- Abstract
The burden placed by human activities on Earth is ever-increasing. Global environmental changes have profoundly affected the Earth's core systems and processes, thus, risking their stability. These core systems and processes are described in the planetary boundary framework. The drastic rate of environmental change over the last 200 years, which is also known as the Great Acceleration, has been depicted graphically by the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program. This study is aimed to: (1) examine the conceptions of students and scientists regarding socioeconomic growth within planetary boundaries; and (2) develop instructional guidelines based on the comparison of their conceptions. Accordingly, relevant conceptions of 22 junior and 20 senior secondary school students were analyzed. Scientists' conceptions were extracted by thoroughly analyzing nine publications, which were selected by systematic literature search. Student statements and scientific inferences were coded following established protocols. Our results indicated that junior and senior secondary school students considered global population growth to be the primary cause of global environmental changes. On the contrary, the scientists considered the quantity of natural resources consumed by rich countries in their economic pursuits as the most critical factor in environmental degradation. Based on our findings, we proposed instructional guidelines for planning lessons on changing current socioeconomic systems to enable humans to live within planetary boundaries.

- Abstract
- Abstract
Aims: We introduce ReSurveyEurope — a new data source of resurveyed vegetation plots in Europe, compiled by a collaborative network of vegetation scientists. We describe the scope of this initiative, provide an overview of currently available data, governance, data contribution rules, and accessibility. In addition, we outline further steps, including potential research questions. Results: ReSurveyEurope includes resurveyed vegetation plots from all habitats. Version 1.0 of ReSurveyEurope contains 283,135 observations (i.e., individual surveys of each plot) from 79,190 plots sampled in 449 independent resurvey projects. Of these, 62,139 (78%) are permanent plots, that is, marked in situ, or located with GPS, which allow for high spatial accuracy in resurvey. The remaining 17,051 (22%) plots are from studies in which plots from the initial survey could not be exactly relocated. Four data sets, which together account for 28,470 (36%) plots, provide only presence/absence information on plant species, while the remaining 50,720 (64%) plots contain abundance information (e.g., percentage cover or cover–abundance classes such as variants of the Braun-Blanquet scale). The oldest plots were sampled in 1911 in the Swiss Alps, while most plots were sampled between 1950 and 2020. Conclusions: ReSurveyEurope is a new resource to address a wide range of research questions on fine-scale changes in European vegetation. The initiative is devoted to an inclusive and transparent governance and data usage approach, based on slightly adapted rules of the well-established European Vegetation Archive (EVA). ReSurveyEurope data are ready for use, and proposals for analyses of the data set can be submitted at any time to the coordinators. Still, further data contributions are highly welcome.

- Abstract

We aimed to investigate whether a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) prior to TAVI reduces the odds of POD and results in a positive change in self-care ability, intended to lay a foundation for future geriatric comanagement.Patients and methods: We used a retrospective, single-center study with a quasi-experimental design enrolling patients aged 70 years and older undergoing CGA before elective TAVI, and a nonrandomized comparison group without preoperative CGA. Data on POD occurrence during the first 5 days after TAVI (primary outcome) and change in self-care ability index (SPI) between admission and discharge (secondary outcome) were collected from electronic health records and CGA data (exposure) by clinical assessment. To explore associations between (1) CGA and POD, and (2) CGA and SPI, multivariate logistic regression and linear r

- Abstract
Homograft heart valves may have significant advantages and are preferred for the repair of congenital valve malformations, especially in young women of childbearing age, athletes and in patients with active endocarditis. A growing problem, however, is the mismatch between tissue donation and the increasing demand. The aim of this paper is to describe the initiation process of a homograft procurement program to attenuate the shortage of organs. A comprehensive description of the infrastructure and procedural steps required to initiate a cardiac and vascular tissue donation program combined with a prospective follow-up of all homografts explanted at our institution. Between January 2020 and May 2022, 28 hearts and 12 pulmonary bifurcations were harvested at our institution and delivered to the European homograft bank. Twenty-seven valves (19 pulmonary valves, 8 aortic valves) were processed and allocated for implantation. The reasons for discarding a graft were either contamination (n = 14), or morphology (n = 13) or leaflet damage (n = 2). Five homografts (3 PV, 2 AV) have been cryopreserved and stored while awaiting allocation. One pulmonary homograft with a leaflet cut was retrieved by bicuspidization technique and awaits allocation, as a highly requested small diameter graft. The implementation of a tissue donation program in cooperation with a homograft bank can be achieved with reasonable additional efforts at a transplant center with an in-house cardiac surgery department. Challenging situations with a potential risk of tissue injury during procurement include re-operation, harvesting by a non-specialist surgeon and prior central cannulation for mechanical circulatory support.

- Abstract
The global lack of donor shortage poses a major limitation for heart transplantation. New concepts with expanded donor inclusion criteria comprise extended transport distances and prolonged ischemic times with the aim of reaching a larger number of potential donors. Recent developments in cold storage solutions may allow more donor hearts with prolonged ischemic times to be use for transplantation in the future. We present our experience during a long-distance donor heart procurement with the longest reported transport distance and transport time in the current literature. This was made possible through the use of SherpaPak™, an innovative cold storage system which allows for controlled temperatures during transportation.

The body tracking systems on the current market offer a wide range of options for tracking the movements of objects, people, or extremities. The precision of this technology is often limited and determines its field of application. This work aimed to identify relevant technical and environmental factors that influence the performance of body tracking in industrial environments. The influence of light intensity, range of motion, speed of movement and direction of hand movement was analyzed individually and in combination. The hand movement of a test person was recorded with an Azure Kinect at a distance of 1.3 m. The joints in the center of the hand showed the highest accuracy compared to other joints. The best results were achieved at a luminous intensity of 500 lx, and movements in the x-axis direction were more precise than in the other directions. The greatest inaccuracy was found in the z-axis direction. A larger range of motion resulted in higher inaccuracy, with the lowest data scatter at a 100 mm range of motion. No significant difference was found at hand velocity of 370 mm/s, 670 mm/s and 1140 mm/s. This study emphasizes the potential of RGB-D camera technology for gesture control of industrial robots in industrial environments to increase efficiency and ease of use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerous studies have shown that a considerable number of students do not accept the theory of evolution, prompting the scientific community to seek ways to improve how lessons on evolution are designed in order to promote students' acceptance. A crucial factor identified in many studies is students' comprehension of the nature of science and their perceived conflict between religious beliefs and evolution. Our research aimed to investigate the effects of philosophical dialogues on evolution acceptance, with a specific focus on the relationship between religion and science. We conducted an intervention study in 21 high-school classes in Switzerland. Our findings suggest that high-quality philosophical dialogues can enhance students' acceptance of evolution by addressing the perceived conflict between it and religious beliefs. Conversely, low-quality dialogues may intensify the influence of religiosity, negatively affecting evolution acceptance. Our study underscores both the importance of applying philosophical methods skilfully and the potential benefits of incorporating philosophical dialogues into teaching practices. It also highlights the value of fostering a nuanced understanding of the interplay between religion and science in the context of evolution education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GEOMETRICAL optics ,PHYSICAL optics ,ELECTROMAGNETIC spectrum ,VISIBLE spectra ,MIDDLE school students - Abstract
The field of geometrical optics features a broad knowledge base concerning conceptual learning difficulties and student conceptions. However, in contrast to other areas of physics, no widely used standard test instrument exists to assess middle school students' conceptual knowledge of geometrical optics. This is even more true for other areas of the electromagnetic spectrum. For this reason, a concept test was developed for an intervention study to collect preconceptions about visible light as well as preconceptions about infrared radiation in the subject area of reflection and transmission. A pilot study with 108 middle school students preceded final revisions and implementation in the main study of 820 learners aged 12–16. The measurement model is presented for the developed concept test with the subscales 'preconceptions and knowledge about reflection and transmission in visible optics', 'preconceptions and knowledge about reflection and transmission in infrared optics' and 'applied knowledge on reflection and transmission in visible and infrared optics'. The results show that the concept test validly captures the development of preconceptions and knowledge regarding specific aspects of reflection and transmission of the part of the electromagnetic spectrum from 3 µm to 380 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of environmental protection, the construction industry plays a key role with significant CO
2 emissions from mineral-based construction materials. Recycling these materials is crucial, but the presence of hazardous substances, i.e., in older building materials, complicates this effort. To be able to legally introduce substances into a circular economy, reliable predictions within minimal possible time are necessary. This work introduces a machine learning approach for detecting trace quantities (≥0.06 wt%) of minerals, exemplified by siderite in calcium carbonate mixtures. The model, trained on 1680 X-ray powder diffraction datasets, provides dependable and fast predictions, eliminating the need for specialized expertise. While limitations exist in transferability to other mineral traces, the approach offers automation without expertise and a potential for real-world applications with minimal prediction time. ECTOMYCORRHIZAL fungi ,FUNGAL morphology ,SOLAR radiation ,CARBOHYDRATES ,DROUGHTS ,TREES - Abstract
Background: Weather conditions and fungal morphology may influence spatial and temporal dynamics of carbon transfer to ectomycorrhizal fungi from their tree hosts but field studies of these dynamics are challenging. Methods: Broad-leaved trees in a Swiss forest were labeled with
13 C-depleted CO2 from 2001–2005 and13 C traced into ectomycorrhizal sporocarps collected at different distances from those trees. We then correlated distance (zone), year, fungal genus, fungal morphology, and solar radiation against sporocarp δ13 C and loge C/N in stepwise regressions. Results: CO2 -supplied trees contributed 71 ± 5%, 32 ± 6%, and 19 ± 7% of sporocarp carbon at 0–6, 6–12, and 12–18 m from these trees, respectively. Fungal morphology (rhizomorph presence and ectomycorrhizae hydrophobicity) was uncorrelated with fungal carbon acquisition. After drought in 2003, CO2 -supplied trees contributed less carbon in 2004 than in other years to sporocarps and sporocarp loge C/N decreased. In contrast, sporocarp loge C/N peaked in 2005 and contributions from CO2 -labeled trees to the 6–12 and 12–18 m zones increased. Solar radiation with a 14–21 day lag correlated negatively with loge C/N. Sporocarp loge C/N correlated positively with δ13 C at 0–6 m and negatively elsewhere. Conclusions: These patterns indicated: 1) fungal morphology did not affect carbon transfers, 2) carbohydrates rather than amino acids were transferred across zones to sporocarps (inferred from spatial correlations of loge C/N and δ13 C), 3) sporocarp δ13 C and loge C/N reflected the last 2–3 weeks of photosynthesis; 4) summer drought and plant allocation influenced the quantity and spatial extent of belowground transfer.
