The burgeoning of antibiotic resistance has emerged as a pressing global challenge. To gain a deeper understanding of the interactions between antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), biocide and metal resistance genes (BRGs&MRGs), and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), this study utilized metagenomics and metatranscriptomics to investigate their co-occurrence and co-expression in two consortia subjected to long-term exposure to chloramphenicol and lincomycin. Long-term exposure to these antibiotics resulted in significant disparities in resistance profiles: Consortium CAP harbored 130 ARGs and 150 BRGs&MRGs, while Consortium LIN contained 57 ARGs and 32 BRGs&MRGs. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events were predicted at 125 and 300 instances in Consortium CAP and Consortium LIN , respectively, facilitating the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria, such as Caballeronia (10 ARGs, 2 BRGs&MRGs), Cupriavidus (2 ARGs, 10 BRGs&MRGs), and Bacillus (14 ARGs, 21 BRGs&MRGs). Chloramphenicol exposure significantly enriched genes linked to phenicol resistance (floR, capO) and co-expressed ARGs and BRGs&MRGs, while lincomycin exerted narrower effects on resistance genes. Additionally, both antibiotics modulated the expression of degradation genes and virulence factors, highlighting their role in altering bacterial substrate utilization and pathogenic traits. Food waste (FW) presents a significant opportunity for renewable energy production through anaerobic digestion (AD) when subjected to appropriate treatment. This study investigates the impact of thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) on FW at varying temperature levels (90 °C, 120 °C, and 140 °C) prior to mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion with sewage sludge (SS). Results demonstrate enhanced FW hydrolysis at 120 °C, leading to a cumulative methane yield of 324.39 ± 4.5 mL/gVS add , representing a 41.75% increase over untreated FW (228.83 ± 1.13 mL/gVS add ). Shifts in microbial communities, particularly Methanosarcina, Methanobactrium, and Methanobrevibacter, support efficient methanogenesis. Co-digestion of FW pretreated at 120 °C yields maximum energy production of 11.48 MJ/t, a 49.47% improvement compared to untreated processes. The economic analysis underscores the profitability of co-digestion with FW pretreated at 120 °C. Chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) is a rapid wastewater treatment process involving treating wastewater with two chemical-aided processes, coagulation, and flocculation. In the present study, a natural extracellular polymeric substance flocculant (EPSBF) produced by Klebsiella pneumonia UKD24, a bacterium isolated from the sewage treatment plant, and a synthetic polyacrylamide anionic polymer flocculant (PAM) were evaluated to treat polluted river water. The synthetic PAM showed immediate turbidity reduction after agitation, while the EPSBF expressed a rapid decrease in optical density. After 20 min of the settling period, the EPSBF showed reduced rates of turbidity, optical density, and chemical oxygen demand at 74.14 ± 5.2%, 89.37 ± 0.76%, and 87.21 ± 0.73%, respectively, while PAM showed 67.08 ± 4%, 85.68 ± 2%, and 86.57 ± 2%, respectively. EPSBF treatment significantly improved the water quality parameters in terms of total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, conductivity, and oxidation-reduction potential than PAM treatment. However, the EPSBF has shown a more water-holding capacity and relatively weak flock formation, producing more sludge volume than PAM. Furthermore, though the sludge produced by the EPSBF treatment had a higher moisture content, it showed shorter capillary suction time (CST). In contrast, sludge formed in PAM treatment had lower moisture content, but it exhibited prolonged CST value indicating that PAM treatment sludge showed slow dewaterability.

Atenolol (ATL) that can decrease heart rate and reduce renin release is extensively used in the treatment of hypertension, angina, and other diseases. ATL's popularity has therefore drawn attention to its environmental behavior and potential impacts. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the main collection point for ATL entering the water environment, highlighting the necessity of studying its fate in the environment. In this study, five WWTPs with different processes in China's representative densely urban agglomerations (Pearl River Delta [PRD] region) were selected as certain representative sampling sites to investigate the fate of ATL in the WWTPs over four seasons. Results showed that ATL concentration in the influent of these WWTPs was 146.5-918.6 ng/L and the corresponding concentration in the effluent was 43.0-534.1 ng/L, achieving a certain degree of removal. The seasonal ATL removal performance varied greatly among these WWTPs, Liede, Tai Po, and Sha Tin WWTPs showed better removal stability. Meanwhile, the average ATL removal rates in Tai Po (83.36%) and Sha Tin (81.67%) were higher than those in the Futian (71.24%), Liede (55.44%), and Stonecutters Island WWTPs (44.96%). The primary treatment capacity of Futian WWTP was better than that of Tai Po and Sha Tin WWTPs in removing ATL, while the performance of secondary treatment was opposite. Moreover, Zahn-Wellens test demonstrated that ATL could be almost completely degraded after 30 days and some protonated molecules (e.g., m/z 145 and m/z 190) metabolites were formed, indicating that degradation may play a role in ATL removal in WWTPs., (© 2024 The Author(s). Conductive materials have been utilized to facilitate direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) in anaerobic digestion (AD) to enhance methane production. However, the impact and efficacy of the co-application of biochar and nano-Fe 3 O 4 have not been adequately elucidated, particularly their interaction on electron transfer efficiency. In this investigation, we examined the influence of simultaneously or independently adding biochar and nano-Fe 3 O 4 to food waste (FW) and sewage sludge (SS) anaerobic co-digestion. A synergistic effect was observed under the co-application condition. Methane production reached 300.3 ± 19.8 mL/gCOD with the co-application of biochar and nano-Fe 3 O 4 , representing a 43.3%, 35.4%, and 5.4% increase compared to the sole Fe 3 O 4 , biochar, and nano-Fe 3 O 4 , respectively. Mechanistic analysis revealed that, in comparison to sole biochar and nano-Fe 3 O 4 , their co-occurrence significantly accelerated hydrolysis and acidogenesis, thereby enhancing the release of soluble organic components. Furthermore, the application of nano-Fe 3 O 4 improved system stability and significantly promoted propionate degradation, maintaining a favorable condition for methane production. Additionally, the noteworthy increase in INT-ETS activity and cytochrome c concentration indicated that the co-application of biochar and nano-Fe 3 O 4 stimulated electron transfer. Correspondingly, the activity of coenzyme F420, which indicates the performance of methanogenesis, exhibited a 2.44-fold increase compared to the control. This indicated that nano-Fe 3 O 4 and biochar co-amendment can serve as a robust platform to strengthen DIET. A significant knowledge gap exists regarding the impact of soil organic matter on the bioavailability of Ag 2 S-NPs (environmentally relevant forms of Ag-NPs) in soil-earthworm-plant systems. This study used two soils with varying organic matter content, both with and without earthworms, to investigate the bioavailability of Ag 2 S-NPs. The findings revealed an 80 % increase in Ag bioaccessibility to soybeans in soils with high organic matter content compared to soils with low organic matter. Additionally, the presence of earthworms significantly increased Cl concentrations from 24.3-62.2 mg L -1 to 80.1-147.2 mg L -1 , triggering the elevated bioavailability of Ag. Interestingly, Ag 2 S-NPs eliminated the stimulative effects of earthworms on plant nutrient uptake. In the presence of earthworms, the high organic matter soil amended with Ag 2 S-NPs exhibited lower concentrations of essential elements (Ca, Cu, Fe, K, and P) in plant tissues compared to soils without earthworms. Our study presents evidence of the transformation of Ag 2 S-NPs into Ag-NPs across various soil solutions, resulting in the formation of Ag nanoparticle complexes. Particularly noteworthy is the significant reduction in particle sizes in soils incubated with earthworms and high organic matter content, from 85.0 nm to 40.2 nm. Notably, in the rhizosphere soil, a decrease in the relative abundance of nutrient cycling-related phyla was observed, with reductions of 18.5 % for Proteobacteria and 30.0 % for Actinobacteriota. The exploration of sediment pollution caused by PAHs and its impact on microbial communities can provide valuable insights for the remediation of sediments. The spatial distribution of PAHs and their impact on the microbial community within the Pearl River Estuary were investigated in this study. The findings revealed that the total concentration ranges of 16 PAHs were between 24.26 and 3075.93 ng/g, with naphthalene, fluorene, and phenanthrene potentially exerting adverse biological effects. More PAHs were found to accumulate in subsurface sediments, and their average accumulation rates gradually decreased as the number of rings in PAHs increased, ranging from 180 % for 2-ring to 36 % for 6-ring. The phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi were found to dominate both surface and subsurface sediments The correlation between microbial genera and PAHs contents was weak in sediments with low levels of PAHs contamination, while a more significant positive relationship was observed in sediments with high levels of PAHs contamination. The physicochemical properties of sediments, such as pH, soil structure and Cu significantly influence bacterial community composition in highly contaminated sediments. Additionally, the network analysis revealed that certain bacterial genera, including Novosphingobium, Robiginitalea and Synechococcus_CC9902, played a pivotal role in the degradation of PAHs. N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q) has been identified to induce acute toxicity to multifarious aquatic organisms at exceptionally low concentrations. The ubiquity and harmful effects of 6PPD-Q emphasize the critical need for its degradation from water ecosystems. Herein, we explored the transformation of 6PPD-Q by an ultraviolet-activated peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) system, focusing on mechanism, products and toxicity variation. Results showed that complete degradation of 6PPD-Q was achieved when the initial ratio of PMS and 6PPD-Q was 60:1. The quenching experiments and EPR tests indicated that SO 4 •- and •OH radicals were primarily responsible for 6PPD-Q removal. Twenty-one degradation products were determined through high-resolution orbitrap mass spectrometry, and it was postulated that hydroxylation, oxidative cleavage, quinone decomposition, ring oxidation, as well as rearrangement and deamination were the major transformation pathways of 6PPD-Q. Toxicity prediction revealed that all identified products exhibited lower acute and chronic toxicities to fish, daphnid and green algae compared to 6PPD-Q. Exposure experiments also uncovered that 6PPD-Q considerably reduced the community diversity and altered the community assembly and functional traits of the sediment microbiome. However, we discovered that the toxicity of 6PPD-Q degradation solutions was effectively decreased, suggesting the superior detoxifying capability of the UV/PMS system for 6PPD-Q. This review article explores the challenges associated with landfill leachate resulting from the increasing disposal of municipal solid waste in landfills and open areas. The composition of landfill leachate includes antibiotics (0.001-100 μg), heavy metals (0.001-1.4 g/L), dissolved organic and inorganic components, and xenobiotics including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (10-25 μg/L). Conventional treatment methods, such as biological (microbial and phytoremediation) and physicochemical (electrochemical and membrane-based) techniques, are available but face limitations in terms of cost, accuracy, and environmental risks. To surmount these challenges, this study advocates for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to strengthen treatment efficacy through predictive analytics and optimized operational parameters. It critically evaluates the risks posed by recalcitrant leachate components and appraises the performance of various treatment modalities, both independently and in tandem with biological and physicochemical processes. Notably, physicochemical treatments have demonstrated pollutant removal rates of up to 90% for various contaminants, while integrated biological approaches have achieved over 95% removal efficiency. However, the heterogeneous nature of solid waste composition further complicates treatment methodologies. Consequently, the integration of advanced ML algorithms such as Support Vector Regression, Artificial Neural Networks, and Genetic Algorithms is proposed to refine leachate treatment processes. This review provides valuable insights for different stakeholders specifically researchers, policymakers and practitioners, seeking to fortify waste disposal infrastructure and foster sustainable landfill leachate management practices. Feeding ruminants with high-quality forage can enhance digestibility and reduce methane production. Development of high-quality silage from leguminous plants with lactic acid bacteria can improve digestibility and it mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, we developed a high-quality alfalfa silage with improved fermentation index and microbial dynamics using Levilactobacillus brevis-KCC-44 at low or high moisture (LM/HM) conditions and preserved it for 75 or 150 days. Alfalfa fermentation with L. brevis enhances acidification and fermentation characteristics primarily due to the dominance of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) L. brevis (>95%) compared to alfalfa fermented with epiphytic LAB. The inoculant L. brevis improved the anaerobic fermentation indexes resulting in a higher level of lactic acid in both high (10.0 ± 0.12 & 8.90 ± 0.31%DM) and low moisture (0.55 ± 0.08 & 0.39 ± 0.0 %DM) in 75 and 150 days respectively, compared to control silage. In addition, the marginal amount of acetic acid (range from 0.23 ± 0.07 to 2.04 ± 0.27 %DM) and a reduced level of butyric acid (range between 0.03 ± 0.0 to 0.13 ± 02 %DM) was noted in silage treated with LAB than the control. The LAB count and abundance of Levilactobacillus were higher in alfalfa silage fermented with L. brevis. Microbial richness and diversity were reduced in alfalfa silage treated with L. brevis which prompted lactic acid production at a higher level even for a prolonged period of time. Although aerobic composting is usually utilized in livestock manure disposal, the emission of odorous gases from compost not only induces harm to the human body and the environment, but also causes loss of nitrogen, sulfur, and other essential elements, resulting in a decline in product quality. The impact of biotrickling filter (BTF) and insertion of carbon-based microbial agent (CBMA) on compost maturation, odor emissions, and microbial population during the chicken manure composting were assessed in the current experiment. Compared with the CK group, CBMA addition accelerated the increase in pile temperature (EG group reached maximum temperature 10 days earlier than CK group), increased compost maturation (GI showed the highest increase of 41.3% on day 14 in EG group), resulted in 36.59% and 14.60% increase in NO 3 - -N content and the total nitrogen retention preservation rate after composting. The deodorization effect of biotrickling filter was stable, and the removal rates of NH 3 , H 2 S, and TVOCs reached more than 90%, 96%, and 56%, respectively. Furthermore, microbial sequencing showed that CBMA effectively changed the microbial community in compost, protected the ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms, and strengthened the nitrification of the compost. In addition, the nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria were more active in the cooling period than they were in the thermophilic period. Moreover, the abundance of denitrification genes containing nirS, nirK, and nosZ in EG group was lower than that in CK group. Thus, a large amount of nitrogen was retained under the combined drive of BTF and CBMA during composting. Female tourism is gaining momentum in the world. Thus, a review of female tourism is essential to explore future research directions. The paper discusses the evolution of female tourism research from the early 1980s to 2022 through different analytical methods. The 116 articles published in the list of Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) journals were collected. A systematic quantitative assessment of 116 articles was conducted using HistCite, and research themes were identified using VOSviewer. Qualitative content analysis was conducted to trace the growth of research, understand the past research development of each research theme, and identify research gaps for further research. The results show that current female tourism research can be divided into three research themes: motivation, risk, and sexuality. The motivations for young female travellers, solo female travellers, and middle-aged female travellers are discussed. In the atmosphere of gender equality, current female tourism research in risk and sexuality contains contradictory viewpoints with past studies as a result of changing times. A research agenda in four potential research areas is recommended. Herein, a facile combination approach of chalcopyrite and sodium percarbonate (CuFeS 2 + SPC) was established to augment both TCC removal efficiency and sludge dewatering. Results showed that utilizing the CuFeS 2 dosage of 600 mg/g total solids (TS) under the optimal condition, along with the SPC dosage of 12.5 mg/g TS, an initial pH of 4.0, and a reaction duration of 40 min, led to a substantial reduction of 53.9% in the TCC content within the sludge, accompanied by a notable decrease of 36.9% in the water content. Compared to well-studied iron-based advanced oxidation processes, CuFeS 2 + SPC treatment proved to be more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Mechanistic findings demonstrated that •OH oxidation played a significant role in TCC removal, with O 2 •- and 1 O 2 acting as secondary factors. During the CuFeS 2 + SPC process, the received •OH, O 2 •- , and 1 O 2 destroyed the main binding sites of extracellular polymeric substances to TCC, including tryptophan-like protein, amide, CO stretch, and -COO- functional groups. As a result, approximately 50% of TCC was partially degraded within the solid sludge phase after the attack of radicals. Meanwhile, the decreased macromolecular organic compounds in solid sludge attenuated the binding efficacy of TCC, giving rise to the transfer of partial TCC to the liquid phase. Ultimately, the TCC in sludge was successfully removed, and five transformation products were identified. The multi-source hazardous waste co-disposal system, a recent innovation in the industry, offers an efficient approach for hazardous waste disposal. The incineration fly ash (HFA) produced by this system exhibits characteristics distinct from those of typical incineration fly ash, necessitating the use of adjusted disposal methods. This study examined the physicochemical properties, heavy metal content, heavy metal leaching concentration, and dioxin content of HFA generated by the new co-disposal system and compared them with those of conventional municipal waste incineration fly ash. This study investigated the solidification and stabilization of HFA disposal using the organic agent sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate combined with cement on a field scale. The findings revealed significant differences in the structure, composition, and dioxin content of HFA and FA; HFA contained substantially lower levels of dioxins than FA did. Concerning the heavy metal content and leaching; HFA exhibited an unusually high concentration of zinc, surpassing the permitted emission limits, making zinc content a critical consideration in HFA disposal. After stabilization and disposal, the heavy metal leaching and dioxin content of HFA can meet landfill disposal emission standards when a 1% concentration of 10% sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) and 150% silicate cement were employed. Developing low-cost and high-activity catalysts is one of the keys to promoting the catalytic pyrolysis of waste plastics to fuels for plastic recycling. This work studied the effect of clay as the catalyst on mixed plastic pyrolysis for fuel and energy recovery. Four kinds of clay, including nanoclay, montmorillonite, kaolin, and hydrotalcite, were used as catalysts for the pyrolysis of mixed plastic consisted of polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, polypropylene, low-density polyethylene, and high-density polyethylene. The product yield and distribution varied with different clay in pyrolysis. The highest yield of oil was 71.0 % when using montmorillonite as the catalyst. While the highest contents of gasoline range hydrocarbons and diesel range hydrocarbons in the oil were achieved when using kaolin and nanoclay, respectively as catalysts. For the gas products, the CO, C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 6 , C 3 H 6 , and C 4 H 10 increased with decreased CO 2 in the gaseous products when using clay as catalysts. This study investigates the role of virtual exhibition attributes (navigation, ubiquity, vividness, interactivity, visualization) in creating positive perceived green performance and satisfaction of exhibitors, thus benefiting the exhibitors' sustainable behaviors of Eco-exhibition. Two studies were conducted to verify the proposed hypotheses. In Study 1, 417 samples were collected from 2021 ME-Expo of China to test the model. In Study 2, the follow-up interviews were conducted with 18 participants to validate the quantitative results and gain deeper insights. The results of Study 1 indicate that adopting virtual exhibitions is critical in predicting exhibitors' perceived performance and satisfaction, which in turn, influences their pro-environmental behavior. The bioflocculant producing bacterial strain - UKD24 was isolated from the domestic sewage treatment plant. The isolated strain was identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae by using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The K. pneumoniae UKD24 showed remarkable flocculation rates when grown with the carbon sources namely glucose, sucrose and lactose, and many commercial nitrogen sources. Furthermore, the fish waste extract (FE) was used to enhance the productivity of the bioflocculant as a nitrogen supplement and it showed a significant level of flocculation rate similar to the commercial nitrogen sources. The Box-Behnken experiments were designed to predict the optimal conditions for bioflocculant production and it suggested that glucose - 3.247 g L -1 , FE - 0.5 g L -1 and inoculum size - 1% are the suitable levels for bioflocculant production. The FTIR analysis of the bioflocculant showed the functional groups related to the polysaccharides and the EEM analysis showed the fluorescence components related to the proteins and humic acids. The biochemical composition of the bioflocculant was identified as polysaccharides (24.36 ± 1.5%) and protein (12.15 ± 0.2%). The tested optimum conditions of the bioflocculant to induce flocculation were tested in the kaolin wastewater and it showed that the optimum dosage of the flocculant was 5 mg L -1 and the pH range was broad as 5-10. The cation dependency tests revealed that the monovalent and divalent cations are highly suitable for flocculation while the trivalent cations showed moderate flocculation. The Cr(VI) removal efficiency of the bioflocculant showed that ∼35% of heavy metal is trapped into flocks during the flocculation.

The continuous obstacles of cropping cause severe economic loss, which seriously threaten agricultural sustainable development. In addition, managing excess waste, such as potato peel and mineral waste residues, is a vital burden for industry and agriculture. Therefore, we explored the feasibility of reductive soil disinfestation (RSD) with potato peel and amendment with iron mineral waste residues for the production of Fritillaria thunbergii, which is vulnerable to continuous obstacles. In this study, the influences of iron mineral, RSD with different organic maters, as well as the combined effects of iron mineral and RSD on Fritillaria rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties, microbial communities, and Fritillaria production were investigated. The results revealed that the RSD treatments with potato peel significantly reduced the soil salinity and increased the soil pH, microbial activity, organic matter, and the contents of K and Ca. RSD with potato peel also significantly thrived of the beneficial microbes (Bacillus, Azotobacter, Microvirga, and Chaetomium), and down-regulated potential plant pathogens. RSD with potato peel significantly promoted F. thunbergii yield and quality. Moreover, the combined effects of RSD and iron mineral amendment further enhanced soil health, improved microbial community composition, and increased the yield and peimisine content of F. thunbergii by 24.2% and 49.3%, respectively. Overall, our results demonstrated that RSD with potato peel and amendment with iron mineral waste residues can efficiently improve soil fertility, modify the microbial community, and benefit for both the sustainable production of F. thunbergii and the management of waste. Many technical, climatic, environmental, biological, financial, educational, and regulatory factors are typically involved in solid waste management (SWM). Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques have lately gained attraction in providing alternative computational methods for resolving problems of solid waste management. The purpose of this review is to direct solid waste management researchers taking an interest in the use of artificial intelligence in their area of study through main research elements such as AI models, their own benefits and drawbacks, effectiveness, and applications. The major AI technologies recognized are discussed in the subsections of the review, which contains a specific fusion of AI models. It also covers research that equated AI technologies to other non-AI methodologies. The section that follows contains a brief debate of the numerous SWM disciplines where AI was consciously applied. Bio-wastes treatment and disposal has become a challenge because of their increasing output. Given the abundant organic matter in bio-wastes, its related resource treatment methods have received more and more attention. As a promising strategy, anaerobic digestion (AD) has been widely used in the treatment of bio-wastes, during which not only methane as energy can be recovered but also their reduction can be achieved. However, AD process is generally disturbed by some internal factors (e.g., low hydrolysis efficiency and accumulated ammonia) and external factors (e.g., input pollutants), resulting in unstable AD operation performance. Recently, hydrochar was wildly found to improve AD performance when added to AD systems. This review comprehensively summarizes the research progress on the performance of hydrochar-mediated AD, such as increased methane yield, improved operation efficiency and digestate dewatering, and reduced heavy metals in digestate. Subsequently, the underlying mechanisms of hydrochar promoting AD were systematically elucidated and discussed, including regulation of electron transfer (ET) mode, microbial community structure, bio-processes involved in AD, and reaction conditions. Moreover, the effects of properties of hydrochar (e.g., feedstock, hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) temperature, HTC time, modification and dosage) on the improvement of AD performance are systematically concluded. Finally, the relevant knowledge gaps and opportunities to be studied are presented to improve the progress and application of the hydrochar-mediated AD technology. Microbiological polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are rooted as the most promising bio-replacements of synthetic polymers. Inherent properties of these PHAs further expand their applicability in numerous industrial, environmental, and clinical sectors. To propel these, a new environmental, endotoxin free gram-positive bacterium i.e., Bacillus cereus IBA1 was identified to harbor advantageous PHA producer characteristics through high-throughput omics mining approaches. Unlike traditional fermentations, nutrient enriched strategy was used to enhance PHA granular concentrations by ∼2.3 folds to 2.78 ± 0.19 g/L. Additionally, this study is the first to confirm an underlying growth dependent PHA biogenesis through exploring PHA granule associated operons which harbour constitutively expressing PHA synthase (phaC) coupled with differentially expressing PHA synthase subunit (phaR) and regulatory protein (phaP, phaQ) amid different growth phases. Rhamnolipids are one of the most promising eco-friendly green glycolipids for bio-replacements of commercially available fossil fuel-based surfactants. However, the current industrial biotechnology practices cannot meet the required standards due to the low production yields, expensive biomass feedstocks, complicated processing, and opportunistic pathogenic nature of the conventional rhamnolipid producer strains. To overcome these problems, it has become important to realize non-pathogenic producer substitutes and high-yielding strategies supporting biomass-based production. We hereby review the inherent characteristics of Burkholderia thailandensis E264 which favor its competence towards such sustainable rhamnolipid biosynthesis. The underlying biosynthetic networks of this species have unveiled unique substrate specificity, carbon flux control and rhamnolipid congener profile. Acknowledging such desirable traits, the present review provides critical insights towards metabolism, regulation, upscaling, and applications of B. thailandensis rhamnolipids. Identification of their unique and naturally inducible physiology has proved to be beneficial for achieving previously unmet redox balance and metabolic flux requirements in rhamnolipids production. These developments in part are targeted by the strategic optimization of B. thailandensis valorizing low-cost substrates ranging from agro-industrial byproducts to next generation (waste) fractions. Cu is widely present in the feedstocks of dark fermentation, which can inhibit H 2 production efficiency of the process. However, current understanding on the inhibitory mechanisms of Cu, especially the microbiological mechanism, is still lacking. This study investigated the inhibitory mechanisms of Cu 2+ on fermentative hydrogen production by metagenomics sequencing. Results showed that the exposure to Cu 2+ reduced the abundances of high-yielding hydrogen-producing genera (e.g. Clostridium sensu stricto), and remarkably down-regulated the genes involved in substrate membrane transport (e.g., gtsA, gtsB and gtsC), glycolysis (e.g. PK, ppgK and pgi-pmi), and hydrogen formation (e.g. pflA, fdoG, por and E1.12.7.2), leading to significant inhibition on the process performances. The H 2 yield was reduced from 1.49 mol H 2 /mol-glucose to 0.59 and 0.05 mol H 2 /mol-glucose upon exposure to 500 and 1000 mg/L of Cu 2+ , respectively. The present research applied a triangulation approach in order to examine the mediating effect of job insecurity and the moderating effect of perceived susceptibility to COVID-19 (PSC) in the Job demands and resources model (JD-R model). Questionnaire and follow-up interview data were collected at two points in time from 292 hotel front-line employees and 15 hotel senior and department managers in Phuket, Thailand. Quantitative results indicated that job insecurity fully mediated the relationship between job demands and job burnout, as well as the relationship between job demands and work engagement. In addition, PSC partially moderated the research model. More specifically, the impact of job insecurity on work engagement is reduced when PSC is low and increased when PSC is high; the impact of job insecurity on job burnout is reduced when PSC is high and increased when PSC is low. The present work focused on extracting lactic and acetic acids from the leachate collected from leached bed reactor (LBR) during acidogenesis of food waste using the reactive extraction (RE) process. A wide range of diluents was screened either alone by physical extraction (PE) or in combination with extractants using RE to extract acids from the VFA mix. Aliquat 336-Butyl acetate/MIBK extractants in RE demonstrated higher distribution coefficients (k) and extraction yield (E %) than PE. The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the extraction of lactic and acetic acids from the synthetic acid mix, using three variables (extractant concentrations, solute/acid concentration and time). Consequently, these three variables were optimized for LBR leachate. The RE was promising, and extraction efficiencies of 65% (lactate), 75% (acetate), 86.2% (propionate) and almost 100% for butyrate and medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) were achieved after 16 h of extraction. The RSM optimization predicted a maximum E % of 59.60% and 34.67% for lactate and acetate in 5.5 and 1.17 min, respectively. In the leachate experiment, an increase in E% and k was observed with increasing extractant concentration and lactate and acetate concentrations over time. Using a 1M reactive extractant mix and 1.25 and 12 g/L of solute concentrations, the maximum E % of acetate and lactate were 38.66% and 61.8% in 10 min. The results could contribute to developing a rapid in-situ product recovery system integrated with food waste acidogenesis for lactate and acetate recovery, contributing to the bio-economy.

Kitchen waste (KW) is frequently available for free or with a negative cost due to its huge production. It contains a large proportion of organic substances, especially fermentable sugars, which can be used for bioplastic (polyhydroxyalkanoates or PHA) synthesis. Nevertheless, due to the difficulties in processing, various pre-treatments of KW are being investigated to enhance the concentration of simple sugars released during its hydrolysis. The effective use of KW will help in minimizing the issues of its inappropriate disposal. However, the review on KW to bioplastic synthesis is rarely reported in the literature. Hence, this particular review provides a comprehensive summary of the updated research developments in KW valorization and its potency as a feedstock for PHAs synthesis. Anaerobic digestion is considered an environmentally benign process for the recycling of food waste into biogas. However, unscientific disposal of ammonium-rich food waste digestate (FWD), a by-product of anaerobic digestion induces environmental issues such as odor nuisances, water pollution, phytotoxicity and pathogen transformations in soil, etc. In the present study, FWD produced from anaerobic digestion of source-separated food waste from markets and industries was used for converting FWD into biofertilizer using 20-L bench scale composters. The issues of nitrogen loss, NH 3 volatilization, and greenhouse gas N 2 O emission were addressed using in-situ composting technologies with the aid of tobacco and bamboo biochar produced at pyrolytic temperatures of 450 °C and 600 °C, respectively. The results demonstrated that the phytotoxic nature of FWD could be reduced into a nutrient-rich compost by mitigating nitrogen loss by 29-53% using 10% tobacco and 10% bamboo biochar in comparison with the control treatment. Tobacco biochar mitigates NH 3 emission by 63% but enhances the N 2 O emission by 65%, whereas bamboo biochar mitigates both NH 3 and N 2 O emissions by 48% and 31%, respectively. Overall, 10% tobacco and 10% bamboo biochar amendment could reduce total nitrogen loss by 29% and 53%, respectively. Furthermore, the biochar addition significantly enhanced the biodegradation rate of FWD and the mature compost could be produced within 21 days of FWD composting as seen by an increased seed germination index (>50% on dry weight basis). The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated uncertainties and restrictions have adverse impacts on university students' mental wellbeing. Evidence shows that virtual nature contact has mental health benefits. However, little is known about the potential beneficial health impacts of virtual nature contact during times of social distancing, when access to the natural environment is restricted. This pilot study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a 3-week virtual nature contact in improving nature connectedness and reducing psychophysiological stress. A sample of 56 university students in Hong Kong was randomly assigned to control and nature interventions using 2-D video played for 15 min three times a week for 3 weeks. Nature connectedness, perceived restorativeness and psycho-physiological wellbeing were measured. Our findings show significant changes in psychological stress levels after nature interventions compared with the baseline, including increased happiness and stronger emotions of comfort and relaxation. When compared with the control group, the results show the nature intervention group has significantly higher levels of nature connectedness, happiness, and positive affect, but no significant effects on other psychological and physiological variables (e.g., cardiovascular responses). High accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) is one of the major concerns during mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion of food waste (FW) and sewage sludge (SS). Therefore, improving the stability of the anaerobic digestion process could surpass quick acidification while accelerating methanogenesis. In this study, the suitability of biochar-assisted co-digestion was evaluated at different inoculum and substrate ratios (I/S ratios: 0.1, 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9). The maximum methane yield of 256.85 mL/gVS add was observed at an I/S ratio of 0.6. The results indicated fast volatile solid removal (∼ 47.17% to 73%) and a critical role of biochar addition in alleviating the underlying inhibitions. Substantial changes in the microbial community composition including Methanosata , Methanobrevibacter, and Methanosarcina were also observed which predominated and stabilised the methanogenesis process at higher I/S ratios. These results emphasised that the anaerobic co-digestion of FW/sludge is a promising approach, wherein the biochar amendment at different I/S ratios should be well maintained to avoid inhibitions from excess microbial VFA acidification of organic waste feedstocks.

In this study, exogenous Megasphaera elsdenii inoculum and acetate supplementation were introduced at the acidogenic phase to regulate the acidogenic fermentation pathway and assess their effects on food waste (FW) carbon conversion in two-phase anaerobic digestion (AD) system. These two additives significantly accelerated organic removal efficiency and subsequently increased FW hydrolysis and acidogenesis by 16% and 35%, respectively. As expected, two exogenous additives promoted butyrate fermentation during FW acidogenesis. With regard to the role of exogenous additives, both hydrogen and butyrate yields increased by over 60%. This desired increment resulted in a 25% increase in methane production. The overall carbon conversion from FW in the integrated two-phase AD system was enhanced by biochemical additives, which was 1.3-fold higher than that in control without any additives. The influence of biochar on anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic waste have been widely studied. However, the effect of biochar on the mitigation of acidification and subsequently the stimulation of methanogenesis recovery during mono food waste (FW) digestion process under a low inoculum to substrate (I/S) ratio (i.e. a high organic loading) is rarely investigated. In this study, the benefit of biochar with respect to methane production from FW was explored in a mono FW AD system with four different additional amounts of biochar, i.e. 0, 5, 10 and 15 g/L. Results revealed that biochar boosted methane production in AD at a low I/S ratio by 390-530% through stimulating methanogenic activity, improving organics removal and enhancing process stability. The biochar dosage of 10 g/L demonstrated the highest biodegradability of 92.3% and the highest specific methane production of 553.0 mL/g VS removed among all groups. Without biochar addition, volatile fatty acids (VFAs) accumulated to 20 g/L and the highest total ammonium-N (TAN) was > 1200 mg/L. The suppression of methanogenesis was significantly correlated with VFA and TAN ( p  < 0.05). Therefore, biochar addition presented a positive effect on VFAs degradation and buffering capacity which could be an effective approach to enhance methane production from FW digestion at a low inoculum to substrate ratio without the fear of system failure.
