10. Teacher Recruitment and Retainment Challenges Post-COVID-19: A Case Study of K-12 School Districts

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand recruitment and retainment challenges districts faced pre-COVID-19 and changes or additional challenges faced post-COVID-19. Through this study, human resources administrators and teaching and learning administrators were interviewed in pairs and discussed challenges their district has faced related to recruitment and retainment of teachers pre-COVID-19 and post-COVID-19. Further, the participant pairs described strategies their districts are using to recruit and retain teachers. A qualitative case study approach was used to identify themes and sub-themes discussing recruitment and retention strategies and challenges pre-COVID-19 and post-COVID-19. The consistent themes which emerged from the analysis included: teacher candidate characteristics, recruitment strategies, factors for mobility, and factors and strategies for retention. Within these areas, additional subthemes emerged. Using qualitative methodology and analytical theory, I found alignment between participant responses and theory. By using the theoretical framework provided by Bolman and Deal (2017), I further analyzed reasons teachers are leaving the profession, impacts their departure has and strategies for retainment of teachers. The four frames outlined by Bolman and Deal (2017) are depicted in quadrants: the structural frame, the human resources frame, the political frame and the symbolic frame. In addition to the framework provided by Bolman and Deal, Bandura offers a theory on self-efficacy that complements and adds additional insight to the themes and subthemes. The impact of recruitment and retainment challenges school districts face has an impact on the workforce and will impact student learning if not addressed. This study gives school districts specific strategies to intentionally recruit and retain teachers in impactful ways. Abstract

Despite organizations increasingly seeking talent to identify data to make better business decisions, many assignments provide the data for the students. This article encourages curriculum to introduce data and information request dimensions, identify data sources, write data and information requests, and reflect on data request examples. We propose a three-step writing exercise with a data and information request rubric. A pilot study for an operations management data and information request revealed that participants struggled to specify four data request dimensions: an appropriate recipient, adequate data, a data format, and an information security level.

14. A labour of attentiveness : the emergent place-responsive praxis of matter and context in R.D. Laing's Archway community

Abstract

The ideas within this thesis emerged via a place-responsive Practice-as-Research investigation of psychiatrist R.D Laing's Archway community, depicted in Robinson's film Asylum (1972). My examination focusses on Laing's system of material and contextual engagement I define as a Labour of Attentiveness: an emergent nexus of relationality and care that fosters closer authentic relationships via small material acts, in contexts, across qualities of time. Laing was much criticised by the psychiatric establishment of his day for not producing a repeatable scientific methodology, so I analyse these critiques with reference to key debates from New Materialists Karen Barad, Jane Bennett, Rosi Braidotti and Donna Haraway, to question whether Laing's legacy can be better understood by being repositioned within the "turn to matter" philosophies of New Materialisms. My second question investigates whether Laing's model of navigation through matter towards playful, unexpected co-constitutive outcomes establishes more authentic relationships with place, with particular value for place practitioners who, by embracing the boundaries of multiple disciplines in their practices, identify as "edge-dwelling". Drawing from Laing's methodology, I originate two personal place-responsive projects and two participatory events (PLACEing Objects exhibition and Day of Dialogue) that explore relationships with place, where dialogue is fostered on an equal platform. My results show that a Labour of Attentiveness holds a space for a nuanced dialogue via vulnerability, where co-constitutive dynamic engagement through small acts may be radical and personally transformative, and where interrogation and trust deepen through time. This challenges the traditional concepts of tangible artistic production, raising questions of how the processes of edge-dwelling practitioners may be valued and supported within interdisciplinary exchange. To allow analysis to shift across theory and practice, my thesis comprises this written exegesis, an experiential visual essay as sculptural object, image, installation and video documentation supplied on a supplementary USB, and a documentary film.

Abstract

Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) can boost risk prediction in late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) beyond apolipoprotein E (APOE) but have not been leveraged to identify genetic resilience factors. Here, we sought to identify resilience-conferring common genetic variants in (1) unaffected individuals having high PRSs for LOAD, and (2) unaffected APOE-ε4 carriers also having high PRSs for LOAD. We used genome-wide association study (GWAS) to contrast "resilient" unaffected individuals at the highest genetic risk for LOAD with LOAD cases at comparable risk. From GWAS results, we constructed polygenic resilience scores to aggregate the addictive contributions of risk-orthogonal common variants that promote resilience to LOAD. Replication of resilience scores was undertaken in eight independent studies. We successfully replicated two polygenic resilience scores that reduce genetic risk penetrance for LOAD. We also showed that polygenic resilience scores positively correlate with polygenic risk scores in unaffected individuals, perhaps aiding in staving off disease. Our findings align with the hypothesis that a combination of risk-independent common variants mediates resilience to LOAD by moderating genetic disease risk.

23. Business Writing Practice and Support over Time: Evidence from a Strategic Management Class

Abstract

Our study examines whether student business writing in pre-requisite courses and student use of university-provided writing support services are associated with student writing performance in the business capstone course in strategic management. Our results indicate that the number of writing center consultations over time and student performance in a pre-requisite business communication course were both positively associated with writing performance in the business capstone course. In addition, student performance in both the operations management and business communication courses were found to be strongly correlated with student performance in the capstone course. These findings support engaging students in repeated practice of business writing.

Abstract

BackgroundCommon chromosome 9p21 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) increase coronary heart disease risk, independent of traditional lipid risk factors. However, lipids comprise large numbers of structurally related molecules not measured in traditional risk measurements, and many have inflammatory bioactivities. Here, we applied lipidomic and genomic approaches to 3 model systems to characterize lipid metabolic changes in common Chr9p21 SNPs, which confer ≈30% elevated coronary heart disease risk associated with altered expression of ANRIL, a long ncRNA.MethodsUntargeted and targeted lipidomics was applied to plasma from NPHSII (Northwick Park Heart Study II) homozygotes for AA or GG in rs10757274, followed by correlation and network analysis. To identify candidate genes, transcriptomic data from shRNA downregulation of ANRIL in HEK-293 cells was mined. Transcriptional data from vascular smooth muscle cells differentiated from induced pluripotent stem cells of individuals with/without Chr9p21 risk, nonrisk alleles, and corresponding knockout isogenic lines were next examined. Last, an in-silico analysis of miRNAs was conducted to identify how ANRIL might control lysoPL (lysophosphospholipid)/lysoPA (lysophosphatidic acid) genes.ResultsElevated risk GG correlated with reduced lysoPLs, lysoPA, and ATX (autotaxin). Five other risk SNPs did not show this phenotype. LysoPL-lysoPA interconversion was uncoupled from ATX in GG plasma, suggesting metabolic dysregulation. Significantly altered expression of several lysoPL/lysoPA metabolizing enzymes was found in HEK cells lacking ANRIL. In the vascular smooth muscle cells data set, the presence of risk alleles associated with altered expression of several lysoPL/lysoPA enzymes. Deletion of the risk locus reversed the expression of several lysoPL/lysoPA genes to nonrisk haplotype levels. Genes that were altered across both cell data sets were DGKA, MBOAT2, PLPP1, and LPL. The in-silico analysis identified 4 ANRIL-regulated miRNAs that control lysoPL genes as miR-186-3p, miR-34a-3p, miR-122-5p, and miR-34a-5p.ConclusionsA Chr9p21 risk SNP associates with complex alterations in immune-bioactive phospholipids and their metabolism. Lipid metabolites and genomic pathways associated with coronary heart disease pathogenesis in Chr9p21 and ANRIL-associated disease are demonstrated.

36. School Breakfast Club Programs in Australian Primary Schools, Not Just Addressing Food Insecurity: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

Background: Many Australian primary schools have established school breakfast clubs (SBCs) to address concerns about children arriving at school hungry and the subsequent impact on learning but their effectiveness is uncertain. This study aimed to identify the perceived benefits, impacts, operational practices, and challenges of running SBCs. Method: Case studies with 10 Australian primary schools from different socioeconomic and geographic areas. Focus groups or interviews were held with 142 participants including students, parents/carers, school staff, and funding body representatives between July 2016 and October 2017. Results: There were no eligibility criteria to attend SBCs with all students able to attend, regardless of household income. Thus, participating in the SBC was often reported as a matter of choice rather than a consequence of food insecurity. Participants, including children, discussed the many social benefits of SBCs (i.e., social eating, relationship building, school connection, and engagement) as well as perceived improved classroom behavior. Challenges for program delivery included resource limitations, particularly, the reliance on volunteers and sourcing food. Discussion/Conclusion: SBCs offered a range of benefits beyond their primary goal of addressing food security. SBCs were highly valued by members of the school community for their social, welfare, well-being, and educational benefits, but program sustainability is constrained by resource limitations.

Abstract

This report summarizes the final results for the Green Jobs and Health Care (GJ-HC) Impact Evaluation, a study of selected grantees funded by two job training initiatives administered by the Employment and Training Administration (ETA) at the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). In response to the 2008 recession and as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, DOL provided grants to partnerships of workforce agencies, community colleges, non-profits, and other organizations to offer vocational training designed to improve the employment and earnings of unemployed workers and other individuals facing barriers to employment. The Pathways Out of Poverty grant initiative funded training to prepare individuals for employment in green industries, such as energy efficiency and renewable energy; and the Health Care and Other High Growth and Emerging Industries grant initiative focused on providing training in healthcare and other high-growth fields. The goals of this report are to: (1) document the impact of each of the four grant-funded programs on participation in training and receipt of credentials over an 18-month follow-up period; (2) determine the extent to which access to these services resulted in impacts on participants' employment and earnings, household income, public benefit receipt, and other outcomes over the same period; and (3) discuss implications of the results for policymakers and program operators.

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify the unique funds of knowledge among three Hispanic families living in the same city, specifically, how parents supported their children's mathematics learning through funds of knowledge. Participants contributed to their children's mathematics learning by promoting the five National Council of Teachers of Mathematics process standards--problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connection, and representation. Participating parents shared knowledge with their children through questioning and discussion, providing experiences, and promoting practice. In this study, participants valued education and supported their children's mathematics learning at home and school activities.

39. A Proposed Definition and Structure of Counselor Dispositions

Abstract

Dispositions have been identified as critical elements of counselor development and competency. Although there is currently no professional agreement regarding the definition or structure of counselor dispositions, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP 2016) accreditation standards require counselor educators to assess students' professional dispositions. We endorse the need for a disposition measure that yields reliable and valid scores for use in admissions and gatekeeping processes. We present results of a confirmatory factor analysis of the Professional Dispositions Scale--Counseling Student Version (PDS--CSV), which revealed that counselor dispositions are best understood as a single higher order factor made up of 9 subfactors addressing personal and professional considerations. Based on these findings, we propose a definition of counselor dispositions for consideration by professional colleagues.
