XMMSL1 J171900.4-353217 is a very-faint X-ray transient that was discovered in 2010 March when it exhibited an outburst. We report on 7 observations, obtained with the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) aboard the Neil Gehrels {\it{Swift}} Observatory between 2010 May to October. By fitting a single absorbed power-law model to the XRT spectra, we infer power-law indices of $\Gamma = 1.8-2.7$ and an absorption column density of $\mathrm{N}_{\mathrm{H}}=(4.6-7.9)\times 10^{22}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$. The inferred $0.5-10$~keV luminosity fluctuated irregularly and peaked at $\mathrm{L}_\mathrm{X}\simeq 10^{35}-10^{36} ~\mathrm{erg~s^{-1}}$ for a distance of $4-12$~kpc. Based on the evolution of the power-law index with varying luminosity, we propose that the source most likely is a transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary located at several kpc. Recent observations have revealed rare, previously unknown flashes of cosmic radio waves lasting from milliseconds to minutes, and with periodicity of minutes to an hour [1-4]. These transient radio signals must originate from sources in the Milky Way, and from coherent emission processes in astrophysical plasma. They are theorised to be produced in the extreme and highly magnetised environments around white dwarfs or neutron stars [5-8]. However, the astrophysical origin of these signals remains contested, and multiple progenitor models may be needed to explain their diverse properties. Here we present the discovery of a transient radio source, ILT J1101+5521, whose roughly minute-long pulses arrive with a periodicity of 125.5 minutes. We find that ILT J1101+5521 is an M dwarf - white dwarf binary system with an orbital period that matches the period of the radio pulses, which are observed when the two stars are in conjunction. The binary nature of ILT J1101+5521 establishes that some long-period radio transients originate from orbital motion modulating the observed emission, as opposed to an isolated rotating star. We conclude that ILT J1101+5521 is likely a polar system where magnetic interaction has synchronised the rotational and orbital periods of the white dwarf [9]. Magnetic interaction and plasma exchange between the two stars may generate the sporadic radio emission. Such mechanisms have been previously theorised [10-13], but not observationally established.

The main science aim of the BlackGEM array is to detect optical counterparts to gravitational wave mergers. Additionally, the array will perform a set of synoptic surveys to detect Local Universe transients and short time-scale variability in stars and binaries, as well as a six-filter all-sky survey down to ~22nd mag. The BlackGEM Phase-I array consists of three optical wide-field unit telescopes. Each unit uses an f/5.5 modified Dall-Kirkham (Harmer-Wynne) design with a triplet corrector lens, and a 65cm primary mirror, coupled with a 110Mpix CCD detector, that provides an instantaneous field-of-view of 2.7~square degrees, sampled at 0.564\arcsec/pixel. The total field-of-view for the array is 8.2 square degrees. Each telescope is equipped with a six-slot filter wheel containing an optimised Sloan set (BG-u, BG-g, BG-r, BG-i, BG-z) and a wider-band 440-720 nm (BG-q) filter. Each unit telescope is independent from the others. Cloud-based data processing is done in real time, and includes a transient-detection routine as well as a full-source optimal-photometry module. BlackGEM has been installed at the ESO La Silla observatory as of October 2019. After a prolonged COVID-19 hiatus, science operations started on April 1, 2023 and will run for five years. Aside from its core scientific program, BlackGEM will give rise to a multitude of additional science cases in multi-colour time-domain astronomy, to the benefit of a variety of topics in astrophysics, such as infant supernovae, luminous red novae, asteroseismology of post-main-sequence objects, (ultracompact) binary stars, and the relation between gravitational wave counterparts and other classes of transients, Comment: Published in PASP

We present the results of a high angular resolution (1.1") and sensitivity (maximum of ~0.1 mJy) radio survey at 1-2 GHz in the Galactic Bulge. This complements the X-ray Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey, and investigates the full radio source population in this dense Galactic region. Radio counterparts to sources at other wavelengths can aid in classification, as there are relatively few types of objects that are reasonably detectable in radio at kiloparsec distances, and even fewer that are detected in both X-rays and radio. This survey covers about 3 square degrees of the Galactic Bulge Survey area (spanning the Galactic coordinate range of -3deg < l < +3deg and +1.6deg < b < +2.1deg as a first look into this region of the Galaxy with this combination of frequency, resolution, and sensitivity. Spectral indices within the observed band of 1-2 GHz were calculated for each source to assist in determining its emission mechanism. We find 1617 unique sources in the survey, 25 of which are radio counterparts to X-ray sources, and about 100 of which are steep-spectrum (alpha <~ -1.4) point sources that are viable pulsar candidates. Four radio sources are of particular interest: a compact binary; an infrared transient with an inverted radio spectrum; a potential transitional millisecond pulsar candidate; and a very steep spectrum radio source with an X-ray and bright infrared counterpart. LS V +44 17 is a persistent Be/X-ray binary (BeXRB) that displayed a bright, double-peaked period of X-ray activity in late 2022/early 2023. We present a radio monitoring campaign of this outburst using the Very Large Array. Radio emission was detected, but only during the second, X-ray brightest, peak, where the radio emission followed the rise and decay of the X-ray outburst. LS V +44 17 is therefore the third neutron star BeXRB with a radio counterpart. Similar to the other two systems (Swift J0243.6+6124 and 1A 0535+262), its X-ray and radio luminosity are correlated: we measure a power law slope $\beta = 1.25^{+0.64}_{-0.30}$ and a radio luminosity of $L_R = (1.6\pm0.2)\times10^{26}$ erg/s at a $0.5-10$ keV X-ray luminosity of $2\times10^{36}$ erg/s (i.e. $\sim 1\%$ $L_{\rm Edd}$). This correlation index is slightly steeper than measured for the other two sources, while its radio luminosity is higher. We discuss the origin of the radio emission, specifically in the context of jet launching. The enhanced radio brightness compared to the other two BeXRBs is the first evidence of scatter in the giant BeXRB outburst X-ray--radio correlation, similar to the scatter observed in sub-classes of low-mass X-ray binaries. Strongly-magnetized ($B\geq10^{12}$ G) accreting neutron stars (NSs) are prime targets for studying the launching of jets by objects with a solid surface; while classical jet-launching models predict that such NSs cannot launch jets, recent observations and models argue otherwise. Transient Be/X-ray binaries (BeXRBs) are critical laboratories for probing this poorly-explored parameter space for jet formation. Here, we present the coordinated monitoring campaigns of three BeXRBs across four outbursts: giant outbursts of SAX 2103.5+4545, 1A 0535+262, and GRO J1008-57, as well as a Type-I outburst of the latter. We obtain radio detections of 1A 0535+262 during ten out of twenty observations, while the other targets remained undetected at typical limits of $20$-$50$ $\mu$Jy. The radio luminosity of 1A 0535+262 positively correlates with its evolving X-ray luminosity, and inhabits a region of the $L_X$-$L_R$ plane continuing the correlation observed previously for the BeXRB Swift J0243.6+6124. We measure a BeXRB $L_X$-$L_R$ coupling index of $\beta = 0.86 \pm 0.06$ ($L_R \propto L_X^\beta$), similar to the indices measured in NS and black hole low-mass X-ray binaries. Strikingly, the coupling's $L_R$ normalisation is $\sim 275$ and $\sim 6.2\times10^3$ times lower than in those two comparison samples, respectively. We conclude that jet emission likely dominates during the main peak of giant outbursts, but is only detectable for close-by or super-Eddington systems at current radio sensitivities. Measuring the time evolution of the effective surface temperature of neutron stars can provide invaluable information on the properties of their dense cores. Here, we report on a new Chandra observation of the transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary HETE J1900.1-2455, which was obtained ~2.5 yr after the end of its ~10-yr long accretion outburst. The source is barely detected during the observation, collecting only six net photons, all below 2 keV. Assuming that the spectrum is shaped as a neutron star atmosphere model we perform a statistical analysis to determine a 1-sigma confidence upper range for the neutron star temperature of ~30-39 eV (for an observer at infinity), depending on its mass, radius and distance. Given the heat injected into the neutron star during the accretion outburst, estimated from data provided by all-sky monitors, the inferred very low temperature suggests that either the core has a very high heat capacity or undergoes very rapid neutrino cooling. While the present data do not allow us to disentangle these two possibilities, both suggest that a significant fraction of the dense core is not superfluid/superconductor. Our modeling of the thermal evolution of the neutron star predicts that it may still cool further, down to a temperature of ~15 eV. The radiative counterpart of the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Centre, Sagittarius A*, displays flaring emission in the X-ray band atop a steady, quiescent level. Flares are also observed in the near-infrared band. The physical process producing the flares is not fully understood and it is unclear if the flaring rate varies, although some recent works suggest it has reached unprecedented variability in recent years. Using over a decade of regular X-ray monitoring of Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, we studied the variations in count rate of Sgr A* on time scales of years. We decomposed the X-ray emission into quiescent and flaring emission, modelled as a constant and power law process, respectively. We found that the complete, multi-year dataset cannot be described by a stationary distribution of flare fluxes, while individual years follow this model better. In three of the ten studied years, the data is consistent with a purely Poissonian quiescent distribution, while for five years only an upper limit of the flare flux distribution parameter could be determined. We find that these possible changes cannot be explained fully by the different number of observations per year. Combined, these results are instead consistent with a changing flaring rate of Sgr A*, appearing more active between 2006-2007 and 2017-2019, than between 2008-2012. We report new radio observations of a sample of thirty-six neutron star (NS) X-ray binaries, more than doubling the sample in the literature observed at current-day sensitivities. These sources include thirteen weakly-magnetised ($B<10^{10}$ G) and twenty-three strongly-magnetised ($B\geq10^{10}$ G) NSs. Sixteen of the latter category reside in high-mass X-ray binaries, of which only two systems were radio-detected previously. We detect four weakly and nine strongly-magnetised NSs; the latter are systematically radio fainter than the former and do not exceed $L_R \approx 3\times10^{28}$ erg/s. In turn, we confirm the earlier finding that the weakly-magnetized NSs are typically radio fainter than accreting stellar-mass black holes. While an unambiguous identification of the origin of radio emission in high-mass X-ray binaries is challenging, we find that in all but two detected sources (Vela X-1 and 4U 1700-37) the radio emission appears more likely attributable to a jet than the donor star wind. The strongly-magnetised NS sample does not reveal a global correlation between X-ray and radio luminosity, which may be a result of sensitivity limits. Furthermore, we discuss the effect of NS spin and magnetic field on radio luminosity and jet power in our sample. No current model can account for all observed properties, necessitating the development and refinement of NS jet models to include magnetic field strengths up to $10^{13}$ G. THESEUS is a medium size space mission of the European Space Agency, currently under evaluation for a possible launch in 2032. Its main objectives are to investigate the early Universe through the observation of gamma-ray bursts and to study the gravitational waves electromagnetic counterparts and neutrino events. On the other hand, its instruments, which include a wide field of view X-ray (0.3-5 keV) telescope based on lobster-eye focusing optics and a gamma-ray spectrometer with imaging capabilities in the 2-150 keV range, are also ideal for carrying out unprecedented studies in time domain astrophysics. In addition, the presence onboard of a 70 cm near infrared telescope will allow simultaneous multi-wavelegth studies. The accretion behaviour in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) at low luminosities, especially at 3500 km/s), which could indicate that it results from an outflow such as a pulsar wind. By studying several epochs of X-ray and near-UV data obtained with XMM-Newton, we find no clear indication that the emission in the two wavebands is connected. Moreover, the luminosity ratio of Lx/Luv >100 is much higher than that observed from neutron star LMXBs that exhibit low-level accretion in quiescence. Taken together, this suggests that the UV and X-ray emission of EXO 0748-676 may have different origins, and that thermal emission from crust-cooling of the neutron star, rather than ongoing low-level accretion, may be dominating the observed quiescent X-ray flux evolution of this LMXB., Comment: 10 pages, 1 table, 4 figures, published in MNRAS. Very faint X-ray transients (VFXTs) are X-ray transients with peak X-ray luminosities ($L_X$) of $L_X\lesssim10^{36}$ erg/s, which are not well-understood. We carried out a survey of 16 square degrees of the Galactic Bulge with the Swift Observatory, using short (60 s) exposures, and returning every 2 weeks for 19 epochs in 2017-18 (with a gap from November 2017 to February 2018, when the Bulge was in sun-constraint). Our main goal was to detect and study VFXT behaviour in the Galactic Bulge across various classes of X-ray sources. In this work, we explain the observing strategy of the survey, compare our results with the expected number of source detections per class, and discuss the constraints from our survey on the Galactic VFXT population. We detected 91 X-ray sources, 25 of which have clearly varied by a factor of at least 10. 45 of these X-ray sources have known counterparts: 17 chromospherically active stars, 12 X-ray binaries, 5 cataclysmic variables (and 4 candidates), 3 symbiotic systems, 2 radio pulsars, 1 AGN, and a young star cluster. The other 46 are of previously undetermined nature. We utilize X-ray hardness ratios, searches for optical/infrared counterparts in published catalogs, and flux ratios from quiescence to outburst to constrain the nature of the unknown sources. Of these 46, 7 are newly discovered hard transients, which are likely VFXT X-ray binaries. Furthermore, we find strong new evidence for a symbiotic nature of 4 sources in our full sample, and new evidence for accretion power in 6 X-ray sources with optical counterparts. We present results from six epochs of quasi-simultaneous radio, (sub-)millimetre, infrared, optical, and X-ray observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI~J1535$-$571. These observations show that as the source transitioned through the hard-intermediate X-ray state towards the soft intermediate X-ray state, the jet underwent dramatic and rapid changes. We observed the frequency of the jet spectral break, which corresponds to the most compact region in the jet where particle acceleration begins (higher frequencies indicate closer to the black hole), evolve from the IR band into the radio band (decreasing by $\approx$3 orders of magnitude) in less than a day. During one observational epoch, we found evidence of the jet spectral break evolving in frequency through the radio band. Estimating the magnetic field and size of the particle acceleration region shows that the rapid fading of the high-energy jet emission was not consistent with radiative cooling; instead the particle acceleration region seems to be moving away from the black hole on approximately dynamical timescales. This result suggests that the compact jet quenching is not caused by local changes to the particle acceleration, rather we are observing the acceleration region of the jet travelling away from the black hole with the jet flow. Spectral analysis of the X-ray emission show a gradual softening in the few days before the dramatic jet changes, followed by a more rapid softening $\sim$1--2\,days after the onset of the jet quenching., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, data provided in the appendices. Swift J1858.6-0814 is a transient neutron star X-ray binary discovered in October 2018. Multi-wavelength follow-up observations across the electromagnetic spectrum revealed many interesting properties, such as erratic flaring on minute timescales and evidence for wind outflows at both X-ray and optical wavelengths, strong and variable local absorption, and an anomalously hard X-ray spectrum. Here, we report on a detailed radio observing campaign consisting of one observation at 5.5/9 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, and nine observations at 4.5/7.5 GHz with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. A radio counterpart with a flat to inverted radio spectrum is detected in all observations, consistent with a compact jet being launched from the system. Swift J1858.6-0814 is highly variable at radio wavelengths in most observations, showing significant variability when imaged on 3-to-5-minute timescales and changing up to factors of 8 within 20 minutes. The periods of brightest radio emission are not associated with steep radio spectra, implying they do not originate from the launching of discrete ejecta. We find that the radio variability is similarly unlikely to have a geometric origin, be due to scintillation, or be causally related to the observed X-ray flaring. Instead, we find that it is consistent with being driven by variations in the accretion flow propagating down the compact jet. We compare the radio properties of Swift J1858.6-0814 with those of Eddington-limited X-ray binaries with similar X-ray and optical characteristics, but fail to find a match in radio variability, spectrum, and luminosity., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

X-ray transients, such as accreting neutron stars, periodically undergo outbursts, thought to be caused by a thermal-viscous instability in the accretion disk. Usually outbursts of accreting neutron stars are identified when the accretion disk has undergone an instability, and the persistent X-ray flux has risen to a threshold detectable by all sky monitors on X-ray space observatories. Here we present the earliest known combined optical, UV, and X-ray monitoring observations of the outburst onset of an accreting neutron star low mass X-ray binary system. We observed a significant, continuing increase in the optical i'-band magnitude starting on July 25, 12 days before the first X-ray detection with Swift/XRT and NICER (August 6), during the onset of the 2019 outburst of SAX J1808.4-3658. We also observed a 4 day optical to X-ray rise delay, and a 2 day UV to X-ray delay, at the onset of the outburst. We present the multiwavelength observations that were obtained, discussing the theory of outbursts in X-ray transients, including the disk instability model, and the implications of the delay. This work is an important confirmation of the delay in optical to X-ray emission during the onset of outbursts in low mass X-ray binaries, which has only previously been measured with less sensitive all sky monitors. Transient LMXBs that host neutron stars (NSs) provide excellent laboratories for probing the dense matter physics present in NS crusts. During accretion outbursts in LMXBs, exothermic reactions may heat the NS crust, disrupting the crust-core equilibrium. When the outburst ceases, the crust cools to restore thermal equilibrium with the core. Monitoring this evolution allows us to probe the dense matter physics in the crust. Properties of the deeper crustal layers can be probed at later times after the end of the outburst. We report on the unexpected late-time temperature evolution (>2000 days after the end of their outbursts) of two NSs in LMXBs, XTE J1701-462 and EXO 0748-676. Although both these sources exhibited very different outbursts (in terms of duration and the average accretion rate), they exhibit an unusually steep decay of ~7 eV in the observed effective temperature (occurring in a time span of ~700 days) around ~2000 days after the end of their outbursts. Furthermore, they both showed an even more unexpected rise of ~3 eV in temperature (over a time period of ~500-2000 days) after this steep decay. This rise was significant at the 2.4{\sigma} and 8.5{\sigma} level for XTE J1701-462 and EXO 0748-676, respectively. The physical explanation for such behaviour is unknown and cannot be straightforwardly be explained within the cooling hypothesis. In addition, this observed evolution cannot be well explained by low-level accretion either without invoking many assumptions. We investigate the potential pathways in the theoretical heating and cooling models that could reproduce this unusual behaviour, which so far has been observed in two crust-cooling sources. Such a temperature increase has not been observed in the other NS crust-cooling sources at similarly late times, although it cannot be excluded that this might be a result of the inadequate sampling obtained at such late times., Comment: accepted for publication by A&A letters

We present low-radio-frequency follow-up observations of AT 2017gfo, the electromagnetic counterpart of GW170817, which was the first binary neutron star merger to be detected by Advanced LIGO-Virgo. These data, with a central frequency of 144 MHz, were obtained with LOFAR, the Low-Frequency Array. The maximum elevation of the target is just 13.7 degrees when observed with LOFAR, making our observations particularly challenging to calibrate and significantly limiting the achievable sensitivity. On time-scales of 130-138 and 371-374 days after the merger event, we obtain 3$\sigma$ upper limits for the afterglow component of 6.6 and 19.5 mJy beam$^{-1}$, respectively. Using our best upper limit and previously published, contemporaneous higher-frequency radio data, we place a limit on any potential steepening of the radio spectrum between 610 and 144 MHz: the two-point spectral index $\alpha^{610}_{144} \gtrsim -2.5$. It is commonly assumed that the properties and geometry of the accretion flow in transient low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) significantly change when the X-ray luminosity decays below $\sim 10^{-2}$ of the Eddington limit ($L_{\rm Edd}$). However, there are few observational cases where the evolution of the accretion flow is tracked in a single X-ray binary over a wide dynamic range. In this work, we use NuSTAR and NICER observations obtained during the 2018 accretion outburst of the neutron star LMXB 4U 1608-52, to study changes in the reflection spectrum. We find that the broad Fe-K$\alpha$ line and Compton hump, clearly seen during the peak of the outburst when the X-ray luminosity is $\sim 10^{37}$ erg/s ($\sim 0.05$ $L_{\rm Edd}$), disappear during the decay of the outburst when the source luminosity drops to $\sim 4.5 \times 10^{35}$ erg/s ($\sim 0.002$ $L_{\rm Edd}$). We show that this non-detection of the reflection features cannot be explained by the lower signal-to-noise at lower flux, but is instead caused by physical changes in the accretion flow. Simulating synthetic NuSTAR observations on a grid of inner disk radius, disk ionisation, and reflection fraction, we find that the disappearance of the reflection features can be explained by either increased disk ionisation ($\log \xi \geq 4.1$) or a much decreased reflection fraction. A changing disk truncation alone, however, cannot account for the lack of reprocessed Fe-K$\alpha$ emission. The required increase in ionisation parameter could occur if the inner accretion flow evaporates from a thin disk into a geometrically thicker flow, such as the commonly assumed formation of an radiatively inefficient accretion flow at lower mass accretion rates., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The nature of very faint X-ray transients (VFXTs) - transient X-ray sources that peak at luminosities $L_X\lesssim10^{36} {\rm erg s^{-1}}$ - is poorly understood. The faint and often short-lived outbursts make characterising VFXTs and their multi-wavelength counterparts difficult. In 2017 April we initiated the Swift Bulge Survey, a shallow X-ray survey of $\sim$16 square degrees around the Galactic centre with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The survey has been designed to detect new and known VFXTs, with follow-up programmes arranged to study their multi-wavelength counterparts. Here we detail the optical and near-infrared follow-up of four sources detected in the first year of the Swift Bulge Survey. The known neutron star binary IGR J17445-2747 has a K4III donor, indicating a potential symbiotic X-ray binary nature and the first such source to show X-ray bursts. We also find one nearby M-dwarf (1SXPS J174215.0-291453) and one system without a clear near-IR counterpart (Swift J175233.9-290952). Finally, 3XMM J174417.2-293944 has a subgiant donor, an 8.7 d orbital period, and a likely white dwarf accretor; we argue that this is the first detection of a white dwarf accreting from a gravitationally focused wind. IGR J17591$-$2342 is a new accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) that was recently discovered in outburst in 2018. Early observations revealed that the source's radio emission is brighter than that of any other known neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (NS-LMXB) at comparable X-ray luminosity, and assuming its likely $\gtrsim 6$ kpc distance. It is comparably radio bright to black hole LMXBs at similar X-ray luminosities. In this work, we present the results of our extensive radio and X-ray monitoring campaign of the 2018 outburst of IGR J17591$-$2342. In total we collected 10 quasi-simultaneous radio (VLA, ATCA) and X-ray (Swift-XRT) observations, which make IGR J17591$-$2342 one of the best-sampled NS-LMXBs. We use these to fit a power-law correlation index $\beta = 0.37^{+0.42}_{-0.40}$ between observed radio and X-ray luminosities ( $L_\mathrm{R}\propto L_\mathrm{X}^{\beta}$). However, our monitoring revealed a large scatter in IGR J17591$-$2342's radio luminosity (at a similar X-ray luminosity, $L_\mathrm{X} \sim 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and spectral state), with $L_\mathrm{R} \sim 4 \times 10^{29}$ erg s$^{-1}$ during the first three reported observations, and up to a factor of 4 lower $L_\mathrm{R}$ during later radio observations. Nonetheless, the average radio luminosity of IGR J17591$-$2342 is still one of the highest among NS-LMXBs, and we discuss possible reasons for the wide range of radio luminosities observed in such systems during outburst. We found no evidence for radio pulsations from IGR J17591$-$2342 in our Green Bank Telescope observations performed shortly after the source returned to quiescence. Aql X-1 is one of the best-studied neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. It was previously targeted using quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray observations during at least 7 different accretion outbursts. Such observations allow us to probe the interplay between accretion inflow (X-ray) and jet outflow (radio). Thus far, these combined observations have only covered one order of magnitude in radio and X-ray luminosity range; this means that any potential radio - X-ray luminosity correlation, $L_R \propto L_X^{\beta}$, is not well constrained ($\beta \approx$ 0.4-0.9, based on various studies) or understood. Here we present quasi-simultaneous Very Large Array and Swift-XRT observations of Aql X-1's 2016 outburst, with which we probe one order of magnitude fainter in radio and X-ray luminosity compared to previous studies ($6 \times 10^{34} < L_X < 3 \times 10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$, i.e., the intermediate to low-luminosity regime between outburst peak and quiescence). The resulting radio non-detections indicate that Aql X-1's radio emission decays more rapidly at low X-ray luminosities than previously assumed - at least during the 2016 outburst. Assuming similar behaviour between outbursts, and combining all available data, this can be modelled as a steep $\beta=1.17^{+0.30}_{-0.21}$ power-law index or as a sharp radio cut-off at $L_X \lesssim 5 \times 10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (given our deep radio upper limits at X-ray luminosities below this value). The structure and composition of the crust of neutron stars plays an important role in their thermal and magnetic evolution, hence in setting their observational properties. One way to study the crust properties is to measure how it cools after it has been heated during an accretion outburst in a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB). Such studies have shown that there is a tantalizing source of heat, of currently unknown origin, that is located in the outer layers of the crust and has a strength that varies between different sources and different outbursts. With the aim of understanding the mechanism behind this "shallow heating", we present Chandra and Swift observations of the neutron star LMXB Aql X-1, obtained after its bright 2016 outburst. We find that the neutron star temperature was initially much lower, and started to decrease at much later time, than observed after the 2013 outburst of the source, despite the fact that the properties of the two outbursts were very similar. Comparing our data to thermal evolution simulations, we infer that the depth and magnitude of shallow heating must have been much larger during the 2016 outburst than during the 2013 one. This implies that basic neutron star parameters that do not change between outbursts, do not play a strong role in shallow heating. Furthermore, it suggests that outbursts with a similar accretion morphology can give rise to very different shallow heating. In 2017, the Be/X-ray transient 4U 0115+63 exhibited a new type-II outburst that was two times fainter than its 2015 giant outburst (in the Swift/BAT count rates). Despite this difference between the two bright events, the source displayed similar X-ray behaviour after these periods. Once the outbursts ceased, the source did not transit towards quiescence directly, but was detected about a factor of 10 above its known quiescent level. It eventually decayed back to quiescence over time scales of months. In this paper we present the results of our Swift monitoring campaign, and an XMM-Newton observation of 4U 0115+63 during the decay of the 2017 type-II outburst, and its subsequent low-luminosity behaviour. We discuss the possible origin of the decaying source emission at this low-level luminosity, which has now been shown as a recurrent phenomenon, in the framework of the two proposed scenarios to explain this faint state: cooling from an accretion-heated neutron-star crust or continuous low-level accretion. Transient neutron star (NS) LMXBs undergo episodes of accretion, alternated with quiescent periods. During an accretion outburst, the NS heats up due to exothermic accretion-induced processes taking place in the crust. Besides the long-known deep crustal heating of nuclear origin, a likely non-nuclear source of heat, dubbed 'shallow heating', is present at lower densities. Most of the accretion-induced heat slowly diffuses into the core on a timescale of years. Over many outburst cycles, a state of equilibrium is reached when the core temperature is high enough that the heating and cooling (photon and neutrino emission) processes are in balance. We investigate how stellar characteristics and outburst properties affect the long-term temperature evolution of a transiently accreting NS. For the first time the effects of crustal properties are considered, particularly that of shallow heating. Using our code NSCool, we tracked the thermal evolution of a NS undergoing outbursts over a period of $10^5$ yr. The outburst sequence is based on the regular outbursts observed from Aql X-1. For each model, we calculated the timescale over which equilibrium was reached and we present these timescales along with the temperature and luminosity parameters of the equilibrium state. We find that shallow heating significantly contributes to the equilibrium state. Increasing its strength raises the equilibrium core temperature. We find that if deep crustal heating is replaced by shallow heating alone, the core would still heat up, reaching only a 2% lower equilibrium core temperature. Deep crustal heating may therefore not be vital to the heating of the core. Accretion at super-Eddington rates is expected to be accompanied by strong outflows. Such outflows are observed in Galactic X-ray binaries and extragalactic Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). However, due to their large source distances, ULX outflows are challenging to detect and study in detail. Galactic neutron stars accreting from a Be-star companion at super-Eddington rates show many similarities to ULX pulsars, and therefore offer an alternative approach to study outflows in this accretion regime. Here, we present Chandra high-resolution spectroscopy of such a super-Eddington accreting neutron star, Swift J0243.6+6124, to search for wind outflow signatures during the peak of its 2017/2018 giant outburst. We detect narrow emission features at rest from Ne, Mg, S, Si, and Fe. In addition, we detect a collection of absorption features which can be identified in two ways: either as all Fe transitions at rest (with a possible contribution from Mg), or a combination of three blue-shifted Ne and Mg lines at $\sim 0.22c$, while the remaining lines are at rest. The second scenario would imply an outflow with a velocity similar to those seen in ULXs, including the ULX pulsar NGC 300 ULX-1. This result would also imply that Swift J0243.6+6124 launches both a jet, detected in radio and reported previously, and an ultra-fast wind outflow simultaneously at super-Eddington accretion rates., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables. The main outburst of the candidate black hole low-mass X-ray binary (BH LMXB) MAXI J1535-571 ended in 2018 May and was followed by at least five episodes of re-brightenings. We have monitored this re-brightening phenomenon at X-ray and radio wavelengths using the {\it Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory} and Australia Telescope Compact Array, respectively. The first two re-brightenings exhibited a high peak X-ray luminosity (implying a high mass accretion rate) and were observed to transition from the hard to the soft state. However, unlike the main outburst, these re-brightenings did not exhibit clear hysteresis. During the re-brightenings, when MAXI J1535-571 was in the hard state, we observed the brightening of a compact radio jet which was subsequently quenched when the source transitioned to a similar soft state as was observed during the main outburst. We report on the first investigation of disk-jet coupling over multiple rapidly evolving re-brightenings in a BH LMXB. We find that the accretion flow properties and the accompanying compact jet evolve on a similarly rapid time scale of ~days rather than the typical value of ~weeks as observed for most other BH LMXBs during their main outburst events., Comment: accepted for publication by ApJ Letters

MAXI J1535-571 is a Galactic black hole candidate X-ray binary that was discovered going into outburst in 2017 September. In this paper, we present comprehensive radio monitoring of this system using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), as well as the MeerKAT radio observatory, showing the evolution of the radio jet during its outburst. Our radio observations show the early rise and subsequent quenching of the compact jet as the outburst brightened and then evolved towards the soft state. We constrain the compact jet quenching factor to be more than 3.5 orders of magnitude. We also detected and tracked (for 303 days) a discrete, relativistically-moving jet knot that was launched from the system. From the motion of the apparently superluminal knot, we constrain the jet inclination (at the time of ejection) and speed to $\leq 45^{\circ}$ and $\geq0.69$c, respectively. Extrapolating its motion back in time, our results suggest that the jet knot was ejected close in time to the transition from the hard intermediate state to soft intermediate state. The launching event also occurred contemporaneously with a short increase in X-ray count rate, a rapid drop in the strength of the X-ray variability, and a change in the type-C quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) frequency that occurs $>$2.5 days before the first appearance of a possible type-B QPO., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, supplementary tables and figures included as appendices. MAXI J1957+032 is a transient Low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) that underwent four short outbursts in 1.5 years since its discovery in 2015. The nature of the compact object in MAXI J1957+032 is not clear, but it was proposed to be a neutron star based on the short-duration of its outbursts. Here, we report the results obtained after performing spectral analysis using data obtained with the X-ray telescope aboard the Neil Gehrels Swift satellite. When describing the spectrum with an absorbed power law, we found that the spectra softens (the power-law index increases from $\sim$ 1.8 to 2.5) as the luminosity decreases. Near the end of its outbursts the observed value of power-law index ($\Gamma$) is $\sim$ 2.5. To identify the nature of the compact object in this system, we used $\Gamma$ as a tracer of the spectral evolution with luminosity. We found that for the distance of 4 kpc, our results suggest that the source harbours a neutron star., Comment: 10 pages, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on observations of black hole Swift J1357.2-0933, a member of the modest population of very faint X-ray transients. This source has previously shown intense dips in the optical lightcurve, a phenomena that has been linked to the existence of a "unique toroidal structure" in the inner region of the disc, seen at a high inclination. Our observations, carried out by the Neil Gehrels Swift and NuSTAR X-ray observatories, do not show the presence of intense dips in the optical light curves. We find that the X-ray light curves do not show any features that would straightforwardly support an edge-on configuration or high inclination configuration of the orbit. This is similar to what was seen in the X-ray observations of the source during its 2011 outburst. Moreover, the broadband spectra were well described with an absorbed power-law model without any signatures of the cut-off at energies above 10 keV, or any reflection from the disc or the putative torus. Thus, the X-ray data do not support the unique obscuring torus scenario proposed for J1357. We also performed a multi-wavelength study using the data of X-ray telescope and Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope aboard Swift, taken during the 4.5 months duration of the 2017 outburst. This is consistent with what was previously inferred for this source. We found a correlation between the simultaneous X-ray and ultraviolet/optical data and our study suggests that most of the reprocessed flux must be coming out in the ultraviolet., Comment: 13 pages, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Transient Be/X-ray binary systems, wherein a compact object accretes from a Be-companion star, can show giant and periastron outbursts. During the decay of their giant outbursts, some Be/X-ray binaries also show X-ray re-brightenings, the origin of which is not understood. Recently, we presented the discovery of a jet from a neutron star Be/X-ray binary, observed during the giant outburst of Swift J0243.6+6124. Here, we present continued radio monitoring of its 2017/2018 giant outburst decay and a re-brightening of this source. During the former, we observe a radio flare with a steep radio spectrum, possibly caused by interactions between discrete ejecta colliding with the pre-existing jet or the surrounding medium. During the X-ray re-brightening, we observe the radio jet turning on and off within days. Surprisingly, this re-establishing jet is as bright in radio as at the peak of the super-Eddington giant outburst, despite more than two orders of magnitude lower X-ray luminosity. In addition, the jet is only observed when the X-ray luminosity exceeds approximately $2\times 10^{36} (D/5\rm kpc)^2$ erg/s. We discuss how such an X-ray threshold for jet launching might be related to the presence of a magnetic centrifugal barrier at lower mass accretion rates. We also discuss the implications of our results for the launch of jets from strongly magnetized neutron stars, and explore future avenues to exploit the new possibility of coordinated X-ray/radio studies of neutron star Be/X-ray binaries., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. We present our Swift monitoring campaign of the slowly rotating neutron star Be/X-ray transient GX 304-1 (spin period of ~275 s) when the source was not in outburst. We found that between its type-I outbursts the source recurrently exhibits a slowly decaying low-luminosity state (with luminosities of 10^(34-35) erg/s). This behaviour is very similar to what has been observed for another slowly rotating system, GRO J1008-57. For that source, this low-luminosity state has been explained in terms of accretion from a non-ionised ('cold') accretion disk. Due to the many similarities between both systems, we suggest that GX 304-1 enters a similar accretion regime between its outbursts. The outburst activity of GX 304-1 ceased in 2016. Our continued monitoring campaign shows that the source is in a quasi-stable low-luminosity state (with luminosities a few factors lower than previously seen) for at least one year now. Using our NuSTAR observation in this state, we found pulsations at the spin period, demonstrating that the X-ray emission is due to accretion of matter onto the neutron star surface. If the accretion geometry during this quasi-stable state is the same as during the cold-disk state, then matter indeed reaches the surface (as predicted) during this latter state. IGR J17591$-$2342 is a 527-Hz accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar that was discovered in outburst in 2018 August. In this paper, we present quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray monitoring of this source during the early part of the outburst. IGR J17591$-$2342 is highly absorbed in X-rays, with an equivalent hydrogen absorption along the line of sight, $N_{\rm H}$, of $\approx$4.4$\times$10$^{22}$\,cm$^{-2}$, where the Galactic column density is expected to be $\approx$1 -- 2$\times$10$^{22}$\,cm$^{-2}$. The high absorption suggests that the source is either relatively distant ($>$6\,kpc), or the X-ray emission is strongly absorbed by material local to the system. Radio emission detected by the Australia Telescope Compact Array shows that, for a given X-ray luminosity and for distances greater than 3\,kpc, this source was exceptionally radio loud when compared to other accreting neutron stars in outburst ($L_{\rm X} > 10^{33}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$). For most reasonable distances, IGR J17591$-$2342 appeared as radio luminous as actively accreting, stellar-mass black hole X-ray binaries., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. Monitoring the cooling of neutron-star crusts heated during accretion outbursts allows us to infer the physics of the dense matter present in the crust. We examine the crust cooling evolution of the low-mass X-ray binary MXB 1659-29 up to ~505 days after the end of its 2015 outburst (hereafter outburst II) and compare it with what we observed after its previous 1999 outburst (hereafter outburst I) using data obtained from the Swift, XMM-Newton, and Chandra observatories. The observed effective surface temperature of the neutron star in MXB 1659-29 dropped from ~92 eV to ~56 eV from ~12 days to ~505 days after the end of outburst II. The most recently performed observation after outburst II suggests that the crust is close to returning to thermal equilibrium with the core. We model the crust heating and cooling for both its outbursts collectively to understand the effect of parameters that may change for every outburst (e.g., the average accretion rate, the length of outburst, the envelope composition of the neutron star at the end of the outburst) and those which can be assumed to remain the same during these two outbursts (e.g., the neutron star mass, its radius). Our modelling indicates that all parameters were consistent between the two outbursts with no need for any significant changes. In particular, the strength and the depth of the shallow heating mechanism at work (in the crust) were inferred to be the same during both outbursts, contrary to what has been found when modelling the cooling curves after multiple outburst of another source, MAXI J0556-332. This difference in source behaviour is not understood. We discuss our results in the context of our current understanding of cooling of accretion-heated neutron-star crusts, and in particular with respect to the unexplained shallow heating mechanism., Comment: Submitted to A&A. The Be/X-ray transient GRO J1750-27 exhibited a type-II (giant) outburst in 2015. After the source transited to quiescence, we triggered our multi-year Chandra monitoring programme to study its quiescent behaviour. The programme was designed to follow the cooling of a potentially heated neutron-star crust due to accretion of matter during the preceding outburst, similar to what we potentially have observed before in two other Be/X-ray transients, namely 4U 0115+63 and V 0332+53. However, unlike for these other two systems, we do not find any strong evidence that the neutron-star crust in GRO J1750-27 was indeed heated during the accretion phase. We detected the source at a rather low X-ray luminosity (~10^33 erg/s) during only three of our five observations. When the source was not detected it had very low-luminosity upper limits (<10^32 erg/s; depending on assumed spectral model). We interpret these detections and the variability observed as emission likely due to very low-level accretion onto the neutron star. We also discuss why the neutron-star crust in GRO J1750-27 might not have been heated while the ones in 4U 0115+63 and V 0332+53 possibly were., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. Relativistic jets are observed throughout the Universe, strongly impacting their surrounding environments on all physical scales, from Galactic binary systems to galaxies and galaxy clusters. An important avenue to understand the formation of these jets is by characterising the systems and circumstances from which they are launched. Whenever a black hole or neutron star accretes matter, it appears to inevitably result in the launching of a jet, the only exception being the most common type of accreting neutron stars: those with strong ($B \geq 10^{12}$ G) magnetic fields. This exception has created the paradigm that strong magnetic fields inhibit the formation of jets. Here, we report the discovery of a jet launched by a strongly-magnetised neutron star that is accreting above the Eddington limit, disproving this long-standing paradigm. The radio luminosity of the jet is two orders of magnitude fainter than seen in other neutron stars, implying an important role for the neutron star's properties in regulating jet power. This jet detection necessitates fundamental revision of current neutron star jet models and opens up new tests of jet theory for all accreting systems. It also shows that the strong magnetic fields of ultra-luminous X-ray pulsars do not prevent such sources from launching jets., Comment: Updated to the Author's Accepted Manuscript version. GRO J1744-28, commonly known as the `Bursting Pulsar', is a low mass X-ray binary containing a neutron star and an evolved giant star. This system, together with the Rapid Burster (MXB 1730-33), are the only two systems that display the so-called Type II X-ray bursts. These type of bursts, which last for 10s of seconds, are thought to be caused by viscous instabilities in the disk; however the Type II bursts seen in GRO J1744-28 are qualitatively very different from those seen in the archetypal Type II bursting source the Rapid Burster. To understand these differences and to create a framework for future study, we perform a study of all X-ray observations of all 3 known outbursts of the Bursting Pulsar which contained Type II bursts, including a population study of all Type II X-ray bursts seen by RXTE. We find that the bursts from this source are best described in four distinct phenomena or `classes' and that the characteristics of the bursts evolve in a predictable way. Observations of the spin distribution of rapidly rotating neutron stars show evidence for a lack of stars spinning at frequencies larger than $f\approx 700$ Hz, well below the predictions of theoretical equations of state. This has generally been taken as evidence of an additional spin-down torque operating in these systems and it has been suggested that gravitational wave torques may be operating and be linked to a potentially observable signal. In this paper we aim to determine whether additional spin-down torques are necessary, or whether the observed limit of $f\approx 700$ Hz could correspond to the mass-shedding frequency for the observed systems and is simply a consequence of the, currently unknown, state of matter at high densities. Given our ignorance with regard to the true equation of state of matter above nuclear saturation densities, we make minimal physical assumption and only demand causality in the core. We then connect our causally-limited equation of state to a realistic microphysical crustal equation of state for densities below nuclear saturation density. This produces a limiting model that will give the lowest possible maximum frequency, which we compare to observational constraints on neutron star masses and frequencies. We also compare our findings with the constraints on the tidal deformability obtained in the observations of the GW170817 event. We find that the lack of pulsars spinning faster than $f\approx 700$ Hz is not compatible with our causal limited `minimal' equation of state, for which the breakup frequency cannot be lower than $f_{\rm max}\approx 1200$ Hz. A low frequency cutoff, around $f\approx 800$ Hz could only be possible if we assume that these systems do not contain neutron stars with masses above $M\approx 2 M_\odot$. This would have to be due either to selection effects, or possibly to a phase transition in the interior of the neutron star., Comment: Submitted to A&A

We present a new Chandra observation (performed in July 2016) of the neutron star X-ray transient IGR J17480-2446, located in the globular cluster Terzan 5. We study the continued cooling of the neutron star crust in this system that was heated during the 2010 outburst of the source. This new observation was performed two years after the last observation of IGR J17480-2446, hence, significantly extending the cooling baseline. We reanalysed all available Chandra observations of the source (but excluding observations during which one of the known transients in Terzan 5 was in outburst) and fitted the obtained cooling curve with our cooling code NSCool, which allows for much improved modelling than what was previously performed for the source. The data and our fit models indicate that the crust was still cooling ~5.5 years after the outburst ended. The neutron star crust has likely not reached crust-core thermal equilibrium yet, and further cooling is predicted (which can be confirmed with additional Chandra observations in >5 years). Intriguingly, we find indications that the thermal conductivity might be relatively low in part of the crust compared to what has been inferred for other crust-cooling sources and tentatively suggest that this layer might be located around the neutron drip. The reason for this difference is unclear, but might be related to the fact that IGR J17480-2446 harbours a relatively slowly rotating neutron star (with a spin of 11 Hz) that has a relatively strong inferred surface magnetic field ($10^{9-10}$ Gauss) compared to what is known or typically assumed for other cooling sources., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

MASTER OT 075353.88+174907.6 was a blue optical transient reported by the MASTER-Net project on 2017 Oct 31. This source was previously detected by {\it GALEX} in its NUV band but not by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (in the optical). We carried out multiwavelength follow-up observations of this source during its 2017 outburst using {\it Swift} and RATIR. The source was found to be $\gtrsim$4.4 mag above its quiescent level during the peak of the outburst and the outburst lasted $\gtrsim$19 days. Our observations suggest that it was a superoutburst of a long orbital period U Geminorum type dwarf nova system. The spectral energy distribution during the initial slow decay phase of the outburst was consistent with a disk-dominated spectra (having spectral indices $\Gamma \! \sim$1.5--2.3). After this phase, the UV flux decreased slower than the optical and the spectral energy distribution was very steep with indices $\Gamma \! \sim$3.7$\pm$0.7. This slow decay in the UV may be the emission from a cooling white dwarf heated during the outburst. The spectral shape determined from the assumed pre-outburst quiescent level was also steep ($\Gamma \! \gtrsim$2.5) indicating that the white dwarf is still hot in quiescence (even after the cooling due to the potential accretion-induced heating has halted). No X-ray emission was detected from the source since it is likely located at a large distance $>$2.3 kpc., Comment: accepted by RMxAA, to appear in Volume 55

We report on two new quiescent {\it XMM-Newton} observations (in addition to the earlier {\it Swift}/XRT and {\it XMM-Newton} coverage) of the cooling neutron star crust in the low-mass X-ray binary 1RXS J180408.9$-$342058. Its crust was heated during the $\sim$4.5 month accretion outburst of the source. From our quiescent observations, fitting the spectra with a neutron star atmosphere model, we found that the crust had cooled from $\sim$ 100 eV to $\sim$73 eV from $\sim$8 days to $\sim$479 days after the end of its outburst. However, during the most recent observation, taken $\sim$860 days after the end of the outburst, we found that the crust appeared not to have cooled further. This suggested that the crust had returned to thermal equilibrium with the neutron star core. We model the quiescent thermal evolution with the theoretical crustal cooling code NSCool and find that the source requires a shallow heat source, in addition to the standard deep crustal heating processes, contributing $\sim$0.9 MeV per accreted nucleon during outburst to explain its observed temperature decay. Our high quality {\it XMM-Newton} data required an additional hard component to adequately fit the spectra. This slightly complicates our interpretation of the quiescent data of 1RXS J180408.9$-$342058. The origin of this component is not fully understood., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS

We present LOFAR high-band data over the frequency range 115-189 MHz for the X-ray binary SS 433, obtained in an observing campaign from 2013 February - 2014 May. Our results include a deep, wide-field map, allowing a detailed view of the surrounding supernova remnant W 50 at low radio frequencies, as well as a light curve for SS 433 determined from shorter monitoring runs. The complex morphology of W 50 is in excellent agreement with previously published higher-frequency maps; we find additional evidence for a spectral turnover in the eastern wing, potentially due to foreground free-free absorption. Furthermore, SS 433 is tentatively variable at 150 MHz, with both a debiased modulation index of 11 per cent and a $\chi^2$ probability of a flat light curve of $8.2 \times 10^{-3}$. By comparing the LOFAR flux densities with contemporaneous observations carried out at 4800 MHz with the RATAN-600 telescope, we suggest that an observed $\sim$0.5-1 Jy rise in the 150-MHz flux density may correspond to sustained flaring activity over a period of approximately six months at 4800 MHz. However, the increase is too large to be explained with a standard synchrotron bubble model. We also detect a wealth of structure along the nearby Galactic plane, including the most complete detection to date of the radio shell of the candidate supernova remnant G 38.7-1.4. We present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array radio frequency observations of the new accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP), IGR J16597$-$3704, located in the globular cluster NGC 6256. With these data, we detect a radio counterpart to IGR J16597$-$3704, and determine an improved source position. Pairing our radio observations with quasi-simultaneous Swift/XRT X-ray observations, we place IGR J16597$-$3704 on the radio -- X-ray luminosity plane, where we find that IGR J16597$-$3704 is one of the more radio-quiet neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries known to date. We discuss the mechanisms that may govern radio luminosity (and in turn jet production and evolution) in AMXPs. Further, we use our derived radio position to search for a counterpart in archival Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory data, and estimate an upper limit on the X-ray luminosity of IGR J16597$-$3704 during quiescence., Comment: 12 pages, 4 Figures, Accepted to ApJ

IGR J17062-6143 is an ultra-compact X-ray binary (UCXB) with an orbital period of 37.96 min. It harbours a millisecond X-ray pulsar that is spinning at 163 Hz and and has continuously been accreting from its companion star since 2006. Determining the composition of the accreted matter in UCXBs is of high interest for studies of binary evolution and thermonuclear burning on the surface of neutron stars. Here, we present a multi-wavelength study of IGR J17062-6143 aimed to determine the detailed properties of its accretion disc and companion star. The multi-epoch photometric UV to near-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) is consistent with an accretion disc $F_{\nu}\propto\nu^{1/3}$. The SED modelling of the accretion disc allowed us to estimate an outer disc radius of $R_{out}=2.2^{+0.9}_{-0.4} \times 10^{10}$ cm and a mass-transfer rate of $\dot{m}=1.8^{+1.8}_{-0.5}\times10^{-10}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. Comparing this with the estimated mass-accretion rate inferred from its X-ray emission suggests that $\gtrsim$90% of the transferred mass is lost from the system. Moreover, our SED modelling shows that the thermal emission component seen in the X-ray spectrum is highly unlikely from the accretion disc and must therefore represent emission from the surface of the neutron star. Our low-resolution optical spectrum revealed a blue continuum and no emission lines, i.e. lacking H and He features. Based on the current data we cannot conclusively identify the nature of the companion star, but we make recommendations for future study that can distinguish between the different possible evolution histories of this X-ray binary. We present a comprehensive X-ray study of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary IGR J17062-6143, which has been accreting at low luminosities since its discovery in $2006$. Analysing NuSTAR, XMM-Newton and Swift observations, we investigate the very faint nature of this source through three approaches: modelling the relativistic reflection spectrum to constrain the accretion geometry, performing high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy to search for an outflow, and searching for the recently reported millisecond X-ray pulsations. We find a strongly truncated accretion disk at $77^{+22}_{-18}$ gravitational radii ($\sim 164$ km) assuming a high inclination, although a low inclination and a disk extending to the neutron star cannot be excluded. The high-resolution spectroscopy reveals evidence for oxygen-rich circumbinary material, possibly resulting from a blueshifted, collisionally-ionised outflow. Finally, we do not detect any pulsations. We discuss these results in the broader context of possible explanations for the persistent faint nature of weakly accreting neutron stars. The results are consistent with both an ultra-compact binary orbit and a magnetically truncated accretion flow, although both cannot be unambigiously inferred. In accreting neutron star X-ray transients, the neutron star crust can be substantially heated out of thermal equilibrium with the core during an accretion outburst. The observed subsequent cooling in quiescence (when accretion has halted) offers a unique opportunity to study the structure and thermal properties of the crust. Initially crust cooling modelling studies focussed on transient X-ray binaries with prolonged accretion outbursts (> 1 year) such that the crust would be significantly heated for the cooling to be detectable. Here we present the results of applying a theoretical model to the observed cooling curve after a short accretion outburst of only ~10 weeks. In our study we use the 2010 outburst of the transiently accreting 11 Hz X-ray pulsar in the globular cluster Terzan 5. Observationally it was found that the crust in this source was still hot more than 4 years after the end of its short accretion outburst. From our modelling we found that such a long-lived hot crust implies some unusual crustal properties such as a very low thermal conductivity (> 10 times lower than determined for the other crust cooling sources). In addition, we present our preliminary results of the modelling of the ongoing cooling of the neutron star in MXB 1659-298. This transient X-ray source went back into quiescence in March 2017 after an accretion phase of ~1.8 years. EXO 1745-248 is a transient neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary that resides in the globular cluster Terzan 5. We studied the transient during its quiescent state using 18 Chandra observations of the cluster acquired between 2003 and 2016. We found an extremely variable source, with a luminosity variation in the 0.5-10 keV energy range of $\sim3$ orders of magnitude (between $3\times10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $2\times10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$) on timescales from years down to only a few days. Using an absorbed power-law model to fit its quiescent spectra, we obtained a typical photon index of $\sim1.4$, indicating that the source is even harder than during outburst and much harder than typical quiescent neutron stars if their quiescent X-ray spectra are also described by a single power-law model. This indicates that EXO 1745-248 is very hard throughout the entire observed X-ray luminosity range. At the highest luminosity, the spectrum fits better when an additional (soft) component is added to the model. All these quiescent properties are likely related to strong variability in the low-level accretion rate in the system. However, its extreme variable behavior is strikingly different from the one observed for other neutron star transients that are thought to still accrete in quiescence. We compare our results to these systems. We also discuss similarities and differences between our target and the transitional millisecond pulsar IGR J18245-2452, which also has hard spectra and strong variability during quiescence., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of X-ray pulsations at 105.2 Hz (9.5 ms) from the transient X-ray binary IGR J16597-3704 using NuSTAR and Swift. The source was discovered by INTEGRAL in the globular cluster NGC 6256 at a distance of 9.1 kpc. The X-ray pulsations show a clear Doppler modulation implying an orbital period of ~46 minutes and a projected semi-major axis of ~5 lt-ms, which makes IGR J16597-3704 an ultra-compact X-ray binary system. We estimated a minimum companion mass of 0.0065 solar masses, assuming a neutron star mass of 1.4 solar masses, and an inclination angle of <75 degrees (suggested by the absence of eclipses or dips in its light-curve). The broad-band energy spectrum of the source is well described by a disk blackbody component (kT ~1.4 keV) plus a comptonised power-law with photon index ~2.3 and an electron temperature of ~30 keV. Her X-1 is an accreting neutron star in an intermediate-mass X-ray binary. Like low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), it accretes via Roche-lobe overflow, but similar to many high-mass X-ray binaries containing a neutron star, Her X-1 has a strong magnetic field and slow spin. Here, we present the discovery of radio emission from Her X-1 with the Very Large Array. During the radio observation, the central X-ray source was partially obscured by a warped disk. We measure a radio flux density of $38.7 \pm 4.8$ $\mu$Jy at $9$ GHz but can not constrain the spectral shape. We discuss possible origins of the radio emission, and conclude that coherent emission, a stellar wind, shocks and a propeller outflow are all unlikely explanations. A jet, as seen in LMXBs, is consistent with the observed radio properties. We consider the implications of the presence of a jet in Her X-1 on jet formation mechanisms and on the launcing of jets by neutron stars with strong magnetic fields., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We report the discovery of radio emission from the accreting X-ray pulsar and symbiotic X-ray binary GX 1+4 with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. This is the first radio detection of such a system, wherein a strongly magnetized neutron star accretes from the stellar wind of an M-type giant companion. We measure a $9$ GHz radio flux density of $105.3 \pm 7.3$ $\mu$Jy, but cannot place meaningful constraints on the spectral index due to a limited frequency range. We consider several emission mechanisms that could be responsible for the observed radio source. We conclude that the observed properties are consistent with shocks in the interaction of the accretion flow with the magnetosphere, a synchrotron-emitting jet, or a propeller-driven outflow. The stellar wind from the companion is unlikely to be the origin of the radio emission. If the detected radio emission originates from a jet, it would show that that strong magnetic fields ($\geq 10^{12}$ G) do not necessarily suppress jet formation., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure; accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters
