Thus, PCOS transcends the reproductive years, yet there is sparse scientific literature on the peri-postmenopausal years of women with PCOS.Purpose: To explore how peri-postmenopausal women’s perceptions about PCOS have changed over the lifespan since their PCOS diagnosis.Methods: A cross-sectional survey with one qualitative question was conducted via Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) among women with PCOS aged ≥ 43 years, who were all recruited from PCOS-specific Facebook pages. Of the 107 women completing the survey, 72 substantively answered the qualitative question. The qualitative responses were analyzed using the steps of reflexive thematic analysis. Themes were interpreted and discussed through the lens of the bioecological conceptual model.Results: Respondents were 47.6 (± 4.1) years of age, primarily White (87.5%), employed full time (65.3%), and married (75%) with children (68%). Four overall themes were identified: 1) dismissal 2) information desert, 3) PCOS experience over the lifespan, and 4) mindset.Conclusion: The study findings illustrated the unique healthcare needs among peri-postmenopausal women with PCOS. Further research is needed to further explore their healthcare concerns and psychosocial needs followed by studies that develop and assess interventions that promote symptom and adaptive coping strategies across their lifespan.Keywords: polycystic ovary syndrome, systems theory, life course, women’s health

A major concern in potato and onion production worldwide is the sustainability of crop production systems using short-term rotations. Although rotation crops are known to influence soil microbial communities, few long-term field studies have investigated effects of potato and onion crop rotations on soil microflora and soilborne diseases. A long-term trial (10 years) was established in New Zealand in the 2004–05 season to determine changes in soil characteristics, soil biological communities, plant productivity and soilborne diseases resulting from different crop rotations. Six different crop rotation ‘treatments’ were used: three were onion-focused and three were potato-focused. For both the onion- and potato-focused rotations, one treatment was continual monoculture, one was biennial alternating onion and potato (‘conventional’ rotation, common local commercial practice) and one was a 4-year cycle where the onion or potato crops were grown every fourth season with different crops in the intervening seasons (‘sustainable’ rotation). The results of the rotations were evaluated at the end of 2012–13, nine growing seasons after the trial began. Soils from the three potato-focused rotations had similar microbial biomass carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), total C and N, and enzyme activity, but had different microbial activity parameters. Soils from the three onion rotations differed in organic matter content, total C and N, enzyme activity and carbohydrate utilization. The main factor correlated with potato diseases (stem canker, black scurf) and crop yields was the amount ofRhizoctoniainoculum in the soil. Onion yields in 2012–13 were correlated with the severity of pink root during the growing season. Total microbial activity in soil gave better relationships to soilborne disease incidence (Rhizoctonia stem canker of potato or pink root of onion) and to crop yields, than soil chemical parameters (pH, nutrient status, C:N ratio) or other microbiological parameters (microbial biomass, total culturable bacteria and fungi, and microbial diversity). This research has broadened understanding of effects of crop rotations on soil microbial community characteristics, soilborne diseases and crop productivity of potatoes and onions grown in a soil and an area where intensive vegetable production is common. This knowledge will assist growers to increase crop yields and reduce soilborne pathogens in a sustainable manner. Based on the results from this study, intensive potato and onion production should require these crops to be grown within 4-year crop rotations in order to foster sustainable yields and minimize soilborne diseases. A field trial was conducted in 2012–2013 at Pukekohe to determine the efficacy of wettable sulphur, applied as a foliar treatment within a reduced insecticide programme, to control tomato-potato psyllid (TPP). Three of the four treatments included wettable sulphur (Kumulus® DF; at 6 kg/ha), either alone or in combination with other insecticides. The remaining treatment was a standard 7 day insecticide spray programme. Spraying for all treatments began at 60% plant emergence on 29 November 2012, and continued until 14 March 2013. The study demonstrated that although sulphur applications may reduce TPP nymph numbers on potato foliage, especially when used in combination with insecticides, sulphur alone is not an adequate TPP management strategy. The field trial results for sulphur-only treatments support previous work suggesting that although sulphur may slow the build-up of TPP populations by deterring egg-laying, the lack of repellence or anti-feeding properties still results in the transmission ofCandidatusLiberibacter solanacearum by TPP. Given the ZC results, it is difficult to draw conclusions from this trial about the efficacy of sulphur/insecticide combinations for TPP management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Contents Pyometra, a prevalent infectious uterine disease that affects intact middle-aged bitches, is typically associated with Escherichia coli. Our hypotheses were (i) that bacterial adhesion to canine endometrium differs between different stages of the oestrous cycle and (ii) that the adhesin FimH facilitates this adhesion. Twelve post-pubertal, ovariectomized greyhound bitches were treated with exogenous hormones to simulate different stages of the oestrous cycle. Tissue samples from each uterus were incubated with a pathogenic E. coli strain carrying the fim H gene, but no other adhesin genes ( P4-wt)-or an E. coli strain in which fim H was insertionally inactivated ( P4- ∆fim H::kan)-or with phosphate-buffered saline as a negative control. After washing, tissue samples were homogenized for quantification of adherent bacteria. The differences in binding to canine endometrium at different stages of the oestrous cycle were not significant. However, the mean difference in binding of the P4-wt and the P4- ∆fim H::kan across all stages of the simulated oestrous cycle was significant (p < 0.001 by paired t-test on geometric means). Individual differences in numbers of P4-wt bacteria bound between dogs might suggest genetic variations or epigenetic differences in FimH receptor expression by the endometrium, unrelated to the stage of the oestrous cycle. Frequent deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan have placed a strain on military retention. There is a need to determine contributing factors predicting intent to leave the military. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent soldiers' mental health symptoms and perceptions of organizational climate are associated with intent to leave the military. Participants (n = 892) were soldiers of one infantry brigade combat team stationed in the United States, anonymously surveyed approximately 6 months after returning from a combat deployment to Iraq. The survey assessed overall deployment experiences, mental health symptoms, and perceptions of organizational climate. Results showed that soldiers reporting higher perceived organizational support were significantly less likely to report intent to leave and those screening positive for anxiety were significantly more likely to report intent to leave than those not screening positive. Intimate partner violence is an important public health problem. Cyber dating violence (CDV) is a form of intimate partner violence perpetrated within a dating relationship via new communication technologies. This study investigated the moderating roles of hostile and benevolent sexism in the relationship between problematic pornography use and CDV perpetration. The Cyber Pornography Use Inventory, the Cyber Dating Violence Inventory, and the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory were completed by 421 Italian adolescents ( M  = 16.53; females = 63.7%). Results indicated that problematic pornography use was positively related to CDV perpetration. In addition, the relationship between problematic pornography use and CDV perpetration was found to be moderated by hostile sexism. In participants with low levels of hostile sexism, the relationship between problematic pornography use and CDV perpetration was not significant. Conversely, in those with high levels of hostile sexism, this relationship was stronger and significant. Benevolent sexism was not found to be a moderator in the relationship between problematic pornography use and CDV perpetration. Thus, hostile sexism could be a risk factor for the relationship between adolescents' problematic pornography use and their engagement in CDV. Conversely, low levels of hostile sexism could be a protective factor.

Following the recent exhortations of health communication scholars to continue the study of pornography and its potential impact on health-related behaviors, the present study investigated associations between the frequency of pornography use and six indicators of impersonal sex among a national probability sample of US adults. Impersonal sex has been linked to a variety of important public health outcomes, including STD risk and sexual aggression perpetration. In this study, pornography use was positively correlated with the likelihood of engaging in group sex, having sex with a casual partner, having sex without emotional intimacy, experiencing heightened sexual pleasure during non-relational sex, relational infidelity, and perceiving the receipt of sexual pleasure from others as the best thing about sex. No evidence emerged that these associations were spuriously due to high sex drive individuals being both more likely to consume pornography and engage in impersonal sex. But several were conditional on age. Most importantly, countering the conventional wisdom that sexual media are most likely to affect the sexual behavior of young audiences, the strength of the positive association between pornography use and the likelihood of engaging in group sex and casual dyadic sex was larger among older adults and weaker among younger adults.

A growing body of research documents that the use of pornography is becoming more frequent among male sexual minorities. According to the sexual script acquisition, activation, application model of mediated sexual socialization ( 3 AM), pornography can be considered a potential factor influencing an individual's partner preference. In addition, perceived realism could moderate the link between pornography consumption and partner preferences. This study explored the relationship between pornographic video consumption and partner preference among male sexual minorities and the moderating role of perceived realism. A total of 595 male sexual minorities aged 18 to 47 years (M = 21.70, SD = 3.83), including 82.9% gay men and 17.1% bisexual men, were enrolled in the study. Our results revealed the following: (1) The frequency of pornographic video consumption and male sexual minorities' preferences for appearance and sexual ability in partner selection were positively correlated (r = .06/.07, ps < .05). (2) When perceived realism was low, pornographic video consumption was not significantly associated with appearance and sexual ability preference. (3) Conversely, when perceived realism was high, pornographic video consumption was positively associated with appearance and sexual ability preference (β = .17/.16, ps < .01).
