The lives of the 11th Duke of Hamilton and glass designer Daniel Pearce intersected in early 1860s London when the Duke purchased a gift for his son and heir William. The gift was the Hamilton Vase, a luxury glass vessel engraved to the design of Mr. Pearce and further personalized for the young Marquis. Still in possession of the Hamilton family today, the Vase's biography reveals it as a portal to a multitude of intertwined relationships that capture the complex artistic, cultural and societal panorama of the Victorian era. This study will begin by building portraits of the collecting life of the 11th Duke of Hamilton and the art education and entrepreneurial life of designer Daniel Pearce. To give context to the creation of the Hamilton Vase, it will continue with a thorough background of nineteenth century Britain's golden age of glassmaking. The investigation of the Vase's story is advanced by an exploration of the multiple re-uses of the Hamilton Vase design and how the evolution of the design was affected by shifting consumer tastes, nineteenth-century interest in the exotic, scientific and technological advances, and design innovations in glassmaking. When the Hamilton Vase reappears in 1919, it is withdrawn as a lot in the second and final auction of the remaining contents of Hamilton Palace, one of the nation's most magnificent country houses and art collections in British cultural history. At that moment, the history the Vase narrates is one of socio-economic change with the decline of the aristocracy and a new age of a wealthy, educated and art-minded middle class. A full exposition of glass designer and decorator Daniel Pearce's life and career will add a new perspective to the understanding of the history of nineteenth-century British glass, its designers, manufacturers, consumers and collectors. It will highlight the pivotal role played by heretofore mainly anonymous glass artists and engravers and in numerous instances will suggest attributions for previously unidentified objects in museum and private collections. This study will contribute to current object-centered scholarship by using the Hamilton Vase to reveal hidden histories and noteworthy cultural intersections during the nineteenth century in Britain, one of the most complicated periods in the History of Design and the Decorative Arts. Excavating the history of the Hamilton Vase will increase current knowledge of the complex artistic and socio-economic networks at play in Britain and will uncover the pronounced significance of Daniel Pearce's seventy-year contribution to British glass history. Too, Pearce's connection to the 11th Duke of Hamilton as the purchaser of the Hamilton Vase affords an additional perspective on the Duke's collecting history and places it in the context of his collecting contemporaries. The relationship of Pearce and the 11th Duke also is an entryway through which to examine the role of the century's international expositions of art and industry. The elucidation of Pearce's significant contributions to the history of nineteenth-century British glass will be a new and original area of research within the History of Glass. Its analysis of the extraordinary visual record provided by the Pearce pattern book in the Dudley Archives combined with new historical research will contribute to a fuller understanding of the production and consumption of Britain's world-renowned nineteenth-century engraved art glass.

Advanced Care at Home is a Mayo Clinic hospital-at-home (HaH) program that provides hospital-level care for patients. The study examines patient- and community-level factors that influence health outcomes. The authors performed a retrospective study using patient data from July 2020 to December 2022. The study includes 3 Mayo Clinic centers and community-level data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The authors conducted binary logistic regression analyses to examine the relationship among the independent variables (patient- and community-level characteristics) and dependent variables (30-day readmission, mortality, and escalation of care back to the brick-and-mortar hospital). The study examined 1433 patients; 53% were men, 90.58% were White, and 68.2% were married. The mortality rate was 2.8%, 30-day readmission was 11.4%, and escalation back to brick-and-mortar hospitals was 8.7%. At the patient level, older age and male gender were significant predictors of 30-day mortality (P-value <0.05), older age was a significant predictor of 30-day readmission (P-value <0.05), and severity of illness was a significant predictor for readmission, mortality, and escalation back to the brick-and-mortar hospital (P-value <0.01). Patients with COVID-19 were less likely to experience readmission, mortality, or escalations (P-value <0.05). At the community level, the Gini Index and internet access were significant predictors of mortality (P-value <0.05). Race and ethnicity did not significantly predict adverse outcomes (P-value >0.05). This study showed promise in equitable treatment of diverse patient populations. The authors discuss and address health equity issues to approximate the vision of inclusive HaH delivery. Although gut host-pathogen interactions are glycan-mediated processes, few details are known about the participating structures. Here we employ high-resolution mass spectrometric profiling to comprehensively identify and quantitatively measure the exact modifications of native intestinal epithelial cell surface N-glycans induced by S. typhimurium infection. Sixty minutes postinfection, select sialylated structures showed decreases in terms of total number and abundances. To assess the effect of cell surface mannosylation, we selectively rerouted glycan expression on the host using the alpha-mannosidase inhibitor, kifunensine, toward overexpression of high mannose. Under these conditions, internalization of S. typhimurium significantly increased, demonstrating that bacteria show preference for particular structures. Finally, we developed a novel assay to measure membrane glycoprotein turnover rates, which revealed that glycan modifications occur by bacterial enzyme activity rather than by host-derived restructuring strategies. This study is the first to provide precise structural information on how host N-glycans are altered to support S. typhimurium invasion.

26. The Global Reporting Initiative, Transnational Corporate Accountability, and Global Regulatory Counter-Currents
- Author
-
Williams, Cynthia A.
- Abstract
In this essay, the Author provides an overview in Part I of some initiatives to require or encourage companies to produce specific ESG data, authored both by governments and by private standard-setters. In Part II, one disclosure initiative in particular will be discussed as an example of a transnational legal order (TLO), as defined by Professors Shaffer and Halliday,13 and that is the Global Reporting Initiative, which has become the benchmark corporate social disclosure framework. Part III identifies a number of significant questions about our knowledge of the real power of information strategies to change corporate behavior, as the GRI seeks to do, as well as questions about the efficacy of self-regulation generally. Part IV then asserts that the “legality” aspect is a centrally-important element of the TLO framework advanced by Shaffer and Halliday. Particularly regarding transnational corporate responsibility, reliance has been placed almost exclusively on “new governance” initiatives, which are generally non-binding, voluntary, collaboratively developed standards for responsible behavior. New governance standards have fascinated academics from a wide range of fields, including this author, leading to an explosion of literature on the cognate topics over the last ten to fifteen years. Yet, during this same period of time, Bi-lateral Investment Treaties (BITs) and free-trade agreements, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), have been negotiated throughout the world. These treaties generally permit private companies to challenge any government action—legislative, regulatory, or judicial—that is alleged to reduce the company’s future profits. These challenges are heard by private arbitrators and are not subject to judicial review. The contrast is stark between new governance forms of collaborative, often industry-led, voluntary standards for responsible action, and the limits on sovereign regulatory authority being developed as a result of the expansion of the investorstate system for arbitration pursuant to BITs and trade agreements, leading this author to remember the line in the movie the Wizard of Oz: “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.” To badly mix literary references, we may have fixed our collective attention on the construction of a transnational regulatory Potemkin village even as the man behind the curtain progressively undermines the capacity of the strong form of regulation, that of sovereign domestic law. It is in emphasizing the importance of legality and how transnational norms “touch down” in binding processes, court proceedings, contracts, or public proceedings that Shaffer and Halliday’s theory of Transnational Legal Orders reorients our thinking in a productive, and important, direction. Part V concludes.

27. Characteristics of High-Quality Career and Technical Education Teachers

Williams, Cynthia C.
- Abstract
This study was designed to explore high-quality teacher characteristics of Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers. It is generally acknowledged that promoting teacher quality is a key element in improving secondary education in the United States. While recent research has documented the importance of quality teaching in promoting student achievement, there is a lack of consensus on the characteristics of good teachers because identification of good teaching practices are often dependent on student learning outcomes. The purpose of the study was to explore and inventory the characteristics of Idaho's high-quality CTE teachers (i.e. knowledge and skills, beliefs, and practice) without using student learning outcomes as a measure. The survey was distributed to 770 postsecondary teachers in the State of Idaho with a response rate of 44.8%. Significant results from the study indicated Idaho's CTE teachers have strong self-efficacy, a growth mindset, and believe that having a mentor was related to their success as a teacher. The inventory of teacher characteristics formed the CTE-CTI Framework: Characteristics of a high-quality CTE teacher which depicted education and experience, professional development, beliefs, great teacher attitudes, and related practice components. This study is considered to be generalizable. With noted revisions, the CTE-CTI can be used to inventory the characteristics of high-quality CTE teachers. Complex glycans cover the gut epithelial surface to protect the cell from the environment. Invasive pathogens must breach the glycan layer before initiating infection. While glycan degradation is crucial for infection, this process is inadequately understood. Salmonella contains 47 glycosyl hydrolases (GHs) that may degrade the glycan. We hypothesized that keystone genes from the entire GH complement of Salmonella are required to degrade glycans to change infection. This study determined that GHs recognize the terminal monosaccharides (N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), galactose, mannose, and fucose) and significantly (p

31. Multiple Regression as a Practical Tool for Teacher Preparation Program Evaluation
- Author

Williams, Cynthia
- Abstract
In response to No Child Left Behind mandates, budget cuts and various accountability demands aimed at improving programs, colleges and schools of education are in need of practical, quantitative evaluation methods which can be utilized internally to meaningfully examine teacher preparation programs and related coursework. The utility of multiple regression as a tool for linking coursework to teacher certification outcomes was examined in two separate case studies: one examined data from a smaller, private university and the other examined data from a larger public university. Grade inflation, missing or confounding variables, bivariate correlations, beta weights, statistical assumptions, and power were statistical considerations. Results indicated multiple regression can provide meaningful program evaluation information when examining teacher preparation programs where fewer sections of courses are offered, such as at the private university level. Variance associated with multiple course sections being nested in individual courses was believed to interfere with multiple regression results for public university analyses. Methods such as hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) and growth mixture modeling (GMM) may be more appropriate when evaluating teacher preparation programs at larger universities where nested variables are often more prevalent.

Biomarkers may facilitate detection of gastric cancer at an earlier stage and reduce mortality. Here we sought to determine if the glycosylation profile of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) could distinguish patients with non-atrophic gastritis (NAG), duodenal ulcer (DU) and gastric cancer (GC). Serum IgG was released and analyzed using nano-LC-TOF mass spectrometry. Statistically significant false discovery rate (FDR)-adjusted p-values were observed for 18 glycans, eight that differed significantly between NAG and GC, three that distinguished NAG from DU, and eight that differed between DU and GC. The IgG glycosylation signature may be useful as a predictive marker for gastric cancer.

- Abstract
When one thinks of the fashion industry, one might think of famous designers and celebrity fashion shows. Today, fashion is a $1.2 trillion global industry, employing 1.9 million people in the United States, creating a positive impact on regional economies across the country (JEC, 2015; US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2017). Presently, 90% of apparel design and production has gone overseas or elsewhere in the world (Robinson, 2013). Manufacturing today requires "universal participation" (Bill, 2011); meaning garments designed in one country, made in fabric from a second country, assembled in a third country, then shipped back to the country of the original design, to be sold at retail in a matter of weeks. In the past, all one needed to know was some sewing skills, fabric knowledge and garment construction to begin a career in fashion. Today, a career in fashion requires a different set of skills, making fashion education more prevalent and crucial than ever before. The interest in a fashion career has grown over the last decades, requiring many schools once offering degrees in home economics to revisit their fashion courses, revamp their curriculum and rehire faculty with academic degrees, who are currently out in the fashion field. But do students know what actual skills are needed to transition from the classroom out into the field, or recognize good indicators of what a fashion program should offer? This study is designed to research, measure and analyze this phenomenon. This study is organized into five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the topics of fashion education, the fashion industry, and specialized accreditation for fashion programs in the USA, including the research questions that form the foundation for this study. Chapter 2 researches the literature review of previous studies, NASAD, the only accreditation in the USA for all art and design programs and profiles of four colleges that offer fashion programs. Chapter 3 discusses methodology and the survey instrument used to collect data. Chapter 4 discusses the results of the survey and Chapter 5 presents conclusions and recommendations drawn from data findings. - Abstract
The purpose of the study was to advance a model for evaluating educational administrator preparation programs at the individual course level in a Texas university. Results indicated that, of the two preprogram and seven program core principal preparation courses examined, only two had a significant impact on the pass rate on the TExES Principal Certification Exam. Findings revealed that courses titled "Programs and Procedures in Supervision" and "Public School Law" were significant predictors of student success on the state-mandated exam. Although findings derived from this specific study cannot be generalized beyond the specific program examined, the model itself is generalizable and can be used to evaluate a variety of university programs. Implications for immediate implementation of the model are recommended and suggestions for future advancement of the model are discussed. (Contains 8 tables and 2 figures.)

- Abstract
Most (77%) of a sample of some 300 undergraduate psychology majors indicated plans for a Master's or PhD degree, and most expressed high valuation of a job with a Bachelor's degree. Respondents then received a brief career intervention via a take-home booklet containing information about admission to graduate school, and features of jobs with a baccalaureate. Subsequently, regarding graduate school, 30% of the students reported less interest, 64% indicated reduced estimates of own chances of admission, 49% raised estimates of prerequisite GPA, and 51% lowered estimates of percent applicants accepted. There were suggestions of coherence in changed views: for example, change scores for interest in-, and own chances for graduate school correlated 0.26. Attitudes toward jobs were generally unaffected. We offer our brief psychology career intervention as a general model for research and advising in other non-preprofessional undergraduate programs. BackgroundPrior studies suggested that glycans were differentially expressed in patients with ovarian cancer and controls. We hypothesized that glycan-based biomarkers might serve as a diagnostic test for ovarian cancer and evaluated the ability of glycans to distinguish ovarian cancer cases from matched controls.MethodsSerum samples were obtained from the tissue-banking repository of the Gynecologic Oncology Group, and included healthy female controls (n = 100), women diagnosed with low malignant potential (LMP) tumors (n = 52), and epithelial ovarian cancers (EOC) cases (n = 147). Cases and controls were matched on age at enrollment within ±5 years. Serum samples were analyzed by glycomics analysis to detect abundance differences in glycan expression levels. A two-stage procedure was carried out for biomarker discovery and validation. Candidate classifiers of glycans that separated cases from controls were developed using a training set in the discovery phase and the classification performance of the candidate classifiers was assessed using independent test samples that were not used in discovery.ResultsThe patterns of glycans showed discriminatory power for distinguishing EOC and LMP cases from controls. Candidate glycan-based biomarkers developed on a training set (sensitivity, 86% and specificity, 95.8% for distinguishing EOC from controls through leave-one-out cross-validation) confirmed their potential use as a detection test using an independent test set (sensitivity, 70% and specificity, 86.5%).ConclusionFormal investigations of glycan biomarkers that distinguish cases and controls show great promise for an ovarian cancer diagnostic test. Further validation of a glycan-based test for detection of ovarian cancer is warranted.ImpactAn emerging diagnostic test based on the knowledge gained from understanding the glycobiology should lead to an assay that improves sensitivity and specificity and allows for early detection of ovarian cancer.

Glycomics, a comprehensive study of glycans expressed in biologic systems, is emerging as a simple yet highly sensitive diagnostic tool for disease onset and progression. This study aimed to use glycomics to investigate glycan markers that would differentiate patients with gastric cancer from those with nonatrophic gastritis. Patients with duodenal ulcer were also included because they are thought to represent a biologically different response to infection with Helicobacter pylori, a bacterial infection that can cause either gastric cancer or duodenal ulcer. We collected 72 serum samples from patients in Mexico City that presented with nonatrophic gastritis, duodenal ulcer, or gastric cancer. N-glycans were released from serum samples using the generic method with PNGase F and were analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. The corresponding glycan compositions were calculated based on accurate mass. ANOVA-based statistical analysis was performed to identify potential markers for each subgroup. Nineteen glycans were significantly different among the diagnostic groups. Generally, decreased levels of high-mannose-type glycans, glycans with one complex type antenna, bigalactosylated biantennary glycans, and increased levels of nongalactosylated biantennary glycans were observed in gastric cancer cases. Altered levels of serum glycans were also observed in duodenal ulcer, but differences were generally in the same direction as gastric cancer. Serum glycan profiles may provide biomarkers to differentiate gastric cancer cases from controls with nonatrophic gastritis. Further studies will be needed to validate these findings as biomarkers and identify the role of protein glycosylation in gastric cancer pathology.

- Abstract
This study of selected colleges and universities is intended to provide insight into a variety of African American studies (AAS) programs and departments to aid in the restructuring of the curriculum and method of instruction in the existing program at the University of South Carolina. As this review of the history and development of such programs demonstrates, the interdepartmental approach has proven effective at institutions with limited funds, as is shown by the examples of several large universities. However, this type of curriculum is most beneficial when there is a defined AAS department offering a variety of fundamental courses taught by a permanent AAS staff. This is the direction recommended for the University of South Carolina. An appendix summarizes types of programs at over 20 institutions, and a second appendix lists AAS programs across the country. (Contains 24 references and a separate list of 51 primary sources in the AAS field.) (SLD)
