated back to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 by a combination of Accelerator Mass Spectrometric (AMS) carbon-14 dating and regional core correlation. A total of five prominent ice-rafted detritus (IRD) events were recognized in MIS 2 and MIS 3. The IRD sources in MIS 3 are originated from vast carbonate rock outcrops of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and clastic quartz in MIS 2 may have a Eurasian origin. Most 18O and 13C values of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral) (Nps) in Core 08P23 are lighter than the average values of surface sediments. The lighter 18O and 13C values of Nps in the two brown layers in MIS 1 and MIS 3 were resulted from meltwater events; and those in the gray layers in MIS 3 were caused by the enhanced sea ice formation. The 18O values varied inversely with 13C in MIS 2 indicate that the study area was covered by thick sea ice or ice sheet with low temperature and little meltwater, which prevented the biological productivity and sea-atmosphere exchange, as well as water mass ventilation. The covaried light values of 18O and 13C in MIS 1 and MIS 3 were resulted from meltwater and/or brine injection.

Late Quaternary paleoenvironmental changes in the western Arctic Ocean are revealed by multi-proxy records of core 03M03 from the Chukchi Abyssal Plain (CAP). Proxy parameters include lithology, grain size fractions, and mineralogy and petrology of ice-rafted detritus (IRD), element contents, biogenic components, δ 18 O, δ 13 C and Mg/Ca of planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sin.) (Nps). Seven IRD (> 250 μm) peaks are interpreted as marking detrital input by rafting sea ice or icebergs during MIS 3 interstadials and early MIS 1. High MnO, CaO and MgO contents and high Ca/Al and Mg/Al ratios during MIS 3 and MIS 1 correspond to increases in ice-rafted detrital carbonates and the synchronous declines in siliciclastic elements (e.g., Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 ). Therefore, these warmer periods were characterized by a high detrital carbonate input entrained in icebergs from the Canadian Arctic Archipelago coeval with an increased input of Mn through rivers and/or coastal erosion. Relatively stable contents of siliciclastic elements and their ratios in the grayish sediment units are interpreted from turbid surface water plumes or nepheloid flows delivered by meltwater and/or brine rejection from ice-sheet margins at the Arctic Ocean periphery. Relatively stable clay- and silt-sized fractions were attributed mainly to sea ice entrainment over glacial–interglacial cycles. High foraminiferal abundances in the brown units during MIS 3 and 1 are related to enhanced calcareous plankton productivity under more open water conditions and/or the incremental input of Atlantic water masses. Relatively high TOC and opal contents in the grayish units of MIS 3 appear to have accumulated by lateral transport of organic matter from the Chukchi shelf to the deep abyssal plain. Lower contents of biogenic material in the brown units probably result from increased dilution by rapid IRD deposition, and from early diagenetic degradation. Depletions in Nps-δ 18 O and -δ 13 C concurrent with high foraminiferal abundances and IRD peaks within the brown units of MIS 3 and 1 are indicative of meltwater pulses, as previously documented across the Arctic Ocean. However, several Nps-δ 18 O and -δ 13 C depletions between the brown units B3 and B2 in MIS 3 could have resulted from enhanced sea ice formation. The Nps-Mg/Ca has the potential to record paleotemperature changes in the Arctic region, but still awaits a better calibration of the Nps-Mg/Ca–temperature relationship with results from core-tops, sediment traps, and plankton tows.

A challenge that limits high-latitude paleo-environment investigations is the lack of foraminiferal shell-bearing sediments for stratigraphy constructions. In the Arctic, the Mn-rich brown layers have been proposed as a new approach to establish glacial-interglacial timescale stratigraphy, but their formation mechanisms remain unclear. Until now, only a limited number of sediment cores with Mn-rich brown layers have been studied, and it has been argued that these layers were formed by diagenesis. During past several years, China expeditions have collected many sediment cores from the western Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea offering an opportunity to investigate sediment color cycles in these regions. In this study, we have studied 14 sediment cores from wide geographic and topographic regions including basin, continental slope, continental shelf, and off-shore deep-sea. First, core images were taken by a line scan camera and high-resolution color reflectance was measured by a spectrometer. Second, core sediments were scanned at 1 cm resolution by an XRF core scanner to obtain element content variations. Third, sediment layers with maxima and minima Mn based on XRF data were analyzed by ICP-OES and ICP-MS to crosscheck the reliability of XRF results and provide precise element concentration. Our results show that 9 cores from slope and basin of the western Arctic bear color cycles which can be effectively indicated by a */ b * ratios, as a * is chromatic value from green to red while b * is chromatic value from blue to yellow. In each of these cores, a */ b * ratios co-vary with contents of Mn and some other redox sensitive trace elements such as Cu, Co, Ni, and especially Mo. Data comparison shows that MnO and Mo concentrations at peak values in the cores gradually decrease, respectively, from 5.22% and 80 ppm on the slope to nearly 1% and 30 ppm in the central basin, whereas minimal MnO and Mo concentrations in these cores always stay around 0.1% and

The late Quaternary paleoceanographic changes in the western Arctic Ocean are revealed by quantitative studies of foraminiferal abundance, ice-rafted detritus (IRD) and its mineralogical and petrological compositions, planktonic Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sin.) (Nps)-δ 18O and -δ 13C, biogenic and non-biogenic components in Core M03 token from the Chukchi Basin during the Second Chinese National Arctic Expedition cruise. Seven IRD events appeared at MIS 7, 5, 3 and 1. These IRD were carried in massive icebergs, which were exported to the Beaufort Sea through the M’Clure Strait Ice Stream, Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and then transported into the Chukchi Basin by the Beaufort Gyre. Low IRD deposition occurred during the glacial times when more extended ice cover and weakened Beaufort Gyre, while the open water condition and the intensified Beaufort Gyre during interglacial periods favored the IRD deposition. Therefore, the IRD events not only indicate the provenance of coarser detritus and ice export events, but also reflect the evolutionary histories of the Beaufort Gyre and North American ice sheet. Seven light Nps-δ 18O and -δ 13C excursions could respond to enhanced rates of sea ice formation resulting in the production and sinking of isotopically light brines, but was irrelevant to the warm Atlantic water and freshwater inputs. Whereas, the heavy Nps-δ18O and -δ 13C values separately reflect the lessened Arctic freshwater and Pacific water, and well-ventilated surface water from the continental shelf and halocline water. Variations of CaCO3 content and planktonic foraminiferal abundance during the interglacial and glacial periods can demonstrate the incremental or diminishing input of the Atlantic water, while the total organic carbon (TOC) and opal contents increased and decreased during the glacial and interglacial periods, respectively, which could be related to the TOC degradation, opal dissolution and redox conditions of interface between the bottom water and sediments.

Primary productivity has played an important role in the global carbon cycle during the Quaternary. The average Corg/N ratio was 7.0 from the core MD97-2140 in the West Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP) over the last 1 755 ka, which indicates a main contribution of marine organic carbon to the organic matter in the sediments. Large fluctuations in mass accumulation rates (MARs) of biogenics and lithogenics from this core since the marine isotope stage (MIS) 6 reflected the moderate variability in oceanographic condition, while little fluctuations in MAR-biogenics and -lithogenics from the MIS 59 to MIS 7 implied the relatively stable and uniform oceanographic condition, although the sea surface temperatures (SSTs) probably fluctuated by ca. 5 °C. MAR-organic since the MIS 6 increased evidently during the glacial periods, which ascribed to terrestrial inputs, including lithogenic matter and dissolved nutrient, which also contribute to stimulating primary productivity. The results compared among the four cores in the WPWP since the MIS 9 indicate that in the western sector with the shallow thermocline, high primary productivity during the glacial periods was controlled by wind-induced surface water mixing, upwelling, and terrestrial inputs, while in the central and eastern sectors, the little different medium to low productivity might have been made by more intense upwelling driven by strong winds because the thicker warm surface water pool and the deeper thermocline prevented nutrient-bearing water from upwelling to upper water column even during the glacial times.

The late Quaternary ice rafted detritus (IRD) events in the Chukchi Basin, western Arctic Ocean are indications of the provenance of the coarser detritus and ice export events, and also document the evolutionary histories of Beaufort Gyre and the North American Ice Sheet (NAIS). The sediment of core M03 from the Chukchi Basin was selected to study the regional response to the ice export events and the NAIS variability. The stratigraphic framework of M03 was established by a combination of lithological features and downcore color change cycles, AMS14C dating with foraminifera abundance and IRD events. The core was also compared with the adjacent core NWR 5 from the Northwind Ridge area. The core extends back to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 7. A sedimentary hiatus of 10–20 ka might occur between 16 to 20 cm core depth. Seven IRD events are distinguished from the studied core and are presented during the early MIS 1, MIS 3, MIS 5 and late MIS 7. These IRD are transported by sea ice and icebergs, which were exported to the Beaufort Sea from the M’Clure Strait Ice Stream, Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and brought to the Chukchi Basin by the Beaufort Gyre.

Particulate fluxes investigated in the central South China Sea (SCS) during 1993–1996 indicate that opal flux can be used to show primary productivity change, which provides a foundation for tracing the evolutionary relationship between the surface productivity and East Asian monsoon in the SCS during the late Quaternary glacial and interglacial periods. Based on the studies of opal % and their mass accumulation rates (MAR) at the six sites recovered from the SCS during the “Resolution” ODP Leg 184 and “Sonne” 95 cruise of the Sino-Germany cooperation, opal % and their MARs increased evidently in the northern sites since 470–900 ka, and they enhanced and reduced, respectively, during the glacial and interglacial periods. Whereas they increased obviously in the southern sites since 420–450 ka, and they augmented and declined, respectively, during the interglacial and glacial periods. The variability in opal % and their MARs in the late Quaternary glacial cyclicity indicate the “seesaw” pattern of surface productivity in the SCS. The winter monsoon intensified during the glacial periods, surface productivity increased and decreased, respectively, in the northern and southern SCS. The summer monsoon strengthened during the interglacial periods, surface productivity increased and decreased, respectively, in the southern and northern SCS. The cross spectral analyses between the opal % in the northern and southern SCS during the Quaternary and global ice volume (δ 18O) and orbital forcing (ETP) indicate that the East Asian winter and summer monsoons could be ascribed to the different drive mechanisms. On the orbital time scale, the global ice volume change could be a dominant factor for the winter monsoon intension and temporal variations. As compared with the winter monsoon, the correlative summer solar radiation with the obliquity and precession in the Northern Hemisphere could be a mostly controlling factor for the summer monsoon intension and temporal variations.

Radiolarians in surface sediments along transects from the shelf edge, along the slope into the deep basin of the northern Bering Sea are dominated by Stylochlamydium venustum, Antarctissa? sp. 1, the Spongodiscidae (juvenile), Pseudodictyophimus gracilipes, Ceratospyris borealis, the Plagoniidae (Phormacantha group and Plectacantha group), Siphocampe arachnea, Cycladophora davisiana and Spongotrochus glacialis. This dominance is most extreme on the shelf edge and slope, where S. venustum, Antarctissa? sp. 1, the Spongodiscidae (juvenile), the Plagoniidae and S. glacialis have their highest relative abundance. There is thus a close relation between radiolarian distribution and the high productivity of the “Bering Sea Green Belt” (BSGB) due to periodic sea ice melt. The radiolarian depth distribution patterns indicate that some radiolarian species have specific ecological preferences. S. venustum, the Spongodiscidae (juvenile), and S. glacialis live close to the surface water under relatively low-temperature and low-salinity conditions due to sea ice melting or melt water influx. Antarctissa? sp. 1 appears to dwell mainly in surface to subsurface waters, but has not been recorded in trap samples of the Bering Sea. The Plagoniidae probably live in subsurface and intermediate waters. S. arachnea and C. davisiana are intermediate to deep dwellers. The close association of these radiolarians with the BSGB and specific water depths provides a valuable reference for paleoenvironmental reconstruction in the region.
