Economic fish and aquaculture modelling is still at the beginning. The lack of a comprehensive and consistent data set for the production and trade of fish and other fishery products has restrained the modelling attempts so far. Here we show a methodology for filling the present data gaps and for overcoming existent inconsistencies to create a database that may support modelling of the fish sector, illustrated at the case of the fish module in the CAPRI model. We avoid double counting with respect to fishmeal and fish oil production and trade by disentangling the available data from key statistical sources relying on a minimization of normalized least squares. The presented data correction procedure and the resulting database may furthermore be of value for other models of global fish markets. The impact of the data correction procedure is demonstrated for the most relevant fish and fishery products producing and trading countries, comparing the resulting consolidated to the initial data.

In response to the environmental side effects of the increasing N losses from agriculture, especially during the period 1960-1990, series of environmental policies and measures has been implemented in the European Union (EU) from the early 1990s onwards. These policies and measures specifically aim at decreasing the emissions of NH3 to the atmosphere, the leaching of NO3 - to groundwater and surface waters, and the emissions of greenhouse gases, notably N2O, CH4 and CO2 to the atmosphere. Les stocks de capital en équipements et en bâtiments de la branche agricole sont estimés pour dix pays de l'Union européenne. L'originalité de ce travail est que les séries sont construites en utilisant la même méthodologie entre pays, ainsi que les mêmes lois et hypothèses. Les stocks productifs sont dérivés du flux d'investissement passé, moins les sorties et la perte d'efficacité (dépréciation physique). Les sorties sont calculées en utilisant une durée de vie moyenne et une distribution d'âge normale tronquée. La perte d'efficience est représentée par une fonction hyperbolique de l'âge des biens, concave vers l'origine. L'hypothèse d'une hyperbole rectangulaire paramètrée incorpore toutes les lois de dépréciation habituelles comme des cas particuliers. Les stocks productifs sont ceux qui doivent être utilisés dans la modélisation de la production. Ils ne doivent pas être confondus avec les stocks à leur valeur de remplacement, bien que des relations de dualité existent entre les deux. Des séries de stocks bruts, d'investissement, d'amortissement, et de stocks à la valeur de remplacement sont également disponibles.

This paper provides an assessment of the present state of applied modelling in the area of international trade in agriculture and related resource and environmental modelling. This review has a deliberate bias on current European policy issues. The outcomes of negotiation rounds such as World Trade Organization trade negotiations and the Kyoto environmental summit, and the prospect of EU enlargement bear implications for European farmers, related supplying and processing industries and European consumers. The assessment of likely policy impact is bound to be complex and should be supported by quantitative modelling analyses that explain the trade relations of European countries with third countries. We provide in this paper a comparative assessment of alternative modelling approaches. This includes theoretical modelling foundations, datasets employed and institutional aspects, such as model maintenance and dissemination of results. A typology of models is provided by structuring the assessment along a clear set of evaluation criteria.
