Abstract

The geometrically-frustrated, triangular antiferromagnet GGG exhibits a rich mix of short-range order and isolated quantum states. We investigate the effects of up to 1% Neodymium substitution for Gallium on the ac magnetic response at temperatures below 1 K in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. Substitutional disorder actually drives the system towards a more perfectly frustrated state, apparently compensating for the effect of imperfect Gadolinium/Gallium stoichiometry, while at the same time more closely demarcating the boundaries of isolated, coherent clusters composed of hundreds of spins. Abstract

We examine the configurational phase transitions of flexible polymer chains in planar mixed flows. We distinguish three distinct phases: the coiled state (C) in which the flow is unable to deform the chain significantly from its equilibrium configuration, the tumbling state (T) in which the chain undergoes a tumbling motion and the chain fluctuations are comparable to the full chain contour length as in shear flow, and the fully stretched state (S) in which the chain is fully stretched in its steady configuration and the chain fluctuations are small compared to the full chain contour length as in extensional flow. As the mixed flow parameter a changes, the chain undergoes changes in configuration from C to T to S. We consider separately the phase transitions from C to T (C-T) and from T to S (T-S). We use physical arguments and supporting Brownian dynamics simulations to derive the range in the parameter α (as a function of the flow strength Wi and chain molecular weight N) over which such phase transitions occur in the high flow strength limit. 29. Long thoracic nerve block in video-assisted thoracoscopic wedge resection for pneumothorax.

Abstract

We hypothesised that relaxation of the serratus anterior muscle by long thoracic nerve (LTN) block could help pain relief after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Patients undergoing thoracoscopic wedge resection for pneumothorax were randomly assigned to control or LTN block. LTN block was performed before induction of general anaesthesia. Pain was evaluated using a visual analogue scale before anaesthesia induction (T0), on arrival to the post-anaesthetic care unit (PACU) (T1), every ten minutes after arrival in the PACU for 30 minutes (T2, T3 and T4) and one hour and 24 hours after discharge from the PACU (T5 and T6). Visual analogue scale scores from T1 to T5 in the block group were lower than the control group (T1: 36±11 vs 48±14 [P=0001], T2: 36±11 vs 51±15 [P<0.001], T3: 35±vs 52±15 [P<0.001], T4: 30±7 vs 45±17 [P<0.001] and T5: 26±5 vs 32±5 [P<0.001]). Total intravenous patient-controlled analgesia bolus dose (alfentanil 75 µg/ml) during PACU stay (1.6±1.2 vs 3.9±2.0 ml, P<0.001) and one hour after discharge from the PACU (0.5±0.8 vs 1.7±1.2 ml, P<0.001) in the LTN group was significantly lower than the control group. Total intravenous patient-controlled analgesia bolus dose from 1-24 hours after discharge from the PACU was similar between groups (P=0197). These findings indicate that LTN block reduced pain after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery from end-of-surgery to one hour after discharge from the PACU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The crystal structure of Escherichia coli tRNA(f)(Met), an initiator transfer RNA, has been determined. While grossly similar to that of the chain-elongating yeast tRNA(Phe), there are three major differences. One involves the folding of the anticodon loop; in particular, the position of the constant uridine, U33. This difference was unexpected and may be of functional significance.

Abstract

The article discusses an experimental and numerical study on the solid-liquid mixture flow of non-Newtonian fluid, CMC and bentonite solutions in concentric annulus. It cites the use of a closed-loop system made up of a centrifugal slurry pump with a by-pass line, a vertical annulus and a feed slurry tank for the experimental method and the Eulerian-Eulerian approach for granular flow in the numerical method. It concludes that as the inclination of the annulus increases, the volume of sand is also increased.
