The effect of prioritization on information in working memoryhas primarily been examined in tasks containing a single typeof stimulus and with one item that is prioritized. However,many theories of working memory posit different types ofcomponents for the maintenance of verbal or visuospatialinformation. This study examined differences betweenprioritized and nonprioritized items as well as word and imagestimuli. Participants completed an association learning task inwhich working memory demands were varied along with thenumber of items to be prioritized. Following a short delay,retention was tested. Prioritization effects were identifiedduring both the learning and testing phases of the experiment,and the impact of prioritization was moderated by workingmemory demands of the task. Significant differences inaccuracy between word and image stimuli were only observedin the testing phase, with accuracy for verbal information beingworse. While prioritization improved accuracy and responsetimes during learning, it led to decreases in the testing phase.

The building industry requires the development of a ductile lateral force resisting system made of mass timber to help mass timber to continue to grow in popularity as the primary structural building material. The OpenSees framework was used to develop a numerical model of a single-story timber frame with a timber buckling-restrained brace, which was validated by the results of a previously completed series of quasistatic cyclic timber buckling-restrained brace (TBRB) component and subassembly tests. The experimental validation included a model developed for the hysteretic behavior of the TBRB and the rotational capacity of beam–column joints made with mass ply lam (MPL) panels, two slotted-in steel plates, and a number of steel dowels. The single-story model TBRB braced frame was then expanded to a numerical model of an eight-story mass timber buckling-restrained braced frame. The TBRB frame was analyzed with static pushover, quasistatic cyclic loads, and earthquake simulations. During the simulation of eleven design-level earthquake ground motions, the building experienced a peak interstory drift at of 2.54% at the first-floor level and a peak floor acceleration of 1.7g at the roof. The numerical model developed in this research of a timber buckling-restrained braced frame with TBRBs is novel and could be used to design timber buckling-restrained braced frames as a ductile lateral force resisting solution for mass timber buildings in seismic regions. Approximately 3% of all pregnancies are affected by fetal anomalies; consequently, mothers face the difficult decision of whether to continue or terminate their pregnancy. An estimated 47% – 90% of women choose to terminate these pregnancies. Induction of labor in cases of fetal demise is thought of as less controversial than induction termination, but nurses may resist and even refuse to care for women in these cases.

The building industry requires the development of a ductile lateral force–resisting system made of mass timber to allow mass timber to continue to grow in popularity as the primary structural building material. A timber frame with mass ply lam (MPL) beams and columns with a timber buckling-restrained brace (TBRB) was subjected to a quasi-static cyclic loading protocol defined according to the qualification procedure of conventional buckling-restrained braces (BRBs). Two of the TBRBs in this study included a carbon fiber–reinforced polymer (CFRP) wrap to help confine the two ends of the mass ply panel (MPP) casing and improve the performance of the brace. The experiments showed that the TBRB without any CFRP wrap met the requirements for qualification of conventional BRBs, and the mass timber braced frame was able to reach a drift ratio of 3.0%. The TBRB with CFRP wraps met the requirements for qualification of conventional BRBs; the confinement provided by the CFRP wraps postponed failure of the TBRB by enabling the steel core to reach a maximum strain of 3.1% in both tension and compression and the mass timber braced frame to reach a maximum drift ratio of 4.5%. A full-scale, reconfigurable, three-story steel building was constructed and its modal properties identified prior to shake table testing on the UC San Diego Large High Performance Outdoor Shake Table (LHPOST6). The aim of this preshake table test erection was to demonstrate the rapid constructability of the building and identify construction fit issues prior to its assembly on LHPOST6. This posed a unique opportunity to characterize the building's modal properties using a variety of non-destructive, low-amplitude techniques. To this end, two novel, non-destructive methods were used, namely: (1) impact tests conducted by swinging a tire from a crane to impact strategically selected locations, and (2) dynamic base vibration tests, induced by driving heavy machinery in the vicinity of the base of the structure. A system of accelerometers located throughout the structure captured waves propagating from each test to characterize the as-built dynamic properties of the building. Results from various system identification methods are presented and compared to theoretical and numerical analysis. Comparisons indicate that the theoretical, numerical, and experimentally determined periods are nominally within 15% of each other. The erection of the structure was complete over the course of 3 days and construction fitup issues were addressed. The structure was then rapidly deconstructed and stored prior to erection for full-scale shake table testing. This pre-shake table test exercise demonstrated the viability of two, simple, low-amplitude excitation approaches for use in the dynamic characterization of full-scale buildings, with results consistent with theoretical and numerical models. Objective Marketed as a validity test that detects feigning of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the Morel Emotional Numbing Test for PTSD (MENT) instructs examinees that PTSD may negatively affect performance on the measure. This study explored the potential that MENT performance depends on inclusion of "PTSD" in its instructions and the nature of the MENT as a performance validity versus a symptom validity test (PVT/SVT). Method 358 participants completed the MENT as a part of a clinical neuropsychological evaluation. Participants were either administered the MENT with the standard instructions (SIs) that referenced "PTSD" or revised instructions (RIs) that did not. Others were administered instructions that referenced "ADHD" rather than PTSD (AI). Comparisons were conducted on those who presented with concerns for potential traumatic-stress related symptoms (SI vs. RI-1) or attention deficit (AI vs. RI-2). Results Participants in either the SI or AI condition produced more MENT errors than those in their respective RI conditions. The relationship between MENT errors and other S/PVTs was significantly stronger in the SI: RI-1 comparison, such that errors correlated with self-reported trauma-related symptoms in the SI but not RI-1 condition. MENT failure also predicted PVT failure at nearly four times the rate of SVT failure. Conclusions Findings suggest that the MENT relies on overt reference to PTSD in its instructions, which is linked to the growing body of literature on "diagnosis threat" effects. A mass timber lateral force resisting system (LFRS) is proposed using a mass timber buckling restrained brace (TBRB) to improve the seismic resilience of mass timber buildings. To develop a resilient braced frame, it is essential to understand and quantify the behavior of the connections, including the possible failure modes and moment-rotation capacities. Cyclic and monotonic tests were conducted on six mass timber beam-column connections to study the response of a mass timber joint connected with slotted-in steel plates and mild steel dowels. The primary goal of the subassembly tests was to measure the maximum rotation, stiffness, ductility, and failure modes of such connections for both monotonic and cyclic loads. The tests showed that the connections with three steel dowel details reached a maximum rotation of 0.11 radians (6.3 degrees) with no loss of strength. In addition, a numerical model was developed to represent the moment-rotation relationship of the mass timber beam-column connections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Whether stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is noninferior to conventionally or moderately hypofractionated regimens with respect to biochemical or clinical failure in patients with localized prostate cancer is unclear., Methods: We conducted a phase 3, international, open-label, randomized, controlled trial. Men with stage T1 or T2 prostate cancer, a Gleason score of 3+4 or less, and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level of no more than 20 ng per milliliter were randomly assigned (in a 1:1 ratio) to receive SBRT (36.25 Gy in 5 fractions over a period of 1 or 2 weeks) or control radiotherapy (78 Gy in 39 fractions over a period of 7.5 weeks or 62 Gy in 20 fractions over a period of 4 weeks). Androgen-deprivation therapy was not permitted. The primary end point was freedom from biochemical or clinical failure, with a critical hazard ratio for noninferiority of 1.45. The analysis was performed in the intention-to-treat population., Results: A total of 874 patients underwent randomization at 38 centers (433 patients in the SBRT group and 441 in the control radiotherapy group) between August 2012 and January 2018. The median age of the patients was 69.8 years, and the median PSA level was 8.0 ng per milliliter; the National Comprehensive Cancer Network risk category was low for 8.4% of the patients and intermediate for 91.6%. At a median follow-up of 74.0 months, the 5-year incidence of freedom from biochemical or clinical failure was 95.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 93.3 to 97.4) in the SBRT group and 94.6% (95% CI, 91.9 to 96.4) in the control radiotherapy group (unadjusted hazard ratio for biochemical or clinical failure, 0.73; 90% CI, 0.48 to 1.12; P = 0.004 for noninferiority), which indicated the noninferiority of SBRT. At 5 years, the cumulative incidence of late Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) grade 2 or higher genitourinary toxic effects was 26.9% (95% CI, 22.8 to 31.5) with SBRT and 18.3% (95% CI, 14.8 to 22.5) with control radiotherapy (P<0.001), and the cumulative incidence of late RTOG grade 2 or higher gastrointestinal toxic effects was 10.7% (95% CI, 8.1 to 14.2) and 10.2% (95% CI, 7.7 to 13.5), respectively (P = 0.94)., Conclusions: Five-fraction SBRT was noninferior to control radiotherapy with respect to biochemical or clinical failure and may be an efficacious treatment option for patients with low-to-intermediate-risk localized prostate cancer as defined in this trial. The hydrogenation of CO 2 holds promise for transforming the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. However, the challenge lies in developing robust and selective catalysts for this process. Transition metal oxide catalysts, particularly cobalt oxide, have shown potential for CO 2 hydrogenation, with performance heavily reliant on crystal phase and morphology. Achieving precise control over these catalyst attributes through colloidal nanoparticle synthesis could pave the way for catalyst and process advancement. Yet, navigating the complexities of colloidal nanoparticle syntheses, governed by numerous input variables, poses a significant challenge in systematically controlling resultant catalyst features. We present a multivariate Bayesian optimization, coupled with a data-driven classifier, to map the synthetic design space for colloidal CoO nanoparticles and simultaneously optimize them for multiple catalytically relevant features within a target crystalline phase. The optimized experimental conditions yielded small, phase-pure rock salt CoO nanoparticles of uniform size and shape. These optimized nanoparticles were then supported on SiO 2 and assessed for thermocatalytic CO 2 hydrogenation against larger, polydisperse CoO nanoparticles on SiO 2 and a conventionally prepared catalyst. The optimized CoO/SiO 2 catalyst consistently exhibited higher activity and CH 4 selectivity (ca. 98%) across various pretreatment reduction temperatures as compared to the other catalysts. This remarkable performance was attributed to particle stability and consistent H* surface coverage, even after undergoing the highest temperature reduction, achieving a more stable catalytic species that resists sintering and carbon occlusion.

Thiospinels, such as CoNi 2 S 4 , are showing promise for numerous applications, including as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction, hydrodesulfurization, and oxygen evolution and reduction reactions; however, CoNi 2 S 4 has not been synthesized as small, colloidal nanocrystals with high surface-area-to-volume ratios. Traditional optimization methods to control nanocrystal attributes such as size typically rely upon one variable at a time (OVAT) methods that are not only time and labor intensive but also lack the ability to identify higher-order interactions between experimental variables that affect target outcomes. Herein, we demonstrate that a statistical design of experiments (DoE) approach can optimize the synthesis of CoNi 2 S 4 nanocrystals, allowing for control over the responses of nanocrystal size, size distribution, and isolated yield. After implementing a 2 5-2 fractional factorial design, the statistical screening of five different experimental variables identified temperature, Co:Ni precursor ratio, Co:thiol ratio, and their higher-order interactions as the most critical factors in influencing the aforementioned responses. Second-order design with a Doehlert matrix yielded polynomial functions used to predict the reaction parameters needed to individually optimize all three responses. A multiobjective optimization, allowing for the simultaneous optimization of size, size distribution, and isolated yield, predicted the synthetic conditions needed to achieve a minimum nanocrystal size of 6.1 nm, a minimum polydispersity (σ/ d̅ ) of 10%, and a maximum isolated yield of 99%, with a desirability of 96%. The resulting model was experimentally verified by performing reactions under the specified conditions. Our work illustrates the advantage of multivariate experimental design as a powerful tool for accelerating control and optimization in nanocrystal syntheses.
