Context: The details of the mass-loss process in the late stages of low- and intermediate-mass stellar evolution are not well understood, in particular its dependence on stellar parameters. Mira variables are highly suitable targets for studying this mass-loss process. Aims: We follow up on our earlier finding that a near-to-mid-infrared colour vs. pulsation period diagram shows two sequences of Miras that can be distinguished by the third dredge-up (3DUP) indicator technetium in those stars. While IR colours are good indicators of the dust mass-loss rate (MLR) from Miras, no corresponding sequences have been found using the gas MLR. However, investigations of the gas MLR have been hampered by data limitations. We aim to alleviate these limitations with new observational data. Methods: We present new optical spectra of a well-selected sample of Miras. We searched these spectra for absorption lines of Tc and other 3DUP indicators and combined our findings with gas MLRs and expansion velocities from the literature. Furthermore, we analyse WISE MIR data and compare the broadband SEDs of Miras with and without Tc. Results: We find no systematic difference in gas MLRs between Miras with and without Tc. However, the gas envelopes of Tc-poor Miras appear to have a higher expansion velocity than those of Miras with Tc. Furthermore, our analysis of the IR photometry strongly corroborates the earlier finding that Tc-poor Miras have a higher MIR emission than Tc-rich ones, by as much as a factor of two. We model the IR colours with DARWIN and stationary wind models and conclude that Miras with and without Tc have different dust content or properties. Conclusions: We discuss several hypotheses of the observations and conclude that the reduction of free oxygen by 3DUP of carbon and iron-depleted dust grains in Tc-rich stars are the most convincing explanations for our observations., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present the results of time-resolved high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the very active RS Canum Venaticorum (RS CVn) star SZ Piscium (SZ Psc), obtained during two consecutive observing nights on October 24 and 25, 2011. Several optical chromospheric activity indicators are analyzed using the spectral subtraction technique, which show the remarkably different behavior between two nights. Gradually blue-shifted and strengthened excess absorption features presented in the series of the subtracted spectra (especially for the H$_{\alpha}$, He I D$_{3}$ and H$_{\beta}$ lines), as a result of active stellar prominence that is rising its height along the line of our sight, was detected in the observations on October 24. This prominence activation event was probably associated with the subsequently occurred optical flare, and part of that flare decay phase was hunted in the observations on October 25. The flare was characterized by the prominent He I D$_{3}$ line emission, as well as stronger chromospheric emission in the H$_{\alpha}$, H$_{\beta}$ and other active lines. The gradual decay of flare was accompanied by an obviously developmental absorption feature in the blue wing of the H$_{\alpha}$ and other active lines, which could be explained as cool post-flare loops which projected against the bright flare background. Therefore, a series of possibly associated magnetic activity phenomena, including flare-related prominence activation, optical flare and post-flare loops, were detected during our observations.

We present a study of high-resolution spectra of RS Canum Venaticorum (RS CVn), a prototype of active binary systems. Our data were obtained from 1998 to 2017 using different telescopes. We analyze the chromospheric activity indicators Ca II IRT, H$_{\alpha}$, Na I D$_{1}$, D$_{2}$ doublet, He I D$_{3}$, and H$_{\beta}$ using a spectral subtraction technique. The chromospheric emission stems mainly from the K2 IV primary star, while the F5 V secondary star only shows weak emission features in a few of our spectra. We find excess absorption features in the subtracted H$_{\alpha}$ lines and other activity indicators from spectra taken near primary eclipse, which we ascribe to prominence-like material associated with the primary star. We estimate size limits of these tentative prominences based on the geometry of the binary system, and investigate the physical properties of the strongest prominence. An optical flare, characterized by He I D$_{3}$ line emission, together with stronger emission in other activity lines, was detected. The flare energy is roughly comparable to strong flares observed on other RS CVn-type stars. The chromospherically active longitudes of RS CVn most frequently appear near the two quadratures of the system and display changes between observing runs, which indicates an ongoing evolution of its active regions.

We present new spectroscopic observations of the Be/black hole binary MWC 656 obtained during the period 2015 - 2021. We measure the equivalent width of H$\alpha$ (EW$_\alpha$), H$\beta$ ($EW_\beta$), and the distance between the peaks of H$\alpha$ ($\Delta V_\alpha$), H$\beta$ ($\Delta V_\beta$), and FeII ($\Delta V_{FeII}$) lines. Combining new and old data, we find that: - the density of the circumstellar disc of MWC 656 ($\Delta V_\alpha$ versus $EW_\alpha$ diagram) is similar to the Be stars. For the Be stars we find the relation $\Delta V_\beta = 0.999 \Delta V_\alpha + 62.4$ km s$^{-1}$, and the position of MWC~656 corresponds to the average behaviour of the Be stars. This means that the presence of the black hole does not change the overall structure of the circumstellar disc. - the periodogram analysis indicates modulation of $EW_\alpha$ with a period $60.4 \pm 0.4$ days, which is identical to the binary orbital period. The maxima of $EW_\alpha$ and $EW_\beta$ are around periastron (phase zero). - around orbital phase zero, $\Delta V_\beta$ and $\Delta V_{FeII}$ decrease by about $30$ km s$^{-1}$. This suggests that we observe an increase of the circumstellar disc size induced by the periastron passage of the black hole and that the entire circumstellar disc pulsates with the orbital period with relative amplitude of 10-20%. The observations also indicate, that the reason for the black hole in MWC 656 to be in deep quiescence is a very low efficiency of accretion ($\sim 2 \times 10^{-6}$)., Comment: Accepted by Astronomische Nachrichten / Astronomical Notes

Cool main-sequence stars, such as the Sun, have magnetic fields which are generated by an internal dynamo mechanism. In the Sun, the dynamo mechanism produces a balance between the amounts of magnetic flux generated and lost over the Sun's 11-year activity cycle and it is visible in the Sun's different atmospheric layers using multi-wavelength observations. We used the same observational diagnostics, spanning several decades, to probe the emergence of magnetic flux on the two close by, active- and low-mass K dwarfs: 61 Cygni A and Epsilon Eridani. Our results show that 61 Cygni A follows the Solar dynamo with a regular cycle at all wavelengths, while Epsilon Eridani represents a more extreme level of the Solar dynamo, while also showing strong Solar-like characteristics. For the first time we show magnetic butterfly diagrams for stars other than the Sun. For the two K stars and the Sun, the rate at which the toroidal field is generated from surface poloidal field is similar to the rate at which toroidal flux is lost through flux emergence. This suggests that the surface field plays a crucial role in the dynamos of all three stars. In 2015 we started the XMM-Newton monitoring of the young solar-like star Epsilon Eridani (440 Myr), one of the youngest solar-like stars with a known chromospheric CaII cycle. By analyzing the most recent Mount Wilson S-index CaII data of this star, we found that the chromospheric cycle lasts 2.92 +/- 0.02 yr, in agreement with past results. From the long-term X-ray lightcurve, we find clear and systematic X-ray variability of our target, consistent with the chromospheric CaII cycle. The average X-ray luminosity results to be 2 x 10^28 erg/s, with an amplitude that is only a factor 2 throughout the cycle. We apply a new method to describe the evolution of the coronal emission measure distribution of Epsilon Eridani in terms of solar magnetic structures: active regions, cores of active regions and flares covering the stellar surface at varying filling fractions. Combinations of these magnetic structures can describe the observed X-ray emission measure of Epsilon Eridani only if the solar flare emission measure distribution is restricted to events in the decay phase. The interpretation is that flares in the corona of Epsilon Eridani last longer than their solar counterparts. We ascribe this to the lower metallicity of Epsilon Eridani. Our analysis revealed also that the X-ray cycle of Epsilon Eridani is strongly dominated by cores of active regions. The coverage fraction of cores throughout the cycle changes by the same factor as the X-ray luminosity. The maxima of the cycle are characterized by a high percentage of covering fraction of the flares, consistent with the fact that flaring events are seen in the corresponding short-term X-ray lightcurves predominately at the cycle maxima. The high X-ray emission throughout the cycle of Epsilon Eridani is thus explained by the high percentage of magnetic structures on its surface., Comment: 21 pages, 27 figures, 2 tables. We present the first Doppler images of the prototypical active binary star RS CVn, derived from high-resolution spectra observed in 2004, 2016 and 2017, using three different telescopes and observing sites. We apply the least-squares deconvolution technique to all observed spectra to obtain high signal-to-noise line profiles, which are used to derive the surface images of the active K-type component. Our images show a complex spot pattern on the K star, distributed widely in longitude. All starspots revealed by our Doppler images are located below a latitude of about 70$^{\circ}$. In accordance with previous light-curve modeling studies, we find no indication of a polar spot on the K star. Using Doppler images derived from two consecutive rotational cycles, we estimate a surface differential rotation rate of $\Delta\Omega = -0.039 \pm 0.003 ~rad~d^{-1}$ and $\alpha = \Delta\Omega/\Omega_{eq} = -0.030 \pm 0.002$ for the K star. We present spectroscopic observations of the Be/X-ray binary X Per obtained during the period December 2017 - January 2020 (MJD~58095 - MJD~58865). In December 2017 the $H\alpha$, $H\beta$, and HeI 6678 emission lines were symmetric with violet-to-red peak ratio $V/R \approx 1$. During the first part of the period (December 2017 - August 2018) the V/R-ratio decreased to 0.5 and the asymmetry developed simultaneously in all three lines. In September 2018, a third component with velocity $\approx 250$~km~s$^{-1}$ appeared on the red side of the HeI line profile. Later this component emerged in $H\beta$, accompanied by the appearance of a red shoulder in $H\alpha$. Assuming that it is due to an eccentric wave in the circumstellar disc, we find that the eccentric wave appeared first in the innermost part of the disc, it spreads out with outflowing velocity $v_{wave} \approx 1.1 \pm 0.2 $~km~s$^{-1}$, and the eccentricity of the eccentric wave is $e_{wave} \approx 0.29 \pm 0.07$. We report photometric observations in Johnson UBV bands of the short term variability of Mira. The amplitude detected is 0.16 mag in B band. Adopting interstellar extinction E(B-V)=0, we find for the flickering source colour B-V=1.3, temperature T=3700 K, and radius R=0.77 Rsun. We present spectroscopic observations of the Be/X-ray binary X Per obtained during the period 1999 - 2018. Using new and published data, we found that during "disc-rise" the expansion velocity of the circumstellar disc is 0.4 - 0.7 km/s. Our results suggest that the disc radius in recent decades show evidence of resonant truncation of the disc by resonances 10:1, 3:1, and 2:1, while the maximum disc size is larger than the Roche lobe of the primary and smaller than the closest approach of the neutron star. We find correlation between equivalent width of H-alpha emission line ($W\alpha$) and the X-ray flux, which is visible when $15 \: \AA \: < W\alpha \le 40 \: \AA$. Thorium hollow cathode lamps (HCLs) are used as frequency calibrators for many high resolution astronomical spectrographs, some of which aim for Doppler precision at the 1 m/s level. We aim to determine the most suitable combination of elements (Th or U, Ar or Ne) for wavelength calibration of astronomical spectrographs, to characterize differences between similar HCLs, and to provide a new U line-list. We record high resolution spectra of different HCLs using a Fourier transform spectrograph: (i) U-Ne, U-Ar, Th-Ne, and Th-Ar lamps in the spectral range from 500 to 1000 nm and U-Ne and U-Ar from 1000 to 1700 nm; (ii) we systematically compare the number of emission lines and the line intensity ratio for a set of 12 U-Ne HCLs; and (iii) we record a master spectrum of U-Ne to create a new U line-list. Uranium lamps show more lines suitable for calibration than Th lamps from 500 to 1000 nm. The filling gas of the lamps significantly affects their performance because Ar and Ne lines contaminate different spectral regions. We find differences (up to 88 %) in the line intensity of U lines in different lamps from the same batch. We find 8239 isolated lines between 500 and 1700 nm that we attribute to U, 3379 of which were not contained in earlier line-lists. We suggest using a combination of U-Ne and U-Ar lamps to wavelength-calibrate astronomical spectrographs up to 1000 nm. From 1000 to 1700 nm, U-Ne shows better properties. The differences in line strength between different HCLs underline the importance of characterizing HCLs in the laboratory. HD 189733 is an exoplanetary system consisting of a transiting hot Jupiter and an active K2V-type main sequence star. We aim to use VLT/UVES high resolution echelle spectra to study a stellar flare. We have performed simultaneous analyses of the temporal evolution in several chromospheric stellar lines, namely, the Ca II H and K lines, Halpha, Hbeta, Hgamma, Hdelta, Hepsilon, the Ca II infrared triplet line, and He I D3. Observations were carried out with a time resolution of approximately 1 min for a duration of four hours, including a complete planetary transit. We determine the energy released during the flare in all studied chromospheric lines combined to be about 8.7e31 erg, which puts this event at the upper end of flare energies observed on the Sun. Our analysis does not reveal any significant delay of the flare peak observed in the Balmer and Ca II H and K lines, although we find a clear difference in the temporal evolution of these lines. The He I D3 shows additional absorption possibly related to the flare event. Based on the flux released in Ca II H and K lines during the flare, we estimate the soft X-ray flux emission to be 7e30 erg. The observed flare can be ranked as a moderate flare on a K-type star and confirms a rather high activity level of HD 189733 host star. The cores of the studied chromospheric lines demonstrate the same behavior and let us study the flare evolution. We demonstrate that the activity of an exoplanet host star can play an important role in the detection of exoplanet atmospheres, since these are frequently discovered as an additional absorption in the line cores. We present results of our dense spectroscopic monitoring of Nova V5668 Sgr. Starting on March 19 in 2015, only a few days after discovery, we have obtained a series of spectra with the TIGRE telescope and its HEROS echelle spectrograph which offers a resolution of R = 20,000 and covers the optical wavelength range from 3800 to 8800 {\AA}. We performed a line identification of the discernible features for four spectra which are representative for the respective phases in the light curve evolution of that nova. By simultaneously analysing the variations in the visual light curve and the corresponding spectra of Nova V5668 Sgr, we found that during the declining phases of the nova the absorption features in all hydrogen and many other lines had shifted to higher expansion velocities of -2000 km s^-1. Conversely, during the rise towards the following maximum, these observed absorption features had returned to lower expansion velocities.We found that the absorption features of some Fe II lines displayed the same behaviour, but in addition disappeared for a few days during some declining phases. Features of several N I lines also disappeared while new N II lines appeared in emission for a few days during some of the declining phases of the light curve of Nova V5668 Sgr. The center-to-limb variation (CLV) describes the brightness of the stellar disk as a function of the limb angle. Across strong absorption lines, the CLV can vary quite significantly. We obtained a densely sampled time series of high-resolution transit spectra of the active planet host star HD 189733 with UVES. Using the passing planetary disk of the hot Jupiter HD 189733 b as a probe, we study the CLV in the wings of the Ca II H and K and Na I D1 and D2 Fraunhofer lines, which are not strongly affected by activity-induced variability. In agreement with model predictions, our analysis shows that the wings of the studied Fraunhofer lines are limb brightened with respect to the (quasi-)continuum. The strength of the CLV-induced effect can be on the same order as signals found for hot Jupiter atmospheres. Therefore, a careful treatment of the wavelength dependence of the stellar CLV in strong absorption lines is highly relevant in the interpretation of planetary transit spectroscopy., Comment: Accepted in A&A

The Kepler mission has led to the serendipitous discovery of a significant number of `super flares' - white light flares with energies between 10^33 erg and 10^36 erg - on solar-type stars. It has been speculated that these could be `freak' events that might happen on the Sun, too. We have started a programme to study the nature of the stars on which these super flares have been observed. Here we present high-resolution spectroscopy of 11 of these stars and discuss our results. We find that several of these stars are very young, fast-rotating stars where high levels of stellar activity can be expected, but for some other stars we do not find a straightforward explanation for the occurrence of super flares., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 9 pages, 4 figures

To date, WASP-33 is the only delta Scuti star known to be orbited by a hot Jupiter. The pronounced stellar pulsations, showing periods comparable to the primary transit duration, interfere with the transit modeling. Therefore our main goal is to study the pulsation spectrum of the host star to redetermine the orbital parameters of the system by means of pulsation-cleaned primary transit light curves. Between August 2010 and October 2012 we obtained 457 hours of photometry of WASP-33 using small and middle-class telescopes located mostly in Spain and in Germany. Our observations comprise the wavelength range between the blue and the red, and provide full phase coverage of the planetary orbit. After a careful detrend, we focus our pulsation studies in the high frequency regime, where the pulsations that mostly deform the primary transit exist. The data allow us to identify, for the first time in the system, eight significant pulsation frequencies. The pulsations are likely associated with low-order p-modes. Furthermore, we find that pulsation phases evolve in time. We use our knowledge of the pulsations to clean the primary transit light curves and carry out an improved transit modeling. Surprisingly, taking into account the pulsations in the modeling has little influence on the derived orbital parameters. However, the uncertainties in the best-fit parameters decrease. Additionally, we find indications for a possible dependence between wavelength and transit depth, but only with marginal significance. A clear pulsation solution, in combination with an accurate orbital period, allows us to extend our studies and search for star-planet interactions (SPI). Although we find no conclusive evidence of SPI, we believe that the pulsation nature of the host star and the proximity between members make WASP-33 a promising system for further SPI studies., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, paper accepted

We study the chromosphere and corona of the ultra-fast rotator AB Dor A at high temporal and spectral resolution using simultaneous observations with XMM-Newton in the X-rays, VLT/UVES in the optical, and the ATCA in the radio. Our optical spectra have a resolving power of ~50 000 with a time cadence of ~1 min. Our observations continuously cover more than one rotational period and include both quiescent periods and three flaring events of different strengths. From the X-ray observations we investigated the variations in coronal temperature, emission measure, densities, and abundance. We interpreted our data in terms of a loop model. From the optical data we characterise the flaring chromospheric material using numerous emission lines that appear in the course of the flares. A detailed analysis of the line shapes and line centres allowed us to infer physical characteristics of the flaring chromosphere and to coarsely localise the flare event on the star. We specifically used the optical high-cadence spectra to demonstrate that both, turbulent and Stark broadening are present during the first ten minutes of the first flare. Also, in the first few minutes of this flare, we find short-lived (one to several minutes) emission subcomponents in the H{\alpha} and Ca ii K lines, which we interpret as flare-connected shocks owing to their high intrinsic velocities. Combining the space-based data with the results of our optical spectroscopy, we derive flare-filling factors. Finally, comparing X-ray, optical broadband, and line emission, we find a correlation for two of the three flaring events, while there is no clear correlation for one event. Also, we do not find any correlation of the radio data to any other observed data.

Young T Tauri stars (TTS) are surrounded by an accretion disk, which over time disperses due to photoevaporation, accretion, and possibly planet formation. The accretion shock on the central star produces an UV/optical veiling continuum, line emission, and X-ray signatures. As the accretion rate decreases, the impact on the central star must change. In this article we study MN Lup, a young star where no indications of a disk are seen in IR observations. We present XMM-Newton and VLT/UVES observations, some of them taken simultaneously. The X-ray data show that MN Lup is an active star with L_X/L_bol close to the saturation limit. However, we find high densities (n_e > 3e10 /cm^3) in the X-ray grating spectrum. This can be well fitted using an accretion shock model with an accretion rate of 2e-11 M_sun/yr. Despite the simple Halpha line profile which has a broad component, but no absorption signatures as typically seen on accreting TTS, we find rotational modulation in Ca II K and in photospheric absorption lines. In the Halpha line we see a prominence in absorption about 2R_* above the stellar surface - the first of its kind on a TTS. MN Lup is also the only TTS where accretion is seen, but no dust disk is detected that could fuel it. We suggest that MN Lup presents a unique and short-lived state in the disk evolution. CoRoT-2 is one of the most unusual planetary systems known to date. Its host star is exceptionally active, showing a pronounced, regular pattern of optical variability caused by magnetic activity. The transiting hot Jupiter, CoRoT-2b, shows one of the largest known radius anomalies. We analyze the properties and activity of CoRoT-2A in the optical and X-ray regime by means of a high-quality UVES spectrum and a 15 ks Chandra exposure both obtained during planetary transits. The UVES data are analyzed using various complementary methods of high-resolution stellar spectroscopy. We characterize the photosphere of the host star by deriving accurate stellar parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity, and abundances. Signatures of stellar activity, Li abundance, and interstellar absorption are investigated to provide constraints on the age and distance of CoRoT-2. Furthermore, our UVES data confirm the presence of a late-type stellar companion to CoRoT-2A that is gravitationally bound to the system. The Chandra data provide a clear detection of coronal X-ray emission from CoRoT-2A, for which we obtain an X-ray luminosity of 1.9e29 erg/s. The potential stellar companion remains undetected in X-rays. Our results indicate that the distance to the CoRoT-2 system is approximately 270 pc, and the most likely age lies between 100 and 300 Ma. Our X-ray observations show that the planet is immersed in an intense field of high-energy radiation. Surprisingly, CoRoT-2A's likely coeval stellar companion, which we find to be of late-K spectral type, remains X-ray dark. Yet, as a potential third body in the system, the companion could account for CoRoT-2b's slightly eccentric orbit., Comment: accepted for publication by A&A

The lightcurve of CoRoT-2 shows substantial rotational modulation and deformations of the planet's transit profiles caused by starspots. We consistently model the entire lightcurve, including both rotational modulation and transits, stretching over approximately 30 stellar rotations and 79 transits. The spot distribution and its evolution on the noneclipsed and eclipsed surface sections are presented and analyzed, making use of the high resolution achievable under the transit path. We measure the average surface brightness on the eclipsed section to be (5\pm1) % lower than on the noneclipsed section. Adopting a solar spot contrast, the spot coverage on the entire surface reaches up to 19 % and a maximum of almost 40 % on the eclipsed section. Features under the transit path, i.e. close to the equator, rotate with a period close to 4.55 days. Significantly higher rotation periods are found for features on the noneclipsed section indicating a differential rotation of $\Delta \Omega > 0.1$. We analyze the surface structure of the planet host star CoRoT-2a using a consistent model for both the `global' (i.e., rotationally modulated) lightcurve and the transit lightcurves, using data provided by the CoRoT mission. Selecting a time interval covering two stellar rotations and six transits of the planetary companion CoRoT-2b, we adopt a `strip' model of the surface to reproduce the photometric modulation inside and outside the transits simultaneously. Our reconstructions show that it is possible to achieve appropriate fits for the entire sub-interval using a low-resolution surface model with 36 strips. The surface reconstructions indicate that the brightness on the eclipsed section of the stellar surface is (6 +/- 1) % lower than the average brightness of the remaining surface. This result suggests a concentration of stellar activity in a band around the stellar equator similar to the behavior observed on the Sun., Comment: accepted by A&A on 12/09/2009

We analyze variations in the transit lightcurves of CoRoT-2b, a massive hot Jupiter orbiting a highly active G star. We use one transit lightcurve to eclipse-map a photospheric spot occulted by the planet. In this case study we determine the size and longitude of the eclipsed portion of the starspot and systematically study the corresponding uncertainties. We determine a spot radius between $4.5\degr$ and $10.5\degr$ on the stellar surface and the spot longitude with a precision of about $\pm 1$ degree. Given the well-known transit geometry of the CoRoT-2 system, this implies a reliable detection of spots on latitudes typically covered by sunspots; also regarding its size the modelled spot is comparable to large spot groups on the Sun. Lightcurves have long been used to study stellar activity and have more recently become a major tool in the field of exoplanet research. We discuss the various ways in which stellar activity can influence transit lightcurves, and study the effects using the outstanding photometric data of the CoRoT-2 exoplanet system. We report a relation between the `global' lightcurve and the transit profiles which turn out to be shallower during high spot coverage on the stellar surface. Furthermore, our analysis reveals a color dependence of the transit lightcurve compatible with a wavelength-dependent limb darkening law as observed on the Sun. Taking into account activity-related effects, we re-determine the orbit inclination and planetary radius and find the planet to be approximately 3% larger than reported previously. The young active G-dwarf star V889 Herculis (HD 171488) shows pronounced spots in Doppler images as well as large variations in photometry and radial velocity (RV) measurements. However, the lifetime and evolution of its active regions are not well known. We study the existence and stability of active regions on the star's surface using complementary data and methods. Furthermore, we analyze the correlation of spot-induced RV variations and Doppler images. Photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy are used to examine stellar activity. A CLEAN-like Doppler Imaging (DI) algorithm is used to derive surface reconstructions. We study high-precision RV curves to determine their modulation due to stellar activity in analogy to the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. To this end we develop a measure for the shift of a line's center and compare it to RV measurements. We show that large spotted regions exist on V889 Her for more than one year remaining similar in their large scale structure and position. This applies to several time periods of our observations, which cover more than a decade. Furthermore we use DI line profile reconstructions to identify influences of long-lasting starspots on RV measurements. In this way we verify the RV curve's agreement with our Doppler images. We present simultaneous high-temporal and high-spectral resolution observations at optical and soft X-ray wavelengths of the nearby flare star CN Leo. During our observing campaign a major flare occurred, raising the star's instantaneous energy output by almost three orders of magnitude. The flare shows the often observed impulsive behavior, with a rapid rise and slow decay in the optical and a broad soft X-ray maximum about 200 seconds after the optical flare peak. However, in addition to this usually encountered flare phenomenology we find an extremely short (~2 sec) soft X-ray peak, which is very likely of thermal, rather than non-thermal nature and temporally coincides with the optical flare peak. While at hard X-ray energies non-thermal bursts are routinely observed on the Sun at flare onset, thermal soft X-ray bursts on time scales of seconds have never been observed in a solar nor stellar context. Time-dependent, one-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling of this event requires an extremely short energy deposition time scale of a few seconds to reconcile theory with observations, thus suggesting that we are witnessing the results of a coronal explosion on CN Leo. Thus the flare on CN Leo provides the opportunity to observationally study the physics of the long-sought "micro-flares" thought to be responsible for coronal heating., Comment: 7 pages, accepted by A&A

We present an analysis of contemporaneous photospheric, chromospheric and coronal structures on the highly active K-dwarf star BO Mic (Speedy Mic). We localize a moderate flare in the stellar atmosphere and study its energetics, size and thermal behaviour. The analysis is based on strictly simultaneous X-ray, UV- and optical observations carried out by XMM-Newton and the VLT. We use Doppler imaging and related methods for the localization of features. Based on X-ray spectroscopy we study the the coronal plasma in and outside the flare. The flare emits in X-rays and UV, but is not detected in white light; it is located at intermediate latitude between an extended spot group and the weakly spotted pole. We estimate its height below 0.4 stellar radii making it clearly distinct in longitude and height from the prominences found about two stellar radii above the surface. While BO Mic's photospheric brightness is modulated due to extended starspots, neither the chromospheric nor the X-ray emission show a pronounced rotational modulation., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We have obtained a densely sampled time series of CaII H&K line profiles of the ultrafast rotating K-dwarf star BO Mic. Taken at high resolution, the spectra reveal pronounced variations of the emission core profiles. We interpret these variations as signs of concentrated chromospherically active regions, in analogy to solar plages. We further interpret the variations as partly due to the rapid growth and decay of plages, while other variations appear to be caused by plages moved over the visible stellar disk by rotation. The equivalent width of the Ca K core emission changes approximately in anti-phase to the photospheric brightness, suggesting an association of the chromospheric plage regions with pronounced dark photospheric spots. We believe that further analysis of the presented spectral time series will lead to a chromospheric Doppler image of BO mic.

We study the short-term evolution of starspots on the ultrafast-rotating star HD197890 ("Speedy Mic" = BO Mic, K 0-2V, P_rot = 0.380 d) based on two Doppler images taken about 13 stellar rotations apart. Each image is based on spectra densely sampling a single stellar rotation. The images were reconstructed by our Doppler imaging code CLDI (Clean-like Doppler imaging) from line profiles extracted by spectrum deconvolution. Our Doppler images constructed from two independent wavelength ranges agree well on scales down to 10 degrees on the stellar surface. In conjunction with nearly parallel V-band photometry our observations reveal a significant evolution of the spot pattern during as little as two stellar rotations. We suggest that such a fast spot evolution demands care when constructing Doppler images of highly active stars based on spectral time series extending over several stellar rotations. The fast intrinsic spot evolution on BO Mic impedes the determination of a surface differential rotation; in agreement with earlier results by other authors we determine an upper limit of |alpha| < 0.004 +- 0.002.
