This report presents a detailed analysis of the recreational space at the University of Alberta. The recreational facilities were assessed according to the use and satisfaction of facilities as stated by the students surveyed in a space facilities questionnaire, perceived needs as stated by the students, and discrepancies between existing facilities and the perceived needs. Study findings indicate: (1) a need for additional recreational space in the form of simple decentralized recreational rooms close to the various hubs of commuting student educational activities; (2) a need for improved campus communications regarding recreational organizations and events; (3) an increasing importance of indoor recreational activities with the onset of winter; and (4) the need for increased recognition of the importance of recreational facilities. The use of on-campus areas for study purposes by students at the University of Alberta were investigated. Study facilities were assessed according to: use and satisfaction of existing facilities, needs as stated by the students for study areas, discrepancies between the existing facilities and the type of facility the students feel they need. Major findings indicate: (1) the largest amount of students free time on campus was spent studying; (2) students utilize the libraries to a great degree during their free time; (3) students generally seemed satisfied with the existing facilities; (4) students indicated few areas where a "rap session" could take place without encroaching on other students' need for quiet study areas; (5) most students studied at home, but with a relatively low satisfaction level; and (6) resident students reported a high usage of on-campus study facilities. The patterns of time and transportation means adopted by the students and staff of the University of Alberta who commute from their residence to campus each week day are reviewed in an effort to assist in the University Long Range Development Plan. Emphasis is placed in the patterns in university commuting and the physical and behavioral aspects of commuting students and campus facilities. Major findings indicate: (1) the number of commuting students and commuting time and distance have increased disproportionately; faculty and staff have increased similarly; (2) there is a trend toward use of public transportation. The use of the automobile continues to be important; (3) the university has satisfied the vast majority of campus parkers with an increase in parking stalls of only 23.8% in the past five years; (4) the number of students holding part-time jobs and the number of students with families to care for has increased; and (5) the university is well used in the evenings, with 75% of the day-time population of students and staff returning to campus at least once per week in the evenings. This report presents a detailed analysis of the food facilities at the University of Alberta. Emphasis is placed on the three main supplies of food: the peak production of cafeterias at meal times, the snack facilities, and vending machines. Study results indicate: (1) extensive use of the students' union building cafeterias; (2) reported use of vending machines is high (80%); (3) over 50% of the sample reported bringing bag lunches; (4) food facilities for resident students are satisfactory; (5) students who reported returning home for meals (42.5% of the sample) indicated they were satisfied with the arrangements; and (6) the main place for eating remains the students' union building followed by buildings which house the larger vending machine complexes. This report presents an analysis of the free time on campus utilization of lounging space at the University of Alberta. Data were collected by a questionnaire limited to student life outside of the instruction time. Results indicated: (1) next to student study, lounging space is the most important informal time need; (2) students from many faculties reported intensive use of large centralized lounge areas; (3) student satisfaction with lounges is highest for the newest and/or largest lounges or for space offering the best lounging qualities; and (4) the student description of the ideal student lounge describes centralized and decentralized space of high physical and environmental qualities.
