This descriptive study explored the perspectives of 51 university nurse graduates from the St. Francis Xavier University School of Nursing. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected using telephone interviews to study a range of variables including geographic mobility patterns, career satisfaction and attitudes towards recruitment and retention factors. Given the negative perceptions in the media about nursing, the results of the study were unexpected and offer a sense of hope to those considering nursing as a career. Results indicate that graduates remained enthusiastic about their career choice and would choose nursing again as a career given the opportunity to do so. Furthermore, they would recommend nursing to others as a desirable career. The majority of graduates entered nursing because of a desire to make a meaningful difference in people's lives, and they were strongly influenced by positive nurse role models. Participants remained committed to a career in nursing, enjoyed considerable geographic mobility with migration to other Canadian provinces and the USA, but the majority returned to Canada for employment in nursing. The study confirms that the supportive nature of the work environment in which care is practised, the presence of visible and empowering nurse leaders, adequate compensation and benefits, and appropriate investment in continuing education and professional development of staff are significant factors in retaining nurses. Additional recommendations for enhanced recruitment and retention strategies are provided.

Female American black ducks (Anas rubripes) are known to move their broods from low- to high-nutrient rearing sites. We studied the extent of brood movement and fledging success in a northeastern Nova Scotia watershed. Annually, about half the broods moved either overland or along three rivers from small, widely dispersed oligotrophic–mesotrophic wetlands to a large hypertrophic tidal marsh. Mean brood size at fledging was 3.50 in the tidal marsh but 7.05 at the dispersed freshwater wetlands. Females that remained at dispersed sites fledged more ducklings than females that moved to the marsh. Attrition occurred predominantly in the marsh or in transit. Females fledged fewer young when they raised broods at the marsh than when the same females raised broods at inland sites. Females were as successful at nutrient-poor sites as at nutrient-rich sites. The study suggests that concentrating birds in nutrient-rich sites may be counterproductive in terms of female reproductive fitness and population recruitment.

This study examined the impact of an infant-feeding classroom activity on the breast-feeding knowledge and intentions of adolescents living in Nova Scotia, Canada. One hundred twenty-one students attending two high schools were administered one pretest and two posttest questionnaires. Students were arbitrarily assigned to a control or intervention group. The intervention group partook in a 60-minute classroom activity on infant feeding. Findings indicated that students in the intervention group demonstrated significantly greater breast-feeding knowledge at Posttest 1 and at 10 weeks postintervention. Students in the intervention group reported a significantly greater intention toward breast-feeding their own future children; an increase was sustained at 10 weeks. These findings suggest that adolescents’ knowledge of and intention toward breast-feeding may be positively influenced during their teen years. School nurses are well positioned to support and encourage the inclusion of breast-feeding content in school curricula to enhance adolescents’ knowledge and intentions toward breast-feeding.

It is purported in the literature that individuals who demonstrate co-dependent traits (consistently taking responsibility for others to the point of neglecting onself) enter the nursing profession to fulfill pathological needs and that nursing encourages co-dependent behaviour through its focus on "caring." This study was undertaken to determine whether nursing students have higher co-dependency scores than students in other programs. Data were collected through a questionnaire. A continuum-based Co-dependency Index was constructed with a Caring and Caretaking Sub-index to allow for more accurate measurement of co-dependency traits. In contrast to results reported in the literature, one-tailed testing indicated no significant relationship between co-dependency and university program. The results of this study suggest the need for a continuum approach to measuring co-dependency, to ensure that the presence of caring behaviours in measurement tools do not create a bias against nursing, a profession based on caring.
