Abstract

This paper explores how Islamic religious beliefs; spiritual practices and fatalism may act as barriers to a diagnosis of oral cancer in Rawalpindi/Islamabad Pakistan. The qualitative methodology is oral history and interviews took place with fifteen women diagnosed with oral cancer and receiving treatment in hospital. The research provides a model illustrating how religiosity, fatalism and the social determinants of health exist on a continuum and influence the perspectives of women in Pakistan, contributing to their late presentation and diagnosis of oral cancer. Analysis of the patients' oral histories, suggests improved communication between medical professionals and integration of spiritual/traditional healers into the existing health care system of Pakistan which may assist in reducing oral health inequalities.

Abstract

Derivatives of the widely used 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene have been considered using spin-flip time-dependent density functional theory, classical molecular dynamics and hybrid quantum mechanics / molecular mechanics. We identify a potential probe of membrane phase (i.e. to preferentially detect liquid-ordered regions of lipid bilayers), which exhibits restricted access to a conical intersection in the liquid-ordered phase but is freely accessible in less ordered molecular environments. The characteristics of this probe also mark it as a candidate for an aggregation induced emission fluorophore.

Abstract

Digital alloy Al0.85Ga0.15As0.56Sb0.44 and random alloy Al0.79In0.21As0.74Sb0.26 avalanche photodiodes with a 1-μm multiplication layer exhibit low excess noise under 543-nm laser illumination comparable to Si avalanche photodiodes. This has motivated a study of the optical characteristics of these materials. The absorption coefficients and complex refractive indices were extracted via variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry. Features of three semiconductor layer fitting approaches are compared, and a Kramers–Kronig-consistent basis spline function was chosen due to its flexibility and accuracy of approximating optical constants of quaternary materials. The external quantum efficiency has been calculated based on the extracted absorption coefficients and is shown to agree well with the measured external quantum efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study develops and demonstrates a realistic x-ray imaging simulator with computerized observers to maximize lesion detectability and minimize patient exposure. A software package, ViPRIS, incorporating two computational patient phantoms, has been developed for simulating x-ray radiographic images. A tomographic phantom, VIP-Man, constructed from Visible Human anatomical colour images is used to simulate the scattered portion using the ESGnrc Monte Carlo code. The primary portion of an x-ray image is simulated using the projection ray-tracing method through the Visible Human CT data set. To produce a realistic image, the software simulates quantum noise, blurring effects, lesions, detector absorption efficiency and other imaging artefacts. The primary and scattered portions of an x-ray chest image are combined to form a final image for computerized observer studies and image quality analysis. Absorbed doses in organs and tissues of the segmented VIP-Man phantom were also obtained from the Monte Carlo simulations. Approximately 25,000 simulated images and 2,500,000 data files were analysed using computerized observers. Hotelling and Laguerre-Gauss Hotelling observers are used to perform various lesion detection tasks. Several model observer tasks were used including SKE/BKE, MAFC and SKEV. The energy levels and fluence at the minimum dose required to detect a small lesion were determined with respect to lesion size, location and system parameters.
