Introduction: Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is an inflammatory, primary scarring alopecia, however its pathogenesis is not completely elucidated. S100A7 is a multifunctional, antimicrobial protein with proinflammatory properties. Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is implicated in the development of various autoimmune skin diseases. Aim: To determine the tissue expression of S100A7, S100A4 and IL-17 in LPP Material and methods: The immunohistochemical analysis was performed on biopsy specimens obtained from individuals with histologically confirmed lichen planopilaris (n = 23), alopecia areata (AA) (n = 11), and healthy controls (n = 14). The expression was evaluated using Zeiss Axio Imager A2 light microscope. Results: The number of cells showing S100A7 expression was significantly higher in LPP lesional skin compared to AA lesional skin (p = 0.0002) and normal skin of healthy controls (p < 0.0001). The number of cells showing IL-17 expression was significantly higher in LPP lesional skin compared to normal skin of healthy controls (p < 0.0001) and the number of cells showing IL-17 expression was significantly higher in AA lesional skin compared to normal skin of healthy controls (p < 0.0001). The number of cells showing IL-17 expression was not significantly different in LPP lesional skin and in AA lesional skin (p > 0.05). The number of cells showing S100A4 expression was not significantly different in LPP lesional skin, AA lesional skin and in normal skin of healthy controls. Conclusions: The results of our study suggest the possible role of S100A7 and IL-17 in the pathogenesis of LPP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Sarcoidosis, characterized by non-caseating epithelioid granulomas, presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Method: Here we present a 38-year-old woman who exhibited erythematous and infiltrated skin lesions on her facial region following fractional laser treatment. Results: Histological analysis confirmed cutaneous sarcoidosis. Initial interventions with topical clobetasol and oral chloroquine provided transient relief. Subsequent outpatient management comprised topical tacrolimus and clobetasol, as well as systemic methotrexate, later substituted with prednisone. Gradual tapering resulted in lesion reduction. Conclusions: This case underscores the intricate nature of cutaneous sarcoidosis and the necessity for personalized therapeutic approaches. The association with cosmetic procedures highlights the importance of understanding potential triggers. The presented case highlights and reminds the medical community that lasers are not only used for therapeutic purposes but can also induce specific responses through laser therapy. Notably, while laser therapy is frequently employed in treating cutaneous sarcoidosis, its role in inducing sarcoidosis warrants further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) is a chronic progressive, lymphocyte-mediated inflammatory disease whose pathogenesis is complex and not fully elucidated. Aim: In the current study we have investigated for the first time the expression of interleukin-17 (IL-17) and S100A7 in lesional skin obtained from female individuals with histologically confirmed VLS. Material and methods: In our study we used skin biopsies obtained from female patients with histologically confirmed VLS (n = 20) and skin samples from healthy age- and gender-matched individuals (plastic surgery procedures) (n = 10) serving as controls. The tissue expressions of IL-17 and S100A7 were assessed with an immunohistochemical method. Results: The number of cells showing IL-17 expression was significantly higher in VLS lesional skin as compared to normal skin of healthy controls (p < 0.0001). In VLS lesional skin, IL-17 was expressed in the epidermis and by cells within the inflammatory infiltrate in the upper dermis. The number of cells showing S100A7 expression was significantly higher in VLS lesional skin as compared to normal skin of healthy controls (p < 0.0001). In VLS lesional skin, S100A7 was expressed by suprabasal keratinocytes in epidermis. S100A7 was also expressed by cells within the inflammatory infiltrate in the dermis. Conclusions: The results of our study may suggest the involvement of IL-17 and S100A7 in the pathogenesis of VLS. The better understanding of this disease may lead to the development of novel, effective therapeutic strategies e.g. using well-known biologics IL-17 inhibitors class. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a case study of a 59-year-old woman with severe atopic dermatitis (AD) since infancy and presented with fast-growing nodules on lower legs. She was diagnosed with CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorders such as primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (pc- ALCL) and lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP). The patient was treated with psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) and methotrexate.

A quiz concerning the symmetrical keratotic papules on the hands of a four-year old white male is presented.

The article discusses the case of a 77-year-old man in Poland who exhibited chronic tuberculosis (TB) luposa, or TB of the skin. It mentions that long, repeated isoniazid monotherapy failed to cure the patient's extensive skin lesions. A DNA amplification test was performed in order to rule out the possibility that vaccination may have caused a positive tuberculin skin test result. Combining isoniazid with other TB drugs to prevent drug resistance is also addressed.

A letter to the editor is presented in response to the article "Keratoacanthoma-like Cutaneous Metastasis of Lung Cancer: a Learning Point," that was published in the April 20, 2006 issue.

A 30-year-old male patient has been reported, who was admitted because of multiple, symmetric, confluent brownish papules localized primarily on the shoulders, and gradually extended to the arms, back and front of chest. Lesions developed over a period of 10 years and were accompanied by severe pruritus. Based on the clinical presentation and the results of histological examination, showing positive staining for amyloid, a lichen amyloidosus was diagnosed. Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome is a rare genetic, X-linked dominant disorder. Early changes appear in neonate period or even during pregnancy. There are four stages of skin lesions which appears one after another. Disorder affects not only a skin but also central nervous system, eyes, teeth, hair. IP generally affects females (>95% of cases), for males IP is mainly lethal. The name of the disease reflects morphological changes of the skin seen under a microscope: the migration of melanocytes from epidermis into the upper dermis. Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disorder of which the cause and pathogenesis are still unknown. Cutaneous lesions are present in about 25-50% of patients with systemic disease and may also arise in isolation. Because lesions can exhibit many different morphologies, cutaneous sarcoidosis is known as a 'great imitator' in dermatology. Lichenoid papules are one of the rare manifestations of cutaneous sarcoidosis and may be a challenge to make a correct diagnosis. The histologic examination is then essential. We report here two cases of the lichenoid type of cutaneous sarcoidosis, which were initially diagnosed as lichen planus and then the diagnosis was changed after receiving the results of histologic examinations.
