13. A study of ten tide gauge records from the Clyde in Western Scotland.

Abstract

Sea level information, and its understanding, are essential for research in oceanography and coastal engineering. This paper describes sea level variability in the Clyde using data from 10 tide gauges. High coherence of sea level variability is found between the Firth of Clyde and estuary of the River Clyde, and between the Firth and estuary and the upstream part of the river. Consequently, if gaps exist in any of the records, missing information can be inferred from others. This applies to timescales of typically hours and longer, appropriate for storm surge or mean sea level change studies. No evidence exists for ‘see-saw’ oscillations of the river on subtidal timescales, as reported for the River Thames, but higher-frequency variability (typical period 45 minutes) is found with equal, or opposite, phase at different river locations. Such a standing wave behaviour would be one of the few reported examples of ‘river seiches’. Data from several agencies are used: two gauges of the UK National Network of the Environment Agency, five from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, and three from Peel Ports. Versions 1 (released 2009) and 2 (released 2016) of the dataset have been used in many published studies, across a wide range of oceanographic and coastal engineering-related investigations concerned with evaluating tides, storm surges, extreme sea levels, and other related processes. The third version of the dataset (released 2021), presented here, contains double the number of years of data, and nearly four times the number of records, compared to Version 2. The dataset consists of records obtained from multiple sources around the world. This paper describes the assembly of the dataset, its processing, and its format, and outlines potential future improvements

28. Up the Airy mountain: The hunt for Ireland’s 19th century sea levels

Abstract

In 1842, as part of the first land survey of Ireland, sea level observations were taken at 22 sites for durations of around six weeks and published by the astronomer royal, George Biddell Airy. While such short records could be dismissed in more sea-level data-rich countries, Ireland has sparse and geographically-biased records and these short records have proved very valuable in reconstructing the patterns and magnitudes of regional sea level change. In this paper, we discuss the adjustments for intermediate datum redefinitions, corrections for atmospheric, seasonal, and tidal effects, including validations of all of these adjustments for the determination of accurate mean sea levels from short records. These measured changes are interpreted in terms of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), shedding light on the recent GIA modelling of the British-Irish ice sheet. Finally, we reflect on the utility of short sea level records in the understanding of regional, climate change-driven, sea-level change and the necessary constituents in this instance., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

38. Reanalyses of Maskelyne’s Tidal Data at St. Helena in 1761

Abstract

The construction of an electronic data set of the tidal measurements made at St. Helena in 1761 by Nevil Maskelyne is described. These data were first analysed by Cartwright (1971, 1972) in papers which have importance within studies of changing tides. However, Cartwright’s data files were never archived for the benefit of other researchers, demonstrating that ‘old data’ at risk can sometimes take the form of electronic rather than paper records. In the present paper, the newly digitised Maskelyne data have been reanalysed by several techniques in order to obtain an updated impression of whether the tide has changed at that location in over two and a half centuries. Our main conclusion, consistent with that of Cartwright, is that the major tidal constituent (M2) has changed little. However, the results of the various techniques demonstrate how difficult it is to obtain reliable conclusions for the smaller constituents.
