Abstract

Electronic correlation is believed to play an important role in exotic phenomena such as insulator-metal transition, colossal magneto resistance and high temperature superconductivity in correlated electron systems. Recently, it has been shown that electronic correlation may also be responsible for the formation of unconventional plasmons. Herewith, using a combination of angle-dependent spectroscopic ellipsometry, angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and Hall measurements all as a function of temperature supported by first-principles calculations, the existence of low-loss high-energy correlated plasmons accompanied by spectral weight transfer, a fingerprint of electronic correlation, in topological insulator (Bi$_{0.8}$Sb$_{0.2}$)$_2$Se$_3$ is revealed. Upon cooling, the density of free charge carriers in the surface states decreases whereas those in the bulk states increase, and that the newly-discovered correlated plasmons are key to explaining this phenomenon. Our result shows the importance of electronic correlation in determining new correlated plasmons and opens a new path in engineering plasmonic-based topologically-insulating devices.

Abstract

We present calculations of the free-free XUV opacity of warm, solid-density aluminum at photon energies between the plasma frequency at 15 eV and the L-edge at 73 eV, using both density functional theory combined with molecular dynamics and a semi-analytical model in the RPA framework with the inclusion of local field corrections. As the temperature is increased from room temperature to 10 eV, with the ion and electron temperatures equal, we calculate an increase in the opacity in the range over which the degree of ionization is constant. The effect is less pronounced if only the electron temperature is allowed to increase. The physical significance of these increases is discussed in terms of intense XUV-laser matter interactions on both femtosecond and picosecond time-scales., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Low-dimensional systems host many exotic physical properties. Using extended resonant soft x-ray scattering supported with theoretical calculations, we observe concomitantly a Wigner-like crystal in a stripe-like QHKL = (001) superlattice with surprisingly long coherence lengths and new soft x-ray correlated plasmons in WS2. A new electronic transition is found at 125 K upon cooling, which is a transition from two-dimensional ordering to three-dimensional ordering, a result of p–d hybridization anisotropy and electronic correlations. Our result shows the importance of the interplay of long-range electron–electron correlation and short-range electronic screening in determining electronics and optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenides. 19. In situ x-ray diffraction measurements of the c/a ratio in the high-pressure epsilon phase of shock-compressed polycrystalline iron

Abstract

The structure of laser-shock-compressed polycrystalline iron was probed using in situ x-ray diffraction over a pressure range spanning the α-ε phase transition. Measurements were also made of the c/a ratio in the ε phase, which, in contrast with previous in situ x-ray diffraction experiments performed on single crystals and large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are close to those found in high-pressure diamond anvil cell experiments. This is consistent with the observation that significant plastic flow occurs within the nanosecond time scale of the experiment. Furthermore, within the sensitivity of the measurement technique, the fcc phase that had been predicted by MD simulations was not observed. © 2011 American Physical society.

Abstract

The beam of the Free-Electron Laser in Hamburg (FLASH) was focused by a grazing incidence elliptical mirror (32.5 nm and 13.5 nm) and an off-axis parabolic mirror coated with a Si/Mo multilayer (13.5 nm) to 20-micron and 1-micron spot, respectively. The grazing incidence and normal incidence focusing of ∼25-fs pulses with an energy of 10 μJ resulted in an irradiance of 10 13 W/cm 2 and 10 16 W/cm 2 , respectively, at the surface of various solids (Si, Al, Ti, Ta, Si 3 N 4 , BN, a-C/Si, Ni/Si, Cr/Si, Rh/Si, Ce:YAC, poly(methyl methacrylate) ― PMMA, stainless steel, etc.). The optical emission of the plasmas produced under these conditions was registered by a grating (1200 lines/mm and/or 150 lines/mm) spectrometer MS257 (Oriel) equipped with iCCD head (iStar 720, Andor). Surprisingly, only lines belonging to the neutral atoms were observed at intensities around 10 13 W/cm 2 . No spectral lines of ions have been identified in UV-vis spectra emitted from the plasmas formed by the FLASH beam focused in a 20-micron spot. At intensities around 10 16 W/cm 2 , the OE spectra are again dominated by the atomic lines. However, a weak emission of Al + and Al 2+ was registered as well. The abundance ratio of Al/Al + should be at least 100. The plasma has an excitation temperature equivalent to 0.8 eV found by a computer simulation of the aluminum plasma OE spectrum. A broadband emission was also registered, both from the single-element plasmas (typical is for carbon; there were no spectral lines) and the scintillating slabs (on Ce:YAG crystal, both the luminescence bands and the line plasma emission were recorded by the spectrometer).

Abstract

The recent commissioning of a X-ray free-electron laser triggered an extensive research in the area of X-ray ablation of high-Z, high-density materials. Such compounds should be used to shorten an effective attenuation length for obtaining clean ablation imprints required for the focused beam analysis. Compounds of lead (Z=82) represent the materials of first choice. In this contribution, single-shot ablation thresholds are reported for PbWO(4) and PbI(2) exposed to ultra-short pulses of extreme ultraviolet radiation and X-rays at FLASH and LCLS facilities, respectively. Interestingly, the threshold reaches only 0.11 J/cm(2) at 1.55 nm in lead tungstate although a value of 0.4 J/cm(2) is expected according to the wavelength dependence of an attenuation length and the threshold value determined in the XUV spectral region, i.e., 79 mJ/cm(2) at a FEL wavelength of 13.5 nm. Mechanisms of ablation processes are discussed to explain this discrepancy. Lead iodide shows at 1.55 nm significantly lower ablation threshold than tungstate although an attenuation length of the radiation is in both materials quite the same. Abstract

By use of high intensity XUV radiation from the FLASH free-electron laser at DESY, we have created highly excited exotic states of matter in solid-density aluminum samples. The XUV intensity is sufficiently high to excite an inner-shell electron from a large fraction of the atoms in the focal region. We show that soft-x-ray emission spectroscopy measurements reveal the electronic temperature and density of this highly excited system immediately after the excitation pulse, with detailed calculations of the electronic structure, based on finite-temperature density functional theory, in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract

We have focused a beam (BL3) of FLASH (Free-electron LASer in Hamburg: lambda = 13.5 nm, pulse length 15 fs, pulse energy 10-40 mu J, 5Hz) using a fine polished off-axis parabola having a focal length of 270 mm and coated with a Mo/Si multilayer with an initial reflectivity of 67% at 13.5 nm. The OAP was mounted and aligned with a picomotor controlled six-axis gimbal. Beam imprints on poly(methyl methacrylate) -PMMA were used to measure focus and the focused beam was used to create isochoric heating of various slab targets. Results show the focal spot has a diameter of <= 1 mu m. Observations were correlated with simulations of best focus to provide further relevant information.

Abstract

We have focused a beam (BL3) of FLASH (Free-electron LASer in Hamburg: δ=13.5 nm, pulse length 15 fs, pulse energy 10-40 μJ, 5Hz) using a fine polished off-axis parabola having a focal length of 270 mm and coated with a Mo/Si multilayer with an initial reflectivity of 67% at 13.5 nm. The OAP was mounted and aligned with a picomotor controlled six-axis gimbal. Beam imprints on poly(methyl methacrylate) - PMMA were used to measure focus and the focused beam was used to create isochoric heating of various slab targets. Results show the focal spot has a diameter of ≤1 μm producing intensities greater than 1016 W cm-2. Observations were correlated with simulations of best focus to provide further relevant information. This focused XUV laser beam now allows us to begin exploring matter under extreme conditions.

Abstract

The analysis of the radiative properties of plasmas created by XUV and X-ray free electron laser radiations provides a tremendous challenge to researchers to investigate matter under extreme conditions. In the present work we report about the theoretical analysis of the radiation emission of Al heated by the interaction of 10 fs focused (1 μm) free electron laser radiation at 13.5 nm at intensities of about 1016 W/cm2. The data show strong resonance line emission 3l -2l′ from Ne-like Al but also numerous intense broad emission structures in the spectral range from 10-30 nm. Atomic structure analysis indicate that these emission structures might originate from multiple excited states with L-holes. By means of a genetic algorithm we analyze possible excitation channels driven directly by the FLASH free electron laser as well as by heated plasma electrons.
