A detailed account of liner delineation of chromosomes of archerfish, Toxotes chatareus (Perciformes: Toxotidae) employing conventional staining, NOR banding and molecular cytogenetics with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using 5S, 18S rDNAs and microsatellite d(CA)15, d(GA)15, d(CAA)10, d(CGG)10, and retrotransposonable Rex6 probes, is presented for the first time. The specimens were collected from the Chao Phraya River, Thailand. The mitotic chromosome preparations were directly carried out from kidney tissues of eight male and female fish each. The results revealed that the diploid chromosome number of T. chatareus was 2n = 48, the fundamental numbers (NF) were 50 in both male and female. The karyotype composed of two metacentric and 46 telocentric chromosomes. No irregularly sized chromosomes related to sex were observed. The nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were detected by Ag-NOR banding and 18S rDNA probe mapping. Both techniques revealed the presence NORs located on the long arm adjacent to the centromere of the single pair of the largest telomeric chromosome pair. The 5S rDNA sequences were located in two large telocentric pairs. One of them is coincident with 18S rDNA sites and another is found at interstitial subcentromeric region of the second telomeric pair. FISH with d(CA)15 and d(GA)15 probes showed that hybridization signals are abundantly distributed in all chromosomes, mostly in telomeric regions while d(CAA)10 and d(CGG)10 repeats are distributed in all chromosomes with high accumulation throughout the chromosomes in some pairs. Chromosomal mapping of the Rex 6 sequences, indicate a weak distribution in all chromosomes, with preferential accumulation at the centromere of the chromosome pair 7.

Asian river catfish (Pangasiusbocourti Sauvage, 1880) were cultured at five different stocking densities in cages (submerged volume 1 m3) suspended in a dugout pond from August to November 2009. Pangasiusbocourti fingerlings (mean weight 27.09 ± 0.54 g) were stocked at densities of 12, 25, 50, 100, and 200 fish m−3. At the end of 3 months, the harvest weights (gross yields) were, respectively, 2.05 ± 0.30, 5.20 ± 0.31, 10.60 ± 0.42, 19.98 ± 0.78, and 42.37 ± 0.41 kg m−3. The mean fish weights among the stocking densities of 25, 50, 100, and 200 fish m−3 were not significantly different, but were significantly higher than that of the 12 fish m−3 density. The specific growth rates among high stocking densities of 50, 100, and 200 fish m−3 were not significantly different; however, they were significantly higher than those of the low stocking densities of 12 and 25 fish m−3. Asian river catfish performed poorly at the lowest density. The results indicate an initial lower stocking threshold for Asian river catfish of above 5.20 kg m−3. The Asian river catfish cultured in small cages placed in a pond reached the desirable market size (>200 g) within a 90-day grow-out period. The results show that the maximum yield for Asian river catfish during a 3-month production cycle was not reached.

To investigate the growth and compensatory growth responses of juvenile Pangasius bocourti, a 16-week trial was conducted in 15 indoor tanks. Juvenile P. bocourti weighing a mean of 2 g were fed a diet (40% protein) at 5 different ration levels (4%, 6%, 8%, 10% and 12% of initial body weight) per day for 8 weeks (restricted-ration period) and then re-fed a diet (25% protein) at normal ration for another 8 weeks (normal-ration period). Participating farms in the Muang district of Nong Khai Province, were selected for the investigation of management practices and yields of marble goby, Oxyeleotris marmoratus, in integrated culture with Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The research took place from February to May, 2007. The observed production of O. marmoratus in integrated aquaculture ponds indicated a wide range of management practices. The yields of Oxyeleotris marmoratus were between 22.1 to 316 kg ha(-1) (average 81+/-78 kg ha(-1)). The farmers tended to prefer Oxyeleotris marmoratus not only as a by-product, but also as the main product from their ponds. Most farmers realized that Oxyeleotris marmoratus predate Nile tilapia fingerlings from the natural spawning of mature Nile tilapia in the ponds. With respect to consumed prey, the frequency of occurrence of prawns was 73.3%, whilst that of small fish was 43.3%. In terms of prey biomass, prawns were also the most abundant food item, giving the relative abundance of 56.0%. A preliminary trial on predation pressure was conducted to confirm the role of Nile tilapia fingerling as live feed for Oxyeleotris marmoratus in integrated aquaculture ponds and it was found that the daily predation pressure was between 1.90 to 2.46 fish day(-1).
