Stacking orders and topological defects substantially influence the physical properties of 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials. However, the inherent features of 2D materials challenge the effectiveness of single characterization techniques in identifying stacking sequences, necessitating correlative approaches. Using bilayer MoS2 as a benchmark, we differentiate its polytypism and specific dislocations through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. Perfect and partial dislocations were revealed in TEM, which are closely linked to the stacking sequences, thus indirectly indicating the 2H and 3R polytypes. 3D electron diffraction reconstruction on relrods and low-frequency Raman spectroscopy further validated these polytypes owing to their reliance on crystal symmetry. Surprisingly, we unexpectedly resolved both polytypes despite starting with 2H bulk crystal, pointing to a possible phase transition during mechanical exfoliation. Electron tomography (ET) offers nanoscale 3D characterization of mesoporous materials but is often limited by their low scattering contrast. Here, we introduce a gallium (Ga) intrusion strategy for mesoporous silica that dramatically improves imaging contrast - a key benefit that enables more accurate 3D reconstructions. By infiltrating Ga through a modified mercury intrusion porosimetry process, the high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) STEM signal is enhanced by 5 times, resulting in a 34% improvement in reconstruction resolution and a 49% enhancement in interface sharpness. In addition, the increased sample conductivity facilitates focused ion beam (FIB) milling by minimizing charging effects and reducing drift. This approach enables precise segmentation and quantitative analysis of pore connectivity and size distribution, thereby extending the applicability of ET to light-element non-conductive materials and advancing structure-property characterization of complex porous systems.

We demonstrate elastically filtered 3D Electron Diffraction (3D ED) as a powerful alternative technique to Grazing Incidence Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (GIWAXS) for quantitatively characterizing the structure of organic semiconductor films. Using a model material system of solvent vapor annealed DRCN5T:PC71BM thin film, which is employed in organic solar cells (OSCs), we extract the structural data obtained from 3D ED and compare with that from GIWAXS, utilizing both laboratory and synchrotron X-ray sources. Quantitative evaluation of the datasets in terms of peak positions, peak widths and mosaicity revealed good agreement between both techniques, qualifying 3D ED as an alternative tool for analyzing highly beam-sensitive organic thin films. Furthermore, the respective advantages and limitations of 3D ED and GIWAXS are discussed, emphasizing the unique capability of 3D ED to integrate seamlessly with the diverse imaging and spectroscopic modalities in modern TEM. Antimony sulfide (Sb$_2$S$_3$), a compound of earth-abundant elements with highly anisotropic, quasi-layered crystal structure, triggered growing interest as a solar absorber in photovoltaics and as a phase change material in memory devices, yet challenges remain in achieving high-quality thin films with controlled nucleation and growth for optimal performance. Here, we investigate the phase transformation, crystal structure and properties, growth and degradation of atomic layer deposited Sb$_2$S$_3$ thin films using in situ TEM and correlative ex situ analysis. The as-deposited amorphous films crystallized at 243{\deg}C, forming grains with an [100] out-of-plane texture and developed into tens to hundreds of micrometer, leaves-shaped grains. Introducing an ultra-thin ZnS interfacial layer increased nucleation density, and resulted in a few micrometer-sized, more uniform grains while retaining the overall [100] texture. In situ observations and subsequent crystal orientation analysis with cutting-edge 4D-STEM and EBSD revealed that the grains grew faster along the [010] ribbon direction and that the bare films underwent early-stage degradation, forming holes in amorphous regions during annealing. The ZnS interlayer mitigated degradation, stabilizing the films and improving their uniformity. Although the progresses in numerical methods and high performance computing, in such cases, it is not possible to explore various model configurations, hence efficient surrogate models are required. Generally the available meta-model techniques show several advantages and disadvantages depending on the investigated problem. In this paper we present an automatic approach for the selection of the optimal suitable meta-model for the actual problem. This filter techniques enable a reduction of the high dimensional variable space to a much smaller subspace where meta-model-based sensitivity analyses are carried out to assess the influence of important variables and to identify the optimal subspace with corresponding surrogate model which enables the most accurate probabilistic analysis. Interest in organic solar cells (OSCs) is constantly rising in the field of photovoltaic devices. The device performance relies on the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) nanomorphology, which develops during the drying process and additional post-treatment. This work studies the effect of thermal annealing (TA) on an all-small molecule DRCN5T: PC71 BM blend with phase field simulations. The objective is to determine the physical phenomena driving the evolution of the BHJ morphology for a better understanding of the posttreatment/morphology relationship. Phase-field simulation results are used to investigate the impact on the final BHJ morphology of the DRCN5T crystallization-related mechanisms, including nucleation, growth, crystal stability, impingement, grain coarsening, and Ostwald ripening, of the amorphous-amorphous phase separation (AAPS), and of diffusion limitations. The comparison of simulation results with experimental data shows that the morphological evolution of the BHJ under TA is dominated by dissolution of the smallest, unstable DRCN5T crystals and anisotropic growth of the largest crystals., Comment: 41 pages incl. We theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate the use of motional sidebands in a trapped ensemble of $^{87}$Rb atoms to engineer tunable long-range XXZ spin models. We benchmark our simulator by probing a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic dynamical phase transition in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model, a collective XXZ model plus additional transverse and longitudinal fields, via Rabi spectroscopy. We experimentally reconstruct the boundary between the dynamical phases, which is in good agreement with mean-field theoretical predictions.
