Search

Many questions posed in the Astro2020 Decadal survey in both the New Messengers and New Physics and the Cosmic Ecosystems science themes require a gamma-ray mission with capabilities exceeding those of existing (e.g. Fermi, Swift) and planned (e.g. COSI) observatories. ComPair, the Compton Pair telescope, is a prototype of such a next-generation gamma-ray mission. It had its inaugural balloon flight from Ft. Sumner, New Mexico in August 2023. To continue the goals of the ComPair project to develop technologies that will enable a future gamma-ray mission, the next generation of ComPair (ComPair-2) will be upgraded to increase the sensitivity and low-energy transient capabilities of the instrument. These advancements are enabled by AstroPix, a silicon monolithic active pixel sensor, in the tracker and custom dual-gain silicon photomultipliers and front-end electronics in the calorimeter. This effort builds on design work for the All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory eXplorer (AMEGO-X) concept that was submitted the 2021 MIDEX Announcement of Opportunity. The ComPair balloon instrument is a prototype gamma-ray telescope that aims to further develop technology for observing the gamma-ray sky in the MeV regime. ComPair combines four detector subsystems to enable parallel Compton scattering and pair-production detection, critical for observing in this energy range. This includes a 10 layer double-sided silicon strip detector tracker, a virtual Frisch grid low energy CZT calorimeter, a high energy CsI calorimeter, and a plastic scintillator anti-coincidence detector. The inaugural balloon flight successfully launched from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility site in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, in late August 2023, lasting approximately 6.5 hours in duration. ComPair is a prototype gamma-ray telescope for the development of key technologies for next-generation gamma-ray detectors consisting of four subsystems: a 10-layer double-sided silicon strip detector tracker, a cadmium zinc telluride calorimeter, a cesium iodide calorimeter, and a plastic anti-coincidence detector (ACD). The ACD acts as an active shield to veto charged particle events and consists of 5 plastic scintillating panels. ComPair was launched as a balloon payload from Ft. Sumner, New Mexico and completed a 6-hour flight on August 27, 2023. The ComPair gamma-ray telescope is a technology demonstrator for a future gamma-ray telescope called the All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory (AMEGO). The instrument is composed of four subsystems, a double-sided silicon strip detector, a virtual Frisch grid CdZnTe calorimeter, a CsI:Tl based calorimeter, and an anti-coincidence detector (ACD). The CsI calorimeter's goal is to measure the position and energy deposited from high-energy events. To demonstrate the technological readiness, the calorimeter has flown onboard a NASA scientific balloon as part of the GRAPE-ComPair mission and accumulated around 3 hours of float time at an altitude of 40 km. During the flight, the CsI calorimeter observed background radiation, Regener-Pfotzer Maximum, and several gamma-ray activation lines originating from aluminum.

Gamma-ray astrophysics in the MeV band is an exciting field in astronomy due to its potential for multi-messenger astrophysics. It has, however, remained under-explored when compared to other wavelengths. One reason for this observational gap is the difficulties with measuring these high-energy photons and the requirement of large amounts of detection material. In this work, we investigate the usage of large-volume GAGG scintillators for use as a calorimeter in future MeV telescopes. We developed a $5\times5$ array calorimeter utilizing $1\times1\times6 \ \mathrm{cm}^3$ GAGG crystals with onsemi C-series SiPM readout. We tested the calorimeter at the High Intensity Gamma-ray Facility (HIGS) with monoenergetic beams ranging from $2-25 \ \mathrm{MeV}$. Finally, we also investigate larger $1\times1\times8 \ \mathrm{cm}^3$ crystals and characterize their response across their depth when their surface treatment is either polished or frosted.

The Compton Pair (ComPair) telescope is a prototype that aims to develop the necessary technologies for future medium energy gamma-ray missions and to design, build, and test the prototype in a gamma-ray beam and balloon flight. The ComPair team has built an instrument that consists of 4 detector subsystems: a double-sided silicon strip detector Tracker, a novel high-resolution virtual Frisch-grid cadmium zinc telluride Calorimeter, and a high-energy hodoscopic cesium iodide Calorimeter, all of which are surrounded by a plastic scintillator anti-coincidence detector. These subsystems together detect and characterize photons via Compton scattering and pair production, enable a veto of cosmic rays, and are a proof-of-concept for a space telescope with the same architecture. A future medium-energy gamma-ray mission enabled through ComPair will address many questions posed in the Astro2020 Decadal survey in both the New Messengers and New Physics and the Cosmic Ecosystems themes. There is a growing interest in astrophysics to fill in the observational gamma-ray MeV gap. We, therefore, developed a CsI:Tl calorimeter prototype as a subsystem to a balloon-based Compton and Pair-production telescope known as ComPair. ComPair is a technology demonstrator for a gamma-ray telescope in the MeV range that is comprised of 4 subsystems: the double-sided silicon detector, virtual Frisch grid CdZnTe, CsI calorimeter, and a plastic-based anti-coincidence detector. The prototype CsI calorimeter is composed of thirty CsI logs, each with a geometry of $1.67 \times 1.67 \times 10 \ \mathrm{cm^3}$. The logs are arranged in a hodoscopic fashion with 6 in a row that alternate directions in each layer. Each log has a resolution of around $8 \%$ full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) at $662 \ \mathrm{keV}$ with a dynamic energy range of around $250\ \mathrm{keV}-30 \ \mathrm{MeV}$. A $2\times2$ array of SensL J-series SiPMs read out each end of the log to estimate the depth of interaction and energy deposition with signals read out with an IDEAS ROSSPAD. We also utilize an Arduino to synchronize with the other ComPair subsystems that comprise the full telescope. This work presents the development and performance of the calorimeter, its testing in thermal and vacuum conditions, and results from irradiation by $2-25 \ \mathrm{MeV}$ monoenergetic gamma-ray beams. The CsI calorimeter will fly onboard ComPair as a balloon experiment in the summer of 2023.

Astronomical observations with gamma rays in the range of several hundred keV to hundreds of MeV currently represent the least explored energy range. To address this so-called MeV gap, we designed and built a prototype CsI:Tl calorimeter instrument using a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) SiPMs and front-ends which may serve as a subsystem for a larger gamma-ray mission concept. During development, we observed significant non-linearity in the energy response. Additionally, using the COTS readout, the calorimeter could not cover the four orders of magnitude in energy range required for the telescope. We, therefore, developed dual-gain silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) boards that make use of two SiPM species that are read out separately to increase the dynamic energy range of the readout. In this work, we investigate the SiPM's response with regards to active area ($3\times3 \ \mathrm{mm}^2$ and $1 \times 1 \ \mathrm{mm}^2$) and various microcell sizes ($10$, $20$, and $35 \ \mu \mathrm{m}$). We read out $3\times3\times6 \ \mathrm{cm}^3$ CsI:Tl chunks using dual-gain SiPMs that utilize $35 \ \mu \mathrm{m}$ microcells for both SiPM species and demonstrate the concept when tested with high-energy gamma-ray and proton beams. We also studied the response of $17 \times 17 \times 100 \ \mathrm{mm}^3$ CsI bars to high-energy protons. With the COTS readout, we demonstrate a sensitivity to $60 \ \mathrm{MeV}$ protons with the two SiPM species overlapping at a range of around $2.5-30 \ \mathrm{MeV}$. This development aims to demonstrate the concept for future scintillator-based high-energy calorimeters with applications in gamma-ray astrophysics.

We present a maximum likelihood (ML) algorithm that is fast enough to detect gamma-ray transients in real time on low-performance processors often used for space applications. We validate the routine with simulations and find that, relative to algorithms based on excess counts, the ML method is nearly twice as sensitive, allowing detection of 240-280% more short gamma-ray bursts. We characterize a reference implementation of the code, estimating its computational complexity and benchmarking it on a range of processors. We exercise the reference implementation on archival data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM), verifying the sensitivity improvements. In particular, we show that the ML algorithm would have detected GRB 170817A even if it had been nearly four times fainter. We present an ad hoc but effective scheme for discriminating transients associated with background variations. We show that the on-board localizations generated by ML are accurate, but that refined off-line localizations require a detector response matrix with about ten times finer resolution than is current practice. Increasing the resolution of the GBM response matrix could substantially reduce the few-degree systematic uncertainty observed in the localizations of bright bursts., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

There is a growing interest in the science uniquely enabled by observations in the MeV range, particularly in light of multi-messenger astrophysics. The Compton Pair (ComPair) telescope, a prototype of the AMEGO Probe-class concept, consists of four subsystems that together detect and characterize gamma rays in the MeV regime. A double-sided strip silicon Tracker gives a precise measure of the first Compton scatter interaction and tracks pair-conversion products. A novel cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector with excellent position and energy resolution beneath the Tracker detects the Compton-scattered photons. A thick cesium iodide (CsI) calorimeter contains the high-energy Compton and pair events. The instrument is surrounded by a plastic anti-coincidence (ACD) detector to veto the cosmic-ray background. In this work, we will give an overview of the science motivation and a description of the prototype development and performance.

The All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory eXplorer (AMEGO-X) is designed to identify and characterize gamma rays from extreme explosions and accelerators. The main science themes include: supermassive black holes and their connections to neutrinos and cosmic rays; binary neutron star mergers and the relativistic jets they produce; cosmic ray particle acceleration sources including Galactic supernovae; and continuous monitoring of other astrophysical events and sources over the full sky in this important energy range. AMEGO-X will probe the medium energy gamma-ray band using a single instrument with sensitivity up to an order of magnitude greater than previous telescopes in the energy range 100 keV to 1 GeV that can be only realized in space. During its three-year baseline mission, AMEGO-X will observe nearly the entire sky every two orbits, building up a sensitive all-sky map of gamma-ray sources and emission. Gamma-rays, the most energetic photons, carry information from the far reaches of extragalactic space with minimal interaction or loss of information. They bring messages about particle acceleration in environments so extreme they cannot be reproduced on earth for a closer look. Gamma-ray astrophysics is so complementary with collider work that particle physicists and astroparticle physicists are often one in the same. Gamma-ray instruments, especially the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, have been pivotal in major multi-messenger discoveries over the past decade. There is presently a great deal of interest and scientific expertise available to push forward new technologies, to plan and build space- and ground-based gamma-ray facilities, and to build multi-messenger networks with gamma rays at their core. It is therefore concerning that before the community comes together for planning exercises again, much of that infrastructure could be lost to a lack of long-term planning for support of gamma-ray astrophysics. Gamma-rays with energies from the MeV to the EeV band are therefore central to multiwavelength and multi-messenger studies to everything from astroparticle physics with compact objects, to dark matter studies with diffuse large scale structure. These goals and new discoveries have generated a wave of new gamma-ray facility proposals and programs. This paper highlights new and proposed gamma-ray technologies and facilities that have each been designed to address specific needs in the measurement of extreme astrophysical sources that probe some of the most pressing questions in fundamental physics for the next decade. The proposed instrumentation would also address the priorities laid out in the recent Astro2020 Decadal Survey, a complementary study by the astrophysics community that provides opportunities also relevant to Snowmass., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

The sky at MeV energies is currently poorly explored. Here we present an innovative mission concept that builds on and improves past and currently proposed missions at such energies. We outline the motivations for combining a coded mask and a Compton telescope and we define the scientific goals of such a mission. The Galactic Explorer with a Coded Aperture Mask Compton Telescope (GECCO) is a novel concept for a next-generation telescope covering hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray energies. The potential and importance of this approach that bridges the observational gap in the MeV energy range are presented. With the unprecedented angular resolution of the coded mask telescope combined with the sensitive Compton telescope, a mission such as GECCO can disentangle the discrete sources from the truly diffuse emission. Individual Galactic and extragalactic sources are detected. This also allows to understand the gamma-ray Galactic center excess and the Fermi Bubbles, and to trace the low-energy cosmic rays, and their propagation in the Galaxy. Nuclear and annihilation lines are spatially and spectrally resolved from the continuum emission and from sources, addressing the role of low-energy cosmic rays in star formation and galaxy evolution, the origin of the 511 keV positron line, fundamental physics, and the chemical enrichment in the Galaxy. Such an instrument also detects explosive transient gamma-ray sources, which enable identifying and studying the astrophysical objects that produce gravitational waves and neutrinos in a multi-messenger context. We outline the science opportunities in the areas of searches for dark matter and new physics offered by a proposed future MeV gamma-ray telescope, the Galactic Explorer with a Coded Aperture Mask Compton Telescope (GECCO). We point out that such an instrument would play a critical role in opening up a discovery window for particle dark matter with mass in the MeV or sub-MeV range, in disentangling the origin of the mysterious 511 keV line emission in the Galactic Center region, and in potentially discovering Hawking evaporation from light primordial black holes., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, ~matches published version

We report on the results of the positional-dependent pulse shape discrimination (PSD) parameter observed within a monolithic CLLB scintillation crystal. CLLB, a relatively novel inorganic scintillation crystal, is capable of PSD between gamma rays, neutrons, and alpha particles. In this work, we observed distinguishable differences in the pulse shapes for gamma-ray-induced events. The CLLB crystals used for this experiment are 5 cm (diameter) by 10 cm (length). By using monoenergetic 2.614 MeV photons from a set of thoriated welding rods and performing collimated scans along the length of the crystal, we found that the centroid of the PSD distribution shifted as a function of position. With positional-dependent PSD, one can obtain more accurate knowledge of the interaction location within a monolithic scintillation crystal. These results could lead to improved angular resolution in imaging systems employing scintillation crystals that exhibit this behavior. Lastly, an understanding of the dependence of the PSD as a function of position could give manufacturers a better understanding of the crystal properties and provide insight to the distribution of internal contaminants and dopants within the crystal., Comment: 4 pages, 9 figures, presented at IEEE NSS-MIC 2020

The spectrum of cosmogenic neutrons at Earth's surface covers a wide energy range, from thermal to several GeV. The flux of secondary neutrons varies with latitude, elevation, solar activity, and nearby material, including ground moisture. We report the results from a campaign to measure count rates in neutron detectors responding to three different energy ranges conducted near the geomagnetic North Pole at CFS Alert, Nunavut, Canada (82.5 degrees , 62.5 degrees W; vertical geomagnetic cutoff rigidity, RC = 0 GV) in June of 2016. In November 2016, we performed a follow-on measurement campaign in southern Canada at similar RC (1.5 GV) and elevations. We conducted these measurements, at varying elevation and ground moisture content, with unmoderated and moderated 3He detectors for thermal and epithermal-to-MeV sensitivity, and with EJ-299-33 pulse shape discrimination plastic scintillator detectors for fast neutrons. Background gamma rays were monitored with NaI(Tl) detectors. Using these data sets, we compared the measured count rates to a predictive model. This is the first ever data set taken from this location on Earth. We find that for the thermal and epithermal-to-MeV neutron measurements the predictive model and data are in good agreement, except at one location on rock-covered ground near 1 km elevation. The discrepancy at that location may be attributable to ground moisture variability. Other measurements, during this campaign and prior, support the assertion that ground moisture plays a critical role in determining neutron flux., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures

Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are quickly replacing traditional photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) as the readout of choice for gamma-ray scintillation detectors in space. While they offer substantial size, weight and power saving, they have shown to be susceptible to radiation damage. SensL SiPMs with different cell sizes were irradiated with 64 MeV protons and 8 MeV electrons. In general, results show larger cell sizes are more susceptible to radiation damage with the largest 50 um SiPMs showing the greatest increase in current as a function of dose. Current increases were observed for doses as low at ~2 rad(Si) for protons and ~20 rad(Si) for electrons. The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory's (NRL) Strontium Iodide Radiation Instrument (SIRI-1) experienced a 528 uA increase in the bias current of the on-board 2x2 SensL J-series 60035 SiPM over its one-year mission in sun-synchronous orbit. The work here focuses on the increase in bulk current observed with increasing radiation damage and was performed to better quantify this effect as a function of dose for future mission. The All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory (AMEGO) is a probe class mission concept that will provide essential contributions to multimessenger astrophysics in the late 2020s and beyond. AMEGO combines high sensitivity in the 200 keV to 10 GeV energy range with a wide field of view, good spectral resolution, and polarization sensitivity. Therefore, AMEGO is key in the study of multimessenger astrophysical objects that have unique signatures in the gamma-ray regime, such as neutron star mergers, supernovae, and flaring active galactic nuclei. Gamma-ray astronomy explores the most energetic photons in nature to address some of the most pressing puzzles in contemporary astrophysics. It encompasses a wide range of objects and phenomena: stars, supernovae, novae, neutron stars, stellar-mass black holes, nucleosynthesis, the interstellar medium, cosmic rays and relativistic-particle acceleration, and the evolution of galaxies. MeV gamma-rays provide a unique probe of nuclear processes in astronomy, directly measuring radioactive decay, nuclear de-excitation, and positron annihilation. The substantial information carried by gamma-ray photons allows us to see deeper into these objects, the bulk of the power is often emitted at gamma-ray energies, and radioactivity provides a natural physical clock that adds unique information. New science will be driven by time-domain population studies at gamma-ray energies. This science is enabled by next-generation gamma-ray instruments with one to two orders of magnitude better sensitivity, larger sky coverage, and faster cadence than all previous gamma-ray instruments. This transformative capability permits: (a) the accurate identification of the gamma-ray emitting objects and correlations with observations taken at other wavelengths and with other messengers; (b) construction of new gamma-ray maps of the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies where extended regions are distinguished from point sources; and (c) considerable serendipitous science of scarce events -- nearby neutron star mergers, for example. We report on the development of the thallium-doped cesium iodide (CsI:Tl) calorimeter subsystem for the All-Sky Medium-Energy Gamma-ray Observatory (AMEGO) [1]. The CsI:Tl calorimeter is one of the three main subsystems that comprise the AMEGO instrument suite; the others include the double-sided silicon strip detector (DSSD) tracker/converter and a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) calorimeter. Similar to the LAT instrument on Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, the hodoscopic calorimeter consists of orthogonally layered CsI:Tl bars. Unlike the LAT, which uses PIN photodiodes, the scintillation light from each end of the CsI:Tl bar is read out with recently developed large-area silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays. Development of the calorimeter technology for a large space-based {\gamma}-ray observatory is being done via funding from the NASA APRA program. Under this program, we have designed, built and are currently testing a prototype consisting of 24 CsI:Tl bars (each with dimensions of 16.7 mm x 16.7 mm x 100 mm) hodoscopically arranged in four layers with six bars per layer. The ends of each bar are read out with SensL ArrayJ quad SiPMs. Signal readout and processing is done with the IDEAS SIPHRA (IDE3380) ASIC. Performance testing of this prototype was done with laboratory sources and at an initial beam test; future testing and characterization will be done during a second beam test (2019) and a balloon flight (2020) in conjunction with the other subsystems led by NASA-GSFC.
