By the end of 2018, 42 years after the landing of the two Viking seismometers on Mars, InSight will deploy onto Mars' surface the SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure) instrument; a six-axes seismometer equipped with both a long-period three-axes Very Broad Band (VBB) instrument and a three-axes short-period (SP) instrument. These six sensors will cover a broad range of the seismic bandwidth, from 0.01 Hz to 50 Hz, with possible extension to longer periods. Data will be transmitted in the form of three continuous VBB components at 2 sample per second (sps), an estimation of the short period energy content from the SP at 1 sps and a continuous compound VBB/SP vertical axis at 10 sps. The continuous streams will be augmented by requested event data with sample rates from 20 to 100 sps. SEIS will improve upon the existing resolution of Viking's Mars seismic monitoring by a factor of ∼2500 at 1 Hz and ∼200000 at 0.1 Hz. An additional major improvement is that, contrary to Viking, the seismometers will be deployed via a robotic arm directly onto Mars' surface and will be protected against temperature and wind by highly efficient thermal and wind shielding. Based on existing knowledge of Mars, it is reasonable to infer a moment magnitude detection threshold of Mw∼3 at 40∘ epicentral distance and a potential to detect several tens of quakes and about five impacts per year. In this paper, we first describe the science goals of the experiment and the rationale used to define its requirements. We then provide a detailed description of the hardware, from the sensors to the deployment system and associated performance, including transfer functions of the seismic sensors and temperature sensors. Abstract The introduction of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) to breast reconstruction has allowed surgeons to reexplore the prepectoral implant placement technique in postmastectomy breast reconstruction. Our institution adopted a novel approach using meshed ADM to lessen the financial burden of increased ADM utilization with the prepectoral breast reconstruction. This is a retrospective, single-center review of two-stage prepectoral breast reconstruction using meshed human-derived ADM for anterior prosthesis coverage. Patient demographics, oncologic data, perioperative characteristics, and complications were examined and reported as means with standard deviations. Cost-saving with the meshed technique was evaluated. Forty-eight patients (72 breasts) with a mean age of 48.5 ± 15.0 years (range 26–70 years) were included in the study. The mean follow-up time was 13.2 ± 4.4 months (range 4.1–25.8 months). Nineteen breasts (24.6%) experienced complications, with seromas being the most common complication (12.5%, n = 9). Expander removal and reoperation occurred at a rate of 8.3 and 9.7%, respectively. The average time to drain removal was 18.8 ± 6.6 days (range 8–32 days). Meshed ADM provided an average cost savings of $6,601 for unilateral and $13,202 for bilateral reconstructions. Our study found that human-derived meshed ADM can be safely used in two-staged prepectoral tissue expander-based breast reconstruction and can result in significant cost savings.

Prenatal ethanol exposure can negatively affect development, causing physical and/or cognitive deficits in the offspring. Behavioral changes are typically characterized during childhood, but they can also persist into adulthood. The extent of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) abnormalities depends upon the amount and manner of ethanol intake, leading to a large variety of animal models. In order to mimic the genetically diverse human condition, we examined an outbred strain of mice exposed to chronic gestational ethanol and characterized subsequent behavioral alterations during adulthood. To detect deficits in cognitive ability and/or motor function, we ran the mice through tests designed to detect either memory/learning ability or motor strength/skill. We tested cognitive responses using the Barnes Maze and the Open Field Aversion Test, and motor skills using Kondziela’s Inverted Screen Test and the rotarod. As adults, the FASD mice showed no significant differences on grip strength, open field, or the Barnes maze; however, we found that outbred mice who had experienced moderate prenatal ethanol exposure were slower to learn the rotarod as adults, though they did not differ in overall performance. Our data suggest a specific FASD vulnerability in motor learning ability, and also open the door to further investigation on the effect of ethanol on brain areas involved in motor learning, including the striatum.

R. Lunsford and G. Zay observed 15,114 sporadic meteors between 1992 and 1996 and their data are analyzed in this report. The data reveal a distinct seasonal trend with rates from July through December being 1.31 [+ or -] 0.10 times those from January through June. After the effect of the changing direction of the apex of Earth's way is removed, it is found that the July through December rates are 3 [+ or -] 10% higher than those from January through June. The average corrected hourly rate for sporadic meteors between 1992 and 1996 is 10.7 [+ or -] 1.3 at 2:00 AM local standard time under a limiting magnitude of 6.5, which is consistent with observations made between 1981 and 1991.
