Recently acquired high-resolution images of nanosecond laser ablation plumes suggest a strong correlation between the internal plume structure and the type of material being ablated. However, the details of this relation are currently not well understood. In this work, we attempt to explore this correlation using a 2D radiation hydrodynamics model to study the dependence of internal plume structure formation on the ablation material. Spatio-temporal emission maps and plume expansion velocities from experimental measurements are compared with the model predictions, including synthetic emission maps. The shape and expansion rate of an outer air plume region are found to be in good agreement for both carbon and aluminum, as are the inner material plume dynamics for carbon ablation. The largest disagreement is observed in the case of a polished aluminum target, where the chaotic inner plume features seen in the experimental images are not observed in the model. The possible physical mechanisms responsible for this discrepancy are discussed. This effort constitutes a continued development toward a predictive model of ablation plume dynamics and chemistry for various materials in extreme environments.

This article investigates the use of photon attenuating inclusions (PAI) for enhancing radiographic imaging of cementitious materials in composite structures. By targeting characteristic high attenuation regions in the photon energy spectrum, PAI can improve void detection in the parent material by increasing contrast in radiographic images. Radiographic imaging of cementitious grout specimens with 5% and 15% weight fractions of candidate PAI materials (Fe, BaCO3, BaSO4) was performed to characterize X-ray attenuation. Virtual radiography simulations were then conducted to evaluate the application of PAI to grout void detection in post-tensioned concrete construction. The simulations demonstrate that grout void detection is most effective when the high energy region of the emission spectrum is near the K-edge of the PAI material.

Laser drilling and cutting of materials is well established commercially, although its throughput and efficiency limit applications. This work describes a novel approach to improve laser drilling rates and reduce laser system energy demands by using a gated continuous wave (CW) laser to create a shallow melt pool and a UV ps-pulsed laser to impulsively expel the melt efficiency and effectively. Here, we provide a broad parametric study of this approach applied to common metals, describing the role of fluence, power, spot size, pulse-length, sample thickness, and material properties. One to two order-of-magnitude increases in the average removal rate and efficiency over the CW laser or pulsed-laser alone are demonstrated for samples of Al and stainless steel for samples as thick as 3 mm and for holes with aspect ratios greater than 10:1. Similar enhancements were also seen with carbon fiber composites. The efficiency of this approach exceeds published values for the drilling of these materials in terms of energy to remove a given volume of material. Multi-laser material removal rates, high-speed imaging of ejecta, and multi-physics hydrodynamic simulations of the melt ejection process are used to help clarify the physics of melt ejection leading to these enhancements. Our study suggests that these high-impulse multi-laser enhancements are due to both laser-induced surface wave instabilities and cavitation of the melt for shallow holes and melt cavitation and ejection for deeper channels.

The results of detailed experiments and high fidelity modeling of melt pool dynamics, droplet ejections and hole drilling produced by periodic modulation of laser intensity are presented. Ultra-high speed imaging revealed that melt pool oscillations can drive large removal of material when excited at the natural oscillation frequency. The physics of capillary surface wave excitation is discussed and simulation is provided to elucidate the experimental results. The removal rates and drill through times as a function of driving frequency is investigated. The resonant removal mechanism is driven by both recoil momentum and thermocapillary force but the key observation is the latter effect does not require evaporation of material, which can significantly enhance the efficiency for laser drilling process. We compared the drilling of holes through a 2 mm-thick Al plate at modulation frequencies up to 20 kHz. At the optimal frequency of 8 kHz, near the resonant response of the melt pool, the drilling efficiency is greater than 10x with aspect ratio of 12:1, and without the collateral damage that is observed in unmodulated CW drilling.

Spray-applied fire-resistive material (SFRM) is prone to debonding, cracking, and spalling in steel moment-frame plastic hinge regions during inelastic seismic response. To evaluate the effect of experimentally observed earthquake-induced SFRM spall patterns on building sidesway response during an ensuing fire, an analytical case study is developed for a steel special moment-frame building with a seismic hazard representative of coastal California. Response data from numerical earthquake simulations indicate that damage to SFRM insulation in beam hinge regions should be anticipated following ground shaking representative of the maximum considered seismic hazard. Thermomechanical post-earthquake fire simulations demonstrate that earthquake-induced SFRM spalling significantly increases thermal degradation in the affected beam hinge regions during fire exposure, leading to pronounced softening of moment-rotation response for the beam-column assemblies. This temperature-induced moment-frame connection softening increases the flexibility of the structural system for sidesway motion and exacerbates drift demands under the action of residual destabilizing forces.

The ablation of magnetron sputtered metal films on fused silica substrates by a 1053 nm, picosecond class laser was studied as part of a demonstration of its use for in-situ characterization of the laser spot under conditions commonly used at the sample plane for laser machining and damage studies. Film thicknesses were 60 and 120 nm. Depth profiles and SEM images of the ablation sites revealed several striking and unexpected features distinct from those typically observed for ablation of bulk metals. Very sharp thresholds were observed for both partial and complete ablation of the films. Partial film ablation was largely independent of laser fluence with a surface smoothness comparable to that of the unablated surface. Clear evidence of material displacement was seen at the boundary for complete film ablation. These features were common to a number of different metal films including Inconel on commercial neutral density filters, stainless steel, and aluminum. We will present data showing the morphology of the ablation sites on these films as well as a model of the possible physical mechanisms producing the unique features observed.

This study investigates the physical processes involved in picosecond pulse (20-28 ps FWHM) laser ablation of Al 6061, 316L stainless steel, and undoped crystalline Si (〈100〉) over a range of laser wavelength (355 nm and 1064 nm) and fluence (0.1-40 J/cm2). Experimental measurements of material ablation rate show enhanced removal at the 355 nm wavelength, primarily due to laser-plasma interaction (LPI) within the ablative plume that approaches an order of magnitude increase over the measured removal at 1064 nm. A transition in the ablation rate at 355 nm is identified around ∼10 J/cm2 above which the removal efficiency increases by a factor of two to three. Multi-physics radiation hydrodynamic simulations, considering LPI effects and utilizing a novel mixed-phase equation of state model, show that the transition in ablation efficiency is due to the onset of melt ejection through cavitation, where laser-driven shock heating sets the depth of melt penetration and the ensuing release wave from the ablation surface drives cavitation through the imposition of tensile strain within the melt. High-speed pump-probe imaging of the ejecta and ejecta collection studies, as well as scanning electron microscopy of the ablation craters, support the proposed cavitation mechanism in the higher fluence range. The ablation process is critically influenced by LPI effects and the thermophysical properties of the material.

Earthquake-induced damage to structural components and spray-applied fire-resistive material (SFRM) in steel gravity frame beam-column connection regions can impact connection performance during an ensuing fire. Bolted connections are particularly susceptible to failure at elevated temperatures due to a rapid loss in bolt capacity with increasing temperature, which occurs at an accelerated rate compared to the thermal degradation of structural steel. In order to characterize structural and SFRM damage over a range of seismic drift demands, two large-scale SFRM insulated beam-column connection assemblies utilizing single-plate and unstiffened seated connection designs, with composite floor slabs, were tested under combined gravity and lateral loading. SFRM cracking, debonding, and spalling were observed during both tests, exposing critical connection elements. This paper presents a numerical modeling approach, developed within the CIVA RT virtual radiography software, for simulating radiographic imaging of Portland cement-based materials. The modeling approach is validated experimentally for 20 and 30 cm thick Portland cement concrete specimens, which were imaged over a range of source intensities using a 450 keV COMET MXR-451 X-ray tube. Both a discrete coarse aggregate (DCA) model and a computationally efficient homogenized concrete (HC) model were investigated. The study found that for concrete sections thicker than 10 cm, the HC model provides radiation transmission predictions comparable to the DCA model, which was attributed to the increase in photon scattering with specimen thickness. The experimental validation study utilized film-based radiography and considered target optical density measurements of 1.0, 2.0, and 3.5. In general, numerical predictions from the virtual radiography model were in good agreement with the experimental data. For the 20 cm thick specimens, relative error in the numerical predictions ranged from 18 to 20 %. Relative error in numerical predictions for the 30 cm thick specimens ranged from 4 to 8 %. The improvement in model prediction accuracy for the thicker specimens was attributed to increased filtration of lower energy radiation, which reduced the influence of approximation error in the lower energy region of the photon emission spectrum.

Nanodrug-carrier delivery in the blood stream is strongly influenced by nanoparticle (NP) dispersion. This paper presents a numerical study on NP transport and dispersion in red blood cell (RBC) suspensions under shear and channel flow conditions, utilizing an immersed boundary fluid-structure interaction model with a lattice Boltzmann fluid solver, an elastic cell membrane model and a particle motion model driven by both hydrodynamic loading and Brownian dynamics. The model can capture the multiphase features of the blood flow. Simulations were performed to obtain an empirical formula to predict NP dispersion rate for a range of shear rates and cell concentrations. NP dispersion rate predictions from the formula were then compared to observations from previous experimental and numerical studies. The proposed formula is shown to accurately predict the NP dispersion rate. The simulation results also confirm previous findings that the NP dispersion rate is strongly influenced by local disturbances in the flow due to RBC motion and deformation. The proposed formula provides an efficient method for estimating the NP dispersion rate in modeling NP transport in large-scale vascular networks without explicit RBC and NP models.
