BackgroundChinese students are extremely vulnerable to developing mental illness. The stigma associated with mental illness presents a barrier to seeking help for their mental health. ObjectiveThe Linking Hearts—Linking Youth and ‘Xin’ (hearts) project is an implementation science project that seeks to reduce mental illness stigma and promote the mental health of university students in Jinan, China. The Linking Hearts project consists of 3 components. In this paper, we outline the protocol for the first component, that is, the contextual assessment and analysis of the mental health needs of university students as the first step to inform the adaptation of an evidence-based intervention to be implemented in Jinan, China. MethodsSix local universities will participate in the Linking Hearts project. A total of 100 students from each university (n=600) will engage in the contextual assessment through self-report surveys on depression, anxiety, stress, mental health knowledge, and mental health stigma. Quantitative data will be analyzed using several descriptive and inferential analyses via SPSS. A small number of participants (144 students and 144 service providers) will also be engaged in focus groups to assess the socio-environmental contexts of university students’ health and availability of mental health resources. Qualitative data will be transcribed verbatim and NVivo will be used for data management. Social network analysis will also be performed using EgoNet. ResultsLinking Hearts was funded in January 2018 for 5 years. The protocol of Linking Hearts and its 3 components was approved by the research ethics boards of all participating institutions in China in November 2018. Canadian institutions that gave approval were Ryerson University (REB2018-455) in January 2019, University of Alberta (Pro00089364), York University (e2019-162) in May 2019, and University of Toronto (RIS37724) in August 2019. Data collection took place upon ethics approval and was completed in January 2020. A total of 600 students were surveyed. An additional 147 students and 138 service providers took part in focus groups. Data analysis is ongoing. Results will be published in 2021. ConclusionsFindings from this contextual assessment and analysis will generate new knowledge on university students’ mental health status, mental health knowledge, and resources available for them. These findings will be used to adapt and refine the Acceptance and Commitment to Empowerment-Linking Youth N’ Xin intervention model. The results of this contextual assessment will be used to inform the adaptation and refinement of the mental health intervention to promote the mental health of Chinese university students in Jinan. This paper recounts the development and implementation of the "Peer Leader Training Manual" for the Story-Sharing for Sexual Health Research (SSSH) Study conducted in Toronto, Canada. In the disciplinary integration of health and adult education, the community-engaged health research reported here reflects the successful partnership of a team of academic researchers with a community-based organization. Eight community-based South Asian women peer leaders were collectively recruited and trained as research associates to explore how stories (relative to fact sheets) can be used to promote dialogue and knowledge about sexual health and reduce HIV stigma among South Asian women. This paper is about the adult education tool used to orient them to the SSSH Study and train them for related field work: recruit SSSH Study participants, arrange intervention site and logistics, deliver intervention, administer pre and post surveys, conduct focus groups, and ensure data security. The manual played a significant role in training the peer leaders who are now prepared to further engage in future community health partnerships. This tool will also be helpful for other community-engaged health research involving sexual health initiatives in marginalized communities.

Objective: There is a scarcity of research on sexual health education among women in South Asian diasporic communities in Canada, resulting in a need for designing culturally relevant approaches to teach about sexual health and HIV prevention, seen as taboo topics. This community-based research study was designed to determine the effectiveness of using culturally relevant stories as a model for sexual health education for South Asian immigrant women (Toronto, Canada). Design: South Asian women participants were randomly allocated to either a fact-based intervention (n = 40) or a story-based intervention (n = 38). Focus group data from fact-based and story-based educational workshops were thematically analyzed and interpreted using the parasocial contact hypothesis. Findings: Although participants found the fact sheets to be informative, they were not culturally relevant. The educational sessions using stories were judged to better meet this criterion with many participants feeling the information was relevant to their community, useful for friends and families, and relatable to their lives. Participants assigned considerable value to the family as an important site for sexual health education. Finally, study participants, particularly those who had the storytelling intervention talked about the importance of having a safe space to discuss taboo topics like sexual health. Conclusions: Learning about sexual health through stories is deeper relative to static fact sheets. Both play a role in helping South Asian women learn about sexual health and HIV prevention; however, story sharing was seen as a culturally relevant approach that emphasized the role of the family in sexual health conversations. Family life educators and other health practitioners need to draw on cultural competence as they design culturally relevant material and interventions for sexual health education. Background: Although cervical cancer (CC) is highly preventable through appropriate screening methods like the Papanicolaou (Pap) test, which enables early detection of malignant and precancerous lesions, access to such screening has not been equitable across social groups. Sex workers and people with records of incarceration are among the most under-screened populations in Ontario. Little is known about the acceptability and feasibility of HPV self-sampling (HPV-SS) as an alternative cervical cancer screening method for these groups. This online, community-based mixed-methods pilot study aimed to address this knowledge gap. Methods: Eighty-four under- and never-screened sex workers and ex-prisoners aged 25–69 years and residing in the Greater Toronto Area, were recruited by community peer associates. Participants completed an online survey and viewed short videos about CC and screening with Pap and HPV-SS. Those who opted for HPV-SS conducted the test at one of two collaborating organizations. Results: The median age of participants was 36.5 years. Most had limited knowledge about CC and screening. Approximately 13% identified as non-binary, and 5% as two-spirit or trans men, with the majority having completed secondary education. Of the participants, 88% chose HPV-SS, and one-third tested positive for high-risk HPV types. The ability to self-sample without judgment from healthcare providers was noted as a key advantage. However, there was a need for training on proper HPV-SS techniques. Conclusions: To improve cervical cancer screening among sex workers, increasing awareness through participatory community co-creation of sexual health education is essential. Additionally, offering HPV-SS as a screening option is crucial, given its demonstrated acceptability and feasibility within this population, many of whom lack a primary care provider and face discriminatory attitudes in healthcare settings. In this study, we applied an intersectional framework to explore service providers' perspectives on the mental health needs of newcomer young men. We conducted focus groups and interviews with 26 service providers in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver, Canada. Findings show that service providers made sense of young men's mental health needs and service access in the context of systems. We identified three interconnected themes: newcomer young men's senses of self in relation to macro-systems, including racism and economic marginalization; settling well as a determinant of mental health; and systems capacities and interdependent resilience. While service providers are engaged in cross-sectoral work in support of newcomer young men's mental health, this work is not being sufficiently supported. Further work is needed around cross-sector capacity bridging and advocacy, as well as the tailoring of services to young men without the assumption and reinforcement of gender stereotypes. Story-based learning is well recognized as an effective strategy for adult health education. However, there is a scarcity of research on story-based health education among women in South Asian diasporic communities. To address this gap, we undertook a pilot study in Toronto to explore how South Asian women respond to the use of fact-based and story-based materials for HIV/STI prevention. A total of 78 women were recruited from across the city. We engaged nearly half of the women (n=40) using fact sheets on HIV/STIs, and the remainder (n=38) using stories written by South Asian women on HIV/STIs. Surveys and focus groups were used to explore participants' responses in terms of knowledge, attitudes and perspectives. Results indicated that both approaches were effective in increasing participants' knowledge of HIV/STIs. Participants in the fact-based sessions tended to distance themselves from the idea of personal HIV/STI risks. Participants in the story-based groups were emotionally engaged, expressing personal commitments to take a stand against HIV stigma. In summary, within-culture stories are potentially effective tools that enable women to make sense of their own life situations and contextual vulnerabilities. Story-based materials are useful for breaking the silence of taboo topics, addressing stigma and discrimination and raising awareness about collective empowerment.

Research on the effect of cardiorespiratory (CR) exercise on upper extremity (UE) limb volume is limited in women with breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). The aim of this study was to compare changes in UE volume immediately following a symptom-limited CR treadmill test in women with and without BCRL. As part of a cross-sectional study, 133 women post unilateral BC treatment completed symptom-limited treadmill testing. Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) was used to measure UE resistance before and immediately following treadmill testing. Resistance ratios >1 (unaffected side/affected side) indicate greater volume in the affected limb. T-tests and repeated measures ANOVA were performed to evaluate differences between and within groups. Mean age was 56.2 years (SD 9.4); BMI was 26.13 kg m(-2) (SD 5.04). For women with previously diagnosed BCRL (n = 63), the resistance ratio was 1.116 (SD 0.160) pre-treadmill and 1.108 (SD 0.155) post-treadmill. For women without BCRL (n = 70), the resistance ratio was 0.990 (SD 0.041) pre-treadmill and 1.001 (SD 0.044) post-treadmill. Resistance ratios for women with BCRL were higher than those for women without BCRL at both time points (main effect of group: p < 0.001). No main effects were found for time (p = 0.695). A statistically significant effect was found for the time-by-group interaction (p = 0.002). 78% of the women with BCRL wore a compression garment during testing. Following testing, the women with BCRL demonstrated a non-statistically significant decrease in the resistance ratio, suggesting an immediate decrease in interlimb volume difference. The women without BCRL demonstrated an increase in the resistance ratio.

Pulsars (PSRs) and Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe) form some of the most interesting high-energy astrophysical systems. Their prominent synchrotron emission makes them ideal candidates for polarimetry. Here, after briefly summarizing the scientific rationale underpinning the importance of their polarimetric studies, we review the current status and achievements obtained by the IXPE mission. For the first time, we have space- and phase-resolved X-ray data that allow us to set constraints on the geometry and level of turbulence of the magnetic field which, in turn, can help us to better understand which acceleration and radiation model(s) might be at work in these systems.
