Traditionally, satellites have performed the function of a simple repeater. Newer data distribution satellite architectures, however, require demodulation of many frequency division multiplexed uplink channels by a single demultiplexer/demodulator unit, baseband processing and routing of individual voice/data circuits, and remodulation into time division multiplexed (TDM) downlink carriers. The TRW MCDD (Multichannel Demultiplexer/Multirate Demodulator) operates on a 37.4 MHz composite input signal. Individual channel data rates are either 64 Kbps or 2.048 Mbps. The wideband demultiplexer divides the input signal into 1.44 MHz segments containing either a single 2.048 Mbps channel or thirty two 64 Kbps channels. In the latter case, the narrowband demultiplexer further divides the single 1.44 MHz wideband channel into thirty two 45 KHz narrowband channels. With this approach the time domain Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) channelizer processing capacity is matched well to the bandwidth and number of channels to be demultiplexed. By using a multirate demodulator fewer demodulators are required while achieving greater flexibility. Each demodulator can process a wideband channel or thirty two narrowband channels. Either all wideband channels, a mixture of wideband and narrowband channels, or all narrowband channels can be demodulated. The multirate demodulator approach also has lower nonrecurring costs since only one design and development effort is needed. TRW has developed a proof of concept (POC) model which fully demonstrates the signal processing fuctions of MCDD. It is capable of processing either three 2.048 Mbps channels or two 2.048 Mbps channels and thirty two 64 Kbps channels. An overview of important MCDD system engineering issues is presented as well as discussion on some of the Block Oriented System Simulation analyses performed for design verification and selection of operational parameters of the POC model. Systems engineering analysis of the POC model confirmed that the MCDD concepts are not only achievable but also balance the joint goals of minimizing on-board complexity and cost of ground equipment, while retaining the flexibility needed to meet a wide range of system requirements.

The potential false-lock problem associated with the sampled data type of Costas loop implementation is addressed in this paper. The term 'alias lock' is used here to differentiate this type of false lock behavior from the data sideband false lock behavior of analog Costas loops. It is shown that the sampled-data version of the conventional Costas loop, sampled at a rate 1/T(s), can alias lock at frequencies that are multiples of 1/2T(s) away from the carrier frequency. It is also shown that the alias lock problem of the sampled data version of the Costas loop with hard-limited in-phase channel is further compounded by the potential occurrence of false lock frequencies at rational multiples of 1/2T(s) away from the carrier. The false lock S-curves of I-Q loops and decision-directed I-Q loops are investigated in detail, with and without additive noise. Close agreement between theory and earlier experimental results is also demonstrated.

This paper investigates the tracking performance of a Costas loop in the presence of single and multiple in-band pulsed RFI signals and receiver additive noise. It is shown that the loop's tracking performance is very sensitive to the pulse durations of the RFI signals, as well as their repetition rates and peak powers relative to those of the desired signal. The presence of in-band RFI can affect the loop's tracking performance in basically three ways. 1) The loop tracks the composite phase of the RFI instead of the phase of the desired signal when the effective RFI power is greater than that of the signal. 2) When the effective RFI power is not sufficiently large to capture the loop, there still will exist static phase error biases which cause the loop to lock at a phase between that of the desired signal and the composite RFI. 3) There is an increase in the rms phase jitter over the nominal design. These latter two effects degrade the bit error probability performance of the receiver. More significantly, if the nominal loop bandwidth is not designed properly to account for the increase in jitter phenomenon, frequency cycle slipping may result.

In connection with attempts to achieve very low error probabilities, Odenwalder (1970) proposed a concatenated coding system using the Viterbi-decoded convolutional codes as the inner code and Reed-Solomon (RS) codes as the outer code. Analytical and experimental results are presented concerning the effects of the receiver tracking phase error on the performance of the concatenated RS/Viterbi channel coding system. On the basis of these results it is concluded that certain problems regarding communication operations on deep-space missions can be alleviated by employing the RS/Viterbi coding system. In one-way communication, an employment of RS/Viterbi coding will also provide greater data protection than the Viterbi-decoded convolutional-only coding system.

The reconstructed carrier of a telemetry return signal is used in deriving the Doppler and range information in the radiometric systems. When suppressed carrier BPSK signalling with Costas loop demodulation is used, there are concerns on the amount of shift in the reconstructed carrier phase, when the received signal suffers asymmetric bandpass filtering through the various stages of the receiver. It is concluded that the phase shifts due to asymmetric bandpass filtering on the Costas loop's reconstructed carrier can be slightly worse than those suffered by the residual carrier loop's reconstructed carrier. However, they are well within the error budgets of the radiometric system.

The system design, hardware construction, and predicted performance of a Costas loop is presented. Its expected performance regarding steady state phase error under assumed Doppler conditions, rms phase jitter, and their respective sensitivities with respect to variations in signal to noise ratios are discussed.

The false (sideband) lock problem in Shuttle Costas loop receivers, in the presence of noise, is assessed. False lock margin is defined depending on symbol signal-to-noise ratio rather than in the absence of noise. Closed-form results are given for the case where the arm filters of the Costas loop are one-pole Butterworth filters as used in the Shuttle receivers. However, the approach taken is also general enough to cover filters of arbitrary characteristics. As part of the development of the false lock margin, it is shown that the false lock phenomenon of the squaring loop is identical to that of the Costas loop.

The paper discusses implementations of the carrier recovery loop for suppressed carrier binary phase shift keyed signals. The tracking performance of a practical squaring loop where the times-two multiplier is mechanized as a limiter/multiplier combination is developed. This produces the absolute value of the arriving signal which is practical in terms of low signal-to-noise ratios, a wide dynamic range of signal level, and temperature variations. The approach is compared to the usual squaring loop whose squaring circuit is the times-two multiplier exhibiting a square law characteristic.

The optimum acquisition sweep strategy was determined for a PN code despreader when the a priori probability density function was not uniform. A psuedo noise spread spectrum system was considered which could be utilized in the DSN to combat radio frequency interference. In a sample case, when the a priori probability density function was Gaussian, the acquisition time was reduced by about 41% compared to a uniform sweep approach.

A method is presented for optimizing (minimizing) the acquisition time for a PN-type spread spectrum system when the a priori probability density function is not uniform. For an assumed a priori Gaussian density function, calculations show that the acquisition time, when the 0.5 probability acquisition time is used as a measure of acquisition time, is reduced by 40% for a cell detection probability of 0.25 and when three sweeps are used. For the same parameters and with four sweeps the acquisition time is reduced by 41%. When the acquisition time probability is set to 0.9 instead of 0.5, the reduction is 25% of the uniform sweep time.

Linear (translation), hard-limited, and demod/remod types of satellite repeaters are considered in this paper. Both uncoded and coded multiple phase shift keyed (MPSK) signals are assumed to be transmitted through these repeaters. Relative performances of these repeaters in the presence of uplink and downlink noises are then compared quantitatively. Probabilities of bit errors and the computational cutoff rates are computed for 2, 4, and 8 phases PSK signals, with uplink and downlink SNRs as parameters.

The acquisition/tracking performance of a practical squaring loop in which the times two multiplier is mechanized as a limiter/multiplier combination is evaluated. This squaring approach serves to produce the absolute value of the arriving signal as opposed to the perfect square law action which is required in order to render acquisition and tracking performance equivalent to that of a Costas loop. The Ku-Band orbiter signal design for the forward link is assessed. Acquisition time results and acquisition and tracking thresholds are summarized. A tradeoff study which pertains to bit synchronization techniques for the high rate Ku-Band channel is included and an optimum selection is made based upon the appropriate design constraints.
