In 1933 nine scholars from the University of Toronto and its affiliated colleges met to establish the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies (CSBS), which thus became the oldest academic society in Canada. This article examines the CSBS’s early history with a special focus on its purpose and intellectual stance. From there it moves to chart an impression of the Society’s current achievements, activities and intellectual character. This leads to a brief assessment of the challenges that face the CSBS in the future.

This collection of essays constitutes an extended argument for an anthropocentric, human-focused study of religious practices. Part I presents the basic premise of the argument, which is that there is nothing special or extraordinary about human behaviors and constructs that are claimed to have uniquely religious status and authority. Instead, they are fundamentally human, and so the scholar of religion is engaged in nothing more or less than studying humans across time and place in all their complex existence—which includes creating more-than-human beings and realities. As an extended and detailed example of such an approach, Part II addresses practices, rhetoric, and other data in early Christianities within Greco-Roman cultures and religions. The underlying aim is to insert studies of the New Testament and non-canonical texts, most often presented as “biblical studies,” into the anthropocentric study of religion proposed in Part I. How might we approach the study of “sacred texts” if they are nothing more or less than human documents deriving from situations that were themselves all too human? Braun’s Jesus and Addiction to Origins addresses that question with clarity and insight.

OpenModelica is a unique large-scale integrated open-source Modelica- and FMI-based modeling, simulation, optimization, model-based analysis and development environment. Moreover, the OpenModelica environment provides a number of facilities such as debugging; optimization; visualization and 3D animation; web-based model editing and simulation; scripting from Modelica, Python, Julia, and Matlab; efficient simulation and co-simulation of FMI-based models; compilation for embedded systems; Modelica-UML integration; requirement verification; and generation of parallel code for multi-core architectures. The environment is based on the equation-based object-oriented Modelica language and currently uses the MetaModelica extended version of Modelica for its model compiler implementation. This overview paper gives an up-to-date description of the capabilities of the system, short overviews of used open source symbolic and numeric algorithms with pointers to published literature, tool integration aspects, some lessons learned, and the main vision behind its development. Parameter sensitivity analysis is a core activity to assess the robustness of dynamical models with regard to unreliable parameters. This becomes critical for nonlinear models with many parameters subject to large uncertainties. In such contexts too often numerical experimentation is required due to the lack of analytic expressions for the derivatives of state variables with respect to parameters. A naive sweeping of the full parameter space is usually not an option due to combinatorial explosion. In this work we present OMSens, an open platform to assess the sensitivity of Modelica models tailored to work with OpenModelica. OMSens uses different methods to sensitivity analysis including an approach based on derivate-free non-linear optimization. This is a new approach not previously used in Modelica tools which provides important advantages such as robustness and applicability to models for which the derivatives of state variables don't exist or are not available. We tested OMSens with a Modelica version of World3, a large nonlinear socio-economic model. OMSens was effective to pinpoint a nonintuitive subset of parameters that, when perturbed within small ranges, yield strong changes on key state variables.

In this paper the authors trace very briefly the most consequential points of the history of Religious Studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This history demonstrates that the structural location and the disciplinary horizon of Religious Studies are central factors in whether Religious Studies is a marginal, threatened endeavor or whether it has a central, thriving place within the family of social sciences in a larger, research-oriented university. The main advantages and disadvantages of a cross-departmental and multi-disciplinary Program in the Study of Religion are presented in the last part of the paper.

This paper presents an argument that the oft-supposed centrality and stability of "the family" in Greco-Roman antiquity belongs as much to the realm of ancient and modem desire and mythmaking as to historical reality. The centrality of the family as the keystone of Greco-Roman societies, and the stability of this keystone will be questioned in light of the anti-familial margins, metonymically represented by the figure of the eunuch-priest and the vestal virgin, both spectacular investments in celibacy. Both figures, the argument goes, are simultaneously symptoms and signs of empire: the vestal virgin a totemic emblem of the fantasy for an inviolable, eternal Rome, but also its sacrificial scapegoat that reasserted Rome and Romanitas by expiating its failures; the eunuch a creaking announcement of Empire's more fundamental fissures, an exposure of the hegemony of Empire as a contestable ideology of stability that could not hold up against a disquieting sense of its frailty that was as frail as its people's gender vestures and "family values" that Greeks and Romans often lethargically regarded as natural, fixed, stable.

Modelica describes physical systems on a high level, using model objects, multi-dimensional arrays and other data structures as well as graphical representations. Modelica models are translated to differential-algebraic equation systems and compiled to executable code prior to their execution in numerical solvers. The translation gives a lot of possibilities for code optimization. This is particularly important for model-based control applications. This paper investigates the exploitation of C++ for Modelica code optimization. C++ supports advanced programming concepts and at the same time aims to “leave no room for a lower-level language … (except for assembly code in rare cases)” (B. Stroustrup: The C++ Programming Language, 2014). The features exploited here include polymorphism, templates, built-in exception handling and object destructors. The ideas have been implemented in the OpenModelica C++ runtime. The paper describes its enhancement with new array features and with an FMI 2.0 interface. FMI serves as interface between modeling tools and control applications. In particular the new FMI 2.0 meets requirements of numerical optimization solvers in modelbased control. A publically available application example demonstrates the achievements. CPU times obtained with the OpenModelica C++ runtime are significantly faster than CPU times obtained with the C runtime or with Dymola.

A common situation in industry is that a system model (here a composite model) is composed of several sub-models which may have been developed using different tools. FMI is one important technology for exporting/importing models between tools and/or connecting them via co-simulation. TLM based modeling and co-simulation is another important technique for modeling, connecting, and simulation of especially mechanical systems, which is simple, numerically stable, and efficient. A number of tool-specific simulation models, such as Modelica models, SimuLink models, Adams models, BEAST models, etc., have successfully been connected and simulated using TLM based co-simulation. However, previously there was no general open source tool for creation, graphic editing, and simulation of composite models connected via FMI or TLM based co-simulation. In this paper we present a graphical composite model editor based on OpenModelica which is integrated with the OpenModelica and the SKF TLM co-simulation frameworks to support both FMI and TLM based composite model editing and simulation. The editor supports creating, viewing and editing a composite model both in textual and graphical representation. The system supports simulation of composite models consisting of sub-models created using different tools.

Exaggerating in the direction of truth so as to provoke historiographical thought, this article claims that formative Christianity was wholly an androcentric project. Oft-cited women-friendly texts (Luke, Galatians, Gospel of Thomas) are not exceptions to early Christian masculinised gender ideology. The article locates early Christian commitment to a piety of 'andreia' (manliness) within the similar hegemonic Graeco-Roman gender ideology. It concludes with some reflections on the effects ofa hegemonic ideology and raises questions on the possibility of emancipatory agency.

This paper is concerned with the tearing method according to Francois Cellier. Tearing is used to reduce the dimension of algebraic loops, which inevitably arise in the modelling of scientific systems using differential-algebraic equations, as far as possible to achieve an efficient simulation. However, the original tearing method according to Cellier is not suitable for the application in practice, since restrictions on the solvability of equations for variables, and other features, which appear in reality, are not considered. In this work, different changes to the method are introduced and tested, which make it possible to use Cellier Tearing in practice. In addition, the modeller can influence the selection of tearing variables. Modifications of the integrated heuristic are presented, whose efficiency is statistically evaluated at the end of this work. With these changes and the new heuristics, Cellier's method becomes a very suitable way to optimize the efficiency of simulation in practice.

Efficient calculation of the solutions of nonlinear optimal control problems (NOCPs) is becoming more and more important for today’s control engineers. The systems to be controlled are typically described using differential-algebraic equations (DAEs), which can be conveniently formulated in Modelica. In addition, the corresponding optimization problem can be expressed using Optimica. Solution algorithms based on collocation methods are highly suitable for discretizing the underlying dynamic model formulation. Thereafter, the corresponding discretized optimization problem can be solved, e.g. by the interior-point optimizer Ipopt. The performance of the optimizer heavily depends on the availability of derivative information for the underlying optimization problem. Typically, the gradient of the objective function, the Jacobian of the DAEs as well as the Hessian matrix of the corresponding Lagrangian formulation need to be determined. If only some or none of these derivatives are provided, usually numerical approximations are used by the optimizer internally. OpenModelica supports the Optimica language and is capable of automatically generating the discretized optimization problem using collocation methods as well as the whole symbolic machinery available. In addition, all necessary derivative information is determined using the automatic differentiation capabilities of ADOL-C, which has now been integrated into the OpenModelica environment.

This article meditates on the ambiguity of the concept of 'history' in Christian thought and in the historiography of Christian origins. After exploring the ambiguity of 'history', using Jesus as the illustrative case in point, it is argued that 'history' is itself the result of a complex process of historical production, a production of the kind that renders history, especially histories of highly valued origins, into narrative representations of believed-in imaginings, into mythographies that are nevertheless taken to be histories. Recognizing that history is fictioned to serve interests in the present turns history always into 'our' history, and recognizing, too, that this history is imagined to be history as it really was and the only history there can be- in effect turning the past into a simulacrum3/4. exposes 'history' as a mechanism for rationalising wordviews, social constitutions, and cultural preferences. Intellectually and morally, it exposes the fact that 'doing history' is never an innocent doing.

The high abstraction level of equation-based objectoriented languages (EOO) such as Modelica has the drawback that programming and modeling errors are often hard to find. In this paper we present the first integrated debugger for equation-based languages like Modelica, which can combine static and dynamic methods for run-time debugging of equation-based Modelica models during simulations. This builds on and extends previous results from a transformational static equation debugger and a dynamic debugger for the algorithmic subset of Modelica.

Derivatives, or Jacobians, are commonly required by numerical algorithms. Access to accurate Jacobians often improves the performance and robustness of algorithms, and in addition, efficient implementation of Jacobian computations can reduce the over-all execution time. In this paper, we present methods for computing Jacobians in the context of the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI), and Modelica. Two prototype implementations, in JModelica.org and OpenModelica are presented and compared in industrial benchmarks.
