1. Application of flash method in the measurements of interfacial thermal resistance in layered and particulate composite materials

Abstract

Presented study concerns the possibility of evaluation of interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) between the constituents in composite materials with the use of flash technique. Two variants of such measurement are considered, the first of which is the measurement of ITR between two bonded layers of different materials which had been studied before by various researchers. The second tested measurement method is targeted at determination of ITR in particulate composites with low and moderate filler content based on their effective thermal conductivity. Method of such measurement is proposed and tested on two cases of particle-filled polymer composites. Positive verification results were obtained for polymer/glass composite in which the difference between thermal conductivities of matrix and filler is low. For a polymer filled with aluminum particles the evaluation of average ITR in the samples was impossible as the effective medium models applied in the method strongly underestimated the thermal conductivity of that material. The investigation confirmed the need for more accurate methods of macroscopic thermal properties prediction for composite media with high contrast of thermal conductivities of the constituents. 10. Simulation-based analysis of demand variability in supply chain

Abstract

Demand variability is one of the key issues in the management of today supply chains. This article examines problem of uncertainty in the supply chains caused by demand variability. Computer simulation is proposed to model the supply chain of the fertiliser industry in conditions of uncertainty. The aim of the investigations is twofold: firstly, to understand some of the underlying structures and factors which are generated from demand uncertainty and have impact on fluctuations through the supply chain; secondly to present the efficiency of using simulation modelling of the complex system, like supply chain, with uncertain environments.

Abstract

Abstract: Both insiders and analysts are involved in the collection and dissemination of information to the market, roles which impact heavily on price efficiency and resource allocation. The differences between the two groups, however, result in a competitive relationship with analysts at a disadvantage due to greater costs associated with information gathering. As a result they may choose not to participate in this one-sided competition. We employ transaction data to examine the impact of firm-year aggregate insider trading intensity on the level of analyst following. We find a negative relationship between the prevalence of insider trading and analyst coverage lending support to the crowding out hypothesis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

12. Simulation-based optimisation of inspection stations allocation in multi-product manufacturing systems

Abstract

In this paper a multi-product production systems (MPPS) with in-line quality control is examined. The problem of determining the optimal inspection strategy that results in lowest total inspection cost, while assuring required outgoing quality level is modelled discrete-event simulation is used to model the production system. The optimal allocation is determined by using a tabu search algorithm.

13. Modelling customers’ intentions to use contactless cards

Abstract

Since their introduction in the USA in 2002, contactless card payment systems have been widely regarded as the pinnacle of current retail banking technology. However, the potential demand and usage of this innovation has hitherto received little attention from the academic community. Ours is one of the first papers that explore the factors that are likely to govern acceptance and intentions to take-up the technology. The analysis utilises the methodological framework of the technology acceptance model (Davis, 1989; Davis et al., 1989) and develops a range of empirical representations. Our results lend support to the TAM conceptualisation and also indicate that some demographic characteristics imprint upon the intentions of potential users.

Abstract

Motivated by the recent gold price boom, this paper examines whether an asset bubble exists in the gold market. We approximate gold's fundamental value using several econometric models and apply a Markov regime-switching Augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF) test which has substantial power for detecting explosive behavior. Although our results are sensitive to the specification of the fundamental value, we show that a model accounting for the current European sovereign debt crisis accurately tracks the gold price observed in the market. We also note that inflation in a general commodity price index and gold ETF demand have a potential to explain the price trajectory.
