Abstract

Protracted involvement in the American revolution led the citizens of Westchester County, NY, to eschew the politics of the two combatants and rely instead on a selfish pursuit of material security. The county's citizens were victims of both the British and Continental Armies. Therefore, they felt allegiance to neither and sought satisfaction based on personal gain rather than on patriotism or national self-determination. Other citizens, whose privations were not as constant, were likely to exhibit greater allegiance to one side or the other.
