The correspondence between work goals, work requirements, and available organizational rewards is a primary determinant of job satisfaction and motivation and is also likely to impact job performance. Research suggests managers’ but not business students’ work goal priorities are well matched with the work requirements and available rewards of modern business organizations. Educational implications are discussed and recommendations are made to increase students’ understanding of the importance and impact of work goals in modern organizations and to facilitate their adjustment to the reward conditions and work requirements that they are likely to face in these organizations. The recommended work goal and adjustment module, which is integrated into the topic of motivation, is also expected to increase student understanding and interest in the motivation material by encouraging students to apply it to work adjustment and by helping them more personally relate to the motivation principles applied.

Customer feedback capabilities and mechanisms were identified and evaluated in30 bank and credit union sites in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Additionally, 82 US Internet bank sites were identified and evaluated withrespect to their customer feedback capabilities. Comparisons were made between the brick/mortar and Internet banks and their respective feedback mechanisms. While this study identified a number of value‐enhancing customer feedback characteristics employed in banks, many of these financial institutions were found to be lacking even the most basic methods of feedback collection. Suggestions for improvement and areas for future research were included in the study.

Differences between public and private-sector organizations were proposed to lead to different ethical perceptions, principles and judgments. As expected, employees working in the public and private sector and enrolled in a night MBA program did display significantly different ethical judgments that appeared to be partially, but not completely explained by significant differences in the ethical principles they reported emphasizing. Ethical decision-making models suggest, as we do, that differing ethical perceptions also played a part in the different judgments found.

Differences between upper and lower division business students’ work goals suggest that changes had occurred as the students progressed through the curriculum that are likely to be functional for their work adjustment in modern organizations affected by current trends in job and organization design. However, some student priorities remained poorly matched with the available rewards and work requirements they are likely to find in these organizations. The mismatched priorities contrasted sharply with those displayed by U.S. managers in a previous study.

The Theory of Reasoned Action holds that behavior is rational and is dependent on the individual's analysis of available information. With this view, gambling activities can be explained in terms of gambling attitudes and subjective norms. This is a departure from the more traditional lines of research that examine the influence of demographic and selected personality variables on gambling behavior. According to the Theory of Reasoned Action, these variables could influence gambling behavior, but only to the extent that they affect attitudes, subjective norms, or both.

The policy of overbooking is a rational strategy for minimizing costs in a situation where reserved service is not always honored. Finding the proper level of overbooking is simplified through the use of computer spreadsheet software. Data requirements include the specification of short costs, long costs, and no-show probabilities. Construction of the spreadsheet involves a straightforward entering of expected cost relationships for each overbooking alternative. Once established, the spreadsheet can rapidly calculate and find the optimal overbooking strategy. The spreadsheet is also useful for making rapid recalculations under changing conditions.

Humans tend to exhibit rather consistent biases when cognitively processing information. In a gaming environment, these biases can affect participation in games of chance. The availability bias reduces complex probalistic judgments to simpler ones through the ease to which relevant instances can be brought to mind. The representativeness bias improperly attributes characteristics to an entity or process based on evidence received in a limited setting. Biasing factors appear to be affected by individual differences and situational factors. The effect on gambling may manifest itself in terms of duration of play, money played, and satisfaction or dissatisfaction with play. Implications for treatment of pathological gamblers are discussed.
