Abstract

The terms "offshore" and "open ocean" have been used to describe aquaculture sites that are further from the coast or in higher energy environments. Neither term has been clearly defined in the scientific literature nor in a legal context, and the terms are often used interchangeably. These and other related terms (for example "exposed", "high-energy") variously refer to aspects of a site such as the geographic distance from shore or infrastructure, the level of exposure to large waves and strong currents, the geographic fetch, the water depth, or some combination of these parameters. The ICES Working Group (ICES, 2024) on Open Ocean Aquaculture (WGOOA) therefore identified a need to define the terminology to reduce ambiguity for these types of aquaculture sites or more precisely, to: (1) promote a common understanding and avoid misuse for different classifications; (2) enable regulators to identify the characteristics of a marine site; (3) allow farmers to be able to assess or quantitatively compare sites for development; (4) equip developers and producers to identify operational parameters in which the equipment and vessels will need to operate; (5) provide insurers and investors with the terminology to consistently assess risk and premiums; and (6) circumvent the emergence of narratives that root in different cognitive interpretations of the terminology in public discourse. This paper describes the evolution of the use of the term "offshore aquaculture" and define the most relevant parameters to shift to a more definitive and robust term "exposed aquaculture" that can inherently relay clearer information. Adoption of this more definitive definition of "exposed" will allow the user to define a site with more than just distance from shore. Key differences and the importance of these terms are discussed that affect various interest groups. Follow-up articles in this compilation from scientific members of the WGOOA as well as other scientists outside ICES are incorporated that develop a set of definitions and a rigorous exposure index. 5. Heat treatment effects on tribocorrosion resistance of Inconel 718® alloy produced by conventional and laser powder bed fusion methods.

Abstract

The article presents a study of the tribocorrosion phenomenon and its effects on Inconel 718 alloy produced conventionally by extrusion and additively manufactured using the laser powder bed fusion method. In addition, the samples were subjected to a heat treatment process to change their properties. The research was carried out using the pin-on-disk method in 3.5% NaCl. Based on the study, it was found that the material made with additive technology is more resistant to tribocorrosion phenomenon, and the difference from conventionally made material is about 50%. The synergistic effect between friction and corrosion (ΔZ) occurred. However, heat treatment in the AA-2 variant ensures higher hardness and reduces purely mechanical wear (ZM) and the synergy effect (ΔZ). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

7. Study of the Kinetics of Adhesive Bond Formation Using the Ultrasonic Method.

Abstract

Adhesive bonding is widely used in modern industry. It has many advantages—the main one being the reduction in production costs. It also has certain limitations. One of the limitations of adhesive bonds is the relatively long bonding time of the joints. The main objective of this research was to determine the possibility of studying the kinetics of adhesive bond formation using a non-destructive ultrasonic method. A research experiment was planned and carried out. Adhesive specimens were prepared, and their quality changes over time were evaluated. In addition, the change in ultrasonic measures during the testing of these bonds was evaluated, as well as the hardness of the adhesive. In this study, the choice of test apparatus was made, in particular ultrasonic probes for the adhesive used and the materials to be bonded. The choice of adhesive was also made, for one in which bonding phenomena occur uniformly throughout the volume. This work examined the changes in the mechanical strength and hardness with time. The tests showed that the greatest changes in mechanical strength occur within the first 24 h after the bond was made. With the mechanical strength reaching 12.6 Mpa after 216 h, the strength in the first 24 h was 10.36 (for bonded steel sheets). For bonded steel discs, the maximum tensile strength was 26.99 Mpa (after 216 h), with a hardness of 22.93 Mpa during the first 24 h. Also, significant changes were observed in the adhesive hardness during the first 24 h. The hardness of the adhesive after 216 h was 70.4 Shore'a on the D scale, while after 24 h it was 69.4 Shore'a on the D scale. 21. Exercise Training in Patients with Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension and Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

Abstract

Of the 5 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) included, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) patients constituted 20% of the overall pulmonary hypertension (PH) patient population. We did not find any RCTs that evaluated the role of exercise training in patients with CTEPH. The results of this study indicate that exercise training may be effective at improving exercise capacity, as measured by 6-min walk distance, in patients with PH. Another notable finding from this analysis is the lack of adverse events associated with exercise training, suggesting that contrary to widespread perception, exercise training is safe in CTEPH and PAH patients.

22. Pure Scaling Operators at the Integer Quantum Hall Plateau Transition

Abstract

If a longitudinal voltage is applied to a MOSFET subject to low temperature and a strong perpendicular magnetic field, one finds that the transversal conductivity is strictly quantized according to $\frac{ne^2}{h}$ with positive integer $n$. This is called the plateau region. At the same time, the longitudinal conductivity vanishes; this is the integer quantum Hall effect. Changing the magnetic field eventually results in a quantum phase transition between the plateaus. By a central paradigm of statistical physics this transition should be described by a conformal field theory. Starting from the critical Chalker-Coddington network model, which is a discrete model for this transition, we suggest a family of observables as discretizations of conformal primary fields. In the simplest case these reduce to the disorder average of moments of the absolute value square of stationary scattering states of the network evaluated at a specific link $l$ in the presence of a point contact $c$. In a plane network algebraic decay with the distance between $l$ and $c$ is expected. The network model is connected to the supersymmetric vertex model by a duality transformation and the suggested observables correspond to highest weight operators of the symmetry algebra $\fgl_{2n|2n}$. Numerical simulations in cylindrical and rectangular geometries provide strong evidence for the conjecture that these observables have indeed the desired properties. Finally, we address the question of the precise form of the multifractal spectrum of conformal dimensions, which is an important one to ask in view of the correct continuum field theory. The family of observables is, compared to work done in the past two decades, quite extensive and will hopefully contribute to a conclusive answer on the parabolicity of the spectrum.

Abstract

Introduction: Although pneumoperitoneum from necrotizing enterocolitis or spontaneous intestinal perforation is a surgical emergency, risk stratification to determine which neonates benefit from initial peritoneal drainage (PD) is lacking., Methods: Using a single-center retrospective review of very low birth weight neonates under 1500 g who underwent PD for pneumoperitoneum (January 2015 to December 2023) from necrotizing enterocolitis or spontaneous intestinal perforation, two cohorts were created: drain "responders" (patients managed definitively with PD; includes placement of a second drain) and "nonresponders" (patients who underwent subsequent laparotomy or died after PD). Antenatal/postnatal characteristics, periprocedural clinical data, and hospital outcomes were compared between responders and nonresponders using Student's t-test, chi-squared test, or Kruskal-Wallis test as appropriate, with P < 0.05 considered significant., Results: Fifty-six neonates were included: 31 (55%) drain responders and 25 (45%) nonresponders. Birth weight, gestational age, sex, ethnicity, use of postnatal steroids, and enteral feeds were similar between the cohorts. Nonresponders had higher base deficits (-3.4 versus -5.0, P = 0.032) and FiO 2 (0.25 versus 0.52, P = 0.001) after drain placement. Drain responders had significantly shorter lengths of stay (89 versus 148 days, P = 0.014) and lower mortality (6.4% versus 56%, P < 0.001). A subgroup analysis of the nonresponders showed no differences in birth weight, vasopressor requirement, FiO 2 , or postdrain base deficit between nonresponders who had a drain alone versus laparotomy following drain placement., Conclusions: PD remains a viable initial therapy for pneumoperitoneum in premature very low birth weight neonates (< 1500 g), demonstrating clinical response in more than half.
