1. Constraint-Based Breakpoints for Responsive Visualization Design and Development

Abstract

This paper introduces constraint-based breakpoints, a technique for designing responsive visualizations for a wide variety of screen sizes and datasets. Breakpoints in responsive visualization define when different visualization designs are shown. Conventionally, breakpoints are static, pre-defined widths, and as such do not account for changes to the visualized dataset or visualization parameters. To guarantee readability and efficient use of space across datasets, these static breakpoints would require manual updates. Constraint-based breakpoints solve this by evaluating visualization-specific constraints on the size of visual elements, overlapping elements, and the aspect ratio of the visualization and available space. Once configured, a responsive visualization with constraint-based breakpoints can adapt to different screen sizes for any dataset. We describe a framework that guides designers in creating a stack of visualization designs for different display sizes and defining constraints for each of these designs. We demonstrate constraint-based breakpoints for different data types and their visualizations: geographic data (choropleth map, proportional circle map, Dorling cartogram, hexagonal grid map, bar chart, waffle chart), network data (node-link diagram, adjacency matrix, arc diagram), and multivariate data (scatterplot, heatmap). Abstract

We present a method to create storytelling visualization with time series data. Many personal decisions nowadays rely on access to dynamic data regularly, as we have seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is thus desirable to construct storytelling visualization for dynamic data that is selected by an individual for a specific context. Because of the need to tell data-dependent stories, predefined storyboards based on known data cannot accommodate dynamic data easily nor scale up to many different individuals and contexts. Motivated initially by the need to communicate time series data during the COVID-19 pandemic, we developed a novel computer-assisted method for meta-authoring of stories, which enables the design of storyboards that include feature-action patterns in anticipation of potential features that may appear in dynamically arrived or selected data. In addition to meta-storyboards involving COVID-19 data, we also present storyboards for telling stories about progress in a machine learning workflow. Our approach is complementary to traditional methods for authoring storytelling visualization, and provides an efficient means to construct data-dependent storyboards for different data-streams of similar contexts.

Abstract

We report on an ongoing collaboration between epidemiological modellers and visualization researchers by documenting and reflecting upon knowledge constructs -- a series of ideas, approaches and methods taken from existing visualization research and practice -- deployed and developed to support modelling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Structured independent commentary on these efforts is synthesized through iterative reflection to develop: evidence of the effectiveness and value of visualization in this context; open problems upon which the research communities may focus; guidance for future activity of this type; and recommendations to safeguard the achievements and promote, advance, secure and prepare for future collaborations of this kind. In describing and comparing a series of related projects that were undertaken in unprecedented conditions, our hope is that this unique report, and its rich interactive supplementary materials, will guide the scientific community in embracing visualization in its observation, analysis and modelling of data as well as in disseminating findings. Equally we hope to encourage the visualization community to engage with impactful science in addressing its emerging data challenges. Abstract

While previous work exists on how to conduct and disseminate insights from problem-driven visualization projects and design studies, the literature does not address how to accomplish these goals in transdisciplinary teams in ways that advance all disciplines involved. In this paper we introduce and define a new methodological paradigm we call design by immersion, which provides an alternative perspective on problem-driven visualization work. Design by immersion embeds transdisciplinary experiences at the center of the visualization process by having visualization researchers participate in the work of the target domain (or domain experts participate in visualization research). Based on our own combined experiences of working on cross-disciplinary, problem-driven visualization projects, we present six case studies that expose the opportunities that design by immersion enables, including (1) exploring new domain-inspired visualization design spaces, (2) enriching domain understanding through personal experiences, and (3) building strong transdisciplinary relationships. Furthermore, we illustrate how the process of design by immersion opens up a diverse set of design activities that can be combined in different ways depending on the type of collaboration, project, and goals. 13. If We Get You, How Can We Keep You? Problems with Recruiting and Retaining Rural Administrators

Abstract

The focus on instructional leadership has reached a crescendo with the waivers for No Child Left Behind (2002). The leadership of the principal is known to be a key factor in supporting student achievement; however, recruitment and retention of administrators in rural areas of the Midwest is very difficult. This survey research study explored the recruitment and retention strategies, as well as factors influencing the loss or retention of quality administrators reported by Midwest superintendents. The themes that emerged as successful recruitment strategies included "growing your own" as the number one method of recruiting and retaining rural school administrators, salaries/benefits depending on location, emphasizing positive working conditions and climate/culture, and providing quality professional development. Retention strategies that worked well for rural schools were an emphasis on a positive school culture and climate, investment in professional development, and use of technology for mentoring along with increased benefits. 32. A review of the nematode assemblages of the genus Perameles(Peramelidae), Australian bandicoots, held in the South Australian Museum

Abstract

ABSTRACTA total of 210 vials of nematodes collected from four species of Perameles(representing 15 individuals of P. bougainville, 83 of P. gunnii,54 of P. nasutaand 19 of P. pallescens) held in the Australian Helminthological Collection of the South Australian Museum were examined. Nematodes were identified and parasite assemblages of the four hosts were compared. Using only the number of nematodes identified to species as an indicator of diversity, the nematode community of P. bougainvillewas the most depauperate (4 species) followed by P. gunnii(11 species), P. pallescens(12 species) and P. nasuta(20 species). None of the species were found in all four hosts. Excluding P. bougainville, Sorensen’s index of similarity showed that P. gunniiand P. pallescenshad the least similar, 0.26, and P. pallescensand P. nasutathe most similar, 0.50, nematode communities. Linstowinema warringtoniSmales, 1997, Mackerrastrongylus peramelis(Johnston & Mawson, 1938) and Peramelistrongylus skedastosMawson, 1960 were found in three hosts, P. gunnii, P. nasutaand P. pallescens. Each of the four hosts had a unique species profile: four species of Physalopterabeing found in P. nasuta, three in P. pallescens, one in P. gunniiand none in P. bougainville. Of the trichostrongyloids, Mackerrastrongylus perameliswas the most prevalent in P. pallescensand Peramelistrongylus skedastosin P. gunniiand P. nasuta. The influence of nematode collection techniques, sample sizes and host geographic range and ecology may have had on the assemblages we observed is discussed.

Abstract

This article investigates the issues surrounding teachers' use of social networking media and their First Amendment rights. It focuses on the need to develop a school district policy outlining specific guidelines for the use of technology and social networking. It also focuses on the changing world of technology and social networking as well as the legal consideration for teachers. The article reviews some cases in which teachers have been dismissed, and it outlines the method by which to determine whether the postings are protected speech. Finally, it provides questions that should be considered and guidelines for constructing a quality social networking policy. (Contains 1 figure.)

Abstract

This article investigates the importance of parent and community engagement in curriculum development, along with curriculum leadership, engaging stakeholders, and the importance of curriculum. Parent and community member engagement is examined in light of curriculum committee participation as reported by Missouri superintendents. Survey responses indicated that 72% to 75% of superintendents do not engage either parents or community members in the evaluation or review of curriculum development or approval of written curriculum or resources.

This article provides a community relations professional the rationale and background regarding the use of Universal Instructional Design in classrooms. It also provides community relations specialists with a communication plan for educating the public on Universal Instructional Design via a teaching and modeling approach. Results of a recent study of Missouri public school teachers indicate that Universal Instructional Design is a fairly new concept to K-12 educators and should thus be explored as well as communicated to parents and community so that it can become an accepted method of instruction to aid in student success.
