Abstract

We report high-resolution dilatometry on high-quality single crystals of NiTiO3 grown by means of the optical floating-zone technique. The anisotropic magnetic phase diagram is constructed from thermal expansion and magnetostriction studies up to B=15T and magnetization studies in static (15T) and pulsed (60T) magnetic fields. Our data allow to quantitatively study magneto-elastic coupling and to determine uniaxial pressure dependencies. While the entropy changes are found to be of magnetic nature, Gr\"{u}neisen analysis implies only one relevant energy scale in the whole low-temperature regime. Thereby, our data suggest that the observed structural changes due to magneto-elastic coupling and previously reported magnetodielectric coupling[1] are driven by the same $magnetic$ degrees of freedom that lead to long-range magnetic order in NiTiO3, which in turn, establishes a linear magnetodielectric coupling in this compound.

Abstract

Bringing together cancer genomes from different projects increases power and allows the investigation of pan-cancer, molecular mechanisms. However, working with whole genomes sequenced over several years in different sequencing centres requires a framework to compare the quality of these sequences. We used the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes cohort as a test case to construct such a framework. This cohort contains whole cancer genomes of 2832 donors from 18 sequencing centres. We developed a non-redundant set of five quality control (QC) measurements to establish a star rating system. These QC measures reflect known differences in sequencing protocol and provide a guide to downstream analyses and allow for exclusion of samples of poor quality. Abstract

A macroscopic single crystal of $\gamma_{\rm II}$-Li\(_2\)FeSiO\(_4\) has been grown by means of the high-pressure optical floating-zone technique. Static magnetic susceptibility $\chi$ implies that the tetrahedrally-coordinated Fe$^{2+}$ ions are in the high-spin, $S=2$, state. While a sharp decrease in $\chi$ implies long-range antiferromagnetic order below \tn\ = 17.0(5)~K, the presence of a broad maximum at $T_{\rm m} = 28$~K suggests quasi-low-dimensional magnetism. Applying magnetic fields along the easy magnetic $a$-axis yields additional contributions to the susceptibility $\partial M/\partial B$ and magnetostriction for $B > 7$~T, and an anomaly at $B\approx 14.8$~T.

10. Bubble-mediated transport of benthic microorganisms into the water column: Identification of methanotrophs and implication of seepage intensity on transport efficiency

Abstract

Benthic microorganisms transported into the water column potentially influence biogeochemical cycles and the pelagic food web structure. In the present study six gas-releasing vent sites in the Coal Oil Point seep field (California) were investigated, and the dislocation of microorganisms from the sediment into the water column via gas bubbles released from the seabed was documented. It was found that the methanotrophs transport efficiency was dependent on the volumetric gas flow, with the highest transport rate of 22.7 × 103 cells mLgas-1 at a volumetric gas flow of 0.07 mLgas s-1, and the lowest rate of 0.2 × 103 cells mLgas-1 at a gas flow of 2.2 mLgas s-1. A simple budget approach showed that this bubble-mediated transport has the potential to maintain a relevant part of the water-column methanotrophs in the seep field. The bubble-mediated link between the benthic and pelagic environment was further supported by genetic analyses, indicating a transportation of methanotrophs of the family Methylomonaceae and oil degrading bacteria of the genus Cycloclasticus from the sediment into the water column. These findings demonstrate that the bubble-mediated transport of microorganisms influences the pelagic microbial abundance and community composition at gas-releasing seep sites.

Abstract

Thermodynamic properties as well as low-energy magnon excitations of $S=1$ honeycomb-layered Na$_3$Ni$_2$SbO$_6$ have been investigated by high-resolution dilatometry, static magnetisation, and high-frequency electron spin resonance studies in magnetic fields up to 16 T. At $T_{\rm N}$ = 16.5 K, there is a tricritical point separating two distinct antiferromagnetic phases AF1 and AF2 from the paramagnetic regime. In addition, our data imply short-range antiferromagnetic correlations at least up to $\sim 5\cdot T_{\rm N}$. Well below $T_{\rm N}$, the magnetic field $B_{\rm C1}\approx$ 9.5 T is needed to stabilize AF2 against AF1. The thermal expansion and magnetostriction anomalies at $T_{\rm N}$ and $B_{\rm C1}$ imply significant magnetoelastic coupling, both of which associated with a sign change of $\partial L/\partial B$. The transition at $B_{\rm C1}$ is associated with softening of the antiferromagnetic resonance modes observed in the electron spin resonance spectra. The anisotropy gap $\Delta = 360$ GHz implies considerable uniaxial anisotropy. We conclude the crucial role of axial anisotropy favoring the AF1 spin structure over the AF2 one. While the magnetostriction data disprove a simple spin-flop scenario at $B_{\rm C1}$, the nature of a second transition at $B_{\rm C2}\approx$ 13 T remains unclear. Both the sign of the magnetostriction and Gr\"uneisen analysis suggest the short-range correlations at high temperatures to be of AF2-type.

Abstract

Diel cycle is of enormous biological importance as it imposes daily oscillation in environmental conditions, which temporally structures most ecosystems. Organisms developed biological time-keeping mechanisms – circadian clocks – that provide a significant fitness advantage over competitors by optimising the synchronisation of their biological activities. While circadian clocks are ubiquitous in Eukaryotes, they are so far only characterised in Cyanobacteria within Prokaryotes. However, growing evidence suggests that circadian clocks are widespread in the bacterial and archaeal domains. As Prokaryotes are at the heart of crucial environmental processes and are essential to human health, unravelling their time-keeping systems provides numerous applications in medical research, environmental sciences, and biotechnology. In this review, we elaborate on how novel circadian clocks in Prokaryotes offer research and development perspectives. We compare and contrast the different circadian systems in Cyanobacteria and discuss about their evolution and taxonomic distribution. We necessarily provide an updated phylogenetic analysis of bacterial and archaeal species that harbour homologs of the main cyanobacterial clock components. Finally, we elaborate on new potential clock-controlled microorganisms that represent opportunities of ecological and industrial relevance in prokaryotic groups such as anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria, methanogenic archaea, methanotrophs or sulphate-reducing bacteria. Abstract

Wir berichten über die Synthese und Charakterisierung einer Reihe von weitgehend luftstabilen Diorganyl‐bis(pyridylimino)isoindolid(BPI)−Aluminiumkomplexen und deren Reaktivität durch elektronische Anregung mittels sichtbarem Licht. Der redox‐aktive, "nicht‐unschuldige" BPI‐Pinzettenligand ermöglicht eine effiziente Charge‐Transfer‐Homolyse der Al−C‐Bindung. Dadurch dienen die vorgestellten Verbindungen als Ausgangsmaterialien für die Generierung von kohlenstoffzentrierten Radikalen. Die photo‐induzierte homolytische Spaltung der Al−C‐Bindung wurde mittels stationärer und transienter UV/Vis‐Spektroskopie, Abfangexperimenten der entsprechenden Radikale, sowie EPR‐ und NMR‐Spektroskopie analysiert und zudem mithilfe von quantenchemischen Rechnungen untersucht. Studien zur Reaktivität der entsprechenden Aluminiumkomplexe ermöglichten deren Nutzung als Reagenzien in Giese‐artigen Reaktionen und der Alkylierung von organischen Carbonylverbindungen, wobei Hinweise auf einen Wechsel von radikalischen zu polaren Mechanismen (radical‐polar‐crossover) gefunden wurden. Durch diese Arbeit wurde ein vertieftes Verständnis der physikalischen Hintergründe und der ablaufenden photochemischen Prozesse generiert, wodurch eine neue Strategie der Reaktionskontrolle von luftstabilen Organometallverbindungen des Aluminiums etabliert wurde. Abstract

We report on the synthesis and characterization of a series of (mostly) air‐stable diorganyl bis(pyridylimino) isoindolide (BPI) aluminum complexes and their chemistry upon visible‐light excitation. The redox non‐innocent BPI pincer ligand allows for efficient charge transfer homolytic processes of the title compounds. This makes them a universal platform for the generation of carbon‐centered radicals. The photo‐induced homolytic cleavage of the Al−C bonds was investigated by means of stationary and transient UV/Vis spectroscopy, spin trapping experiments, as well as EPR and NMR spectroscopy. The experimental findings were supported by quantum chemical calculations. Reactivity studies enabled the utilization of the aluminum complexes as reactants in tin‐free Giese‐type reactions and carbonyl alkylations under ambient conditions, which both indicated radical‐polar crossover behavior. A deeper understanding of the physical fundamentals and photochemical process was provided, furnishing in turn a new strategy to control the reactivity of bench‐stable aluminum organometallics. Abstract

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DwH) Oil spill released an enormous volume of oil into the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), prompting the widespread use of chemical dispersants like Corexit® EC9500A. The ecological consequences of this treatment, especially when combined with natural factors such as sunlight, remain unexplored in the context of marine bacterial communities' dynamics. To address this knowledge gap, our study employed a unique metaproteomic approach, investigating the combined effects of sunlight, crude Macondo surrogate oil, and Corexit on GoM microbiome across different mesocosms. Exposure to oil and/or Corexit caused a marked change in community composition, with a decrease in taxonomic diversity relative to controls in only 24 hours. Hydrocarbon (HC) degraders, particularly those more tolerant to Corexit and phototoxic properties of crude oil and/or Corexit, proliferated at the expense of more sensitive taxa. Solar radiation exacerbated these effects in most taxa. We demonstrated that sunlight increased the dispersant's toxicity, impacting on community structure and functioning. These functional changes were primarily directed by oxidative stress with upregulated proteins and enzymes involved in protein turnover, general stress response, DNA replication and repair, chromosome condensation, and cell division. These factors were more abundant in chemically treated conditions, especially in the presence of Corexit compared to controls. Oil treatment significantly enhanced the relative abundance of Alteromonas, an oil-degrading Gammaproteobacteria. In combined oil-Corexit treatments, the majority of identified protein functions were assigned to Alteromonas, with strongly expressed proteins involved in membrane transport, motility, carbon and amino acid metabolism and cellular defense mechanisms. Marinomonas, one of the most active genera in dark conditions, was absent from the light treatment. Numerous metabolic pathways and HC-degrading genes provided insights into bacterial community adaptation to oil spills. Key enzymes of the glyoxylate bypass, enriched in contaminant-containing treatments, were predominantly associated with Rhodobacterales and Alteromonadales. Several proteins related to outer membrane transport, photosynthesis, and nutrient metabolisms were characterized, allowing predictions of the various treatments on biogeochemical cycles. Earth's climate history is often understood by breaking it down into constituent climatic epochs.sup.1. Over the Common Era (the past 2,000 years) these epochs, such as the Little Ice Age.sup.2-4, have been characterized as having occurred at the same time across extensive spatial scales.sup.5. Although the rapid global warming seen in observations over the past 150 years does show nearly global coherence.sup.6, the spatiotemporal coherence of climate epochs earlier in the Common Era has yet to be robustly tested. Here we use global palaeoclimate reconstructions for the past 2,000 years, and find no evidence for preindustrial globally coherent cold and warm epochs. In particular, we find that the coldest epoch of the last millennium--the putative Little Ice Age--is most likely to have experienced the coldest temperatures during the fifteenth century in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, during the seventeenth century in northwestern Europe and southeastern North America, and during the mid-nineteenth century over most of the remaining regions. Furthermore, the spatial coherence that does exist over the preindustrial Common Era is consistent with the spatial coherence of stochastic climatic variability. This lack of spatiotemporal coherence indicates that preindustrial forcing was not sufficient to produce globally synchronous extreme temperatures at multidecadal and centennial timescales. By contrast, we find that the warmest period of the past two millennia occurred during the twentieth century for more than 98 per cent of the globe. This provides strong evidence that anthropogenic global warming is not only unparalleled in terms of absolute temperatures.sup.5, but also unprecedented in spatial consistency within the context of the past 2,000 years. Abstract

Science gateways represent a framework to implement, integrate, and provide service to a scientific user community. But often additional requirements have to be met and other tools have to be used to implement and link e.g. data publishing, search, and metadata annotation. Instead of integrating every necessary function or tool into a monolithic science gateway, the Science Data Center BioDATEN (https://portal.biodaten.info/) experiments with a lateral approach. A HUBzero-based science gateway is implemented in parallel to other components such as InvenioRDM for data publishing, VuFind for data search, and a homebrew tool to annotate metadata. These components are connected by a single sign-on infrastructure that offers seamless user integration. This topology in combination with the tools and services implemented helps to make research data FAIR data while reducing effort and enhancing usability. These services are implemented on de.NBI Cloud infrastructure adding extra reliability and sustainability to research data management.

Aus der langen Reihe von Büchern, die Wilhelm Hausenstein schrieb, sticht das eine, um das es hier geht, unübersehbar hervor; oder sollte man sagen, dass es aus der Reihe fällt? Dennoch, oder eben deshalb, ist es so oft wie kein anderes nach seiner ersten Veröffentlichung, 1948 bei Karl Alber, immer wieder neu aufgelegt worden: 1958 bei Herder, 1976 im Süddeutschen Verlag, 1980 im Deutschen Taschenbuch-Verlag. Das Buch heißt: „Die Masken des Komikers Karl Valentin“. Ihm war, 1932 bei Knorr & Hirth, schon „Das Karl Valentin Buch“ vorausgegangen, als „Erstes und einziges Bilderbuch von Karl Valentin, über ihn und Lisl [sic] Karlstadt, mit Vorwort und ernsthafter Lebensbeschreibung und Bildunterschriften von ihm selbst, sowie zwei Aufsätzen von Tim Klein und Wilhelm Hausenstein“. Und nun, 2019, ist es noch einmal erschienen, bei Schirmer/Mosel, schöner als je zuvor.

Abstract

Konrad (erst später: Conrad) Gröber [1] wurde am 1. April 1872 in Meßkirch geboren; der Vater war Schreiner, und alles deutete darauf hin, dass der Sohn in seine Fußstapfen treten würde. Dieser aber wollte höher hinaus, hatte offenbar nicht nur den Zug, sondern auch das Zeug dazu, und nachdem der gleichnamige Onkel, der als Pfarrer in Wieden im Schwarzwald amtierte, ein gutes Wort eingelegt und einen Zuschuss zugesagt hatte, wurde beschlossen, ihn auf eine höhere Schule zu schicken. Also kam im Jahre 1884 der kleine Konrad nach Konstanz, wo der heilige Konrad, sein Namenspatron, gelebt und gewirkt hatte, und dann sogar noch ins Konradihaus, dessen Zöglinge das örtliche Gymnasium besuchten. Und hier gingen ihm die Augen auf.

Es gibt fromme Bilder, denen man auch außerhalb des Kirchenraums auf Schritt und Tritt begegnet: am häufigsten dem des gekreuzigten Jesus, dann dem seiner Mutter Maria. Doch schon an dritter Stelle folgt, überraschenderweise, das des heiligen Johannes Nepomuk. Dafür, dass er auch im mittelbadischen Raum, und im 18. Jahrhundert, unzählige Male dargestellt wurde, gibt es gute Gründe.

Abstract

In cancer, the primary tumour’s organ of origin and histopathology are the strongest determinants of its clinical behaviour, but in 3% of cases a patient presents with a metastatic tumour and no obvious primary. Here, as part of the ICGC/TCGA Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium, we train a deep learning classifier to predict cancer type based on patterns of somatic passenger mutations detected in whole genome sequencing (WGS) of 2606 tumours representing 24 common cancer types produced by the PCAWG Consortium. Our classifier achieves an accuracy of 91% on held-out tumor samples and 88% and 83% respectively on independent primary and metastatic samples, roughly double the accuracy of trained pathologists when presented with a metastatic tumour without knowledge of the primary. Surprisingly, adding information on driver mutations reduced accuracy. Our results have clinical applicability, underscore how patterns of somatic passenger mutations encode the state of the cell of origin, and can inform future strategies to detect the source of circulating tumour DNA.

Dem Wallfahrtswesen, und nicht nur dem christlichen, liegt der Glaube zugrunde, dass Gnade an bestimmte Orte gebunden und nur an ihnen zu gewinnen sei; an Orte, an denen Wunder geschahen und die sich selber einem Wunder verdankten (oder über besonders wirksame Reliquien verfügten). Und der Glaube, dass man diese Gnade nur dadurch gewann, dass man einen weiten oder wenigstens schweren, beschwerlichen Weg auf sich nahm.

Am 9. Dezember 1933 brach Patrick Leigh Fermor, 18 Jahre alt, in London zu einer Reise auf, die ihn bis nach Istanbul führen und deren Beschreibung ihn viele Jahre später berühmt machen sollte; es gibt kaum etwas, was mit ihr zu vergleichen wäre. Auf seinem Weg kehrte der Reisende für einen Tag in Bruchsal ein, wo ihn das ehemals fürstbischöfliche Schloss mehr beeindruckte als alles davor und vieles danach.

Abstract

Hans Jacob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen ging als Autor des „Simplicissimus“ in das allgemeine Bewusstsein ein; sein sonstiges, umfangreiches Werk ist dagegen weithin in Vergessenheit geraten. (Eine der wenigen Ausnahmen stellt die von Bertolt Brecht wieder aufgegriffene „Landstörzerin Courasche“ dar.) Dabei wäre da und dort noch manches zu entdecken. Im letzten Band der Gesamtausgabe, und in ihm fast an letzter Stelle, findet sich ein im Jahre 1667 erstmals erschienener „Anhang / Etlicher wunderlicher Antiquitäten / so der fliegende Wandersmann zeit seiner wehrenden Reiß / in einer abgelegenen Vestung an dem Meer gelegen / und von den Türcken bewohnet / gesehen und verzeichnet“. Anders als die eigentliche Erzählung vom Wandersmann, die aus dem Französischen übersetzt wurde, scheint dieser Anhang von Grimmelshausen selber zu stammen (der in jenem Jahr erst als Wirt „Zum Silbernen Sternen“ in Gaisbach bei Oberkirch und dann als Schultheiß in Renchen amtierte). In ihm kritisiert er auf nahezu beispiellose Weise den zu seiner Zeit florierenden Reliquienkult: indem er ihn lächerlich macht.
