Search

B-doped $\delta$-layers were fabricated in Si(100) using BCl$_{3}$ as a dopant precursor in ultrahigh vacuum. BCl$_{3}$ adsorbed readily at room temperature, as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) imaging. Annealing at elevated temperatures facilitated B incorporation into the Si substrate. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) depth profiling demonstrated a peak B concentration $>$ 1.2(1) $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$ with a total areal dose of 1.85(1) $\times$ 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ resulting from a 30 L BCl$_{3}$ dose at 150 $^{\circ}$C. Hall bar measurements of a similar sample were performed at 3.0 K revealing a sheet resistance of $R_{\mathrm{s}}$ = 1.91 k$\Omega\square^{-1}$, a hole concentration of $n$ = 1.90 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ and a hole mobility of $\mu$ = 38.0 cm$^{2}$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ without performing an incorporation anneal. Further, the conductivity of several B-doped $\delta$-layers showed a log dependence on temperature suggestive of a two-dimensional system. Selective-area deposition of BCl$_{3}$ was also demonstrated using both H- and Cl-based monatomic resists. In comparison to a dosed area on bare Si, adsorption selectivity ratios for H and Cl resists were determined by SIMS to be 310(10):1 and 1529(5):1, respectively, further validating the use of BCl$_{3}$ as a dopant precursor for atomic precision fabrication of acceptor-doped devices in Si.

Josephson junctions with weak-links of exotic materials allow the elucidation of the Josephson effect in previously unexplored regimes. Further, such devices offer a direct probe of novel material properties, for example in the search for Majorana fermions. In this work, we report on DC and AC Josephson effect of high-mobility, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) encapsulated graphene Josephson junctions. On the application of RF radiation, we measure phase-locked Shapiro steps. An unexpected bistability between $\pm 1$ steps is observed with switching times on the order of seconds. A critical scaling of a bistable state is measured directly from the switching time, allowing for direct comparison to numerical simulations. We show such intermittent chaotic behavior is a consequence of the nonlinear dynamics of the junction and has a sensitive dependence on the current-phase relation. This work draws connections between nonlinear phenomena in dynamical systems and their implications for ongoing condensed matter experiments exploring topology and exotic physics.

Exotic superconductors, such as high T$_C$, topological, and heavy-fermion superconductors, require phase sensitive measurements to determine the underlying pairing. Here we investigate the proximity-induced superconductivity in nanowires of SnTe, where an $s\pm is^{\prime}$ superconducting state is produced that lacks the time-reversal and valley-exchange symmetry of the parent SnTe. This effect, in conjunction with a ferroelectric distortion of the lattice at low temperatures, results in a marked alteration of the properties of Josephson junctions fabricated using SnTe nanowires. This work establishes the existence of a ferroelectric transition in SnTe nanowires and elucidates the role of ferroelectric domain walls on the flow of supercurrent through SnTe weak links. We detail two unique characteristics of these junctions: an asymmetric critical current in the DC Josephson effect and a prominent second harmonic in the AC Josephson effect. Each reveals the broken time-reversal symmetry in the junction. The novel $s\pm is^{\prime}$ superconductivity and the new Josephson effects can be used to investigate fractional vortices [1,2], topological superconductivity in multiband materials [3-5], and new types of Josephson-based devices in proximity-induced multiband and ferroelectric superconductors [6,7].

The study of superconducting materials that also possess nontrivial correlations or interactions remains an active frontier of condensed matter physics. NbSe$_2$ belongs to this class of superconductors and recent research has focused on the two-dimensional properties of this layered material. Here an investigation of the superconducting-to-normal-state transition in NbSe$_2$ is detailed, and found to be driven by dynamically-created vortices. Under the application of RF radiation, these vortices allow for two novel Josephson effects to be observed. The first is a coupling between Josephson currents and charge density waves in phase-slip junctions. The second is the Josephson detection of multi-band superconductivity, which is revealed in an anomalous magnetic field and RF frequency response of the AC Josephson effect. Our results shed light on the nature of superconductivity in this material, unearthing exotic phenomena by exploiting nonequilibrium superconducting effects in atomically-thin materials.

We report on the fabrication of Josephson junctions using the topological crystalline insulator Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$Te as the weak link. The properties of these junctions are characterized and compared to those fabricated with weak links of PbTe, a similar material yet topologically trivial. Most striking is the difference in the AC Josephson effect: junctions made with Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$Te exhibit rich subharmonic structure consistent with a skewed current-phase relation. This structure is absent in junctions fabricated from PbTe. A discussion is given on the origin of this effect as an indication of novel behavior arising from the topologically nontrivial surface state.

We study the association and dissociation dynamics of weakly bound heteronuclear Feshbach molecules using transverse RF-fields for expected parameters accessible through the microgravity environment of NASA's Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) aboard the International Space Station, including temperatures at or below nK and atomic densities as low as $10^8$/cm$^3$. We show that under such conditions, thermal and loss effects can be greatly suppressed resulting in high efficiency in both association and dissociation of Feshbach molecules with mean size exceeding 10$^4a_0$, and allowing for the coherence in atom-molecule transitions to be clearly observable. Our theoretical model for heteronuclear mixtures includes thermal, loss, and density effects in a simple and conceptually clear manner. We derive the temperature, density and scattering length regimes of $^{41}$K-$^{87}$Rb that allow optimal association/dissociation efficiency with minimal heating and loss to guide future experiments with ultracold atomic gases in space., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We propose and develop a Lexicocalorimeter: an online, interactive instrument for measuring the "caloric content" of social media and other large-scale texts. We do so by constructing extensive yet improvable tables of food and activity related phrases, and respectively assigning them with sourced estimates of caloric intake and expenditure. We show that for Twitter, our naive measures of "caloric input", "caloric output", and the ratio of these measures are all strong correlates with health and well-being measures for the contiguous United States. Our caloric balance measure in many cases outperforms both its constituent quantities, is tunable to specific health and well-being measures such as diabetes rates, has the capability of providing a real-time signal reflecting a population's health, and has the potential to be used alongside traditional survey data in the development of public policy and collective self-awareness. Because our Lexicocalorimeter is a linear superposition of principled phrase scores, we also show we can move beyond correlations to explore what people talk about in collective detail, and assist in the understanding and explanation of how population-scale conditions vary, a capacity unavailable to black-box type methods., Comment: Manuscript: 17 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, Supplementary Information: 10 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

We demonstrate that the concerns expressed by Garcia et al. are misplaced, due to (1) a misreading of our findings in [1]; (2) a widespread failure to examine and present words in support of asserted summary quantities based on word usage frequencies; and (3) a range of misconceptions about word usage frequency, word rank, and expert-constructed word lists. In particular, we show that the English component of our study compares well statistically with two related surveys, that no survey design influence is apparent, and that estimates of measurement error do not explain the positivity biases reported in our work and that of others. Optical Feshbach resonances (OFRs) have generated significant experimental interest in recent years. These resonances are promising for many-body physics experiments, yet the practical application of OFRs has been limited. The theory of OFRs has been based on an approximate model that fails in important detuning regimes, and the incomplete theoretical understanding of this effect has hindered OFR experiments. We present the most complete theoretical treatment of OFRs to date, demonstrating important characteristics that must be considered in OFR experiments and comparing OFRs to the well-studied case of magnetic Feshbach resonances. We also present a comprehensive treatment of the approximate OFR model, including a study of the range of validity for this model. Finally, we derive experimentally useful expressions that can be applied to real experimental data to extract important information about the resonance structure of colliding atoms.

The electronic properties of graphene are described by a Dirac Hamiltonian with a fourfold symmetry of spin and valley. This symmetry may yield novel fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at high magnetic field depending on the relative strength of symmetry breaking interactions. However, observing such states in transport remains challenging in graphene, as they are easily destroyed by disorder. In this work, we observe in the first two Landau levels (v<6) the composite-fermion sequences of FQH states at p/(2p+1) between each integer filling factor. In particular, odd numerator fractions appear between v=1 and v=2, suggesting a broken valley symmetry, consistent with our observation of a gap at charge neutrality and zero field. Contrary to our expectations, the evolution of gaps in a parallel magnetic field suggests that states in the first Landau level are not spin-polarized even up to very large out of plane fields.

We report low-temperature magnetoconductance measurements of a patterned two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the surface of strontium titanate, gated by an ionic liquid electrolyte. We observe universal conductance fluctuations, a signature of phase-coherent transport in mesoscopic devices. From the universal conductance fluctuations we extract an electron dephasing rate linear in temperature, characteristic of electron-electron interaction in a disordered conductor. Furthermore, the dephasing rate has a temperature-independent offset, suggestive of unscreened local magnetic moments in the sample., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The exquisite control exhibited over quantum states of individual particles has revolutionized the field of precision measurement, as exemplified by the most accurate atomic clock realized in single trapped ions. Whereas many-atom lattice clocks have shown advantages in measurement precision over trapped-ion clocks, their accuracy has remained 20 times worse. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, that a many-atom system achieves accuracy (6x10^{-18}) better than a single ion-based clock, with vastly reduced averaging times (3000 s). This is the first time a single clock has achieved the best performance in all three key ingredients necessary for consideration as a primary standard - stability, reproducibility, and accuracy. This work paves the way for future experiments to integrate many-body quantum state engineering into the frontiers of quantum metrology, creating exciting opportunities to advance precision beyond the standard quantum limit. Many-particle optical lattice clocks have the potential for unprecedented measurement precision and stability due to their low quantum projection noise. However, this potential has so far never been realized because clock stability has been limited by frequency noise of optical local oscillators. By synchronously probing two 87Sr lattice systems using a laser with a thermal noise floor of 1e-15, we remove classically correlated laser noise from the intercomparison, but this does not demonstrate independent clock performance. With an improved optical oscillator that has a 1e-16 thermal noise floor, we demonstrate an order of magnitude improvement over the best reported stability of any independent clock, achieving a fractional instability of 1e-17 in 1000 s of averaging time for synchronous or asynchronous comparisons. This result is within a factor of 2 of the combined quantum projection noise limit for a 160 ms probe time with ~10^3 atoms in each clock. We further demonstrate that even at this high precision, the overall systematic uncertainty of our clock is not limited by atomic interactions. For the second Sr clock, which has a cavity-enhanced lattice, the atomic-density-dependent frequency shift is evaluated to be -3.11e-17 with an uncertainty of 8.2e-19., Comment: Final published version

The fate of the low-temperature conductance at the charge-neutrality (Dirac) point in a single sheet of graphene is investigated down to 20 mK. As the temperature is lowered, the peak resistivity diverges with a power-law behavior and becomes as high as several Megohms per square at the lowest temperature, in contrast with the commonly observed saturation of the conductivity. As a perpendicular magnetic field is applied, our device remains insulating and directly transitions to the broken-valley-symmetry, nu=0 quantum Hall state, indicating that the insulating behavior we observe at zero magnetic field is a result of broken valley symmetry. Finally we discuss the possible origins of this effect.

We report on transport properties of Josephson junctions in hybrid superconducting-topological insulator devices, which show two striking departures from the common Josephson junction behavior: a characteristic energy that scales inversely with the width of the junction, and a low characteristic magnetic field for suppressing supercurrent. To explain these effects, we propose a phenomenological model which expands on the existing theory for topological insulator Josephson junctions.

We report on the fabrication and measurement of a graphene tunnel junction using hexagonal-boron nitride as a tunnel barrier between graphene and a metal gate. The tunneling behavior into graphene is altered by the interactions with phonons and the presence of disorder. We extract prop- erties of graphene and observe multiple phonon-enhanced tunneling thresholds. Finally, differences in the measured properties of two devices are used to shed light on mutually-contrasting previous results of scanning tunneling microscopy in graphene.

We report low-temperature, high-field magnetotransport measurements of SrTiO3 gated by an ionic gel electrolyte. A saturating resistance upturn and negative magnetoresistance that signal the emergence of the Kondo effect appear for higher applied gate voltages. This observation, enabled by the wide tunability of the ionic gel-applied electric field, promotes the interpretation of the electric field-effect induced 2D electron system in SrTiO3 as an admixture of magnetic Ti3+ ions, i.e. localized and unpaired electrons, and delocalized electrons that partially fill the Ti 3d conduction band., Comment: Minor changes and Supp Info added

Using a narrow intercombination line in alkaline earth atoms to mitigate large inelastic losses, we explore the Optical Feshbach Resonance (OFR) effect in an ultracold gas of bosonic $^{88}$Sr. A systematic measurement of three resonances allows precise determinations of the OFR strength and scaling law, in agreement with coupled-channels theory. Resonant enhancement of the complex scattering length leads to thermalization mediated by elastic and inelastic collisions in an otherwise ideal gas. We investigate transport in locally-gated graphene devices, where carriers are injected and collected along, rather than across, the gate edge. Tuning densities into the p-n regime significantly reduces resistance along the p-n interface, while resistance across the interface increases. This provides an experimental signature of snake states, which zig-zag along the p-n interface and remain stable as applied perpendicular magnetic field approaches zero. Snake states appear as a peak in transverse resistance measured along the p-n interface. We investigate transport in a gate-defined graphene quantum point contact in the quantum Hall regime. Edge states confined to the interface of p and n regions in the graphene sheet are controllably brought together from opposite sides of the sample and allowed to mix in this split-gate geometry. Among the expected quantum Hall features, an unexpected additional plateau at 0.5 h/e^2 is observed. Ballistic semiconductor structures have allowed the realization of optics-like phenomena in electronics, including magnetic focusing and lensing. An extension that appears unique to graphene is to use both n and p carrier types to create electronic analogs of optical devices having both positive and negative indices of refraction. Here, we use gate-controlled density with both p and n carrier types to demonstrate the analog of the fiber-optic guiding in graphene. Two basic effects are investigated: (1) bipolar p-n junction guiding, based on the principle of angle-selective transmission though the graphene p-n interface, and (2) unipolar fiber-optic guiding, using total internal reflection controlled by carrier density. Modulation of guiding efficiency through gating is demonstrated and compared to numerical simulations, which indicates that interface roughness limits guiding performance, with few-nanometer effective roughness extracted. We observe enhanced three-body recombination in an ultracold three-component $^6$Li Fermi gas with large but unequal scattering lengths attributable to an excited Efimov trimer state near the three-atom scattering threshold. We find excellent agreement between the measured three-body recombination rate and the recombination rate calculated in the zero-range approximation where the only free parameters are the Efimov parameters $\kappa_*$ and $\eta_*$. The value of $\kappa_*$ determined by the location of the Efimov resonance we observe at 895 G also predicts the locations of loss features previously observed near 130 and 500 G \cite{Jochim08,OHara09} suggesting that all three features are associated with universal Efimov trimer states. We report on the etching of graphene devices with a helium ion beam, including in situ electrical measurement during lithography. The etching process can be used to nanostructure and electrically isolate different regions in a graphene device, as demonstrated by etching a channel in a suspended graphene device with etched gaps down to about 10 nm. Graphene devices on silicon dioxide (SiO2) substrates etch with lower He ion doses and are found to have a residual conductivity after etching, which we attribute to contamination by hydrocarbons.

We report nanoscale patterning of graphene using a helium ion microscope configured for lithography. Helium ion lithography is a direct-write lithography process, comparable to conventional focused ion beam patterning, with no resist or other material contacting the sample surface. In the present application, graphene samples on Si/SiO2 substrates are cut using helium ions, with computer controlled alignment, patterning, and exposure. Once suitable beam doses are determined, sharp edge profiles and clean etching are obtained, with little evident damage or doping to the sample. This technique provides fast lithography compatible with graphene, with ~15 nm feature sizes.

Measurement and theory of the two-terminal conductance of monolayer and bilayer graphene in the quantum Hall regime are compared. We examine features of conductance as a function of gate voltage that allow monolayer, bilayer, and gapped samples to be distinguished, including N-shaped distortions of quantum Hall plateaus and conductance peaks and dips at the charge neutrality point. Generally good agreement is found between measurement and theory. Possible origins of discrepancies are discussed.

We investigate the stability of a three spin state mixture of ultracold fermionic $^6$Li atoms over a range of magnetic fields encompassing three Feshbach resonances. For most field values, we attribute decay of the atomic population to three-body processes involving one atom from each spin state and find that the three-body loss coefficient varies by over four orders of magnitude. We observe high stability when at least two of the three scattering lengths are small, rapid loss near the Feshbach resonances, and two unexpected resonant loss features. At our highest fields, where all pairwise scattering lengths are approaching $a_t = -2140 a_0$, we measure a three-body loss coefficient $L_3 \simeq 5\times 10^{-22} \mathrm{cm}^6/\mathrm{s}$ and a trend toward lower decay rates for higher fields indicating that future studies of color superfluidity and trion formation in a SU(3) symmetric Fermi gas may be feasible.

We propose a method to prepare a sample of fermionic atoms in a three-dimensional (3D) optical lattice at unprecedentedly low temperatures and uniform filling factors. The process involves adiabatic loading of atoms into multiple energy bands of an optical lattice followed by a filtering stage whereby atoms from all but the ground band are removed. Of critical importance is the use of a non-harmonic trapping potential, taken here to be the radial profile of a high-order Laguerre-Gaussian laser beam, to provide external confinement for the atoms. For realistic experimental parameters, this procedure should produce samples with temperatures $\sim10^{-3}$ of the Fermi temperature. This would allow the investigation of the low-temperature phase diagram of the Fermi-Hubbard model as well as the initialization of a high-fidelity quantum register., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report measurements of current noise in single- and multi-layer graphene devices. In four single-layer devices, including a p-n junction, the Fano factor remains constant to within +/-10% upon varying carrier type and density, and averages between 0.35 and 0.38. The Fano factor in a multi-layer device is found to decrease from a maximal value of 0.33 at the charge-neutrality point to 0.25 at high carrier density. We report on the fabrication and transport studies of a single-layer graphene p-n junction. Carrier type and density in two adjacent regions are individually controlled by electrostatic gating using a local top gate and a global back gate. A functionalized Al203 oxide that adheres to graphene and does not significantly affect its electronic properties is described.
