In this research note, inspired by the SI in ALR 'finding truth in fiction' [Justin Harmon and Rudy Dunlap. 2021. "Leisure Seen Differently: Conclusion to the Special Issue on 'Finding Truth in Fiction'." Annals of Leisure Research, Finding Truth in Fiction 24: 646-651], we explore the potential of fiction as a tool for research and pedagogy in leisure studies. Our analytical focus is Terra Ludus [Bruce 2016a. Terra Ludus: A Novel About Media, Gender and Sport. Rotterdam: Sense Publishers], a dystopian novel set in an imagined (near) future world that has women's sport as the backdrop. Based on our own readings of Terra Ludus, and an interview with the author (July 2020) about her aims in the production of this work, we explore fiction's potential role in leisure studies research overall and the possibilities of the creative non-fiction genre specifically. Activewear (clothing designed specifically for fitness and functional movement) has become a hugely popular fashion style for women around the world. Scholars have critiqued the activewear industry for reproducing postfeminist and neoliberal discourses, with advertising and marketing primarily featuring heteronormative women's bodies (thin, toned, white, young), with a strong emphasis on consumption and choice. In this article, we contribute to the literature on activewear and feminist consumption practices to examine how women consumers of activewear clothing understand and respond to postfeminist discourses inherent in the industry. In so doing, we speak to how the often-critiqued idealised femininity is 'taken-up' and interrogated by women activewear consumers. Specifically, we draw upon focus groups and interviews conducted with women from New Zealand, examining how some women are complicit in the production of particular femininities, while others are critical of the industry partaking in an array of everyday 'acts of resistance' against (and within) the industry. We conclude with a brief discussion of some of the women-led changes occurring within the activewear market. Ultimately, this article highlights the complexities and attitudes of some women activewear consumers and their contribution (and challenges) to the production of femininity within society. Adventure as a form of contemporary recreation is growing in popularity, and seen as a way to stimulate economic growth via tourism, and to promote personal and community development. However, the risk-taking appeal it provides has led to high-profile serious injuries and deaths. In Brazil and Aotearoa/New Zealand, the families of victims involved in fatal accidents demanded that their governments provide greater regulation. National public policy proposals followed. Our interpretive research used observation, interviews, and document analysis to investigate the development of pioneer policies (2002–2016) on adventure recreation regulation in these two countries. Bourdieu's concept of field was used to understand adventure as a form of leisure, which crosses the boundaries between sport and tourism, and, as we show, is a site of contestation. This study shows that many of the challenges experienced in developing national public policies for adventure activities in Brazil, were also found in Aotearoa. The discussion highlights that adventure as recreation and leisure is a hybrid field, requiring inter-sector understanding in addressing risk management. The market-centred model evident in tourism in both countries reinforces profit, often to the detriment of access equity, environmental and intercultural sensibility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
