In the last few decades the development of ultrafast lasers has revolutionized our ability to gain insight into light-matter interactions. The appearance of few-cycle light sources available from the visible to the mid-infrared spectral range and the development of attosecond extreme ultraviolet and x-ray technologies provide for the first time the possibility to directly observe and control ultrafast electron dynamics in matter on their natural time scale. However, few-fs sources have hardly been available in the deep ultraviolet (DUV; 4-6 eV, 300-200 nm) and are unavailable in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV; 6-12 eV, 200-100 nm) spectral range, corresponding to the photon energies required for valence excitation of atoms and molecules. Here, we generate VUV pulses with $\mu$J energy tunable between 160 and 190 nm via resonant dispersive wave emission during soliton self-compression in a capillary. We fully characterize the pulses in situ using frequency-resolved optical gating based on two-photon photoionization in noble gases. The measurements reveal that in most of the cases the pulses are shorter than 3 fs. These findings unlock the potential to investigate ultrafast electron dynamics with a time-resolution that has been hitherto inaccessible when using VUV pulses.

The ability to perform attosecond-pump attosecond-probe spectroscopy (APAPS) is a longstanding goal in ultrafast science. While first pioneering experiments demonstrated the feasibility of APAPS, the low repetition rates (10-120 Hz) and the large footprints of existing setups have so far hindered the widespread exploitation of APAPS. Here we demonstrate two-color APAPS using a commercial laser system at 1 kHz, straightforward post-compression in a hollow-core fiber and a compact high-harmonic generation (HHG) setup. The latter enables the generation of intense extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulses by using an out-of-focus HHG geometry and by exploiting a transient blueshift of the driving laser in the HHG medium. Near-isolated attosecond pulses are generated, as demonstrated by one-color and two-color XUV-pump XUV-probe experiments. Entanglement is one of the most intriguing aspects of quantum mechanics and lies at the heart of the ongoing Second Quantum Revolution, where it is a resource that is used in quantum key distribution, quantum computing and quantum teleportation. We report experiments demonstrating the crucial role that entanglement plays in pump-probe experiments involving ionization, which are a hallmark of the novel research field of attosecond science. We demonstrate that the degree of entanglement in a bipartite ion plus photoelectron system, and, as a consequence, the degree of vibrational coherence in the ion, can be controlled by tailoring the spectral properties of the attosecond extreme ultra-violet laser pulses that are used to create them., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

The generation of coherent light pulses in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectral region with attosecond pulse durations constitutes the foundation of the field of attosecond science. Twenty years after the first demonstration of isolated attosecond pulses, they continue to be a unique tool enabling the observation and control of electron dynamics in atoms, molecules and solids. It has long been identified that an increase in the repetition rate of attosecond light sources is necessary for many applications in atomic and molecular physics, surface science, and imaging. Although high harmonic generation (HHG) at repetition rates exceeding 100 kHz, showing a continuum in the cut-off region of the XUV spectrum was already demonstrated in 2013, the number of photons per pulse was insufficient to perform pulse characterisation via attosecond streaking, let alone to perform a pump-probe experiment. Here we report on the generation and full characterisation of XUV attosecond pulses via HHG driven by near-single-cycle pulses at a repetition rate of 100 kHz. The high number of 10^6 XUV photons per pulse on target enables attosecond electron streaking experiments through which the XUV pulses are determined to consist of a dominant single attosecond pulse. The formation of an electron-hole plasma during the interaction of intense femtosecond laser pulses with transparent solids lies at the heart of femtosecond laser processing. Advanced micro- and nanomachining applications require improved control over the excitation characteristics. Here, we relate the emission of low-order harmonics to the strong laser-field-induced plasma formation. Together with a measurement of the total plasma density we identify the contribution of two competing ionization mechanisms - strong-field and electron-impact ionization.

Measurements of the phase of two-photon matrix elements are presented for resonant and antiresonant two-color ionization of helium. A tunable, narrow-bandwidth, near-infrared (NIR) laser source is used for extreme ultra-violet (XUV) high-harmonic generation (HHG). The 15th harmonic of the laser is used within (1+1') XUV+NIR two-photon ionization, and tuned in and out of resonance with members of the 1s$n$p $^1$P$_1$ ($n=3,4,5$) Rydberg series, covering a broad spectral range with high spectral resolution. The technique allows to observe characteristic rapid changes in the phase of the two-photon matrix elements around the resonances and, previously unobserved, at the antiresonances between the resonances. Similar effects are observed for (1+2') XUV+NIR three-photon ionization. The development of schemes for coherent nonlinear time-domain spectroscopy in the extreme-ultraviolet regime (XUV) has so far been impeded by experimental difficulties that arise at these short wavelengths. In this work we present a novel experimental approach, which facilitates the timing control and phase cycling of XUV pulse sequences produced by harmonic generation in rare gases. The method is demonstrated for the generation and high spectral resolution characterization of narrow-bandwidth harmonics ($\approx14\,$eV) in argon and krypton. Many experiments in attosecond science will benefit from attosecond pulses at high repetition rates with sufficient photon flux for pump-probe experiments. We use 7fs, 800nm pulses from a non-collinear optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (NOPCPA) laser system to generate few-pulse attosecond pulse trains (APTs) in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) at a repetition rate of 100kHz. Direct laser writing of surface waveguides with ultrashort pulses is a crucial achievement towards all-laser manufacturing of photonic integrated circuits sensitive to their environment. In this Letter, few-cycle laser pulses (with a sub-10 fs duration) are used to produce subsurface waveguides in a non-doped, non-coated fused silica substrate. The fabrication technique relies on laser-induced microdensification below the threshold for nanopore formation. The optical losses of the fabricated waveguides are governed by the optical properties of the superstrate. We have measured losses ranging from less than 0.1~dB/mm (air superstrate) up to 2.8~dB/mm when immersion oil is applied on top of the waveguide.

With the emergence of high-repetition-rate few-cycle laser pulse amplifiers, aimed at investigating ultrafast dynamics in atomic, molecular and solid state science, the need for ever faster carrier-envelope phase (CEP) detection and control has arisen. Here we demonstrate a high speed, continuous, every-single-shot measurement and fast feedback scheme based on a stereo above-threshold ionization time-of-flight spectrometer capable of detecting the CEP and pulse duration at a repetition rate of up to 400 kHz. This scheme is applied to a 100 kHz optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) few-cycle laser system, demonstrating improved CEP stabilization and allowing for CEP tagging.

Refraction is a well-known optical phenomenon that alters the direction of light waves propagating through matter. Microscopes, lenses and prisms based on refraction are indispensable tools for controlling the properties of light beams at visible, infrared, ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths. The large absorption of extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) radiation in matter, however, hinders the development of refractive lenses and prisms in this spectral region. Here, we demonstrate control over the refraction of XUV radiation by using a gas jet with a density gradient across the XUV beam profile. A gas phase prism is demonstrated that leads to a frequency-dependent deflection of the XUV beam. The strong deflection in the vicinity of atomic resonances is further used to develop a deformable XUV refractive lens, with low absorption and a focal length that can be tuned by varying the gas pressure. Our results provide novel opportunities in XUV science and open a route towards the transfer of refraction-based techniques including microscopy and nanofocusing, which are well established in other spectral regions, to the XUV domain., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The interaction of intense laser pulses with nano-scale particles leads to the production of high-energy electrons, ions, neutral atoms, neutrons and photons. Up to now, investigations have focused on near-infrared to X-ray laser pulses consisting of many optical cycles. Here we study strong-field ionization of rare-gas clusters ($10^3$ to $10^5$ atoms) using two-cycle 1.8~$\mu$m laser pulses to access a new interaction regime in the limit where the electron dynamics are dominated by the laser field and the cluster atoms do not have time to move significantly. The emission of fast electrons with kinetic energies exceeding 3keV is observed using laser pulses with a wavelength of 1.8~$\mu$m and an intensity of $1\times 10^{15}$~W/cm$^2$, whereas only electrons below 500eV are observed at 800nm using a similar intensity and pulse duration. Fast electrons are preferentially emitted along the laser polarization direction, showing that they are driven out from the cluster by the laser field. In addition to direct electron emission, an electron rescattering plateau is observed. We demonstrate a novel, single-shot ultrafast diagnostic, based on the dispersion-scan (d-scan) technique. In this implementation, rather than scanning wedges to vary the dispersion as in standard d-scan, the pulse to be measured experiences a spatially varying amount of dispersion in a Littrow prism. The resulting beam is then imaged into a second-harmonic generation crystal and an imaging spectrometer is used to measure the two-dimensional trace, which is analyzed using the d-scan retrieval algorithm. We compare the single-shot implementation with the standard d-scan for the measurement of sub-3.5-fs pulses from a hollow core fiber pulse compressor. We show that the retrieval algorithm used to extract amplitude and phase of the pulse provides comparable results, proving the validity of the new single-shot implementation down to near single-cycle durations., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We investigated the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stability of a hollow-fiber setup used for high-energy, few-cycle pulse generation. Saturation of the output pulse energy is observed at 0.6 mJ for a 260 um inner-diameter, 1 m long fiber, statically filled with neon, with the pressure adjusted to achieve an output spectrum capable of supporting sub-4fs pulses. The maximum output pulse energy can be increased to 0.8mJ by using either differential pumping, or circularly polarized input pulses. We observe the onset of an ionization-induced CEP instability, which does not increase beyond an input pulse energy of 1.25 mJ due to losses in the fiber caused by ionization. There is no significant difference in the CEP stability with differential pumping compared to static-fill, demonstrating that gas flow in differentially pumped fibers does not degrade the CEP stabilization., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report on the spatially resolved full amplitude and phase characterization of mid-infrared high intensity laser pulses generated in a three stage OPA. We use a spatially-encoded arrangement (SEA-)SPIDER with spectral filters for ancilla generation for spatially resolved characterization. Using five interchangeable filter sets we are able to characterize pulses from 1 to 2{\mu}m with one single device with minimal adjustments., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The phase space structure of certain quantum states reveals structure on a scale that is small compared to the Planck area. Using an analog between the wavefunction of a single photon and the electric field of a classical ultrashort optical pulse we show that spectral shearing interferometry enables measurement of such structures directly. Thereby extending the idea of Praxmeyer et al. In particular, we use multiple-shear spectral interferometry to fully characterize a pulse consisting of two sub-pulses which are temporally and spectrally disjoint, without a relative-phase ambiguity. This enables us to compute the Wigner distribution of the pulse. This spectrographic representation of the pulse field features fringes that are tilted with respect to both the time- and frequency axes, showing that in general the shortest sub-Planck distances may not be in the directions of the canonical (and easily experimentally accessible) directions. We report a new version of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER), which enables consistency checking through the simultaneous acquisition of multiple shears and offers a simple and precise calibration method. By mixing the test pulse with two spatially chirped ancilla fields we generate a single-shot interferogram which contains multiple shears, the spectral amplitude of the test pulse, and the reference phase, which is accurate for broadband pulses.
