Hemipelagic green clayey shales and thin muddy turbidites accumulated in a deep sea environment below the CCD in the Skole Basin, a part of the Outer Carpathian realm, during the Middle Cenomanian. The hemipelagites contain numerous radiolarians, associated with deep-water agglutinated foraminifera. These sediments accumulated under mesotrophic conditions with limited oxygen concentration. Short-term periodic anoxia also occurred during that time. Muddy turbidity currents caused deposition of siliciclastic and biogenic material, including calcareous foramini-fers and numerous sponge spicules. The preservation and diversity of the spicules suggests that they originate from disarticulation of moderately diversified sponge assemblages, which lived predominantly in the neritic-bathyal zone. Analyses of radiolarian ecological groups and pellets reflect the water column properties during the sedimentation of green shales. At that time, surface and also intermediate waters were oxygenated enough and sufficiently rich in nutri-ents to enable plankton production. Numerous, uncompacted pellets with nearly pristine radiolarian skeletons inside show that pelletization was the main factor of radiolarian flux into the deep basin floor. Partly dissolved skeletons indicate that waters in the Skole Basin were undersaturated in relation to silica content. Oxygen content might have been depleted in the deeper part of the water column causing periodic anoxic conditions which prevent rapid bacterial degra-dation of the pellets during their fall to the sea floor.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most versatile semiconductor materials with many potential applications. Understanding the interactions between the surface chemistry of ZnO along with its physico-chemical properties are essential for the development of ZnO as a robust photocatalyst for the removal of aqueous pollutants. We report on the fabrication of nanoparticle-like porous ZnO films and the correlation between the fabrication process parameters, particle size, surface oxygen vacancies (SOV), photoluminescence and photocatalytic performance. The synthesis route is unique, as highly porous zinc layers with nanoscale grains were first grown via magnetron sputtering, a vacuum-based technique, and subsequently annealed at temperatures of 400 °C, 600 °C and 800 °C in oxygen flow to oxidise them to zinc oxide (ZnO) while maintaining their porosity. Our results show that as the annealing temperature increases, nanoparticle agglomeration increases, and thus there is a decrease in the active sites for the photocatalytic reaction. However, for selected samples the annealing leads to an increase of the photocatalytic efficiency, which we explain based on the analysis of defects in the material, based on photoluminescence (PL). PL analysis showed that in the material the transition between the conduction band and the oxygen vacancy is responsible for the green emission centered at 525 nm, but the photocatalytic activity correlated best with surface states—related emission.

BackgroundAtrial fibrillation (AF)-the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia-increases thromboembolic stroke risk 5-fold. Although atrial hypocontractility contributes to stroke risk in AF, the molecular mechanisms reducing myofilament contractile function remain unknown. We tested the hypothesis that increased expression of PPP1R12C (protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 12C)-the PP1 (protein phosphatase 1) regulatory subunit targeting MLC2a (atrial myosin light chain 2)-causes hypophosphorylation of MLC2a and results in atrial hypocontractility.MethodsRight atrial appendage tissues were isolated from human patients with AF versus sinus rhythm controls. Western blots, coimmunoprecipitation, and phosphorylation studies were performed to examine how the PP1c (PP1 catalytic subunit)-PPP1R12C interaction causes MLC2a dephosphorylation. In vitro studies of pharmacological MRCK (myotonic dystrophy kinase-related Cdc42-binding kinase) inhibitor (BDP5290) in atrial HL-1 cells were performed to evaluate PP1 holoenzyme activity on MLC2a. Cardiac-specific lentiviral PPP1R12C overexpression was performed in mice to evaluate atrial remodeling with atrial cell shortening assays, echocardiography, and AF inducibility with electrophysiology studies.ResultsIn human patients with AF, PPP1R12C expression was increased 2-fold versus sinus rhythm controls (P=2.0×10-2; n=12 and 12 in each group) with >40% reduction in MLC2a phosphorylation (P=1.4×10-6; n=12 and 12 in each group). PPP1R12C-PP1c binding and PPP1R12C-MLC2a binding were significantly increased in AF (P=2.9×10-2 and 6.7×10-3, respectively; n=8 and 8 in each group). In vitro studies utilizing drug BDP5290, which inhibits T560-PPP1R12C phosphorylation, demonstrated increased PPP1R12C binding with both PP1c and MLC2a and dephosphorylation of MLC2a. Mice treated with lentiviral PPP1R12C vector demonstrated a 150% increase in left atrial size versus controls (P=5.0×10-6; n=12, 8, and 12), with reduced atrial strain and atrial ejection fraction. Pacing-induced AF in mice treated with lentiviral PPP1R12C vector was significantly higher than in controls (P=1.8×10-2 and 4.1×10-2, respectively; n=6, 6, and 5).ConclusionsPatients with AF exhibit increased levels of PPP1R12C protein compared with controls. PPP1R12C overexpression in mice increases PP1c targeting to MLC2a and causes MLC2a dephosphorylation, which reduces atrial contractility and increases AF inducibility. These findings suggest that PP1 regulation of sarcomere function at MLC2a is a key determinant of atrial contractility in AF.

The aim of this study was to develop eye-drops with cefuroxime (CEF) sodium or vancomycin (VAN) hydrochloride, antibiotics that are instable in water. Anhydrous self-emulsifying oils (SEO) are proposed as a carrier and antibiotics are suspended. In the contact with tear fluid, the formulation should transform into emulsion, with fast dissolution of an antibiotic. CEF or VAN (5% w/w) was suspended in SEO carriers prepared by dissolving surfactants (Tween 20 or Span 80 5% w/w) in Miglyol, castor oil, or olive oil. Formulations with or without sodium citrate (2% w/w) were compared. Six-months or 1-year stability tests were carried out at 40 °C. The content of CEF and VAN was evaluated using HPLC and the potency of the antibiotic was assessed with agar diffusion method. In contact with water, drug particles suspended in SEO dissolved rapidly and o/w emulsion was formed. After 1-year at 40 °C, the content of degradation products was at most 0.5% in CEF and 4.0% in VAN formulations. The agar diffusion assay has shown that CEF and VAN loaded into SEO retained its potency against the sensitive microorganisms comparable to an aqueous solution. Therefore, SEO can be used as a novel carrier for the active substances which may not require improved solubility or absorption but need to be protected from moisture. This is a formulation that can be produced on industrial scale, with no limitation of stability or drug concentration.

This paper presents an investigation into the influence of repeating cycles of hydrothermal growth processes and rapid thermal annealing (HT+RTA) on the properties of CuO thin films. An innovative hydrothermal method ensures homogeneous single-phase films initially. However, their electrical instability and susceptibility to cracking under the influence of temperature have posed a challenge to their utilization in electronic devices. To address this limitation, the HT+RTA procedure has been developed, which effectively eliminated the issue. Comprehensive surface analysis confirmed the procedure’s ability to yield continuous films in which the content of organic compounds responsible for the formation of cracks significantly decreases. Structural analysis underscored the achieved improvements in the crystalline quality of the films. The implementation of the HT+RTA procedure significantly enhances the potential of CuO films for electronic applications. Key findings from Kelvin probe force microscopy analysis demonstrate the possibility of modulating the work function of the material. In addition, scanning capacitance microscopy measurements provided information on the changes in the local carrier concentration with each repetition. These studies indicate the increased usefulness of CuO thin films obtained from the HT+RTA procedure, which expands the possibilities of their applications in electronic devices.

BackgroundThe triglyceride (TG) content of low-density lipoprotein (LDL-TG) has been shown to be more predictive of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events than the cholesterol content of LDL (LDL-C). The goal of our study was to develop an equation for estimating LDL-TG (eLDL-TG) based on the standard lipid panel and to compare it to estimated LDL-C as an ASCVD risk biomarker.MethodsUsing least-square regression analysis, the following eLDL-TG equation was developed: eLDL-TG=TG38.5+NonHDL-C5.75+9.75TGNonHDL-C+244HDL-C−2.95. LDL-TG was measured by the β-quantification (BQ) reference method (N = 40,202). LDL-C was calculated by the Sampson-NIH equation. The association of LDL-C and eLDL-TG with ASCVD risk markers was performed in the National Heart and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (N = 37,053) and with ASCVD events in a primary prevention cohort from the UK Biobank (UKB) (N = 429,367) and the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study (N = 14,632).ResultseLDL-TG showed better ASCVD risk stratification of UKB participants than LDL-C (Wilcoxon Chi-Square: 2,099.6 vs. 418.7, respectively). Receiving-operating characteristics analysis revealed that eLDL-TG had a stronger association with ASCVD events than LDL-C (AUC: 0.596 vs. 0.542, respectively) and other conventional lipid markers. Similar findings were found in ARIC. Discordance analysis in UKB showed that the group with low LDL-C/high eLDL-TG had a similar risk as the high LDL-C/high eLDL-TG group. Furthermore, these same two groups with the highest eLDL-TG levels and the highest ASCVD event rate also had higher mean levels of systolic blood pressure, Body Mass Index, hemoglobin A1C, and C-reactive protein than the two lower eLDL-TG groups. Using eLDL-TG > 44.6 mg/dl (80th percentile) as a cut-point leads to a hazard ratio of 1.32 (95% CI, 1.29–1.36) for ASCVD events, which remained significant after adjustment for LDL-C and apoB. Furthemore, using eLDL-TG as a risk-enhancer test leads to reclassification of 50% more high-risk individuals than current lipid-enhancer test rules.ConclusionsLike LDL-C, LDL-TG can also be calculated from the results of the standard lipid panel. Compared to estimated LDL-C, eLDL-TG was a better risk marker for primary prevention and hence could improve initial ASCVD risk stratification.

Lipid disorders are the most common (even 70%) and worst monitored cardiovascular risk factor (only 1/4 of patients in Poland and in CEE countries are on the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goal). To improve this, clear and simple diagnostic criteria should be introduced for all components of the lipid profile. These are the updated guidelines of the two main scientific societies in Poland in the area – the Polish Society of Laboratory Diagnostics (PSLD) and the Polish Lipid Association (PoLA), which, in comparison to those from 2020, introduce few important changes in recommendations (two main lipid targets, new recommendations on LDL-C measurements, calculations new goals for triglycerides, new recommendations on remnants and small dense LDL) that should help the practitioners to be early with the diagnosis of lipid disorders and in the effective monitoring (after therapy initiation), and in the consequence to avoid the first and recurrent cardiovascular events.

Enhancing plant productivity and mitigating the impact of environmental stressors require a thorough understanding of phytomonitoring and physiological features indicative of plant health. This study delves into the response of cucumber plants to phosphorus deficiency employing diverse tools to identify key indicators and unravel the underlying mechanisms. Under phosphorus deficiency, a rapid response in older leaves was observed through the analysis of chlorophyll and carotenoid content. Molecular-level changes in photosynthetic performance were found to be age-dependent, as revealed by multidimensional statistical methods, highlighting the interconnectedness of examined features with the experimental setup timing. This can assist in understanding the long-term fluctuations in traits linked to phosphorus deficiency, facilitating early detection of stress.

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is an infrastructure-managing methodology that leads to improvements in production efficiency, quality, and safety. It includes a set of processes, techniques, and strategies based on forecasting, maintenance, the optimized cooperation of different company departments, and the minimization of costs related to downtime or accidents caused by equipment failure. This article discusses the history, assumptions of the TPM concept, and approach to implementing Total Productive Maintenance in organizations in detail. The right ingredients required for successful TPM implementation and barriers to implementation are also reviewed. The benefits of implementing TPM in organizations are presented and supported with examples of implementations in production and non-production organizations. The article is addressed to representatives of the manufacturing industry. TPM also indicates a high potential for implementation in non-production areas, which may be interesting, for example, for the service, medical, or laboratory industries.

W Polsce zadania państwowej służby geologicznej pełni Państwowy Instytut Geologiczny – Państwowy Instytut Badawczy, który ma formę organizacyjnoprawną instytutu badawczego. Ma on odrębność organizacyjną i finansową, która umożliwia prowadzenie badań naukowych i prac rozwojowych. Wykonywanie zadań państwowej służby geologicznej stanowi zatem jeden z elementów działalności tego instytutu. Forma organizacyjnoprawna państwowej służby geologicznej może różnić się w zależności od sposobu prowadzenia polityki surowcowej państwa, systemu prawnego oraz struktury państwa. Państwowe służby geologiczne mogą podlegać różnym ministerstwom i realizować zadania związane ze służbą geologiczną na kilku poziomach (krajowym, regionalnym). W niniejszej publikacji przedstawione zostały wybrane modele instytucjonalne państwowych służb geologicznych kilku państw, w tym państw członkowskich Unii Europejskiej. Ich analiza pozwoli na wykazanie zróżnicowanych form organizacyjnoprawnych państwowych służb geologicznych oraz udzielenie odpowiedzi, czy państwowe służby geologiczne realizują wyłącznie tradycyjne zadania z zakresu geologii, czy też szerszy katalog zadań państwa.

Two new Ag(I) complexes with coumaric carboxylic acid derivatives have been synthesized. Structural studies of these noncrystalline complexes have been performed using a methodology that combines laboratory and synchrotron techniques, supported by density functional theory calculations. The arrangement of ligands around the Ag(I) cation has been refined using infrared, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopies. Different coordination modes of carboxylate ligands are observed for the studied compounds. Carboxylate bridges are characteristic for the Ag(I) complex with 4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran-2-carboxylic acid (1), while a bidentate chelating motif was found for the complex with 2-oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-3-carboxylic acid (2). Additionally, the carbonyl oxygen atom of the coumarin ring coordinates to the silver cation in complex 2, while it is inactive in complex 1. Antimicrobial evaluation has been performed for both compounds. The complexes show activity against selected bacteria as well as Candida yeast. This activity is slightly lower for bacteria and the same or higher for Candida in relation to the reference substances: ciprofloxacin or fluconazole.

In psychological science, replicability—repeating a study with a new sample achieving consistent results (Parsons et al., 2022)—is critical for affirming the validity of scientific findings. Despite its importance, replication efforts are few and far between in psychological science with many attempts failing to corroborate past findings. This scarcity, compounded by the difficulty in accessing replication data, jeopardizes the efficient allocation of research resources and impedes scientific advancement. Addressing this crucial gap, we present the Replication Database (https://forrt-replications.shinyapps.io/fred_explorer), a novel platform hosting 1,239 original findings paired with replication findings. The infrastructure of this database allows researchers to submit, access, and engage with replication findings. The database makes replications visible, easily findable via a graphical user interface, and tracks replication rates across various factors, such as publication year or journal. This will facilitate future efforts to evaluate the robustness of psychological research.
