Jets impinging on a movable bed of particles can lead to strong local scouring effects. Submerged jets, which in practice frequently show periodical velocity fluctuations, can either lead to dangerous scouring near hydraulic structures, or be put to technical use due to their strong erosion capacity. Unwanted effects are found, for example, in the erosion of the bottom of navigable waterways by ship propellers, whereas in dredging high velocity jets are successfully used for loosening hardpacked sandy soils, or also for submarine underground-laying of pipes. Furthermore, the flow field of impinging jets is of interest for hovercrafts end for vertical takeoffs, and also for numerous applications in chemical engineering. In order to control the wanted or unwanted scouring effects of impinging jets, it is necessary to know in detail both the flow field and the scouring effect of this flow configuration. Therefore, on experimental investigation of an axi-symetrical, vertical, submerged jet impinging on a horizontal sand bed of uniform grain size was studied. Particular attention was paid to the quantification of the influence of a pulsation of the jet velocity, which under certain geometrical and flow conditions causes en increase of the scouring rates.

Vertikale Strahlen können beim Auftreffen auf bewegliche Sohlen zu beachtlichen Erosionen führen. Zur Vermeidung von Erosionsgefahren an wasserbaulichen Anlagen und zum effektiven Einsatz von Wasserstrahlen bei der Lockerung und Erosion von natürlichen Böden ist eine systematische Untersuchung der Erosionswirkung von Strahlen mit und ohne Geschwindigkeitspulsation erforderlich. Das Teilprojekt B2 im Sonderforschungsbereich 80 ist deshalb der Erforschung der Wechselwirkungen zwischen Strahlströmung und Erosion gewidmet und soll anhand experimenteller Untersuchungen und analytischer Betrachtungen Erkenntnisse über den Einfluß der Strömungsparameter auf die Erosion liefern.

Conventional collector basins of natural draft cooling towers have a tendency towards rapid sedimentation. In order to avoid this problem, a shallow type of basin with a system of draining canals is developped. Numerical calculations supplemented by hydraulic model tests yield depths, velocities and energy losses in the system. Prototype measurements are shown to be in good agreement with numerical and experimental predictions for all modes of operation., Les bassins collecteurs conventionels des tours de réfrigération à courant d'air naturel ont la tendance d'une sédimentation rapide des matières en suspension. Pour éviter ce problème un type de bassin peu profont avec un système de fossés de drainage est développé. La profondeur, la vitésse et la perte d'energie dans le systéme sont obtenues par des calculations numériques suppleé par des essais hydrauliques. Les mesures en prototype sont en bonne concordance avec les prédictions numériques et experiméntales pour tous des modes d'opération.

Im Rahmen der wasserwirtschaftlichen Nutzung der Oberflächengewässer gewinnt die Frage nach der Wechselwirkung zwischen fließenden und angrenzenden stehenden Gewässern im Hinblick auf die Kontrolle und Erhaltung der Wasserqualität zunehmend an Bedeutung. Der wechselseitige Austausch von Wasserinhaltsstoffen (Suspensionen, Sauerstoff, toxische Stoffe und dgl.) zwischen beiden Wasserkörpern hätngt entscheidend davon ab, ob der Strömungszustand stationär oder instationär ist. Die Kenntnis der Austauschvorgänge in natürlichen Gewässern liefert Ansätze zu strömungsmechanischen Verbesserungen von Gewässergütemodellen. Das Ziel der Untersuchungen ist die experimentelle Bestimmung des Massenaustauschs unter stationären und instationären Strömungsbedingungen für Totwassergebiete unterschiedlicher Größe und Form. Hierbei werden Effekte zufolge von Dichteunterschieden, Windschub und Wellen ausgeschlossen und zunächst nur der Austausch konservativer und hydrodynamisch neutraler wasserlöslicher Stoffe (Farbtracer) bestimmt, Der Austauschprozeß selbst sowie dessen Auswirkung auf das Fließgewässer soll in einem eindimensionalen mathematischen Transportmodell aus Ausgangspunkt für ein Gewässergütemodell näherungsweise simuliert werden.

An experimental investigation of erosion of a uniform sand bed by a vertical submerged jet shows that the momentum flux of the jet and the distance between nozzle and sediment determines the rate of scour. Under fully turbulent conditions, the relative dimensions of the scour hole depend only upon the time parameter and the ratio between the fictitious axial jet velocity at the bed and the fall velocity of the sediment particles. There exist two distinct values of this ratio, at which the eroding action of the jet becomes particularly effective. At the same mean volume flux, the erosion rate can be more than doubled by pulsations of the jet velocity. For the relative distance between nozzle and bed investigated, the continuous jet has the least erosion capacity as compared to pulsating jets., L'étude expérimentale de l'affouillement d'un lit de sable nature! par un jet submergé et vertical montre, que la quantité de mouvement et la distance entre la buse et le fond mobile détermine la loi de croissance de l'affouillement. On peut constater que les dimensions relatives de l'affouillement dependent seulement du paramètre de temps et de la vitesse fictive sur l'axe du jet au niveau du fond, par rapport à la vitesse de chute des grains. Pour deux différentes voleurs de la proportion de ces vitesses, il y a un affouillement extrème à cause du jet. Un jet pulsant possède plus que la double capacité d'érosion qu'un jet permanent avec le même débit volume moyen. A la distance recherchée le jet permanent effectue le minimum de volume d'affouillement comparé aux jets pulsants.

Der Bedarf der Industrie an Brauch- und Kühlwasser muß in hochindustrialisierten und dichtbesiedelten Ländern wie der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zu einem großen Teil aus Oberflächenwasser gedeckt werden. Bei der Entnahme von Rohwasser aus fließenden Gewässern läßt sich kaum vermeiden, daß gleichzeitig auch mitgeführte Feststoffe entnommen werden, die durch entsprechende Aufbereitungsmaßnahmen dem Rohwasser entzogen werden müssen. Um Investitionen und Betriebskosten der Reinigungsanlagen auf ein wirtschaftliches Maß zu beschränken, ist es erforderlich, die in den Entnahmestrom gelangenden Feststoffe durch eine hydraulisch günstige Gestaltung des Entnahmebauwerks auf ein Minimum zu reduzieren.

Die hydraulischen Probleme beim Entwurf der Bauwerke im druckfreien Teil des Kühlwasserkreislaufs (Entnahme- und Verteilerbauwerk, Kraftschlußbecken, Kühltasse) werden beschrieben. Es werden die Anforderungen an die hydraulische Leistungsfähigkeit des Kühlsystems zur Realisierung von Frischwasser-, Ablauf-, Kreislauf- und Mischkühlung skizziert, sowie versuchstechnische und numerische Lösungsmöglichkeiten an Hand ausgeführter repräsentativer Untersuchungen an bestehenden und geplanten Kraftwerken aufgezeigt., Hydraulic design problems of the structures in the free-surface part of the recirculating system (intake and distribution structure, control weir, cooling tower) are described. The capacity of the cooling system required for realization of once-through cooling, blow-down, recirculation and mixed mode operation is discussed, and experimental and numerical methods of solution are illustrated by means of several representative investigations of existing and planned installations.

Tiefgetauchte Strahlen können auf beweglichen Gewässersohlen erhebliche Auskolkungen hervorrufen. Die Erosionswirkung ist stark abhängig von der Größe des hydrodynamischen Sohldrucks und der Durchlässigkeit des körnigen Sohlmaterials. Abhängig von der Intensität des Strahlangriffs bilden sich zwei charakteristische Kolkformen mit unterschiedlichem Auskolkungsverhalten aus. Periodische Pulsationen der Strahlgeschwindigkeit verändern das Strömungsfeld in Sohlennähe und bewirken eine Steigerung der Erosionsrate., Submerged jets impinging on a movable sediment bed have a strong scouring capacity. The scouring effect depends on the hydrodynamic wall pressure at the impinging region and the permeability of the bed material. Two characteristic scour forms with different erosion and transport pattern can be observed. Periodical jet velocity fluctuations improve the flow conditions at the bottom and enhance the scouring rate.

The hydraulic design of spillways, with high specific discharge usually requires model investigations. Whereas standard small-scale models are sufficient for the assessment of the general flow pattern, studies on cavitation control by means of aeration have to be conducted in detail models at considerably larger scales. Detail models of aeration grooves are studied in order to optimize the geometry and to determine the air entrainment of the grooves. The large model scale necessitates the use of models which represents only a small fraction of the width and length of the spillway. Such sectional models allow only an investigation of a single aeration groove in a given approach flow. This paper presents a hydraulic model study of the spillway of Laiban Dam on the Philippines, which is part of the Manila Water Supply Project III.
